from the Chamber Greetings! The Oxford Hills Chamber has long been

the voice of business for the Oxford Hills Region. In order for our organization to be an effective voice we must listen to you--our members, and in turn, speak out on your behalf to impact the future of this dynamic business community. As we look ahead, we will continue to focus on the issues you have said matter the most: jobs, business attraction and business retention. In addition, we must stay focused on the big picture priorities such as growth, mobility, education and workforce development. If there is a tough issue facing our region’s businesses, you can be sure the Chamber is involved--working toward a solution and looking out for your interests. I ask you to take the time to review our 2014 edition and reach out to the area businesses that are represented in this magazine. If we all take the time to understand each other’s needs, you will find that together we can impact our community and each other in a positive way.

The Towns of

Oxford Hills

10 Oxford Hills 2014 www.oxfordhillsmaine.com

The Oxford Hills is advantageously located with access to the Mountains and Lakes Regions of Maine, as well as being just a short 45 miles north of Portland, 35 miles east of New Hampshire and 20 miles west of Lewiston-Auburn. Some may call us a crossroads, but we see it as being located right in the middle of everywhere you want to be! Come find out why this is such a great place to visit, play and live. Buckfield • Colonized since

1776, Buckfield has retained its rural atmosphere. Residents and visitors enjoy canoeing on the Nezinscot River, hiking up Streaked Mountain and riding on the Railroad Bed Recreational Trail.

Harrison • Nestled between

Long Lake and Crystal Lake, small-town charm is found in the village of Harrison. Shops, restaurants, parks and the historic Scribner’s Mill and Deertrees Theatre welcome all to this friendly town.

Hartford • Set amid farms and forest, Hartford is a paradise of fresh air and incredible scenery, including Bear Pond and Bear Mountain. There’s plenty of fun to be had from hiking and quiet paddles to thrilling rides via snowmobile and ATVs.

Hebron • Home to one of the

nation’s oldest boarding schools, the town of Hebron centers around Hebron Academy. Rolling hills, farmland and forest accentuate the surrounding countryside.

Mechanic Falls • Mechanic

Falls had its economic beginnings in the manufacturing operations that relied upon the Little Androscoggin River for power. The town holds firm to its heritage as local businesses thrive.

Norway • The unique, historic

character of Norway is forever present on Main Street, where carefully preserved architecture enhances the shops, eateries, artistic outlets and other amenities. Year-round recreation can be found on Lake Pennesseewassee and at several conservation properties.

Otisfield • Lakes and ponds

including Thompson Lake, plus hills and valleys, enhance the rural nature of Otisfield. High atop Bell Hill, the Bell Hill Meetinghouse and one-room schoolhouse exemplify the community atmosphere of this small town.

Oxford • It’s the best of all

worlds in Oxford. Relax under the towering pines on Whitney and Hogan Ponds, or head to Route 26 for the shops, eateries, Oxford Plains Speedway and Oxford Casino. Don’t miss the Oxford County Fair, “A Good Old Country Fair.”

Paris • Historic Paris straddles the Little Androscoggin River. Enjoy a pause from the bustle of Main Street at McLaughlin Gardens or take in a show at Celebration Barn. Abraham Lincoln’s first vice-president, Hannibal Hamlin, was from Paris Hill.

Poland • From Tripp Lake

and Range Ponds State Park to the Poland Spring Inn and Resort, you can enjoy scenic vistas while listening to the loons in Poland. The Maine State Building, originally built for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, features a display of some of the books and original works of art from its heyday.

Sumner • Located in the

foothills, acres and acres of forest comprise Sumner. Route 219 affords beautiful views of Pleasant Pond. The west branch of TwentyFive Mile River runs through this quiet country village where a relaxed pace embraces all.

Waterford • Surrounded by hills

and lakes, Waterford consists of small villages, each with its own character. Waterford Flats, with its traditional 19th-century homes dressed in white, is classic New England. North Waterford is home to the Waterford World’s Fair.

West Paris • Scenic Snow

Falls on Little Androscoggin River, featuring a picnic area overlooking the gorge, marks the gateway to West Paris. Long known as the “Gem of Western Maine,” this is a popular location for mineral mining.

Creating Business Opportunities

in the Oxford Hills by Leigh Macmillen Hayes

John Williams, executive director of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce, has watched the area’s economy struggle for years. With the advent of the Oxford Casino, Applebee’s Restaurant and the soon-to-be Hampton Inn, he senses a positive vibe and an economic climate change for the region. “There has been interest on the part of other businesses coming here,” says Williams. “We’re beginning to see a resurgence on Main Street in Norway with new businesses that are locating there. I think part of the reason they’ve come and part of the reason they have an interest in this area is that they believe the growth of the Casino is bringing more people here and they’re going to be more successful.” Glen Holmes, the Economic Development Director for Community Concepts Finance Corporation (CCFC) agrees with Williams wholeheartedly. “The Casino has created a lot of buzz and a lot of interest,” says Holmes. He sees the Casino as a catalyst offering spin-off opportunities for other businesses. Probably the real catalyst though, is the Hall family that owns Crestholm Farm and much of the property surrounding the Casino on Route 26. Holmes explains that the family is concerned that businesses they bring to the site are the right partners. “They are looking at success,” explains Holmes. “They have a process they’re putting everybody through to make sure they have the

financial capacity to be there and to make sure they have the management strength to be there. John Williams explained early in the process that we don’t want to have people get there and then fail.” A consolidated way of developing the area will benefit everyone in the end. For that reason, the Halls are not in a hurry to sell their property to just anyone. “They want to make sure this development will be something they can be proud of like they’ve been proud of their farm for generations,” says Holmes. “They’re looking at recreation, retail, hospitality, campgrounds, indoor-outdoor water pools and housing” as options for the remainder of the land they own.

create numerous opportunities to strengthen the local economy, provide a better quality of life and build on local assets. Due to the Oxford Casino, there is potential for the Oxford Hills to blossom, much as Sunday River has helped Bethel bloom.

“There’s a lot of interest,” says Holmes, “but it’s still in the works.” Rather than take a piecemeal approach, Williams states that there is a need to proceed with caution and do any development right the first time so they don’t have to do it over again. “What’s going to be successful?” he asks. “What will drive business?”

Providing guidance along the way is key. Cooperative efforts exist among several groups that offer assistance and want to help create an environment conducive to the formation and attraction of new businesses as well as promote the retention and expansion of existing ones.

The right projects could initiate the type of growth that will

The goal of SBDC is similar to WMEDC in that it also provides resources for anyone who wants to expand or start a business. Business

management, marketing and operations assistance and one-to-one business counseling are available at no cost. “We show them how to write a business plan, cash flow analysis, financial documents, etc.,” says Giroux. “We help them prepare to apply for a loan and then run their own business.” All three of these groups, along with the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce and others coordinate to provide workshops and seminars for businesses. Their ultimate goal is to help harvest opportunities in the Oxford Hills-- new or expanded businesses featuring local ownership and local roots.

John and Angela Harvey, founders and owners of Green Machine Bike Shop at 329 Main Street, Norway, opened the doors in April of 2012. Since then, the bike sales and repair shop has taken off--making them realize that dreams are attainable. Their cycling knowledge stems from many years of experience in different aspects of the industry, including as a mechanic and retail sales clerk at LL Bean. Days off found them heading west to ski so eventually they decided to put down roots in Bethel and pursue their favorite pastimes--telemark skiing and mountain biking. With the move came a job change and John started a construction company. During this time, he and Angela built an off-the-grid timber-frame cabin nestled in the woods. As the construction boom slowed and a family loomed on the horizon, John began to wonder about the next path to follow. In the back of his mind, he’d always wanted to own a bike shop.

The couple envisioned opening a repair shop until a good friend asked if they wanted to sell FELT® bikes. As soon as other friends in the industry heard of their plans, they discovered a network of support. The Harveys chose Main Street in Norway because it is an easy commute from their home and the area has the population to support their endeavor. Within months, the romantic notion to open a bicycle shop of their own became a reality. As did baby Anna. During the spring, summer and fall, the Harveys focus on all things bicycle. “We’re working on being the best bike shop that we can be,” says John. Their extensive knowledge and deep passion for bicycles permeates the shop’s atmosphere and translates to every aspect of their work, whether it’s explaining the details of bike care to a customer or repairing a ten-speed that’s been sitting in a barn for thirty years. Along with FELT®, they sell KHS® and Santa Cruz® bicycles because it’s important to them to pro-

vide the best quality products. “It’s worth spending the extra money to get the real thing,” says John, “and enjoy it longer.” Parts and accessories complete the inventory. In two workshop spaces, he and an employee fix bicycles of all types. They strive to make your ride down the street or over a trail comfortable. If they don’t have a replacement item in stock, they’ll order it. John and Angela are detail oriented and they like people--this is obviously a labor of love. But it’s more than a small showroom with two service areas. As passionate riders, they want to grow the sport. During the extended season they host group rides on Wednesday nights after the store closes. Routes allow riders to enjoy the beautiful scenery and peaceful, rural roads of the Oxford Hills. At least two groups of differing abilities head off each week--all end up back at the shop almost simultaneously to hang out and chat. There is no cost to participate. John finds it a great

opportunity to be surrounded by people who love to ride.

In the shop, they perform ski tuneups and make repairs. With a stateof-the-art stone grinder they can remove fine scratches that may inhibit your performance, sharpen edges and create the right bevel for your needs and ability.

To further foster the bicycle atmosphere of the community, they’re developing mountain bike trails at Shepard’s Farm Family Preserve, a Western Foothills Land Trust property that is located within easy riding distance from Main Street. Because the long-term goal is to make Norway a mountain bike destination, they also offer mountain bike group rides. “We’re focusing most of our energy to create mountain biking trails designed for beginners and kids, but still challenging,” says John. “We want to get kids and families involved. Eventually we’ll have more challenging trails.” During the off season, bicycle enthusiasts are invited to attend workshops, slide show presentations and participate in spinning classes. For a nominal fee, spinning classes are indoor workouts intended to keep muscles in shape. While sitting atop your bike clamped into a trainer, you’ll experience a simulation of riding on the road. “When the weather is right,” says John, “you’ll already have had a few

They also offer telemark ski demonstrations to promote the sport. And each February they participate in the Tele Fest at Mt. Abram in nearby Greenwood.

“...the long-term goal is to make Norway a mountain bike destination... ” workouts, making the first few rides more fun.” And since John and Angela are also avid telemark skiers, they sell complete telemark packages, plus alpine bindings and ski accessories, including poles.

BikeMaine 2014: Pedaling the Waterways September 6-13, 2014 On Sunday, September 7, 2014, approximately 350 bicyclists will roll into Norway as part of the BikeMaine 2014 seven day tour, a project of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. The entire route encompasses 348 miles. Norway was chosen as a host town in recognition of the Norway Downtown community, part of the Maine Downtown Center Program and its active bicycle/ pedestrian initiative.

When the Harveys aren’t in the shop, working on trails, riding, skiing, or enjoying family time, they’re involved in promoting community events, attending Healthy Oxford Hills meetings and planning bike routes, including Bike Maine’s 2014 route, which Norway is proud to host on September 7th. (see sidebar for details) John says they are encouraged by current business and excited to be meeting so many new people. One of the things they appreciate about being in Norway is their central location to a good cup of coffee, a slice of pizza and a beer. “All of the ingredients are here,” says John. “It’s great for the local economy to bring people in--let them try out the trails, visit the shops, swim in the lake. Norway is becoming hip.”

Cyclists will depart from Westbrook and ride 55 miles before arriving in Norway during the afternoon. Norway’s businesses and organizations will greet riders, provide free entertainment along Main Street and showcase the area. Residents are invited to join in the festivities. Health and Wellness

in the Oxford Hills by Laurie LaMountain

A lot of things thrive in a rural environment and chief among them is the Oxford Hills health care community. Maybe it’s due to the strong work ethic that exists in the region or maybe it’s due to the strength of the community itself, but there is a concerted commitment to supporting and improving wellness in the Oxford Hills. At center stage is Western Maine Health, a family of health care providers that is led by Stephens Memorial Hospital. One of nine hospitals in Maine to make the elite list of Leapfrog Group’s 2013 Top Rural Hospitals, Stephens Memorial is a 25-bed critical care access hospital with 42 active physicians on staff. The Leapfrog Group’s 21 Oxford Hills 2014 www.oxfordhillsmaine.com

from 16th place to 12th in 2013 County Health Rankings©.

Top Hospitals designation is widely considered the nation’s most competitive hospital quality award and recognizes hospitals that deliver the highest quality care by preventing medical errors, reducing mortality for highrisk procedures, and reducing readmissions for patients being treated for chronic conditions. There are only 22 rural hospitals in the country to receive the Top Rural Hospital award, and as is stated on the Western Maine Health Web site, “You don’t win the Leapfrog award for quality and care without teamwork.” As part of their on-going effort to assure quality health care in the Oxford Hills, Stephens Memorial Hospital is part of Maine Track, a unique medical education partnership between Tufts University Medical School (TUSM) and Maine Medical Center (MMC) designed to encourage medical practice in Maine by increasing the number of students who participate in clinical clerkships in rural areas. It’s an established fact that

medical students tend to practice where they train and, with that goal in mind, Stephens Memorial Hospital was selected as the first site for the MMC/TUSM program in which three students recently completed a nine-month rural medicine clerkship. While Stephens Memorial Hospital performs a leading role at Western Maine Health, its affiliates provide a solid supporting cast who are equally committed to improving health status in the Oxford Hills. In its partnership with MaineHealth, Western Maine Health is part of a Health Index Initiative launched by MaineHealth in 2009 to address key indicators known to influence health status, including childhood immunizations, tobacco and drug use, obesity, preventable hospitalizations, and cardiovascular and cancer mortality. By focusing on these priorities through programs such as Healthy Oxford Hills and 5210 Let’s Go! Oxford County, an obesity prevention campaign aimed at local school districts and child care centers, Oxford County rose

A Place for All Ages Dr. Jill Gabrielsen prides herself on the fact that every one of her patients has both her cell phone and home phone number and can call her at any time. “People appreciate being able to talk with their pediatrician on the weekend,” she says and then adds that most are considerate and respectful of her time and will only call if they have immediate concerns that won’t wait for a weekday. Dr. Gabrielsen is one of a dwindling number of doctors in private practice and the only private practice pediatrician in Norway. Her patients range in age from birth to young adult, and even include a few college students she has treated over the past twelve years. Prior to establishing Healthy for Life Wellness Center on Marston Street in Norway four years ago, she was an on-staff pediatrician for eight years with Western Maine Health. One of the things that prompted her to establish a private practice was that she wanted to be able to spend time with her patients that would allow for lifestyle education. “In pediatrics, it’s all involved— parenting, family life, etc., which is why community involvement is so important,” says Gabrielsen, who has made it a point to be involved in numerous community programs, including the Alan Day Community Garden in Norway, teaching Spanish in the elementary school and taking part in the after school cross-country ski program. She also organized a walking group that provides social engagement within the context of regular physical activity. With childhood obesity and

type 2 diabetes on the the rise, it’s never too early to instill healthy habits that are more likely to last a lifetime. Coughs-N-Sniffles is the first nurse practitioner-owned and operated quick access clinic in the Oxford Hills. Kristie Knapp, CNP, has made it her mission to make quality health care accessible, convenient and, above all, affordable. With seventeen years of nursing experience behind her, Knapp offers speedy treatment for bumps and bruises, sprains and splinters and, of course, coughs and sniffles. She also provides camp, school, athletic and DOT physicals, as well as limited diagnostic testing. For minor medical problems that require immediate care, Coughs-N-Sniffles is a reliable treatment alternative that is open Tuesday through Saturday and conveniently located at Market Square in South Paris. Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice (AHCH) is a non-profit Medicare-certified agency founded in 1966. It was formed in response to a growing demand among rural Maine’s aging population for a health care provider dedicated to maintaining independence and quality of life by caring for patients within the comfort of their home and community. The agency initially consisted of a small staff of three providing home care services to patients in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. By the 1970s, AHCH and the home care industry itself had grown significantly and a second office was opened in Norway to meet the expanding need for services within Oxford County. Today, AHCH has offices in Lewiston, Bridgton, Norway, Wilton and its Hospice House in Auburn. They employee 380+ nurses, therapists, social workers, home health aides

and support staff and more than 230 volunteers who support patients daily. The Norway office employs 40+ nurses, therapists, social workers and home health aides who work, and often live, within the Oxford Hills community, resulting in community-based care that benefits both clients and employees by being “close to home.” In 2011, the Norway office was selected as a pilot facility for developing AHCH’s chronic care disease management program for addressing congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and depression— four chronic conditions prevalent in the elderly. The success of the program in Norway has led to expansions in the Bridgton, Wilton and Lewiston offices. Through the use of Telehealth Monitoring Services as part of their “best practice care,” AHCH staff are able to give patients an active role in managing these conditions by monitoring their own blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels and weight on a regular basis, thereby improving patient outcomes and significantly reducing the incidence of hospital readmissions and unnecessary trips to

the ER. It is, in President/CEO Julie Shackley’s words, a phenomenal tool for managing chronic disease. AHCH also provides an invaluable link between physicians and patients by coordinating with patients on social services and prescription management issues that are unlikely to come up in a routine office visit. Hospice care is AHCH’s second largest service, providing end-oflife care to patients within their homes, in hospitals, in long-term care facilities and at the Hospice House, their 14-bed acute care facility in Auburn. Comfort and quality care are key and the Hospice House offers a warm and inviting atmosphere where the sound of music and laughter are present and dogs make regular rounds to provide pet therapy to patients. Reiki and comfort massages also are available. “Our goal is to have the highest quality care to the very end of life, surrounded by loved ones and family, both at [the Hospice] House and in their own home. It’s not giving up. It’s an acknowledgement of the disease process, but, really, taking hold of living each day to its absolute fullest. It’s a pretty

spectacular program,” says Shackley. She points out that the skill set of hospice nursing is to provide everyone involved the tools to understand and acknowledge what is happening within a supportive and loving context. Hospice staff have expressed that it’s an honor to provide comfort and support to patients and their families with that transition. AHCH also provides bereavement and volunteer services to family members who have experienced a loss. These services are not covered by Medicare or Medicaid, so AHCH raises funds to offset the costs of providing these services for up to one year. Shackley also points out that a greater emphasis on community-based home care is the direction health care is moving, so agencies

such as AHCH have become much more pro-active about managing their resources wisely and operating efficiently. AHCH currently services over 8,000 patients on an annual basis, with just over 1,000 of them located in the Oxford Hills/Oxford County area. In fact, there are only two home care and hospice organizations that remain independent in the state, and AHCH is one of them. Most are affiliated or owned by hospital systems, but because of where they are positioned, AHCH works with St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston and Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, Central Maine Medical based in Lewiston, and Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. “We’ve been financially successful and our clinical outcomes are great,

so that we’re able to continue that. Now, will we always? That’s the million dollar question. With the health care delivery system changing and evolving, I don’t know, but as long as we are meeting the needs of our partners, we’ll continue to be independent,” says Shackley. “That also allows us to hire folks in the Oxford Hills community who are local and often know the people they’re caring for. No one person can do it alone and it has to be a community to solve whatever issue is going on, because it’s going to take all of us.” A complete list of health, fitness and wellness members is provided in the membership directory on pages 70-82.

An Architectural Monument

“To the building Committee and those liberal individuals who have voluntarily stepped forth and borne a pecuniary burden in erecting this house,  I would say, I trust you will receive a blessing-and when this earthly temple shall have mouldered and decayed, that you will worship God in a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens.”

For the past 175 years, the tower and red dome of the Bell Hill Meetinghouse in Otisfield has stood out as an architectural monument. Positioned atop a flat hilltop with breathtaking views, this handsome 19th century building creates a striking focal point. Bell Hill is situated a mile off Route 121 and originally served as the town center. In fact, it was first called Otisfield Hill. The early settlers found this spot appealing because the higher ground meant frost arrived later in the fall and the ground thawed earlier in the spring, thus extending the growing season. It was here that the first farms and homes were built, along with the first store, school, cemetery and the original meetinghouse. When the 1797 meetinghouse, built by George Pierce, began to show signs of wear, it was decided that a more modern structure was necessary. Native son and local architect, Nathan Nutting, Jr., was hired to design and build the new meetinghouse. Nutting came from a prominent Otisfield family and had the unique opportunity to study architecture and the building trade in Boston under the auspices of Asher Benjamin. As a master builder, Nutting was responsible for many fine structures erected in Otisfield and the surrounding towns, but the Bell Hill Meetinghouse, which he was commissioned to build in 1837, with its high steeple, open belfry and large red dome, is the most grandiose. “The new meetinghouse was dedicated October 2, 1839, according to Dr. [Horace] Barrows diary. Mr. Richardson preached the dedicatory sermon. The house and

aisles were full and the collection was very large. The Reverend Cyril Pearl preached in the afternoon.” (William Spurr, History of Otisfield, p.105) Like many clapboarded, Federal-style New England meeting houses, the two-story Bell Hill Meetinghouse is rectangular in plan. The symmetrical facade features two six-panel entry doors topped with louvered wooden fans. Windows and fans are situated

with a copper weathervane, visible for miles around. The modest interior has been little altered through its 175 year history. To either side of the foyer, stairs lead to the gracefully curved balcony, providing a contrast to the straight lines reflected in the rest of the sanctuary. Within the sanctuary, boxed pews with hinged doors face the pulpit. Wainscoting composed of beaded vertical boards decorates the walls. The painted pine floor is covered with hand-dyed carpet runners. Six hanging lanterns illuminate the room. The raised platform holds the altar. Attached to the wall behind the altar, molding frames the space and further reflects the sparseness of the Greek Revival style.

“...three-tiered structure features an open balcony housing the bell... ” above the doorways. On the sides of the building, wooden shutters also flank the windows. The Greek-Revival influence of the second quarter of the 19th century is evidenced in the symmetry, projecting pavilion and the location of the bell tower over the gable. It is the multi-stage bell tower, or belfry, that is most notable. This threetiered structure features an open balcony housing the bell and the bright red octagonal dome topped

The Meetinghouse was built at the time when the town’s population had peaked at 1,300. In the following years, however, Otisfield was bypassed by the effects of the Industrial Revolution, which favored larger towns astride rivers to provide power for huge mills. The population plummeted as people left to work in the mill towns and furthered declined when an increasing number of people headed west to gain their fortunes on the frontier. The Meetinghouse was built as a Congregational parish, which for a time experienced a revival of religious fervor. Within ten years, however, the pastor noted, “Dec 31, 1848: The past year has been one of peculiar apathy on the subject of religion.” (Spurr, History of Otisfield, p. 101) As the town’s

The last regular church meeting at the Bell Hill Meetinghouse was in 1887. Fortunately, that was not the end of the building. Through bake sales and community suppers, residents led by George Turner, raised money to support some repairs. In 1913, a new tradition began when the neighbors started sponsoring one annual religious service at the Meetinghouse. The tradition of a Bell Hill Day service on the last Sunday of July continues to this day. Turner, a lifelong member of the Congregational Church, lived across the street from the Meeting-

In an effort to encourage wider participation, the association moved away from featuring strictly religious services on Bell Hill Day. Over the years, they’ve offered a variety of speakers and even hosted a reenactment of a Civil War encampment. In 2013, the group celebrated the 100th consecutive annual service in the Meetinghouse with 108 people in attendance.

house and organized an association to care for the building. In 1927, the Bell Hill Meetinghouse Association was formed and incorporated, with Turner as its first president. The association’s mission was to preserve the building and continue the annual services. In the early 1950s, the group was able to acquire the adjacent 1839 brick schoolhouse. More recently, an additional lot on the opposite side of the Meetinghouse was purchased. Entering the 21st century, people with a continued passion for the property realized the need for historic preservation. The belfry and dome needed to be taken down, rebuilt and set back in place. The granite foundation needed exten-

The board of directors and concerned members continue to seek ways to increase the use of the buildings and their financial support. During the summer months, they host concerts, art shows and exhibits. The Meetinghouse is also available for wedding rentals. To commemorate the Meetinghouse’s 175 anniversary, all are invited to a special program at 2:30pm on Sunday, July 27, 2014, in honor of Nathan Nutting, Jr. Situated off the beaten path, the Bell Hill Meetinghouse is an architectural gem that relies on community support. It has endured because of the people who have gathered and continue to gather inside to carry on some of the town’s oldest traditions. Special thanks to Callie Zilinsky, president of Bell Hill Meetinghouse Association and Jean Hankins, town historian.

Art Moves

the Oxford Hills by Laurie LaMountain Debi Irons founded Art Moves Dance Studio in Norway in 1988. A quarter of a century later she is still going strong. Born and raised in Norway, Maine, Irons finds both inspiration and regeneration in the landscape of the Oxford Hills. She points out that it’s not uncommon for her to work with over 400 students in one week, so when she manages to find time for herself, she prefers to spend it in nature. The Oxford Hills is not the only landscape she has come to know and love, however. When she was a junior in high school, she was awarded an American Field Service (AFS) scholarship to spend a year in Brazil with a host family. It was “a true cultural exchange experience” and she came away from it with a deep love for Brazilian culture. “There is so much joy and music in the culture. There’s a real openness to music and collaboration in Brazil,” says Irons. It wasn’t immediately after that experience that she developed the concept for variant dance that she uses today, but the seeds were planted. For the next ten years Irons danced in California, Boston and Japan, focusing mostly on classical dance forms. From her experience of teaching

The Cottage Street Creative Exchange is the non-profit arm of Art Moves that has allowed it to come full circle through its GLOBALOCAL focus. It reflects a deepening commitment to local community, along with a passion for a broader exchange between cultures. Thanks to the Exchange, an Art Moves dance student is accompanying Irons on a trip to Brazil this year. What AFS was able to do for Debi Irons in 1978, the Cottage Street Creative Exchange is doing for another young woman in 2014. www.artmovesdance.com 207-743-5569 Nan Brett is yet another woman committed to the health enhancing qualities of dance and movement. In 1994, she became owner of The Ballroom in Harrison. The main room for which the dance school and studio is named is a 2,000-square-foot ballroom with mirrored walls, great acoustics and 16-foot-high ceilings. dance in schools and observing her students, the variant dance concept fully emerged. She refers to it as “a hybrid of musically derived dance forms” and admits to it being hard to define. The most common term would probably be contemporary, but she finds the distinguishing feature of variant dance to be in its source. “The music tells me what to do,” she points out. It’s a little like the brush determining how the hand moves over a blank canvas.

Meet The Team by Leigh Macmillen Hayes

In the fall of 2009, Norway Savings Bank Senior Vice President of Marketing, Karen Hakala, was thrilled with the idea of partnering with World Champion snowboarder Seth Wescott.

38 Oxford Hills 2014 www.oxfordhillsmaine.com

Hakala immediately saw the opportunity to integrate Wescott into marketing the bank--after all, he’s a bank customer and world traveler. “It was ideal to feature Seth,” says Hakala. “He relies on a mobile phone to do his banking. Wherever he goes in the world he’s connected to Norway Savings Bank.” Working with this celebrity sportsman opened up the opportunity for the bank to reach a different demographic and they soon discovered that Seth was not only an all-around nice guy, but also an outstanding ambassador for the bank. “He really cares about his relationship with us,” says Hakala. “He’s been to many of our events and speaks really well for us.” Several years later, Boston Celtics legend and two-time NBA champion Dave Cowens inquired about becoming part of the NSB team. With NSB’s ad agency, Hakala brainstormed “what it’s like to bring Seth Wescott and Dave Cowens to the table.” In the process, they realized they could include two other world class athletes they already sponsored: Triathlete Angela Bancroft and Para-athlete Josh Kennison.

and hard work that the bank provides its customers. NSB has even implemented an employee wellness program and earned their own Gold-Level Well Workplace Award by the Wellness Council of America, thus distinguishing the bank as one of the healthiest companies in America.

“Since joining the NSB team, I have always felt that I had people in my corner.” All four members of The Team live locally. “I feel proud that they work with us,” says Hakala. “They’re customers and they are so appreciative of working with us. They tell our story and represent the bank in a powerful way.”

As a world champion snowboarder, Seth Wescott of Carrabassett Valley started on a skateboard at age six. On skis by eight, he switched to a snowboard by the time he was ten and never looked back. He earned his two gold medals in the 2006 and 2010 Snowboardcross races. Wescott is also a World Cup champion several times over. When he’s not practicing, traveling or working at his brew pub, The Rack, he helps with charitable organizations such as his own foundation called the Level Field Fund, Maine Special Olympics and Winterkids. Wescott says, “For me it’s an honor to be a part of the NSB team. The four of us as athletes span multiple generations and a broad spectrum of athletics but what we all share is a passion for our given sports and the way they have impacted our lives. Being able to share the joy of athletics with others has been a central part of my childhood as well as my adult life. Sports are a transcendent part of the human experience.

Seth Wescott: “Being able to share the joy of athletics with others has been a central part of my childhood as well as my adult life.”

“What a team,” says Hakala. “What an opportunity for us to showcase those who we’ve already been sponsoring. They all speak to different audiences.” You may have seen these four amazing athletes featured in NSB’s television campaign--they serve as a springboard for the NSB brand. The Team, as the group is fondly called, creates a metaphor for the teamwork, perseverance 39 Oxford Hills 2014 www.oxfordhillsmaine.com

I have seen how my personal journey to the Olympics has impacted lives here at home as well as around the world. It has been very impactful to see how a passion that I developed as a child has lead me to follow a dream around the world and the support I get from people at home encourages me to keep reaching for future goals.” He adds, “I’m so thankful for the relationship I have with NSB. The feeling of being a part of their family is just that. The feelings of support I have received over the years through meeting employees at events has been wonderful. I truly feel as though I’m a part of the company and it’s an honor to represent them in the state of Maine.” Dave Cowens of Raymond played center/forward for the Boston Celtics for ten years, and then one season for the Milwaukee Bucks before he became an NBA coach. His career got a jump start in elementary school and in 1970 he was picked up by the Celtics in the first round. Cowens was chosen MVP of the All-Star game in ’73, led his team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals during the ’77-’78 season, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991. Over the years he has coached more than 40,000 kids at basketball camps and for ten years he served as the Executive Director of the Sports Museum of New England. Of being associated with NSB, Cowens says, “It is gratifying after all these years removed from my playing days that Norway Savings Bank would see value in having me be part of their marketing cam-

paign. Also, getting to meet the other athletes on the team and to work with the good people at the bank has been a rewarding experience. I feel fortunate to be part of a TEAM again to help wherever and whenever I’m needed.” Ironman Triathlete Angela Bancroft of South Paris has been competing since she was eight years old. She entered her first full Ironman Triathlon, where she swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles and ran 26.2 miles, in 2009, and placed second in her age group. Since then, this elite athlete has continued to train and compete, while raising three sons. This past year she placed in the Top 10 Overall in her age group and became a Silver AllWorld Athlete--an award given to triathletes who rank in the top 5% of their age group in international standings. Bancroft is also a USAT Level 1 Certified Triathlon Coach and co-founder of TriMoxie Multisport Coaching. “I approached Norway Savings Bank in 2009,” says Bancroft, “because my Triathlon career was starting to reach a new level, giving me the opportunity to travel around this country as well as to Mexico and Canada for large competitive races.” She continues, “Training and racing at the Ironman level in this sport is a tremendous amount of work. I devote many hours to preparing for the races so I can achieve my personal goals. It is something I enjoy, but it is also very difficult. Since joining the NSB team, I have always felt that I had ‘people in my corner.’ I don’t talk about my racing a lot, so to have the community aware of some of my accomplish-

ments and reach out to congratulate me has been heartwarming and motivating. I feel like I have a whole group cheering for me behind the scenes when I travel around the country and abroad and that means the world to me af-

ter all the long hard hours to prepare. I appreciate the support of Norway Savings Bank very much.” Born a congenital quadrilateral amputee, elite Para-athlete Josh Kennison of South Paris lets nothing get in his way. It seems he was put here to provide inspiration to others. Using prosthetics, Kennison has followed his dream to become a pro-athlete. He began running track and playing soccer as a middle school student. In 2010, Kennison became a member of the USA Paralympics Track Team. He has earned four medals at the Endeavor Games and wants to bring home the gold. Last year, Kennison competed at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships

and won a bronze in the 100m T43 sprint. He’s currently the 2nd ranked American in the 100 and 200 meters and the top ranked T43 jumper in the nation. When he’s not pursuing his dream, he’s involved with the Never Say Never Foundation, which provides running legs, wheelchairs and other equipment to help amputees remain active and he volunteers as a mentor at Camp No Limits, helping kids and adults learn how to do anything they want. Kennison is also a motivational speaker. “Before I even spent a lot of time at Norway Savings Bank,” says Kennison, “I had a checking account there. Every time I went in there, it truly was a wonderful exprience. The employees knew names of their customers and they were always happy. That is why I allowed them to use my name.” “Being a member of the NSB team,” he continues, “is pretty amazing. To be part of a team with names like Wescott and Cowens is great, then to add on another local athlete in Angela is perfect. Norway Savings Bank chose a great team.”

Business Community Rallies Behind

Local Athletic Programs

“It’s all about the kids,” says Monica LaVerdiere of Bearfoot Realty. Her company, like others in the area, supplies food after a football game. The tradition of feeding the football players following each home and away game began with parents contributing the food. Several years ago, LaVerdiere and a few other parents reached out to local businesses such as Amatos, Boomers, KFC, Mallard Mart, Pizza Hut, Polly’s Variety and Sideline Variety, who have continued the tradition with donations. Hannaford supplies plates, napkins and cups. Typically, 63 people partake in the post-game meal, including players and coaches. That’s a lot of mouths to feed. “The kids are very appreciative,” LaVerdiere says. “It’s surprising how many of them say thank you. It makes us really want to keep doing it.” She realizes that the athletes also appreciate that their parents, friends, teachers and businesses

support them 100% whether they are winning or losing. In the past, forty-nine businesses also supported the football team by sponsoring the annual golf tournament. The 9th annual golf tournament will be held on June 22nd at Norway Country Club. It’s not just football that the area supports. School spirit is evident as you drive around the region during any season. Business signs proclaim “Go Vikings” and “Go Knights,” encouraging teams from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School and Poland Regional High School, respectively. The Oxford Hills Athletic Boosters is a non-profit organization that covers the cost of athletic programs not offset by the school budget.

Without this small group of volunteers, the youth sports programs would not be as strong as they are now. To raise funds, the boosters run the snack shack during home games. They also host the well-attended Harlem Superstars basketball game each year. Anna Cyr, president of the club, says that local businesses support their efforts as well. This past year they started what they hope will be an annual event, a live auction with big ticket items donated by community members and businesses, e.g. skybox tickets to a Boston Red Sox game. Look for the second annual auction at Four Seasons in South Paris on September 28th, during Oxford Hills Homecoming Weekend. The following morning, the boosters

will host the annual homecoming parade, one of the largest in Maine. In the Poland school district, the Knights Pride Booster Club led by Chris Cote also creates a community of support. Athletic Director Don King notes that local businesses such as Poland Spring Golf and Resort, Down East Machine and Engineering (DEME), Nestle Waters, Hancock Lumber, Minot Country Store, Dad’s Place, and Fairlawn Golf and Country Club make generous contributions. Nestle Waters helped with Poland Regional High School’s participation in the School Spirit Challenge raising money and food for the Good Shepherd Food Bank. Fairlawn Golf and Country Club hosts the annual Spring Golf tournament to help the baseball program. Poland Spring Golf and Resort continues to be the home course for the high school golf team. “From donations for fan buses or lumber to signage and well wishes, our community has been there for the kids,” King says. “Our

change to playing evening games has helped to bring people out in the fall. This has really helped in building community between all three towns in our school district: Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland. The community building was evident at the recent state championship for boys’ basketball in Bangor. The people that came out for that game and the playoff games leading up to it were numerous and tremendously supportive.” Sometimes it’s one team that captures the imagination and passion of an entire community and helps everyone feel a sense of pride. This past year, both high schools sent

teams to championship playoffs and filled the stands to overflowing. “Our activities provide a source of pride and involvement for our kids,” says King. “Our kids learn many lessons and bring our communities together through involvement in athletics, music, and drama. It is great to work with a community that recognizes the value of these activities and continuously supports the kids’ and schools’ efforts.” People like the LaVerdieres, Cyrs and Cotes are involved because of the huge impact these programs have had on their children’s lives. Even though the teams don’t always get to play in state tournaments, it’s all about having fun and knowing that a passionate and supportive fan base is behind them. Go Vikings and Go Knights.

Fair Days

Waterford World’s Fair July 18-20, 2014

36 Green Road North Waterford www.waterfordworldsfair.org

“A Little Agricultural Fair with a Big Heart.” The Waterford World’s Fair, which spans three days, began as Tom Green’s Fair in 1850. The name was changed around 1900 and today survives as possibly the tiniest “World’s Fair.” True to its roots, the fair celebrates all things rural and agricultural. And it continues to grow. Agricultural exhibits, displays, demonstrations and contests including the pleasure horse game show, sheep dog trials, pig scram-

bles, skillet toss and backseat driver contest, are scheduled. Numerous vendors, plus fun and educational activities for children round out the fair. Entertainment includes local artists such as Trailer Trash, Black Cat Road, Milltown Roadhouse, Heather Pierson and the Jon Sarty Band. New this year: • Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull with a progressive drag like the big tractors use. • Saturday at 4pm, Mad Science, featuring the fun, amazement and wonder of all things science--Education wrapped in Entertainment! • Sunday is Maine Outdoors Day with an antler display, game fish filleting, wild turkey tasting and fly-tying activities.

CHAMBER EVENTS Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony

March 7, 2014 The Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony is the highlight of the Chamber’s year. It’s an evening of high-powered networking followed by a wonderful meal and inspiring ceremony for all who attend. Members gather to celebrate the achievements of the greater Oxford Hills and present awards that recognize individuals and businesses throughout our communities.

1

On March 7, 2014, U.S. Senator Susan Collins attended the evening’s ceremony as the keynote speaker. Collins is the state’s most senior Senator in Washington D.C. and known for her work in facilitating bipartisan compromise. She is also a champion for small businesses and has earned a 100 percent rating from the National Federation of Independent Business. Nearly 300 business leaders and community members attended the sold-out event held at the Four Seasons Function Center in South Paris and the dinner’s Signature Sponsor was Norway Savings Bank. Awards presented during the dinner included Rising Star of the Year: Buy the Fire of Oxford; Employee of the Year: Catherine Fanjoy Coffey, SAD 17 Business Manager; Business of the Year: Oxford Federal Credit Union; and Community Service: Ron Kugell.

CHAMBER EVENTS Business After Hours

Monthly The Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours events aim to bring Chamber members together to support, celebrate, acknowledge and network with other business partners in the greater Oxford Hills area. Always held on the first Thursday of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Business After Hours events are open to any Chamber member to attend or host. As a host business, you open up your doors to showcase your company as well as provide food, drinks and door prizes to attendees. The Chamber provides publicity for the event, acts as host and contributes additional door prizes for attending members. It’s a great way to get out and mingle with your Chamber community while promoting your own business--and it’s a lot of fun! This event has become so popular that all of our 2014 dates are booked for the year! Plan early for 2015 and call OHCC Executive Assistant Jennifer Boenig at 743-2281 to reserve your spot. You can also get in touch with Jennifer to donate any door prizes to help promote your business during one of the After Hours events. Please check the calendar of events to see where our upcoming Business After Hours will be held.

Leon Truman Chamber Golf Classic

August 19, 2013 The largest fundraising event of the year for the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce is the Leon Truman Chamber Golf Classic. Renamed for our beloved friend and founder of the tournament, Leon Truman, it has become the largest golf event in the region. “Stubby,” as Leon was affectionately known, would have been proud to know that this event makes it possible for the Chamber to continue to serve its members throughout the year thanks to the generosity of its sponsors, including Signature Sponsor Oxford Casino, and the competitors. The 2013 event headed to Bethel and Bethel Inn Resort and Country Club. There were 28 teams that hit the links on this championship 18hole golf course. The tournament was once again a scramble format with shotgun start followed by a banquet and awards ceremony. The golfers lucked out with the weather and enjoyed playing on a picture perfect summer day. The 2014 golf classic will be on Monday, August 25 at Poland Spring Resort. Contact the Chamber office to learn how to get involved with our largest fundraiser. 65 Oxford Hills 2014 www.oxfordhillsmaine.com

CHAMBER EVENTS Oxford Hills Business Showcase

October 12, 2013 The Chamber brought back its business networking event, the Business Showcase. The event was held Saturday, October 12 at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. The Business Showcase had some new elements to help more than 70 businesses connect with each other and the community, most notably the Chili-Chowder cook off. Nine area restaurants and organizations cooked up some delicious chili and chowder and the community decided who prepared the best tasting. The Oxford Casino won for best chowder and Oxford Hills Technical School’s Culinary Arts program won for best chili. W.J. Wheeler Insurance Agency sponsored the chili-chowder event and also picked their favorites. Winning the judge’s choice for best chili was Ari’s Pizza and the best chowder was Daddy O’s. The chili-chowder cook off will return along with the Business Showcase on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. We’ll be adding some new elements again so stay tuned for those details!

OHCC Christmas Parade

November 30, 2013 A long-standing tradition, the Annual Christmas Parade has been hosted by the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce since 1971. Always scheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving starting at 11 a.m., the parade is a true celebration and kick-off to the holiday season. Members of the Chamber are encouraged to create floats that mirror each year’s theme and awards are provided for the top floats in several different categories, including small and large businesses and non-profit. It has become the largest community parade of its kind in Maine, regularly attracting more than 50 floats along with bands, cheering squads, color guards, and, of course, Santa Claus, who takes time out of his busy schedule to headline the parade each year. The 2013 Annual Christmas Parade was held on November 30 with the theme of “North Pole Christmas” and the parade route ran from Norway to South Paris. A special thanks to our parade sponsors, Oxford Casino and Oxford Networks, along with NPC-TV for providing television coverage of the event. A new addition to the parade was the L.L. Bean Bootmobile, which was still decked out in red for the Red Sox’s World Series win. We also welcomed back the parade’s original Santa and Mrs. Claus. It was truly a spectacle to behold and a great community event for all to enjoy. The 2014 parade will be held on November 29 and the theme will be “The Night Before Christmas.” Photos by Dan Sonnenfeld

CHAMBER EVENTS Festival of Trees

November 29-December 1, 2013 Glittering lights, magical displays and the fantastic sounds of the holidays greeted guests to the Chamber’s Third Annual Festival of Trees. More than 25 Chamber members and other area businesses and organizations decorated an artificial tree to create a winter wonderland at the Four Seasons Function Center in South Paris. Sponsored by the Oxford Casino, the event began the evening before the Christmas Parade with a Chamber Open House and was open to the general public on Saturday and Sunday, November 30 and December 1, 2013. All the fully decorated trees, including any gifts or goodies hanging from or underneath, were raffled off to the lucky winners who took a chance to win their favorite tree. Santa and Mrs. Claus even made an appearance during the day on Saturday and Sunday to hear Christmas wishes from the children. This event, along with the parade, is a great way to kick off the holiday season and win a fully decorated tree just in time for Christmas. The 2014 Festival of Trees will run the weekend of November 28-30 so start thinking of your tree theme now! Photos by Dan Sonnenfeld

Traditionally held the last weekend in April each year since 2001, the manufactured housing industry gathers to promote their individual businesses and the industry as a whole in a remarkable partnership. Participating in the 2014 home show once again was Schiavi Home Builders, Turn Key Homes of Maine and Twin Town Homes. Manufactured housing is one of the largest industries in the Oxford Hills region and certainly serves as the hub of the industry in Maine. These businesses employ hundreds of people in manufacturing plants and five retail locations displaying dozens of homes on a regular basis. Thousands of potential homebuyers come to the area each year during this three-day event to tour the beautiful homes that are on display, making the event a huge draw for the communities of the Oxford Hills. Returning in 2014 as the Signature Sponsor of this event was Norway Savings Bank. Norway Savings Bank had loan officers on site at the model homes to discuss financing options with potential buyers. If you’re in the market for a new home and aren’t sure what you’re looking for, come and see all the options manufactured homes offer. You may just find your dream home! Photos by Dan Sonnenfeld
