Welcome Welcome to the new season!

The coming season is packed with an eclectic programme of events designed to attract our valued regular customers and also the many visitors who rightly choose Buxton as the perfect destination in the summer months.

WELCOME APRIL

The Opera House welcomes the Buxton International Festival with a thrilling programme of opera, concerts and talks whilst musical fans will enjoy the energy of the ever popular Footloose, packed with hits of the 1980s. The renowned National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company make a welcome return in late July and we are also excited to be hosting Buxton’s first comedy festival in early September. Sponsored by Thornbridge Brewery, the headliners are top comedians Jimmy Carr and Joel Dommett along with a Friday night comedy music gig from The Lancashire Hotpots. We also have a Comedy Club 4 Kids and hilarious silent comedy duo the Kagools, all topped off with workshops, comedy drama, funny films and fringe circuit favourites.

We are thrilled to be the recipient of a new grand piano, kindly donated by the generous legacy of David and Rowena Hammond. This fantastic instrument will be officially unveiled at a special lunchtime concert in May when Dominic Degavino will play a popular programme of piano classics.

We are always looking at improving service and comfort for our customers. A new website will go live in April which will be easier to navigate and book online, and following our recent family survey, we have introduced new ways of sharing information to make your family visit an easily organised and pleasurable experience.

So whether it's dance, drama or star names, you will be sure of a warm welcome to your beautiful theatre in the hills.

Back Stage Pass Opera House Theatre Tours Take a look behind the scenes at one of the country’s finest examples of a Frank Matcham theatre. In our guided theatre tours, discover the fascinating history of this iconic building, from its Edwardian beginning right up to the present day.

Starting from the Dress Circle bar, the tour will take you through to the auditorium and backstage where you will get a glimpse of the inner workings of the theatre.

KALEIDOSCOPE COMMUNITY CHOIR

MINI MOVERS & GROOVERS

If you love to sing then come and join our friendly Kaleidoscope Community Choir delivered in partnership with Buxton Festival. From choral classics and favourite hymns to pop and folk, you don’t have to audition to be part of the choir. Just come along and join us for an hour of singing upstairs in the Old Clubhouse each Tuesday from 1pm.

If you have children under 5 then our Mini Movers & Groovers sessions are ideal for you!

Through a mix of creative movement and dance, toddlers and children can learn new skills in a fun and relaxed setting. Sessions use imaginative play, movement and music to help teach balance and coordination.

Having survived a childhood on the infamous Falls Road, West Belfast, at the height of its troubles, Brian Kennedy has beaten all the odds to carve an extraordinary career in music. His work with Van Morrison has been well documented.

The Belfast legend invited Kennedy to a rehearsal one day that resulted in him being featured in a string of recordings including the now unforgettable Blues & Soul Revue.

Tracing the Fab Four’s journey through the 60s, every tiny detail is meticulously covered from costumes to authentic period instruments; from their witty 'Scouse' banter to their 'inflection perfect' vocal mimicry. The Ups and Downs of a Tremadog Tea Maker will cover his early climbing days in Wales and the Dolomites. He’ll talk about his alpine soloing on the Eiger, Matterhorn, and Mont Blanc, BASE jumping from Angel Falls in Venezuela, as well as climbing the Old Man of Hoy and Devils Tower in his 70s. Eric’s exploits were years ahead of their time and he is regarded by many as Britain’s most successful solo climber.

Made up of three award-winning young musicians, the Scarlet Trio formed whilst studying for the String Leadership Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music. They were awarded the Hirsch Prize for their performance of Beethoven’s String Trio in C minor and have since relished playing the small but fantastic repertoire for string trio.

Members of the Scarlet Trio will be available for a meet and greet following the performance.

Dillie Keane Dillie Keane takes a short break from her Fascinating Aïda gal pals to present her first solo show in 558 years.

The Original Panama Jazz Band Jon Critchley, trumpet Dave Thomas, clarinet/vocals Laurie Cooper, trombone Hugh Potter, string bass Malcolm Hogarth, piano Bill Buck, drums The Original Panama Jazz Band has been playing together since 1954. Their line-up has seen 40 musicians pass through and the current sextet features some of the most experienced and versatile musicians on the North West jazz scene. The Claire Dobinson School of Dancing presents Chris Dean’s Syd Lawrence Orchestra Raise the Barre

Golden Night of Swing 50th Anniversary Tour

In 1967, Syd Lawrence formed what was to become the UK's most successful and longest running big band. The band performed in theatres all over Europe, regularly featuring on many TV shows such as Les Dawson Show, Morecambe and Wise Show, Pebble Mill, Wheel Tappers and Shunters and a Royal Variety performance.

With Radio 2 broadcasts every week and numerous album recordings, the orchestra also toured with Tony Bennett, Matt Monro, Frankie Vaughan and Mel Torme and played concerts with Shirley Bassey, all adding to the orchestra's gravitas.

Come and join this wonderful orchestra to celebrate 50 glorious years of swing!

Showcasing the talents of local children from the youngest ballerinas to those aspiring to dance professionally, the show promises to be a fun filled celebration of dance!

BUXTON FILM FESTIVAL 10–17 APRIL Welcome to the 5th annual Buxton Film Festival presented by Buxton Film.

As ever, Buxton Film is presenting a feast of great films – a mix of current and classics including a few for families to enjoy together.

It was recently discovered that the director Robert Stevenson, who made many well-known films such as Mary Poppins, was born in Buxton. With generous help from Film Hub North West Central, Buxton Film are able to commemorate his life and work with special events, an exhibition and some of his best films – they are also publishing a small biographical pamphlet about Robert Stevenson, so look out for that.

The Scarecrows’ Wedding

Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay are excellent scarecrows (they scare a lot of crows). Harry loves Betty, and Betty loves Harry – so they decide to get married and Harry sets off to search for their wedding day essentials including a dress of feathers, a bunch of flowers and a necklace made from shells.

However, when the farmer notices he is missing a scarecrow, he replaces Harry with the devilishly smooth but dangerous Reginald Rake. Dashing, daring and ever so cool, can Reginald persuade Betty that he is the scarecrow for her? Will Harry make it back in the nick of time before Reginald ruins their special day?

Following last year’s sell out success; the Big Session is back in Buxton for the third year running. Now over four days, welcome to the first festival of the summer and some of the biggest names in folk music.

Hosted by Oysterband, who this year are joined by Eliza Carthy and Saul Rose, the Big Session Festival boasts a whole weekend of live music, walks and even a beer festival. While Sunday night’s concert, Levellers Acoustic, and our Big Session Ceilidh have now sold out, there’s still availability for other events.

Now Blackbeard’s Tea Party bring their brand of gutsy folk rock to Buxton for the first time.

When the Oyster writing team of Jones/Prosser/ Telfer came up with a song last year called I Built This House, a friend said the title sounded like somebody's life story...and an idea was born. On the crest of an almost 40-year international career, and with their distinctive mix of crafted lyrics, big tunes and deep experience of British traditional music still evolving, the time was right for a fresh overview.

Since her debut solo album, Sweet Visitor, arrived in late 2014, Nancy Kerr has emerged as one of the foremost composers of modern folk and social commentary songs in the British Isles. A writer of rare style, Kerr's music has drawn comparisons to William Blake and has inspired some to call her ‘Folk's Poet Laureate’. Increasingly fascinated by the role of the environment in music, literature, art and film, the compositions that make up her second release, Instar, explore the themes of human/ecological interaction that lie beneath the surface of many traditional folk songs.

Buxton Local Artists

Topping the bill this year are Route 66 – probably the most enduring band Buxton has ever produced. Formed in 1989, they have played over 1,000 gigs up and down the country keeping British RnB well and truly alive. Joining them are Bin 53 Four, now a 4-piece that’s been taking local venues by storm with their infectious blend of rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and country rock.

Also on the bill: Rhi & Em, Paul Wood & Michael Clement and Culpepper.

Freddie Garner Jazz Quartet Freddie Garner, piano Andor Jensen, saxophone Stuart Riley, double bass Phil Bennett, drums Pianist Freddie Garner, who plays in the style of the great Kenny Barron, Victor Feldman and Oscar Peterson and names Cannonball Adderley as one of his greatest influences, will be presenting his mix of jazz standards and originals. Expect to hear Latin and ballads, straight ahead jazz of the post-bop era and homages to the all-time greats.

Richard Askwith The journalist and author discusses his latest book Today We Die A Little: The Rise And Fall Of Emil Zátopek, Olympic Legend. The new work is a definitive biography of the Czechoslovakian soldier who revolutionised endurance in the 40s and 50s.

Zátopek’s achievements on the track were unprecedented: he won all three distance-running golds at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 – one of them in his first ever attempt at a marathon. His triumphs put his country on the map, yet when Soviet tanks moved in, Zátopek paid a heavy price for his brave stance.

There will be a support speaker, Marcus Scotney, a short film screening and an audio-visual presentation by Ourea Events.

A rising young star and passionate performer, Dominic started studying the piano when he was six, gaining a place at Chetham’s School of Music shortly after.

Adam, 20, flies off into his adventures. Suddenly all contact stops. Life for his family is a whirl of uncertainty: What? When? Where? Who? Why? How? There are unanswered questions, imagined scenarios, different for each of them and growing ever darker.

Dominic has achieved considerable competition success, including winning the RNCM Gold Medal Competition and the Foundazione Antonio Carlo Monzino prize at the Imola International Piano Awards in Italy.

What do they do? What would you do? Then hope arrives, unexpectedly and unpredictably. And now a gripping rollercoaster of a plot turns the play into a psychological thriller, as it takes us on an exploration of the unpredictability of life and how to cope with the uncontrollable.

Formed in 1969 by former busker Dave Brock, Hawkwind have seen numerous line-ups throughout the years, but Brock remains at the helm. They played at the first Glastonbury Festival and are widely acknowledged with creating a brand new genre of music – space rock.

Following the success of Silver Machine in 1972, the band went on tour with the mind blowing Space Ritual, which set the precedent for all future Hawkwind shows. The barrage of light, sound, dance and theatrics has since become a hallmark of their shows.

Joining the line-up is Buxton based Mr Dibs on vocals and electronics, who has been a long-time collaborator with the band.

Lizzy Hawker Journey

An endurance athlete with a passion for long journeys across tough terrain, Lizzy Hawker is the five-time winner of the Ultra Tour Du Mont Blanc and world record holder for 24 hours on the road. She set a new world record running from Everest Base Camp to Kathmandu.

In her talk, Lizzy will focus on her 1,000-mile epic across the Nepal Himalaya. The challenge might not be something many of us will undertake but the lessons she learned can help us all in our everyday lives.

Killer Queen have been performing their tribute to Queen since 1993. Their expert musicianship, extraordinary energy and accurate portrayal of one of the world’s greatest live bands have rightfully earned Killer Queen the title of Queen ‘tribute royalty’.

The Piano Portraits Tour Currently celebrating his 50th year as a professional musician, keyboard player, songwriter and broadcaster, Rick Wakeman recently made chart history when his Piano Portraits album became the first solo piano album to enter the UK’s Top 10.

Initially inspired by the unprecedented reaction to his performance of David Bowie’s Life On Mars on BBC Radio 2 in early 2016, Piano Portraits features instrumental versions of hits Wakeman originally performed on Space Oddity, Morning Has Broken & Wondrous Stories. Others have been specifically chosen for their wonderful melodies, including Stairway To Heaven, Help and Eleanor Rigby.

The show will include at least eight of the pieces on the album, plus other musical surprises, and all will be interspersed with hilarious anecdotes from this well-known and accomplished raconteur.

The Lavena Trio Programme to include Debussy and Mathias.

Formed in October 2015 while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Lavena Trio performed in the RNCM’s spotlight series, were finalists in the Brodsky Ensemble Prize and enjoy coaching with the many chamber music specialists at the RNCM. Lily Caunt is finishing her second year of a Master in Music (Performance). Chloe Roberts is currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Music at the RNCM where she studies with Eira Lynn Jones. Jessica Thornhill graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) in 2015 before continuing her studies at a postgraduate level at the RNCM. The Lavena Trio will be available for a meet and greet over coffee following the performance.

The Peak District Music Centres’ (PDMC) bands, orchestras and choirs return to the Opera House for their hugely popular annual Gala Concerts. Relaxed Performance Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming. Additionally, many families with children who express themselves loudly, or get up and move around, find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances.

With the support of the Mayor’s Charity and local companies, we are delighted to be able to hold a relaxed performance of Sleeping Beauty at 5.30pm on Tuesday 12 December.

To make the performance more comfortable we will adapt the script, sound, lighting and length of the performance and provide a quiet space where children can relax and unwind if they need a few moments away from the action. There is also a visual story available to download from the website to help prepare for your trip to the theatre.

Tickets for the Relaxed Performance are £10, with one essential companion being free of charge.

Join the Giant Cash Bonanza Lottery and help raise funds for good causes including Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre.

The lottery was created in 2002 to help raise funds for charities and good causes across the country. In 2016, it raised a staggering £110,000 for Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre and awarded over 1,400 cash prizes to its members, including an annual jackpot of £10,000. All subscriptions paid by you will be donated solely for the benefit of the Opera House and the Arts Centre, after deduction of money for prizes and reasonable expenses of administering the lottery.

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly.

APRIL INFO

The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees. The cost of a ticket is made up of: • Deal Value: The face value of the ticket set by our clients • Booking Fee: All tickets, except where we sell tickets for a third party, include a 7.5% Booking Fee. This fee goes towards the running cost of our ticketing system, ticket printing, staffing and all credit, debit, cheque, and cash handling costs. These fees help us to stay an effective business, which in turn helps us reinvest in our theatres and continually improve the service we provide • Restoration Levy: Buxton Opera House is an exquisitely beautiful Edwardian theatre and one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design. To help maintain and operate both the Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre, the cost of tickets includes a restoration levy of £1 for tickets over £10 and 50p for tickets under £10. The Opera House Box Office opening hours vary depending on performance times, but is usually open Monday to Saturday: 10am to 6pm (10am to 8pm when there is a performance) and Sunday: 4pm to 8pm (when there is a performance).

The Pavilion Arts Centre box office is only open for one hour before an event.

There is no box office for the Studio Theatre or events outside our venues, so please book your tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased on the door, but we are unable to accept card payments.

For special events and festivals, the box office will usually be open half an hour before the performance for ticket collection and sales.

PAYMENT

All major credit cards are accepted and there is no additional fee for paying by credit or debit card. We accept National Theatre Tokens as well as our own Gift Vouchers.

DELIVERY OPTIONS

You are welcome to collect your tickets from the Box Office during normal opening hours, but if you prefer to have your tickets posted we charge a delivery fee of 85p which covers the ticket printing and postage cost. You can also print your tickets at home free of charge.

TICKET EXCHANGE

We cannot exchange tickets or money for a different event. Where there is more than one performance of an event we can exchange tickets where available. This requires a minimum of 48 hours notice and there is £1.50 administration fee for exchanging tickets.

LOST TICKETS

We can reprint tickets on the night of the performance at a cost of £1.50. Proof of ID will be required.

REFUNDS

We are unable to refund the cost of the tickets unless a show is cancelled. Postage charges are non–refundable.

RESERVATIONS

Reservations cannot be taken for events that are likely to sell out such as high profile music and comedy performances. Other reservations can only be held for seven days, but for very popular shows you will be asked to pay for your tickets in advance. If you book on the same day as the show, your tickets will be held until 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

CHANGES TO PROGRAMME

If a show is cancelled we will try to contact customers in advance. We publish any cancellation or unavoidable changes to performances on our website and social media.

Please check before travelling. All information is correct at time of going to press.

ADMISSION

The management reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave our buildings at any time. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable point in the performance at the discretion of the management.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS

Occasionally we may need to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre to the Studio (or vice versa).

Numbered tickets may change to general admittance, in which case we are unable to offer refunds.

DISCOUNTS AND SPECIAL OFFERS

On many events we offer concessions to seniors, children, students, disabled customers, groups and customers in receipt of some benefits.

Offers are subject to availability and are not available in conjunction with any other offer or on previous ticket purchases. You may be asked to provide proof of eligibility. Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre reserves the right to withdraw the offer at any time.

• Senior: we class anyone aged 60 and over as a Senior concession.

• Children: we class anyone aged 15 and under as a child.

• Students: we class anyone in full-time education, or a part-time student with an NUS card as a student.

• Groups: we class groups of eight or more people as a group (group size may vary depending on event).

Where available, we currently offer concessions for customers in receipt of Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment & Support Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance. Proof of eligibility is required.

Essential Companions If there are discounts available on a performance we can offer a free companion ticket to anyone in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or anyone accompanying an Access Card holder with the +1 symbol. Other essential companions and Derbyshire County Council Carers Emergency Card holders can still receive a 50% discount on full price tickets as long as there are discounts available on a performance. These companion tickets are only available if you are accompanying the person you are caring for and are subject to availability.

Standby Tickets Standby tickets are sometimes available to students age 16+ and anyone in receipt of JSA/ Income Support. The tickets are usually priced at £10 and are available one hour before the performance, subject to availability.

MATCHAM If you visit the theatre regularly, joining our Matcham Membership scheme will make sure you get the best seats at the best price. Benefits include: • Half price tickets to some ‘first night’ performances • Discounts on many shows

• Priority booking for some events

• Advance email notification about new shows • Reservations held until one week before a performance, or two weeks for very busy or sold out performances

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an accessible toilet. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system.

The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs

DANCING

We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments.

This works through a headset rather than your hearing aid, please reserve a headset through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices.

Dancing is not permitted in the Dress Circle, Upper Circle or Gallery areas, so if you would like to dance, please book Stalls seats. For your safety, no standing is allowed in the Upper Circle sides and boxes.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Assistance dogs are welcome.

You’re welcome to take photos of our beautiful theatre before and after the performance, however photography and filming is not allowed during the performance.

CHILDREN

RESTRICTED VIEW

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a small number of booster seats available on first come first served basis.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children.

Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown.

The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three years old. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old.

CONCESSIONS

A small number of seats on all levels of the theatre have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience, so when you book online, an information box appears over these seats to let you know that there may be a restricted or side view, if you would like more information please contact our Box Office before booking. When attending an opera, please note that surtitles may not be visible from some seats, again, please check with the Box Office before booking. Family tickets are not available on restricted view seats.

SMOKING Both Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre are no smoking buildings and e– cigarettes are not permitted.

REFRESHMENTS We have three bars in the Opera House: the Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle bars which are open for pre–show and interval drinks 45 minutes before each performance. You can

Buxton is easy to reach via the A6, A515 and A53. The theatre is well signposted from the town centre. There is free parking after 6pm on the upper level of the Pavilion Gardens car park (don’t use the downstairs car park as it closes early) or on some streets close to the theatre which are not covered by the Residents Parking Scheme. There is additional evening and weekend parking at St. Thomas More School, Palace Fields, Buxton SK17 6AF – please leave some money in the honesty Box!
