¡AYÚDENOS A PROTEGER EL PARQUE! CONAF permite la realización de actividades de recreación de bajo impacto, bajo ciertas reglas. Su no cumplimiento implica su expulsión inmediata del parque. Uso del fuego El uso de cualquier fuente de calor al interior del parque está prohibido por la Ley 20.653. El incumplimiento de esta norma podrá ser sancionado con multas de hasta $2.000.000 o hasta tres años de cárcel. Camping Se permite exclusivamente en las áreas habilitadas; está estrictamente prohibido pernoctar en cualquier otro lugar. Cocinar Solo está autorizado el uso de cocinillas que no usen material vegetal como combustible (tipo BioLite), exclusivamente en las áreas especialmente habilitadas de cada campamento o área de acampar. En cualquier otro lugar está prohibido y sancionado por la Ley 20.653. Basura: Debe llevarse del parque toda la basura que genere durante su visita.
PRECAUCIONES AL CONDUCIR
COMPORTAMIENTO EN SENDEROS
Los accidentes de tránsito son habituales en el parque. Muchas veces tienen complicaciones fatales, pues la ayuda puede tardar en llegar. Respete el límite de velocidad de 60 km/h y manténgase a la derecha del camino para evitar choques frontales en curvas. Esté atento a las condiciones del camino y del clima: el viento, el ripio suelto, la nieve y la escarcha son condiciones que pueden provocar accidentes con consecuencias fatales. Si visita el parque en vehículo, infórmese sobre nuestra normativa en el folleto para visitantes full day que le entregarán al pagar su entrada en nuestras porterías. Siga las indicaciones para que su visita sea agradable y segura.
Transite por los senderos del parque silenciosamente, para disfrutar los sonidos de la naturaleza. No está permitido reproducir música con altavoces ni correr en ellos. Tampoco debe caminar por ellos sin luz de día ni abandonar las rutas habilitadas. Si está cerca de fauna nativa, no se aproxime pues su presencia la perturba y puede dañarla. No toque a los animales y jamás los alimente. Mantenga a los niños siempre cerca de un adulto. Ayude a que lo natural siga siendo salvaje. Punta Arenas COMUNA PUNTA ARENAS País: Chile Región: Magallanes y Antártica Chilena Provincia: Magallanes Centro urbano situado a orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes, en la península de Brunswick, a 53º 08’ grados latitud sur y 70º 55’ grados longitud oeste. Punta Arenas es la capital de la región de Magallanes y a su vez capital de la Patagonia chilena, llamada antiguamente Punta Arenosa y “Sandy Point” por John Byron (en inglés), durante su recorrido por este pequeño y lejano paraje en el siglo XVII . Aquí puede realizar excursiones hacia los principales atractivos turísticos de la región. Los recursos son en su mayoría bellezas naturales que pueden ser visitadas por tierra, mar y aire. Existe una variada gama en la oferta de las agencias de viajes locales ya sean tours programados para grupos o servicios privados. Es posible recorrer gran parte de la región mediante los caminos visitando lugares como el Seno Otway, de gran atracción turística y científica, donde se ubica una colonia de pingüinos, o continuar por el camino hacia el sector de Río Verde y Seno Skyring ideal para los amantes de la pesca deportiva. Al recorrer los caminos regionales en general es posible observar una variada fauna, con aves como: el ñandú, el cóndor, el cisne y el flamenco. Magallanes es una zona rural de bellos paisajes que ofrece también agroturismo. Al sur de Punta Arenas la carretera baja el litoral central de la península de Brunswick en la ruta histórica por excelencia, por mar o por tierra pasaron alguna vez descubridores y conquistadores, indígenas, colonos y pioneros. It is the regional urban center, located beside Magellan’s Strait, in Brunswick peninsula, at 53º 08’ grades south latitude and 70º 55’ grades west longitude. Punta Arenas, capital of Magellan’s region and capital of the Chilean Patagonia, in the past was called Punta Arenosa, and in english it was called “Sandy Point” for John Byron, during his journey for this small and distant place in the XVII century. The city was founded in 1848, and it became the main axis of the commercial, cultural and social development of the whole magellanic territory. From here you can carry out trips towards the main tourist attractiveness of the region. Most of the regional resources consist of untamed beauty that you can visit by land, sea and air. Tour Huellas del Milodón CIRCUITO PREHISTÓRICO HISTORIA Y CULTURA DE LA CUEVA DEL MILODÓN
El nombre Cueva del Milodón se originó porque en el lugar se encontraron restos paleontológicos de un animal extinto hace varios milenios, que se denominó Milodón. También se descubrieron evidencias del primitivo hombre patagónico, cuya data aproximada bordea los 12.000 años de antigüedad. En cuanto al origen de la caverna propiamente tal, actualmente hay dos hipótesis que explican su formación: una dice que se debió a la erosión provocada sobre el conglomerado rocoso, por las olas de un enorme lago que habría invadido la cuenca de Natales, al producirse el retiro del hielo que la rellenaba durante la última era glacial cuaternaria de la Patagonia (aprox. 20.000 años atrás). La segunda hipótesis señala que se habría ido formando lentamente al disolverse el hielo y mediante la acción del agua, las sales y el viento en la roca formaron la cueva durante unos 100.000 años aproximadamente y que corresponden al periodo Cretácico. El interés científico data de 1896, cuando se produjo el hallazgo, de piel, huesos y otros restos de un animal extinto, un perezoso terrestre llamado MILODÓN (Mylodon Darwin J.). En 1902, el inglés Hesketh Prichard exploraró la Patagonia con la esperanza de encontrar un Milodón vivo. Actualmente hay una réplica de la figura del Milodón en fibra de vidrio en la entrada de la cueva. Esta caverna tiene 200 metros de profundidad y un promedio de 35 metros de ancho. Está localizada frente a un fiordo del Océano Pacífico, rodeada por bosques nativos y fauna regional. En el área hay otras cavernas de menor tamaño, algunas con estalactitas. En casi todas estas cavernas se han encontrado restos humanos de 12.390 años de antigüedad.
HISTORY AND CULTURE OF CUEVA DEL MILODON (MILODON CAVE)
Its name was originated because in its site were found some remains of an extinct paleontological animal several millennia ago, this animal was named Milodon. There was also discovered evidence of the primitive Patagonian man, from about 12,000 years ago. As for the origin of the cave itself, there are currently two hypotheses to explain its formation: one says that was due to erosion of the conglomerate rock, the waves of a huge lake that have invaded Natales basin , after the glacier ice that filled it receded during the last Patagonian glacial Quaternary (approx. 20,000 years ago). The second hypothesis states that could be originated slowly when the ice melted and through the action of the water, salts and the wind in carving the rock and forming the cave during about 100,000 years . The scientific interest dates from 1896 when a skin, bones and other remains of an extinct animal were discovered,a ground sloth called MILODÓN (MylodonDarwin J.). In 1902, the englishman Hesketh Prichard explored Patagonia with the hope of finding an alive Milodon. Currently there is a replica of the Milodn figure made of fiberglass at entrance of the cave. This cave is 200 meters deep and an average of 35 meters wide. It is located in front of a Pacific Ocean fiord, surrounded by native forests and fauna. There are other smaller caves in the area, some of them have stalactites. In most of these caves have been found human remains from 12,390 years old. The climate is dry, with 450 mm of rainfall per year, in autumn and spring rains and winter snows.

Torres del Paine COMUNA TORRES DEL PAINE País: Chile Región: Magallanes y Antártica Chilena Provincia: Última Esperanza Es una comuna de Chile, ubicada en la Provincia de Última Esperanza, Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena, cuya capital es la Villa Cerro Castillo. Tiene una superficie de 6.630 Km2 e incluye en ella el Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. Su población es de alrededor de 800 personas. Cuenta con una tenencia de Carabineros, una Escuela Pública, Complejo Fronterizo, una Posta de primeros auxilios, un aeródromo, un centro de atención al turista y museo. Villa Cerro Castillo tiene una ubicación favorablemente estratégica en cuanto se constituye como ruta hacia y desde el interior de Argentina, y representa en el ámbito comunal la concentración de todos los servicios básicos. Cuenta además con dos cafeterías, un Hostal y una Hostería. Dispone de dos salas de usos múltiples, un gimnasio nuevo, Biblioteca Pública y Telecentro con servicio de internet para uso de la Comunidad y Público en general. El Parque Nacional Torres del Paine está ubicado entre el macizo de la Cordillera de Los Andes y la Estepa Patagónica, en este hermoso y conocido paisaje, formado por granito moldeado por la fuerza del hielo de glaciar, viven diferentes especies como Ñandú, Lechuza, Puma, Chingue, Zorro y una rica flora, la cuál no puede dejar de fotografiar en su visita.

This is a County located in the Province of Ultima Esperanza, Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region. Its capital is Cerro Castillo Village. It has a superficies of 6.630 Km2, including Torres del Paine National Park. Its population is 800 people. It has a Police Station, a Public School, a Border Complex, a First Aids Post, a small airport, a Tourist Center and a Museum. Cerro Castillo Village has a favorable strategic location since it is a road to Argentina and it has all services. Besides, there are two coffee shops, one Hostal and and one Hosteria. It has two multi-use rooms, a new stadium, public library and a telecenter with internet service for all people. Torres del Paine National Park is located between The Andes and the Patagonian Steppe. In this beautiful and famous scenery made by granite shaped by the strengh of the glacier ice, there are different species such as Ñandu, Owl, Puma, Skunk, Fox and a varied flora that you cannot miss to make pictures of in your visit.

El nuevo Chile.
Hace unos días atrás, conocimos a través de los medios de comunicación, que en los Estados Unidos había sido premiado un equipo de 4 jóvenes chilenos, ellos son Algramo. Emprendimiento social, que nace a partir de la observación de un problema en el entorno de estos jóvenes universitarios y quienes en un inicio, se juntaron para resolverlo, sin pensar en la escalabilidad mundial que podría tener su idea. Esta innovación, busca que las personas en los barrios, puedan volver a comprar al gramo los alimentos básicos (arroz, azúcar, porotos), como una manera de mitigar las necesidades de los sectores con mayores necesidades del país, pero además mejorando la competitividad de los almaceneros, ya que los precios son mejores y finalmente, siendo amigables con el medioambiente, ya que los envases son reutilizables, por eso pregonan que “Algramo impacta en 3 esferas: las personas con escasos recursos, el almacenero - distribuidores y el medioambiente”. Es interesante comenzar a reconocer, como nuestro país ha sufrido transformaciones y

en este Nuevo Chile, encontramos jóvenes más solidarios, preocupados de su comunidad y con ganas de aportar a su población, ciudad, región o país. Quienes por ejemplo, cuando se salió el Río de Las Minas, tomó la pala y salió a ayudar o con ejemplos como los de Algramo, donde jóvenes emprenden pero resolviendo problemas reales que encontramos aún en la sociedad. Estas situaciones nos vislumbran un futuro provisorio… Comencemos a dejar el individualismo a un lado y ojalá estos ejemplos logren inspirar a otros, a seguir creyendo en nuestro país y en nuestra región, en donde la palabra Colaboración, será fundamental para seguir avanzando para tener una región más próspera. La invitación está hecha, solo depende del legado que desees dejar en tu Vida.

ar, beans), as a way of mitigating the needs of the areas with major necessities in the country, but also improving the competitiveness in the grocery stores, because prices are better and finally, being friendly with the environment, so the packages are recyclable. That is why it is said that Algramo impacts in 3 spheres: people with low economical resources, the owner of the grocery store and distributors, and the environment”. It is interesting to start recognizing how our country has suffered many transformations and in this new Chile, we find young people who are more solidary, worried about their community and full of desires to help in their neighbourhood, city or country. For instance, those who took the shovel and went to help when Las Minas River flooded, or with examples such as the Algramos’s, where young people undertake solving real problems that we still find in the society. These situations become clear in a provisory future…Let’s start to leave aside the individualism and we hope these examples gain to inspire others, go on believing in our country and our region, where the word Cooperation will be fundamental to continue advancing to have a more prosperous region. The invitation still stands; it only depends on the legacy you want to leave in your life.

LA LECCIÓN DEL PINGÜINO De todas las veces que me he encontrado en la Antártica mi curiosidad y que me llama la atención y no solo a mi sino a todo el mundo y en especial a los niños han sido los Pingüinos y curiosamente en mi primer viaje hacia el continente helado fue desde la latitud 53° Sur (Punta Arenas) hasta la Latitud muy cercana al Polo Sur los 83° Sur, en el Glaciar Branscomb, al pie del Monte Vinson, y allí quedo en primera instancia mi frustración por ver pingüinos antárticos ya que en esas zonas y por la época no existe vida alguna que se le asemeje. Posteriormente, si he tenido el privilegio de ver la gran mayoría de sus especies en sus hábitat correspondientes, asi he visto los Papuas, los Barbijos, Los Adelias, Los Emperadores, etc. La manera que los he visto en plenos periodos reproductivos
y de como crian y cuidan a sus polluelos, también la pregunta de todos del por qué no vuelan y que les ha pasado en términos evolutivos han sido de mis inquietudes y lecturas para conseguir una respuesta. Pero como esta sección de “El Viajero” esta centrada en encontrar evidencias mitológicas y leyendas populares de las aves, en mis investigaciones encontré la siguiente leyenda del Pingüino: Cuenta un viejo chamán que conocimos en uno de nuestros viajes, y que nos envolvió en un halo de magia, relatando fascinantes historias ocurridas en el gran inicio, cuando todo empezó. Una de esas historias nos cuenta que el pingüino era una de las aves más hermosas y preferidas por los dioses que habitaban el sur de América. En ese entonces, el pingüino era

distinto de cómo lo conocemos ahora. Era un ave magnífica que al surcar el cielo alcanzaba una gran altura y velocidad. Su gracia y belleza hacían que los dioses detuvieran el tiempo para disfrutar de sus vuelos y sus piruetas. Su majestuosidad era indiscutible y todas las aves soñaban parecerse a él. Pero los dioses, que ven más allá de lo que los humanos ven, comenzaron a observar que en el interior del pingüino, una sombra comenzaba a crecer. La majestuosidad del vuelo había convertido al pingüino en un ser arrogante que despreciaba a quienes no tenían sus habilidades y en particular a los peces que le servían de alimento. Volaba con orgullo pero altanero y soberbio, hasta burlándose de las habilidades de sus pares. Pronto su desprecio se convirtió en maltrato con esos pequeños seres a los que consideraba seres muy inferiores a él. Los peces aun sabiendo que eran alimento para el Pingüino, temían mucho sus arremetidas al mar de manera prodigiosa pero con mal termino muchas veces, disfrutaba de zambullirse con fuerza en el mar para asustarlos o arremetía a picotazos contra ellos, no para saciar su hambre, simplemente encontraba placer en matarlos y verlos flotando inermes en el mar. Y como Dios, lo ve todo y sabía lo que estaba haciendo, decidió darle una lección de vida ante sus comportamientos que escapaban a la armonía de la naturaleza, enseñándole humildad a nuestros amigos Los Pingüinos de todas los tipos y especies. Le privó de aquello que tanto lo enorgullecía; le quitó la capacidad de volar. Y así ocurrió que sus magníficas alas se fueron acortando, su cuerpo gano volumen y mucho peso y siendo así le fue imposible volver a volar jamás. Con mucha humildad tuvo que aprender a nadar si quería sobrevivir, al igual que los peces, a quienes antaño despreció. Su vida cambió totalmente. Abandonó sus nidos en los árboles, comenzó a buscar cobijo en huecos subterráneos, y por si esto fuera poco, soportar a vivir en aguas congeladas. Desde entonces, el pingüino se volvió más calmado, y junto a su compañera, que ahora elige para toda la vida, aprendió a nadar con tanta gracia como si fuera un pez. El hombre viéndolos así, les bautizó con el nombre de pájaro bobo, pero a él no le importó, aprendió a ser feliz, aprendió la lección que les infligió Dios. Así ahora viven en grandes comunidades, preocupados de proteger a sus crías, alimentarlas y enseñarles de alguna manera las habilidades del vuelo pero en condiciones acuáticas, logrando ser uno de los mas y mejores nadadores en velocidad y en piruetas bajo el agua. Observar a los pingüinos bajo el agua es una experiencia extraordinaria porque por lo visto la lección fue asumida pero la habilidad de “volar” no la perdió, y así se encumbra como uno de los mejores exponentes del nado bajo el agua, tal cual su permanencia prolongada bajo el agua que también es extraordinaria. “Y según dice la leyenda se transformaron en un ejemplo de fidelidad, protección y disciplinado ser de los territorios helados de la Antártica, porque cuando uno de ellos muere sea el macho o la hembra, su pareja se interna en el mar y nunca más regresa.”

THE PENGUIN’S LESSON Among all times I have been in Antarctica, what gets my attention is Penguins; and not only to me, but also to all, especially to children. Curiously, my first trip to the cold continent was from Latitude 53° South (Punta Arenas) to a very close latitude to the South Pole, Latitude 83° South, in Glacier Branscomb, at the foot of Mount Vinson; and there I got frustrated because I didn’t see Antarctic penguins. In that area and in that time of the year, there is no life that is similar to it. Later, I have had the privilege to see most of the species of penguins in its corresponding habitats; so, I have seen Gentoo, Chinstrap, Adelia, Emperor, etc. Some of my questions and readings to obtain an answer have been the way in what I have seen them in the reproduction periods, the way they breed and take care of the babies, why they don’t fly and what has happened to them in evolutionary terms. However, as this section of El Viajero” Magazine is focused on finding mythological evidences and popular legends of birds; in my investigations I found the following legend of Penguins. “An old chaman that we met in one of our trips and that packed us in a halo of magic told us fascinating stories that happened in the great beginning, when everything started. One of those stories tells us that the penguin was one of the most beautiful birds and preferred by the Gods that lived in the South of America. In that time, the penguin was different to the one that we know nowadays. It was a magnificent bird that when it flew in the sky it reached a great altitude and speed. Its grace and beauty made that Gods stopped the time to enjoy of its flights and its pirouettes. Its majesty was undeniable and all birds dreamed about being similar to them. But Gods, who see beyond what humans see, they started to observe that in the inner part of the penguin, a shadow started to grow. The majesty of the flight had transformed the penguin in an arrogant being that looked down on everybody that didn’t have its skills and El Viajero / 30

particularly to those fishes feeding them. It flew proudly but haughty and arrogant, even teasing of the skills of their pairs. Soon, its snub became maltreatment with those small beings that it considered to be very inferior. The fish, even knowing that they were the food for the Penguin, they were scared of the prodigious charges to the sea, although many times they had a bad ending. Many times, he enjoyed diving strongly in the sea just to scare them or he attacked them with stings, not to eat them, just because he felt pleasure killing them and see them floating unarmed in the sea. And as God sees everything and knew what he was doing; he decided to give him a lesson of life as a consequence of his behaviors that escaped to the harmony of nature, teaching what humbleness is to our friends the Penguins of all types and species. He took off all what made him to be proud of; he took off the capacity to fly. And it was so, its magnificent wings became shorter, its body got more volume and lot of weight, so it was impossible for him to fly again. He had to be very humble and learn how to swim if he wanted to survive, same as fishes, those that he had looked down in the past. His life changed completely. Since then, the penguin became more quiet and together with its companion, that now it choses for his whole life, he learned how to swim as gracefully as he was a fish. The man, as he saw them like that, baptized them as pajaro bobo, but he didn’t care about it; he learned how to be happy and learned the lesson given by God. Thus, they now live in big groups worried about protecting their babies, feeding them and teaching them somehow the skills of the flight but in aquatic conditions, becoming one of the best and faster swimmers and the best in doing pirouettes under the water. Observing penguins under the water is an extraordinary experience because, so it seems that the lesson was took over but he didn’t lose his skill to ”fly”, and so, it is one of the best representative of the swimming under the water, as well as his prolonged permanence under the water which is extraordinary, too. “And according to what the legend says, they became an example of faithfulness, protection and a being that puts the discipline of the cold territories of Antarctica; because when one of them dies, no matter if it is the male or the female, its couple gets into the ocean and it never returns again”. GLACIAR SCHIAPARELLI Cordillera Darwin - Tierra del Fuego Profesor Alfredo Soto Ortega
Esta vez nos dirigimos a un territorio poco explorado pero donde se han desarrollado esporádicamente eventos de exploración y logro de objetivos importantes, en esta ocasión acompañando a exploradores científicos, navegantes y montañistas. Un grueso grupo nos dirigimos hacia la Cordillera Darwin. Esta zona cumple con los requisitos para desarrollar actividades en un nuevo concepto como lo es un Laboratorio Natural. Tuvimos que prepararnos para navegar 80 kilómetros desde la caleta de pescadores de Bahía Mansa cruzando el majestuoso y rebelde Estrecho de Magallanes. Navegamos en un yate motor llamado “Arco Iris” al mando de su capitán Gonzalo Campos, nuestro objetivo aproximarnos a Tierra del Fuego, en las inmediaciones Norponiente del Monte Sarmiento donde ya se encontraba un equipo de escaladores con el propósito de ascender el Monte Sarmiento en un ambiente netamente invernal. Camilo Rada y su equipo, con experiencias ya comprobadas de este tipo de desafíos invernales estaban ya en sus paredes trabajando tras esta significativa y mundial cumbre montañosa. ...”El Glaciar Schiaparelli es el mas grande que se descuelga del macizo del Monte Sarmiento, con 7 kilómetros de largo y otros 200 metros en su ancho cubriendo unos 24,78 kilómetros cuadrados y de gran interés para la ciencia que busca información del clima del pasado ya que su frente fundamentalmente puede entregar esta información desde sus morrenas actuales que indicarían sus relativos o constantes avances y retrocesos a través del tiempo. Lo que hace interesante toda esta zona es que del punto de vista de la ciencia glaciológica es una zona totalmente nueva para su estudio lo que la hace mas atractiva. Nuestros aportes de exploración y acompañando a connotados científicos le dan un tinte especial por considerarnos los primeros exploradores con estas metas.” Así navegando desde la amanecida helada de agosto del 2013 nos fuimos internando en maravillosos parajes y colores determinados por las primeras luces del día. Nos acompaña la luna y un cielo totalmente despejado que nos permitía ver una montaña lejana que al pasar las horas del vaivén de las olas del canal se nos acercaba en toda su magnitud, hasta llegar a las Playas de la costa denominada Playa de Bardonecchia en donde instalaríamos nuestro campamento Base.
Por mucho tiempo se dijo que en Chile existían 2000 glaciares, pero en los últimos años y con el esfuerzo de muchas personas e instituciones entendidos en el tema se logro determinar que en Chile actualmente existen mas de 20.000 glaciares, cubriendo un superficie total si los reuniéramos todos en una sola pieza del orden de los 22.000 kilómetros cuadrados, y esta gran cantidad de hielo fuera de los ya conocidos antárticos, están concentrados en la zona Austral, considerando sus Campos de Hielos como el Patagónico Norte y el Patagónico Sur, mas los Glaciares que conforman pequeños campos nevados y el de la Cordillera Darwin en Tierra del Fuego. Esta expedición con matices multidisciplinarios lo conforman investigadores, deportistas, navegantes, logísticos, profesores y estudiantes mas un equipo de televisión los que estarían confeccionando un documental para registro de esta actividad mancomunada en los esfuerzos de varias personas. Las actividades científicas esta centradas en estudios de glaciología y de paleoclima. Nuestra primera misión en el lugar fue instalar el campamento, buscar los mejores lugares para establecer las carpas dormitorios, cada equipo lo hacia de manera minuciosa porque el lugar de una selva impenetrable no daba muchos espacios, algunos riachuelo que pasan y cortaban las plataformas planas no era de mucho fiarse para poder acampar seguros, cómodos y temperados que es lo que mas se requiere en este tipo de actividades sobre todo en condiciones invernales. Por mi parte me hago acompañar de dos estudiantes del Magíster de Ciencias Antárticas de la Universidad de Magallanes, como es el caso del estudiante español Eñaut Izaguirre y la Bióloga Pamela Soto, ambos bajo mi tutela… yo como profesor y explorador asistiendo en lo que se requiere en estos fines a los investigadores que se encuentra ya instalados. Ya ubicados, nos aprestamos y porque la hora así lo permite a estirar las piernas y hacer una excursión cercana del campamento pero buscando altura para encontrar la mejor aproximación hacia el Glaciar Schiaparelli. Esta excursión invita a todos ansiosos de conocer el sector, que se encontraba muy quieto, sin viento un sol alto invernal… pero si mucho frío. Ganamos los primeros metros a través de un sendero establecido y desde el peñón de un cerro menor siempre en las faldas del Monte Sarmiento, sacamos

conclusiones visuales y con el apoyo de una fotografía satelital, discutiendo cuales serian las mejores zonas para aproximarse al Glaciar. De vuelta en el campamento pudimos ver lo organizado del refugio en donde nos concentraba una fogata que había que estar avivando constantemente ya que debido a la humedad era muy difícil mantenerla viva para su propósito, la cena contundente y los infaltable mates. Las conversaciones finales fueron detalladas por el Jefe de expedición entes caso era el Dr. Juan Carlos Aravena, la hora de salida hacia la exploración de búsqueda para el mejor ingreso al Glaciar. Los equipos de Hielo preparados y se sabía que habrían dos equipos de personas trabajando en temas netamente glaciológicos y otro relacionado con la dendrología, es decir, el estudio de los arboles del sector, principalmente hurguetear por el interior de ellos y sus anillos que entregarían informaciones propias de su comportamiento en el pasado referente al clima que lo cubrió. Al día siguiente, con Eñaut muy temprano nos equipamos y tomamos un contundente desayuno, llevando nuestras raciones para pensar en estar todo el día en la zona. En primera instancia, vemos que el resto de los componentes de la expedición al Hielo estaban un poco retrasados, por lo tanto con Eñaut decidimos tomar los equipos que había que trasladar y procedemos a salir como equipo de avanzada… el día espectacular… tranquilo también… desde el mirador del día anterior dominábamos gran parte del Glaciar… y con el desborde en su frente de la Laguna Azul. Mantenemos contacto radial con el equipo mas retrasado con algunas dificultades en que sea clara y fuerte pero en fin podíamos ir dando nuestra posición. Nos decidimos con Eñaut a descender desde el mirador y enfilando directo a nuevas posiciones desde las morrenas laterales para aproximarnos y encontrar la vía directa para subirse al glaciar y así asegurar el trabajo de los próximos días que fundamentalmente consistía en instalar en algún lugar que sea óptimo para una estación meteorológica la que a través del tiempo podría entregar información de los detalles ocurrentes de la dinámica del glaciar en su perdida o aumento según el caso de su masa glaciar. En principio y metidos en un bosque que la nieve fundida nos engañaba para encontrarnos de vez en cuando con algunos fosos en que nos dificultaba el desplazamiento permanente, de pronto nos separamos para después reunirnos con la información adecuada, desde este punto tenemos dificultades para comunicarnos con el Campo Base, solo nos responden algunas señales de banda marina quienes nos solicitan dejar la frecuencia libre, pedimos disculpas y continuamos en nuestra ex-
ploración hasta que por dificultosas terrazas logramos llegar de un paso desde la morrena al Glaciar, lo tenemos conquistado en el ingreso. Aún así evaluamos que debiéramos optimizar ya que estamos en la morrena lateral Sur del Glaciar y buscar una conexión vía morrena hacia El Lago Azul. Eñaut un joven geógrafo con el que desde sus inicios de estudios en el Magister Antártico se puso en contacto conmigo para solicitarme integrarse a mis programas con estudiantes en salidas a terreno. Entre hermosos y sinuosos requeríos ondulantes por las morrenas naturales vamos avanzando y con la dificultad de estar incomunicados con el campo Base y también que este trayecto se estaba haciendo dificultoso y muy largo para llegar a la laguna azul….desde allí seguir la línea de costa del Lago, la desembocadura del río y estaríamos por el campamento Base. Ante la complejidad del lugar buscando los mejores espacios para descender… por un lado mas cerca del Glaciar las caídas eran muy abruptas, por el lado del bosque igual de abruptas las bajadas pero con el factor que nos podíamos frenar entre los arboles para no seguir en cada franca por la ladera en caso de tropezar. En algún momento de nuestra frenética búsqueda junto a Eñaut….tomamos la decisión de bajar casi por las copas de los árboles y usando prácticamente toda nuestra fuerza en brazos y piernas para poder descender con seguridad, el motivo de nuestra urgencia es que se nos viene acercando la noche y allí entraríamos en un problema mayor. Finalmente ayudados por la inercia de la pendiente logramos alcanzar las orillas del Lago Azul y continuamos por su costa congelada, el Sol se nos escapa del entorno y el ambiente se coloca mucho mas helado. Con linternas frontales seguimos la silueta del lago y posteriormente retomamos el río que lo conecta al mar hasta llegar a orillas de la costa de la Playa mencionada anteriormente. Nuestros compañeros estaban preocupados por no tener la comunicación correspondiente y en un improvisado “banquillo de juicios” fuimos interrogados por nuestros compañeros que querían manifestar su molestia por nuestra extensa y solitaria excursión. A lo que después de dar las explicaciones de la situación y decisiones que tomamos, entendieron que habíamos logrado el objetivo fundamental para las próximas actividades a desarrollar en el área misma del Glaciar. Descartando así definitivamente la posibilidad de la aproximación por el Lago Azul, y si la ruta desde el Peñón y mirador hacia una vía directa que nos llevaría al Glaciar mismo y así contribuir a que las labores del equipo “Hielo” sean mas efectivas en cuanto a ocupar los tiempos adecuados y seguros para la instalación de una estación meteorológica. SCHIAPARELLI GLACIER Darwin Mountain Range - Tierra del Fuego Professor Alfredo Soto Ortega
This time we go to a territory that has been hardly explored but where once in a while, there have been events of exploration and the achievement of important objectives. We went with explorers, scientists, sailors and mountaineers. A big group went to the Darwin Mountain Range. This zone complies with the requirements to develop activities in a new concept as a Natural Lab. We had to get prepared to navigate 80 kilometres from the fishing cove Mansa Bay crossing the majestic and rebel Magellan Strait. We sailed in a motor yacht called “Arco Iris” under the command of its Captain Gonzalo Campos; our objective was to approach to Tierra del Fuego Island, in the Northwest surroundings of Mount Sarmiento, where there was already a team of climbers with the purpose to climb the Mount Sarmiento in a proper winter environment. Camilo Rada and his team, with experiences already tested for this type of winter challenge, they were already working in their walls following this meaningful and worldwide mountain top. ...”The Schiaparelli Glacier is the biggest one hanging from the massif of Mount Sarmiento, having 7 kilometres long and other 200 metres wide covering about 24,78 square kilometres and of great interest for the science that looks for information about the weather in the past because its front can mainly provide this information since its former moraine that would indicate its relative or constant progressions and setbacks through the time. What makes this zone interesting is that from the point of view of the glaciological science it is a totally new area to study it, so that makes it more attractive. Our collaboration for exploration and going together with renowned scientists provide a special touch to consider us the first explorers with these objectives. So, sailing from the cold dawn of August 2013, we went getting into wonderful spots and colours determined by the first lights of the day. The moon is coming with us, and the sky that is totally clear, allowed us to see a far mountain that as we went through the swinging of the waves of the cannel it became closer in all its magnitude to get to the beaches of the coast called Bardonecchia Beach, where we were going to install our Base Camp.
For a long time, it was said that in Chile there were 2000 glaciers, but in the last years and with the effort of many people and institutions that understand This issue, it was determined that in Chile there are more than 20.000 glaciers, covering a total superficies of about 22.000 square kilometres. And this great amount of ice, besides the so known Antarctic ices, are concentrated in the Austral zone, considering its Ice Fields as the Patagonico Norte and the Patagonico Sur, plus the Glaciers that form small snowed fields and the one in the Darwin Mountain Range in Tierra del Fuego Island. This expedition with multidisciplinary hints formed by investigators, sportsmen, sailors, logistic-expert men, teachers and students, plus a TV channel team, who would create a documental to record This activity summarizing the efforts of many people. The scientific activities are focused on studies of glaciology and paleoclimate. Our first mission in the place was to install the campsite, look for the best places to establish the room tents. Each team was doing this in a very meticulous way because the place of an impenetrable forest didn’t offer so many spaces, some passing streams cutting the flat platforms were not so safe to camp comfortable and warm; which is what we most need in this type of activity, mainly under winter conditions. By my side, I go with two students of the Magiser in Antarctic Sciences of the University of Magallanes, the Spanish student Eñaut Izaguirre and the Biologist Pamela Soto, both under my responsibility… I go as a teacher and explorer supporting in what is requested for these purposes to the investigators who are already installed. Already installed, we got ready because it was a good time to stretch our legs and make and excursion in an area close to the campsite but looking for a place in altitude to find the best approach to the Schiaparelli Glacier. This excursion invites everybody who was anxious to know the place that was very quiet, without wind and a high winter sun… but very cold. We walked the first meters on an established trail and from the crag of a small hill, following the sides of the Mount Sarmiento, we got visual conclusions and we also had the support of satellite photography, discussing which would be the best areas to get closer to the Glacier.

Once back to the campsite, we could see that it was so organized and we gathered around a campfire that we had to feed constantly because it was very difficult to have it on due to the humidity. We had an abundant dinner and the famous mates. The final conversations were detailed by the Chief of the expedition Dr. Juan Carlos Aravena. The time to departure for our exploration in the search for the best way to access the Glacier. The Ice teams were ready and we knew there were two teams working in subjects that were purely glaciological and other related with dendrology, that is to say, the study of the trees of the area, mainly the investigation inside the trees and its rings that would provide information proper to its behavior in the past referred to the climate that covered it. The next day, Eñaut and I took our equipment very early, had an abundant breakfast, and took our food considering being out the whole day. At first e saw that the rest of the people who were part of the group, were a bit delayed, so we decided to take the equipment to be moved and we went as advance party…the day was spectacular…quiet also… from the viewpoint we could see a big part of the Glacier…and having in front of it the overflow of the Azul Lake. We kept radial contact with the team with some difficulties but we could inform what our location was. Eñaut and I decided to go down from the viewpoint and go directly to new positions from the side moraines to get closer and find a direct way to climb into the glacier and so, assure the work of the following days. This would consist of installing a meteorological station in a place that is optimal. As the time passed, this station could provide information about the occurring details of the dynamics of the glacier in its loss or increase according to the case of its glacier mass. At the beginning and in the middle of a forest where the melted snow confused us to find some trenches once in a while, that made difficult our permanent progression; we decided to get separated to meet again with the adequate information. From This point, we had problems to get in touch with the Base Camp and we only get the answers of some marine bands signals requesting us to leave the frequency free; so, we apologize and go on in our exploration. At last, going through very difficult terraces, we went from the moraine to the glacier, we conquered it from the access. Even so, we evaluated that we
should optimize everything due that we were in the South side glacier moraine of the Glacier and we should look for a connection through the moraine to the Azul Lake. Eñaut was a young geographer that since the beginning of his studies he got in touch with me to ask me to be part of my programs with the students whenever we had expeditions. We go on Among beautiful and sinuous waving rocks on the natural moraines and with the difficulty to be uncommunicated with the Base Camp, This part of the road was becoming more difficult and very long to get to Azul Lake…, from there, we had to go on the coastline of the lake, the mouth of the river and then, we would be in the Base Camp. Facing the complexity of the place looking for the best places to go down…on one side closer to the Glacier, the falls were very steep, and on the forest side, the ways down were also very steep but we had the advantage that we could stop among the trees so as not to go on falling straight on the hillside in case of any tumble. In any moment of our frenetic search, together with Eñaut, we took the decision to go down almost through the crowns of the trees and using practically all our strength or our arms and legs to go down safely. The reason for our urgency was that the night was closer and then, we would have a major problem. Finally, helped by the inertia of the pending, we could reach the edge of the Azul Lake and we went on its frozen coast. The sun escapes from the surroundings and the environment becomes much colder. With front lanterns we followed the silhouette of the lake and later, we took the river that connects with the sea to get to the edge of the coast of the beach previously mentioned. Our companions were worried because we didn’t have the right communication and in an improvised “to be in the dock”, we were questioned by our companions who wanted to express their annoyance due to our extensive and lonely excursion. So, after explaining the situation and the decisions we had taken, they understood that we had got the fundamental objective for the following activities to be developed in the area of the Glacier. So, we definitely dismissed the possibility of the approach by the Azul Lake and we considered the route from the crag and the viewpoint to a direct route that would take us to the Glacier itself and so, contribute with the “Ice” team to do a more effective work in terms of taking the adequate and safe times for the installation of a meteorological station. NEW ROUTE: EL CALAFATE
Having the biggest presence in the routes of the Chilean-Argentinean Patagonia is one of our greatest wishes. We have got with a lot of emotion the new to re-take the travel service to EL CALAFATE, a city located in Argentina, which is highly visited by national and foreign tourists. We know we share a strong link of touristic exchange with our brother country, and due this, we opened the route from Puerto Natales to El Calafate, with connections from Punta Arenas. We will keep daily frequencies in the high season. This will allow us to increase the international route and bring the visitors to this fascinating touristic city and contemplate the most beautiful touristic parks in the confine of the world.
