The Bemidji Senior Activity Center will host a bus trip to the north shore of Lake Superior on Oct. 22-24. Watermark to hold ceramics exhibit, competition

Watermark Art Center will hold their 15th annual “It’s Only Clay National Juried Ceramics Exhibit and Competition,” from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.

Open to the public, “It’s Only Clay” submissions are required to be functional clay vessels. Work is judged on function, form, aesthetics, craftsmanship and surface design. The award recipients will be announced at 6 p.m. along with a brief introduction by this year’s juror, ceramic artist Marion Angelica. The exhibit will be on display Oct. 4 through Dec. 21.

This year’s competition received many applications from the midwest and artists from as far away as New York, New Mexico and California.

In addition to the Watermark Art Center placement awards, work will be selected and purchased by Bemidji State University for the Margaret H. Harlow teaching collection. Steve Sundahl, associate professor with BSU’s Department of Technology, Art and Design and Harlow Collection representative, will also briefly discuss his selection process for the purchase awards.

The Harlow Collection includes more than 400 pieces from around the world spanning many eras.

In conjunction with the 2019 IOC Exhibit, select Japanese and Western ceramics and prints from the Margaret Harlow Vessel Collection and Lille M. Kleven Print Collection will be on display in Watermark’s Harlow | Kleven Gallery in the exhibit “Looking East,” from Oct. 4 through Jan. 24. Admission to Watermark Art Center is free and open to the public.

Overnight thunderstorms definitely impacted walleye activity, but didn’t stop

it altogether. We could locate fish, many of them holding along a shoreline break in 18 to 22 feet of water. There were enough marks on the screen of my Helix to suggest that we’d be in for a good bite, but the fish were not quite ready for feeding. For me, it was easier to get strikes than it was to get good hook sets, but that still proved to me that the fish were there, the problem of not hooking them was on me, not on the fish.

Luckily, Ken Seufert was able to score on a couple of nice walleyes and help prove to me that I had actually found “the right” fish.

There were pike on the breakline too and they were in one of their moods.

By the time we felt them hit our jig and

minnow; they had already sawed off the lure. I guess the storms did less to interrupt the pike action than it did the walleyes.

A few days of stable weather might help shift some more fish into high gear. I do think that will help and it looks like I’m going to get my wish.

The weather forecast for the next few days may not be what most folks would call nice; these next days are predicted to be similar to each other.

Cloudy, cool and relatively calm; if nothing else, it will make exploration a little bit easier.

I thought a word of caution about planning your bait supplies might be in order. On Sunday, I was counting on buying minnows at a bait shop near Remer,

when I arrived, they were closed. The next closest store was open, but all they had was crappie minnows and stupid looking little fatheads.

On Monday, one of the more reliable bait stores in the Grand Rapids area would be open, but not until after 8 a.m., a good hour after I drive by. The next alternative was open, they had bait, but still didn’t have everything on hand that I wanted.

For those of us who are still planning to fish for anything other than panfish and perch, planning ahead about where we will get our bait is going to be really important. If you’re familiar with a good, reliable bait shop that’s going to be open for a few more weeks, then let some of your friends in on the secret.

t’s hard to believe that we’ve already reached October, but here we are, only a couple of weeks away from the Hunter’s Moon. I still have a few weeks of fishing ahead of me and I know some of you do, too, so the reports will keep on coming.

By Monday morning, Sunday’s cold rain and blustery winds had worked surface temperatures down to 56 degrees at the outflow from Lake Winnie into the Mississippi River.

Water temperatures between 57 and 59 degrees were common on other lakes in the area as well.

Weed varieties like cabbage and coontail remain green, but many of the other weeds we encountered were black and soft, deteriorating fast.

Sanford Health announces changes in leadership west Technical College and Bemidji High School.

Titled the Collaborative Alliance for Regional Healthcare Educational Services, or CARES, the push was made to build the workforce and make an impact on the community’s education.

“What I’m most proud of is the balance of what we do,” Nermoe said of Sanford Bemidji. “Both on what we do on the campus and what we do in the community. It may not all be as visible to people coming to our campus, but there are a lot of things, whether it’s helping with creating the Bemidji Alliance, the CARES initiative or the Healthy Kids initiative with the United Way and Bemidji School District.”

“We as a board are proud of the accomplishments of Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota during Bryan’s Tenure,” said Kay Mack, Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota board chair, in a statement. “His dedication to health care in our community has resulted in tremendous growth and expansion of our facilities and services.

His leadership has also played a critical role in developing and fostering relationships within our community.”

While he’s moving to another community, Nermoe will be no stranger to the Fargo-Moorhead metro. Nermoe grew up in the area and attended Concordia College in

Moorhead. Nermoe said the proximity of the two markets should make for a smooth transition.

“The markets are very interactive with each other, especially in the relationship between Fargo and Bemidji,” Nermoe said. “We have a lot of patients starting out in Bemidji who find their way to Fargo to receive care we don’t offer here.

The transition, because of that, is a little easier.

Susan Jarvis, who’s going to be taking this role, we already work together quite a bit.”

Nermoe said he also doesn’t plan to be a stranger in Bemidji, either. He and his wife, Katie, plan to maintain a home on a Bemidji-area lake and visit as often as they can.

“The board wishes Bryan the best as he transitions to the Fargo market,” Mack said. “We are also grateful that Sanford has established strong leadership planning that will allow for a smooth transition between Bryan and our future president, Susan Jarvis. We look forward to working with Susan and are excited about the future of health care within our community.”

Jarvis has been with Sanford Health since 2010, beginning as executive director of emergency, trauma and critical services in Fargo, before moving to the vice president position in 2017.

According to a release,

under her work, Sanford opened a new medical center, several clinics and received certification as a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center.

Jarvis came to Sanford from Mission Hospitals and Health System in Asheville, N.C. She holds a degree in nursing from Clayton State University in Georgia, a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Francis and a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix.

Sanford Health is making changes to leadership in the First City on the Mississippi and in the Red River Valley.

The Sioux Falls, S.D./ Fargo, N.D.-based healthcare system announced last week that Bryan Nermoe, president of Sanford Bemidji, will be promoted to president of the Fargo market. Sanford also announced Nermoe’s successor in Bemidji will be Sanford Fargo Vice President of Operations Susan Jarvis.

The change will be effective Jan. 1, marking Nermoe’s tenure in Bemidji at about four years.

Nermoe succeeded Dan Olson. Sanford Bemidji has about 2,300 employees, while Sanford Fargo, about five times the market size of Bemidji, has about 12,000 employees, officials said.

Since being named president for the Bemidji and Bagley operations in 2016, Nermoe has seen several major projects come to fruition.

One was the $12 million, 20,500 square-foot Joe Lueken Cancer Center addition to Bemidji’s main clinic. Opened in August 2018, the facility includes 20 infusion rooms and 15 exam rooms, among other services, allowing more people to stay in Bemidji for treatment.

Know the common signs of giving scams Many people are excited by the prospects of supporting causes they care about. Charitable donations are how millions of people across the globe express such support, and many charities would not be able to function without donors.

Taking advantage of an opportunity to help others is fulfilling and exciting. It can be easy to get caught up in the emotion of giving let your guard down.

Doing so opens prospective donors up to charitable fraud, which makes victims of both donors and the people and organizations they want to help.

The Federal Trade Commission notes the following are some potential indicators of giving scams. ► Poor reports and ratings: Various organizations report on charities, sharing information about how they use donations and how successful their programs are.

Give.org, GuideStar.org, CharityWatch.org, and CharityNavigator.org are some examples of organizations that vet and/ or rate charities. Reports are accessible online, and donors should utilize these before giving. ► Unusual payment requests: It’s a big red flag if charities ask for donations via gift card or wire transfer, or if they insist donations be made over the phone. When making donations, the FTC strongly advises donors only submit payment via credit card or personal check. In addition, donors should simply hang up the phone if organizations insist on immediate payments.

► Look-alikes: Some perpetrators of charitable fraud are successful because they set up charities with names that are only slightly different from reputable, widely recognized charities. Before making any donations, donors should make sure the charity they’re giving to is the one they intend to help, and not a look-alike, fraudulent organization. ► Evasiveness about where donation dollars are going: Transparency is a good sign when it comes to gauging the reputation of charitable organizations.

Reputable organizations should be willing to indicate exactly where you’re donation dollars go. In fact, many take a proactive approach and include such information on their websites. Reconsider donating to any organization that appears hesitant to share how donation dollars are spent. ► Online donations: While most organizations allow donors to submit donations via their websites, before donating online, check the fine print to determine how much of your donation is going toward fees or other charges. Excessive fees is not necessarily indicative of fraud, but they can divert money from the cause you’re hoping to help. Donating via personal check or over the phone using a credit card may ensure more of your money goes to the cause and not the cost of maintaining a website and processing online donations.

BSU Talley Gallery to feature ‘linebyline’ art exhibit

BSU’s Talley Gallery will begin its 2019-20 exhibition calendar with the “linebyline” art exhibit featuring selected works from the Lillie M. Kleven collection.

Kleven’s collection has been an educational resource for BSU students since the 1970s and has grown to more than 500 works by an array of artists. The “linebyline” exhibition will shine a spotlight on intricate works accomplished using simple drawing tools and techniques. Showcased artists include Gendron Jensen, Maki Haku, Dale DeArmond and others renowned for their use of line variations to create a visual story.

Senior Community Clean Up Day set Oct. 26 Each year many senior citizens of Bemidji seek help with raking their yards in preparation for winter. In response to the need and spearheaded by Northwoods Caregivers along with Community Resource Connections, the Disability Linkage

Line, Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area, and United Way of Bemidji Area have come together to plan the 20th annual Senior Community Clean Up Day. The event is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct.

26 with volunteer registration and continental breakfast at the Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area, 1600 Minnesota Ave. NW. Senior Community Clean-Up Day is available for senior citizens 60 years of age and better or people living with a disability that reside within the city limits of Bemidji. Help is available free of cost with priority given to those who are homebound or are physically unable to perform the work themselves.

The deadline to request assistance is October 11.

In addition, the event would not be a success without the help of more than 400 caring volunteers helping rake and pick up leaf bags. Volunteers that sign up by

Bemidji city limits archery hunt is underway

Successful applicants are required to pass an archery hunt proficiency test before the hunt.

Each hunter is allowed to shoot five deer, only one of which can be an antlered deer.

For 13 years, the Bemidji City Deer Hunt has been a huge success, officials said, with more than 350 deer being removed from the city limits.

Dave Rave, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Bemidji area wildlife manager and member of the Bemidji City Deer Hunt Committee, believes that because hunters harvest mostly does and fawns (89 percent of deer taken have

The annual city of Bemidji Archery hunt began Saturday, Sept. 14 and runs through Dec. 31.

The city of Bemidji has great deer habitat and as such, a high deer population, according to the city’s Deer Management Committee. And high deer populations can lead to unwanted safety issues within the city limits. And while deer are beautiful and enjoyable to watch, they also can become a hazard to drivers and spread black-legged ticks (commonly known as deer ticks) that carry a variety of diseases, such as Lyme’s disease, the committee said in a release.

The Bemidji Airport property also has a large deer population. Deer fence surrounding the facility has been effective at keeping deer off the runways, but wind from thunderstorms can knock trees across the fence, allowing deer access. For the past several years, Brian Hiller, wildlife professor at BSU, has conducted a spotlight survey of the deer within the Bemidji city limits. His survey confirms that the deer population is very high.

To manage the city and airport deer populations at a lower level, Bemidji initiated two archery deer hunts in 2006 — one on the Bemidji Airport grounds and one in Ward 5 on the east side of Lake Bemidji. A third hunt in Ward 4 on the west side of Lake Bemidji was added in 2018.

The hunt is run by the city of Bemidji and the Bemidji Police Department.

Hunters were able to apply for the hunt before July 24. There was a $10 application fee and all applications were reviewed by the Police Department. A total of 62 public spots for the three hunt areas were filled by a lottery. Hunting is also

Prepare for the coming winter heating season Winter is just around the corner and the Department of Commerce is urging Minnesotans to prepare for the cold before it is here to stay.

Below are tips and resources to help ensure you are prepared for a cold Minnesota winter. ► Change your furnace filter regularly. At a minimum, filters should be changed every three months. That said, filters may need to be changed more often depending on usage. Check your filter monthly and if it looks dirty, change it. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder, wasting energy. ► Tune up your heating equipment yearly. Just as a tune-up for your car can improve gas mileage, an annual tune-up of your heating system can improve efficiency and ensure things run smoothly over the long run. Consider scheduling a tune-up before peak heating season arrives. Check

out ENERGY STAR’s Maintenance Checklist and Ten Tips for Hiring a Heating and Cooling Contractor. ► Install a programmable or smart thermostat.

Modern smart and programmable thermostats are helpful for people who are regularly away from home during the week or for long periods of time.

They help consumers save money and avoid wasting energy by allowing users to change the temperature of their home based on the time of day and whether they are at home or asleep. ► Seal your heating and cooling ducts. Ducts that move air to and from a forced air furnace, central air conditioner or heat pump are often big energy wasters. Ensuring they are sealed and insulated properly can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by 20 percent or more. ► Consider installing ENERGY STAR-qualified equipment. If your heating system is old or not performing efficiently,

consider having it evaluated by an HVAC contractor and consider replacing it with a unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR label. It’s better to plan ahead to replace an old furnace or boiler instead of waiting until late fall or mid-winter. ► If you use propane to heat your home: ► Buy early! Fill your tanks early to avoid paying higher prices when demand peaks. ► Consider a budget plan to spread out payments. A law signed by former Governor Mark Dayton after a shortage in 2014 requires most propane distributors to offer customers a budget payment plan.

MPR meteorologist to speak in Bemidji Minnesota Public Radio’s chief meteorologist will be the guest speaker when MPR Connects! comes to Bemidji for an event on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Hampton Inn & Suites.

Huttner was hired by MPR News in 2007 as its first chief meteorologist.

He launched daily weather chats on its 40-plus station network and also created the Updraft blog. In 2013, Huttner started MPR News’ award-winning weekly radio

show “Climate Cast,” which focuses on climate change news, science and solutions.

As a resident Minnesotan, Huttner has an understanding of Minnesota’s local weather and climate, a release said. His work focusing on climate vulnerability has provided insight into the greatest factors of climate change that Minnesotans face, as well as strategies to mitigate some of those risks.

The Bemidji stop is one of four free MPR Connects!

events this fall in Greater Minnesota.

The public is welcome to attend and learn more about the whys of weather and climate beyond the forecast. There is no charge for admission, but space is limited, so online preregistration is requested at mpr.org/ mprconnects.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The program will be from 6-7 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer period.
