The Bemidji Area Cross Country Ski Club will commence trail-clearing season at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Three Island Park, 7015 3 Island Rd. NE. Participants can meet in the old north parking lot and will be directed to trail sections by Mark Walters and Bruce Slinkman. Everyone is welcome. Additional trail clearing dates are set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Movil Maze, and at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Buena Vista Ski Area. It is recommended to wear quick-drying clothing that will allow you to easily maneuver wooded trails with enclosed footwear.

Anyone who has pruning shears or loppers, please bring them. Ending times will vary based on the number of participants.

Sanford to hold ‘Say Boo to the Flu’ event

Senior Center plans Grand Rapids trip

The Bemidji Senior Center is hosting a bus trip to the Reif Theater in Grand Rapids on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Sanford Children’s invites parents and their children for flu shots and Halloween fun at its Say Boo to the Flu event on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 3-6 p.m. at the Sanford Children’s Clinic, 1611 Anne St. NW, Bemidji.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to bring their kids and the whole family to get their seasonal flu vaccines all at once.

Children ages 6 months to 18 years old are invited to wear their costumes and trick or treat around the clinic. Adding to the fun, there will also be a mini pumpkin patch, a special Sanford Children’s treat bag to the first 300 kids, a coloring station and more!

Headwaters Music and Arts to host fiddle workshops

Headwaters Music and Arts will host Michigan fiddler and step dancer Carrie Dlutkowski for a series of workshops Oct. 25-27. She will provide an overview of the history, style and repertoire of one of three styles of fiddle music: Scottish, French-Canadian and Metis.

Beginner to advanced fiddle players ages 12 to adult may attend one workshop or all four sessions. Participants will gain an appreciation of the rich cultural histories behind these musical styles and begin building a repertoire of tunes while exploring the stylistic nuances that make different kinds of fiddle music unique. Sunday’s Step Dance workshop is open to all; it complements the fiddle workshops but does not require fiddle playing experience.

Scottish Fiddle Music: From 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, cost is $25.

French-Canadian Fiddle Music: From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 26, cost is $25.

Headwaters Music and Arts will hold a miniworkshop for string players from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW. Fiddlin’ Around is a free opportunity for students ages 5-11 with any level of playing experience to bring their violin or fiddle and join fiddler and step dancer Carrie Dlutkowski as the group explores tunes that are adaptable and creative. Students will be able to take the tunes with them as they can be played alone or in a group, by people of any level of experience, and are meant to be crafted by the musicians themselves.

Students should be accompanied by a guardian. Adults are encouraged to bring a device for recordings, which can be useful in future practice.

With almost two decades of experience, Dlutkowski is a talented classical and folk musician with a focus on the development of Scottish, French-Canadian and Métis (Native/ French/ Scottish) fiddle styles in the 18th century.

Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grant available

The Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grant is open to traditional and contemporary Native American artists in all arts disciplines residing in the following Minnesota counties: Becker, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Hubbard, Itasca, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, or Roseau.

This grant offers funding for costs associated with the exhibition, performance, or production of a creative work; purchase of materials or equipment necessary for a creative work; educational opportunities; mentorships; and proposals for career-enhancing projects or opportunities.

Applications are available online at www.r2arts. org, and paper applications are available upon request. Application deadline is Friday, Nov. 1. The maximum award amount is $1,000. Mini Musician preschool program at Headwaters

Headwaters Music and Arts will hold Mini Musicians, an eight-session preschool program led by music teacher Leisa Bragg, from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, Oct. 14 through Dec. 1, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW. The class is designed for children ages 3-5 and their guardians. It will be packed with singing, movement and dance, as children and adults explore the building blocks of music together through play and experimentation.

Bragg is an instructor of piano, voice and clarinet at Headwaters, with over 20 years of experience in Colorado as a public school band, choir and general music teacher, theater and church music director, and private lesson instructor.

Advance registration is required, there are limited number of spots available.

Headwaters Music & Arts will present Carrie Dlutkowski in concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. Shee will be joined

by Minnesota performers Brian Miller and Norah Rendell, musicians and singers with strong backgrounds in Canadian music. The concert is free and open to the public (donations welcome).

Dlutkowski’s enthusiasm for the fiddle music of Canada led her to explore its history, with a focus on the development of Scottish, FrenchCanadian and Métis (Native/French/Scottish) fiddle styles in the 18th century. Each of these cultural groups claims a strong musical tradition.

Carrie offers musical and historical presentations, workshops and performances that take listeners on an exploration of how these styles of music blended and developed through cross-cultural interaction. Dlutkowski is a step dancer in the Ottawa Valley style. As a classical musician, she has performed in various solo, symphony orchestra and opera orchestra, music theater, and chamber ensemble settings. As a folk musician, she has played in concerts, festivals, interpretive programs, for dances, and on the air.

Brian Miller fell in love with Irish traditional music 25 years ago in the crowd at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, moved from his hometown of Bemidji to St. Paul and has since become one of the most sought-after musicians in North America’s Irish music scene. Brian has toured widely throughout the US and Canada with bands including Bua and The Lost Forty.

Norah Rendell is a singer, flute player and whistle player that specializes in the traditional folk songs and dance music of Ireland and Canada. For the past 15 years, she has toured internationally with several ensembles

Beltrami County 4-H’ers participate in State 4-H Horse Show at fair A group of 16 Beltrami County 4-H’ers participated in the Minnesota 4-H State Horse show held Sept. 13-16. This year, 634 youth from across the state participated in the annual event at the Minnesota State Fair.

The 4-H’ers demonstrate their skills and knowledge in hippology (showing knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry), horse judging (study of an animal, measuring it against an accepted ideal), horse training and achievement, speech and demonstrations about interest in horses or the horse industry, showmanship and drill team skills, a release said.

The following youth were members of the Beltrami delegation: Drill Team-Freestyle, won third place in the state for 6-12 rider team: Isabella Anderson, Della Branham, Chloe Cook, Kenna Cook, Laura Davis, Riley Dreher, Meleah Grundmeier, Emma Mutnansky, Paige Wickum and Hallie Winters.

Kenna Cook, was the Grand Entry Rider, earning first place in poles, second place in jumping figure eight, fourth place in barrels and eight place in key race.

Alexa Eklund earned third place in barrels, fifth in western horsemanship and seventh in poles. She also competed in western showmanship, hunt seat equitation and pony hunt seat pleasure.
