Latest Mining Strategy Takes Business into the Future

With a presence in over 60 countries around the world, FLSmidth (FLS) is a full flowsheet technology and service supplier to the global mining industry.

Recently, the business has established its CORE’26 mining strategy designed to ensure the future of mining in a sustainably focused world.

“Our mining strategy provides a clear path to build on our core strengths to become an even stronger player in the mining market, improve our profitability, and ensure the best support to our customers,”shared Venkatesan Punniyamurthy, Head of Capital Sales for Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and South Asia.

CORE’26 focuses on four key pillars: sustainability, service, technology, and performance.

Whilst all pillars ultimately feed into becoming a more sustainable business within the mining sector, its sustainability focus area aims to build a better future for FLS’s employees, as well as wider society and the planet.

“We will achieve this by accelerating our MissionZero ambition and through achieving our ESG targets,” explained Venkatesan.

Amongst the measures FLS is implementing for itself and its customers is water management, something particularly crucial for the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa, where water scarcity is prevalent.

Amongst its innovative solutions, FLS coarseAIR™ and REFLUX™ Flotation Cell (RFC™) enable users to significantly reduce energy consumption, less footprint and more metal recoveries.

Meanwhile, FLS’s unique solution of dry and wet grinding combination in iron ore processing allows the customers in the Middle East to reduce large amounts of process water wastage.

With the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia establishing industries outside of oil and gas, Venkatesan sees fantastic opportunities for FLS within the region.

As part of FLS’s growth strategy, it will look to implement more sales and service resources in the area to support the burgeoning mining industry within the Middle East.

integrated steel plants in the region. It is the only mill in the GCC to have a Vacuum Degassing facility that enables the business to produce a wide range of steel grades.

Today, the company has cemented its status as a pioneer in sustainability within the global steel industry through its steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and the fight against climate change. Committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045, JSIS has demonstrated remarkable progress in reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions intensity (Scope 1 and 2). Originally aiming for a 12.1% reduction by 2024–25, JSIS exceeded expectations by achieving a remarkable 32% reduction in 2022. With a Product Carbon Footprint Intensity of 0.78 tons of CO2 per ton of steel (Scope 1 and 2 emissions), JSIS has not only met stringent European standards but has also become one of the few companies in the GCC region to achieve this milestone.

JSIS has garnered acclaim for its ecoconscious steelmaking practices, boasting a Midrex-designed natural gas-powered facility renowned for its exceptional gas and electrode efficiency, ranking among the global leaders in this regard. With its unique ‘Hotlink’ DRI plant, featuring the region’s tallest DRI tower standing at 145 meters, and a cutting-edge Danieli-equipped steelmaking plant, JSIS continues to earn recognition for its environmentally sustainable approach to steel production.

Moreover, JSIS stands out for its adoption of innovative technologies such as integration of artificial intelligence in the EAF, and implementation of a robotic marking system for its finished products which enhances traceability in the quality management. These advancements underscore JSIS’s commitment to efficiency, quality, and environmental responsibility in the steel industry.

“Using DRI-NG-EAF technology enables us to transition to DRI- Green hydrogenEAF in the near future.” explained Harssha.

Being a port based plant with its own Jetty ensures seamless connectivity to the global markets. In addition to ground transport through the Muscat-–Dubai highway, and a dedicated 600-metre jetty, soon the port will also be connected to the UAE via rail which will make JSIS SOhar location a magnet for downstream units who can process primary steel to produce value added products.

Achieving $1.57 billion in revenue in 2023, JSIS has seen year-on-year double-digit growth for the last 14 years.

Now, in line with the Sultanate of Oman Vision 2040, JSIS is partnering with the government towards building a resilient non-oil based economy. Currently contributing 1.7% of the country’s GDP (and 17% of Oman’s non-oil GDP), JSIS is taking strategic steps towards its goal of increasing this to 3%.

“Steel builds nations, and for Oman it’s a catalyst towards achieving Oman 2040 Vision,” shared Harssha.

Part of this development includes the expansion of its facilities to include an additional steel mill and a Flat rolling mill, with a target to produce Six million tonnes of steel per annum in Sohar.

Green Shoots

By adopting advanced technologies in its production processes and being on the forefront of Operational effeciencies JSIS produces some of the lowest carbon footprint steels, emitting less than 1.5 tonnes ( scope 1,2,3) of CO2 per tonne of steel. This is significantly lower — compared to the industry average, which emits 2.3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel. We have recently launched Wire rods and Rounds with carbon footprint of less than 0.9 tonnes co2/tonne steel on primary clean steel grades. We are not waiting for 2030 to decarbonize, mother earth needs all of us to decarbonize NOW.

Cultivating an environment of safety and wellbeing, JSIS has garnered respect for the business from its employees, with an increase in the engagement score from 77% (April 2023) to 82% (November 2023).

“This recognition reflects our collective effort in establishing a thriving ecosystem at JSIS, where employee well-being, trust, pride, and enjoyment are paramount,” shared Harssha.

Aligned with Oman Vision 2040, JSIS recognises the importance of people, both internally to the business and in the regions in which it works.

Prospering with the Nation

JSIS takes its role as a good corporate citizen seriously and has adopted a strategic approach to social sustainability. With a focus on youth and sports, the steel maker has made long-term investments in sports development centres across OMAN for football in association with Oman Football association. Also, JSIS is working on plans to build Youth Skills training centres to make globally competent professionals from the young and enthusiastic Local Omani youth pool. “About 64% of Oman’s population is under 29 years old, so we have a fantastic opportunity to develop Youth with nerves of steel,” said Harssha.

Steel and Youth builds Nations, and Jindal Shadeed is a key partner to the government in building Steel and Youth for a strong and a great nation. www.jindalshadeed.com
