Welcome Welcome to the new season!

As ever, we are thrilled to present our new and exciting programme. Our valued customers know that a great theatre experience in the glittering atmosphere of the Opera House is a truly memorable occasion. We also welcome new visitors to the Opera House, set in the magical location of Buxton with its wonderful gardens and many superb restaurants and hotels, and this season is packed with an inspiring mix of top class productions.

Last season, both the English Touring Opera and the Russian State Ballet played to packed houses, and both these popular companies are returning with thrilling new productions. There are many choices for families including the ever delightful Tiger Who Came to Tea and of course our famous pantomime. Last year the pantomime broke box office records, so early booking is advised for this year's Sleeping Beauty.

Two Tony and Olivier award-winning musical comedies are set to take Buxton by storm. The hugely successful and heartwarming Hairspray will transport you back to the beat of the 1960s and Monty Python's Spamalot will have you rolling in the aisles.

The season also includes Buxton's first Comedy Festival weekend headlined by Jimmy Carr, the Buxton International Festival Book Weekend, a new production of the much loved Brassed Off and a host of big names including Derren Brown, Barbara Dickson and Jason Donovan. This will provide an exciting platform for local talent of all ages with opportunities in performance, design and technical skills. Meanwhile...

KALEIDOSCOPE COMMUNTY CHOIR

MINI MOVERS & GROOVERS

If you love to sing then come and join our friendly Kaleidoscope Community Choir delivered in partnership with Buxton Festival. From choral classics and favourite hymns to pop and folk, you don’t have to audition to be part of the choir. Just come along and join us for an hour of singing upstairs in the Old Clubhouse each Tuesday from 1pm.

If you have children under 5 then our Mini Movers & Groovers sessions are ideal for you!

Through a mix of creative movement and dance, toddlers and children can learn new skills in a fun and relaxed setting. Sessions use imaginative play, movement and music to help teach balance and coordination. Sessions take place on Monday morning from 10am to 10.45am during term time.

From September, we will be working hard with our Young Company to create a devised piece based on a chosen theme from the hit musical Hairspray. We will explore the theme through movement, physical theatre and mask work, which will culminate in a final piece to be performed to the cast of Hairspray, family and friends.

If you are aged between 5–15, we still have a limited number of spaces to join our Young Company and take part in this exciting opportunity.

2017 sees festival favourites the Lancashire Hotpots celebrate ten years of Chippy Teas and Shopmobility Scooters. In that time, the Hotpots have built a well-earned reputation as the number one party night out in the North West. Join Bernard and the boys for a great big Northern knees-up full of sing-along music and madcap fun.

Our regular comedy club returns as part of our first ever Buxton Comedy Festival. Watch a line-up of some new and not-so-new faces from the comedy club circuit.

Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children and their families... but without the rude bits! It's just like a normal comedy club, but it's on in the day, kids are allowed in and there’s a higher than usual chance of heckles.

Weaving recent stories with childhood memories, Knock Knock is a brilliant storytelling show about identity, trust, family and friendship. The show also explores the reasons why Damian came up with his penniless tour raising money for Shelter, which took him from Land’s End to Edinburgh over 120 gigs and six months without money or transport.

One of the UK’s most energetic and exciting comedians returns to the road with his solo show, Joel Dommett: LIVE. Catch the star of 2016’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Sky 1’s Bring The Noise as he delivers his high octane comedy to venues up and down the country.

Joel came onto the comedy scene in 2007 and has never looked back, after receiving great critical acclaim for his Edinburgh Fringe shows. He has gone on to appear in numerous television shows including Impractical Jokers, Reality Bites, Russell Howard's Good News, Drunk History (Comedy Central) and has performed in acting roles for Popatron and Skins.

This fun-filled workshop will give you an introduction to physical comedy by exploring clowning techniques and improvisation. It will allow the performer to develop the tools to become a confident artist of this classic art form.

There will be a devised scene at the end of the workshop for family and friends!

Dean Downing Having started racing aged 8, Dean has achieved an abundance of cycling achievements, retiring from competition in 2014. After graduating with a degree in construction management, Dean began his full time cycling adventure gaining experience racing as an amateur in some of the semi-classic road races in Belgium.

In 2004, he competed at all the World Cup track events and World Championships in Melbourne and has raced with the Rapha Condor Squad for six seasons, Madison Genesis and NFTO. Dean has won races both at home and abroad, including becoming British Champion in 2001, 2003 and 2008.

Whilst competing in the Tour of Britain and other stage races around the world, Dean has won over 70 races in the last 10 years.

Centenary of Jazz

Chris Barber OBE is one of the last British Jazz legends and an icon of traditional jazz in the UK. For more than 68 years he has been active in the music scene promoting, recording and touring with his band.

In early 1917, the very first jazz record was released by the Original Dixieland Jass Band: Livery Stable Blues.

This year he and his band will celebrate 100 years of jazz.

In the beginning of the 90s, Chris Barber and partnering label Timeless Records rereleased this very special record under the sub label Timeless Historical Series, where Chris coordinated the label as co-producer.

Now, in 2017 and a century later, the record from Original Dixieland Jass Band will have existed 100 years.

Welsh stars Rhydian, Richard & Adam come together with their live band to bring you a truly magical evening of classical arias and contemporary songs.

Doug Scott’s mountaineering highpoint was the first ascent of Everest by its enormous South West Face – Everest: The Hard Way – but his greatest adventure was undoubtedly his first ascent, accident and then escape from the Ogre.

This month’s headliner Carly Smallman is terrified of competition. That was a bit of a problem when she found herself in the Musical Comedy Awards finals in 2011!

But with her unique blend of outrageous impropriety and adorable sincerity, Carly has established herself as a firm favourite on the comedy circuit.

Also on the bill is ‘secret comedian’ Mike Newall. Mike’s timing is the envy of performers and he’s living proof that some people are just funny. Finally we have ADHD performer Theresa Farlow. By day she’s a scientist, but the UK comedy scene has allowed her to channel her surplus energy into humour. Marvyn Dickinson comperes.

Crawling Down the Ogre

The Ogre is the most difficult of the world’s high mountains to climb. In 1977 Doug Scott and Chris Bonington made the first ascent; their subsequent descent, in the dark, immediately became an epic. Abseiling off the summit tower, Doug slipped on ice and swung into the cliff he had just climbed, breaking both legs. Shortly after, a storm blew in and their escape became one of mountaineering’s greatest epics.

Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz Mart Rodger, clarinet Alan Dent, trumpet Chris Pendlebury, percussion Eric Brierley, trombone Louis Lince, banjo/guitar Alan Wilcox, bass Roger Browne, piano Playing since 1982, Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz was inspired when its band leader, Rodger, visited New Orleans, the birth place of jazz. He was asked to sit in on a session at the Maison Bourbon and the audience response was exhilarating. Since then, Rodger has been playing with his band at venues across the region.

As always, lunches are available in the Arts Centre bar from 12.30pm.

This year, Grimethorpe Colliery Band celebrates its centenary, with a history of brass band performance stretching back to the First World War. The band have been national and open champions on numerous occasions, making Grimethorpe Colliery one of the world’s leading brass bands.

As well as numerous awards and championship titles, the band has also received a BAFTA nomination for its contributions to the global hit movie Brassed Off, for which Grimethorpe village and the band were the focal point.

The band continues to delight audiences across the globe while also supporting their local community.

Boardman Tasker Night Lady Windermere’s Fan At the time they disappeared on the north east ridge of Everest, Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker were living in the High Peak. This special event in their home community will celebrate their lives and achievements. A number of their friends and colleagues will talk about them, their climbs and their books which were the inspiration for setting up the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature.

The evening programme will commence with a reading by Martin Wragg from The Shining Mountain, Peter Boardman’s award-winning first book, followed by a similar delivery by Steve Dean from Joe Tasker’s great work, The Savage Arena.

There will also be lectures from Andy Cave and Steve Venables and a fundraising collection in aid of the Boardman Tasker Trust.

Calyx, a new commission by Sandrine Monin, is inspired by and based on the book of poems The Flowers of Evil by Charles Baudelaire. The work explores the themes of beauty, desire and decadence. Beast, by former Phoenix dancer Douglas Thorpe, immerses the audience into the darkest reaches of the mind, using six dancers in a performance that is as powerful and brutal as it is beautiful. Maybe Yes Maybe, Maybe No by Aletta Collins incorporates the use of a live microphone to blend movement and voice, creating a uniquely witty piece of dance.

Formed in September 2015 at the Royal Northern College of Music, Louko Piano Trio have gone on to win the Hirsch Prize for outstanding performance of a work by Beethoven and the Nossek Prize for the best performance of a piece from the Romantic period.

Last year the Louko Trio was the first prize winner of the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Chamber Music Competition in London in which their performance was praised for being ‘uniquely involving’. They were recently chosen as one of the four ensembles to participate in Music Coll 2016.

Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon comes to Buxton with The Vaudevillians, a bawdy, rowdy musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales.

Throughout the 1920s, Kitty Witless and Dr Dan Von Dandy toured the US as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, a devastating avalanche buried them under two tons of snow – instantly freezing them alive.

But thanks to global warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Now they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs in this vintage cabaret with a twist of drag.

Relaxed Performance

Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming and they may find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances.

With the support of the Mayor’s Charity and local companies, we are delighted to be able to hold a relaxed performance of Sleeping Beauty at 5.30pm on Tuesday 12 December.

To make the performance more comfortable we will adapt the script, sound, lighting and length of the performance and provide a quiet space where children can relax and unwind if they need a few moments away from the action. There is also a visual story available to download from the website to help prepare for your trip to the theatre.

Tickets for the Relaxed Performance are £10, with one essential companion being free of charge.

& Aleks Kashefi Mofrad In 2006, Nicky was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy and reconstruction. In 2016, to celebrate 10 years being cancer free and to raise money for the cancer charity, she ran the Double Bob Graham.

Nicky will give an insight into her start in long-distance running, progressing from the Dewsbury 10km in 2000 to setting the Double Bob Graham record. She’ll also talk about her upcoming races, the Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge and the Ultra Tour Monta Rosa, alongside her training, challenges, setbacks and continuing to compete at 50.

There will also be a short film screening and an audiovisual presentation.

Both Yuan Gong and Feng Ran hail from China and met at the Royal Northern College of Music where they now both study. Gong's brash and energetic comedy style has been seen on NBC and E4, and made her the winner of the 2015 Funny Women Stage Award for stand-up.

Feng Ran has attended and performed in some of the most prestigious concerts and festivals in Europe, such as a concert for the opening ceremony of the TivoliVredenburg Concert Hall in Utrecht, Netherlands in June 2014.

They’ve been at the forefront of the music scene for over three decades and their visits to Buxton over the years have been particularly popular. Emerging from the North West’s folk clubs in the 1970s, the Weavers made their television debut on the BBC talent show We’ll Call You. Since then, audiences have fallen in love with their unique blend of comedy and music and the band remain true to their motto ‘keep folk smiling’.

Jason Manford is back with a work in progress show ahead of his national tour in 2018, which promises to feature a wealth of comedy anecdotes, misunderstandings and audience banter delivered with Jason’s likeable charm and teasingly intelligent wit.

The lottery was created in 2002 to help raise funds for charities and good causes across the country. In 2016, it raised a staggering £110,000 for Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre and awarded over 1,400 cash prizes to its members, including an annual jackpot of £10,000. All subscriptions paid by you will be donated solely for the benefit of the Opera House and the Arts Centre, after deduction of money for prizes and reasonable expenses of administering the lottery.

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly.

SEPTEMBER INFO

The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees. The cost of a ticket is made up of: • Deal Value: The face value of the ticket set by our clients • Booking Fee: All tickets, except where we sell tickets for a third party, include a 7.5% Booking Fee. This fee goes towards the running cost of our ticketing system, ticket printing, staffing and all credit, debit, cheque, and cash handling costs. These fees help us to stay an effective business, which in turn helps us reinvest in our theatres and continually improve the service we provide • Restoration Levy: Buxton Opera House is an exquisitely beautiful Edwardian theatre and one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design. To help maintain and operate both the Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre, the cost of tickets includes a restoration levy of £1 for tickets over £10 and 50p for tickets under £10. Tickets for some community events and other venues are exempt from the restoration levy.

ONLINE BOOKINGS

Not all tickets, concessions and special offers are available to book online. In some parts of the theatre there are seats with a restricted view of the stage. Please contact the Box Office for advice when booking these seats. If you book online at www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk you can: • Login to your account and change your preferences • Become a Matcham Card member and have your discount automatically added to your basket • Choose your seat from our seating plan or be allocated the ‘best seat’ available at the time of booking • Print your tickets at home

BOX OFFICE OPENING TIMES

The Opera House Box Office opening hours vary depending on performance times, but is usually open Monday to Saturday: 10am to 6pm (10am to 8pm when there is a performance) and Sunday: 4pm to 8pm (when there is a performance).

The Pavilion Arts Centre box office is only open for one hour before an event.

There is no box office for the Studio Theatre or events outside our venues, so please book your tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased on the door, but we are unable to accept card payments.

For special events and festivals, the box office will usually be open half an hour before the performance for ticket collection and sales.

PAYMENT

All major credit cards are accepted and there is no additional fee for paying by credit or debit card. We accept National Theatre Tokens as well as our own Gift Vouchers.

DELIVERY OPTIONS

You are welcome to collect your tickets from the Box Office during normal opening hours, but if you prefer to have your tickets posted we charge a delivery fee of 85p which covers the ticket printing and postage cost. You can also print your tickets at home free of charge.

TICKET EXCHANGE

We cannot exchange tickets or money for a different event. Where there is more than one performance of an event we can exchange tickets where available. This requires a minimum of 48 hours notice and there is £1.50 administration fee for exchanging tickets.

LOST TICKETS

We can reprint tickets on the night of the performance at a cost of £1.50. Proof of ID will be required.

REFUNDS

We are unable to refund the cost of the tickets unless a show is cancelled. Postage charges are non–refundable.

RESERVATIONS

Reservations cannot be taken for events that are likely to sell out such as high profile music and comedy performances. Other reservations can only be held for seven days, but for very popular shows you will be asked to pay for your tickets in advance. If you book on the same day as the show, your tickets will be held until 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

CHANGES TO PROGRAMME

If a show is cancelled we will try to contact customers in advance. We publish any cancellation or unavoidable changes to performances on our website and social media.

ADMISSION

The management reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave our buildings at any time. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable point in the performance at the discretion of the management.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS

Occasionally we may need to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre to the Studio (or vice versa).

Numbered tickets may change to general admittance, in which case we are unable to offer refunds.

DISCOUNTS AND SPECIAL OFFERS

On many events we offer concessions to seniors, children, students, disabled customers, groups and customers in receipt of some benefits.

Offers are subject to availability and are not available in conjunction with any other offer or on previous ticket purchases. You may be asked to provide proof of eligibility. Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre reserves the right to withdraw the offer at any time.

• Senior: we class anyone aged 60 and over as a Senior concession.

• Children: we class anyone aged 15 and under as a child.

• Students: we class anyone in full-time education with an NUS card as a student.

• Groups: we class groups of eight or more people as a group (group size may vary depending on event).

Where available, we currently offer concessions for customers in receipt of Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment & Support Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance. Proof of eligibility is required.

Essential Companions If there are discounts available on a performance we can offer a free companion ticket to anyone in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or anyone accompanying an Access Card holder with the +1 symbol. Other essential companions and Derbyshire County Council Carers Emergency Card holders can still receive a 50% discount on full price tickets as long as there are discounts available on a performance. These companion tickets are only available if you are accompanying the person you are caring for and are subject to availability. Proof of eligibility required.

Standby Tickets Standby tickets are sometimes available to students age 16+ and anyone in receipt of JSA/ Income Support. The tickets are usually priced at £10 and are available one hour before the performance, subject to availability. Proof of eligibility required.

MATCHAM If you visit the theatre regularly, joining our Matcham Membership scheme will make sure you get the best seats at the best price. Benefits include: • Half price tickets to some ‘first night’ performances • Discounts on many shows

• Priority booking for some events

• Advance email notification about new shows • Reservations held until one week before a performance, or two weeks for very busy or sold out performances

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an accessible toilet. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system.

The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs

DANCING

We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments.

This works through a headset rather than your hearing aid, please reserve a headset through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices.

Dancing is not permitted in the Dress Circle, Upper Circle or Gallery areas, so if you would like to dance, please book Stalls seats. For your safety, no standing is allowed in the Upper Circle sides and boxes.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Assistance dogs are welcome.

You’re welcome to take photos of our beautiful theatre before and after the performance, however photography and filming is not allowed during the performance.

CHILDREN

RESTRICTED VIEW

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a small number of booster seats available on first come first served basis.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children.

Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown.

The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three years old. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old.

CONCESSIONS

A small number of seats on all levels of the theatre have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience, so when you book online, an information box appears over these seats to let you know that there may be a restricted or side view, if you would like more information please contact our Box Office before booking. When attending an opera, please note that surtitles may not be visible from some seats, again, please check with the Box Office before booking. Family tickets are not available on restricted view seats.

SMOKING Both Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre are no smoking buildings and e– cigarettes are not permitted.

REFRESHMENTS We have three bars in the Opera House: the Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle bars which are open for pre–show and interval drinks 45 minutes before each performance. You can

Buxton is easy to reach via the A6, A515 and A53. The theatre is well signposted from the town centre. There is free parking after 6pm on the upper level of the Pavilion Gardens car park (don’t use the downstairs car park as it closes early) or on some streets close to the theatre which are not covered by the Residents Parking Scheme. There is additional evening and weekend parking at St. Thomas More School, Palace Fields, Buxton SK17 6AF – please leave some money in the honesty Box! A train service is available from Manchester Piccadilly to Buxton. For more information on services and connections call 08457 484950.
