Greetings everyone,
What an interesting time to be in business! The cattle industry as a whole is on the uphill and weather has been about as good as it could be this last year. We have been counting the blessings we have been given this year despite the different challenges we have faced personally. Anyone who raises animals knows it is 50% preparation and 50% luck most years and the preparation has paid off when we look out over the herd and (currently snow covered) pastures.
Tom is still searching for his perfect sire to use and work on every cow but has found some excellent genetics to be used and the cows have not disappointed to take those genetics and improve the next generation. Still continuing the shortened breeding season this year’s calf crop has kept a tight race on who is the best in the pen. Now having a decent corn and hay crop has definitely helped, but whenever we get to decrease feed because the bulls don’t clean up their daily feeding it is considered a good problem. The yearling bulls still gain about 3 pounds a day on corn silage, 12 pounds grain and free choice hay. The yearling heifers are only slightly lower at 2 pounds a day on corn silage, 6 pounds grain and hay. Older bulls are doing what they do best and are wintering in the woods eating corn silage, some grain and free choice hay. Although they have made a few unauthorized trips to the barn and other pastures. Fall calving had us spinninga few storie s and asa whole ver y successful . The fall herd is our leas t hands on animals but you can’t tell it by how well these calves have performed. With only trees as weather cover, creep feed, and sometimes too independent mothers, these calves have not slowed down throughout the weather shift from mud to snow.
Speaking of independent parents, Tom has found out this year that even when he doesn’t want the extra help, he is getting it anyway sometimes. Jo has been given the new privilege of co chore manager, navigator and schedule manager. The oldest grandsons have shown more interest in being involved in the farm and Victoria has been gladly taking the 4-hour drive one way to come and help whenever possible, even enlisting Hank more. James is honing his show skill and Kennith is super proud when he gets to walk the big animals around. Shane and his beautiful wife have added another “farm hand” with a fall born son. (sorry couldn’t help it if they made the class break exactly Aug 1). Jo has made sure to take him every chance she can, and it still is not enough for grandma. Shane has also become the crop planter, fabricator, and on call man despite his new family and crazy work schedule. Patti has gotten more experience with day-to-day things and taking lead on the back end of working cattle. Her siblings might say she is getting bossy but if it’s after 11am she is participating.
