Today, with increased digitalization and the advent

of modern technologies such as IoT, AI, blockchain, cloud services, threats like phishing, ransomware, IoT-based attacks, zero-day exploits, DDOS attacks, and cyber terrorism are also increasing and making almost every aspect of the digital world vulnerable. Cybersecurity plays a critical role in protecting data privacy and brand reputation as well as addressing the regulatory and compliance needs for all business sectors. Anticipating the intensifying need for software, network, and cloud security, Kishor Sonawane (CEO of Infoshare Systems, Inc) founded Varutra Consulting in 2013.

He always had the thirst for innovating new things and wanted to run a company on his own. Thus, identifying the plethora of opportunities, and mainly his passion for information security, he decided to step into the cybersecurity landscape. Working with a couple of startups in the cybersecurity industry was a big learning for Kishor as he understood the importance of resource optimization, productivity, and quality consciousness. Consequently, with the successful execution and delivery in the given capacity of his roles during his career accompanied by more than 15 years of experience, he decided to pursue his dream and established Varutra Consulting.

In conversation with Kishor Sonawane, we will understand how he has transformed information security, especially in times of crisis. Here are the snippets,

Please share your entrepreneurial journey

As an entrepreneur, it was indeed not an easy but surely quite exciting and equally enjoyable journey for me. Since its inception, Varutra constantly received acquisition offers from several companies including the Big 4. However, I kept marching ahead till Varutra was acquired by Infoshare Systems Inc., USA, in 2018. The acquisition made Varutra part of a larger organization having a presence in the US as well as other regions of India. Presently, I manage the

responsibility of the CEO at Infoshare Systems Inc, USA.

What are the leading-edge services currently Infoshare Systems offers?

Alongside cybersecurity and assurance services, Infoshare Systems provides industry-best and highly commendable services along multiple business verticals. The company also provides IT Services, Strategic Consulting, Big Data Solutions, Web and Mobile Applications Development, IT Security Services, Audit & Compliance, and Professional QA & Staffing Services. It also develops Artificial Intelligence integrated products in Healthcare and IT Security domains. Furthermore, with upcoming cyber breaches and vulnerabilities in the digital world during the pandemic, Infoshare Systems launched the Cyber Threat Post (CTP) to spread awareness about the upcoming threats and attacks along with recommendations to patch them. It also helped a few of its clients in securely setting up their own enterprise solutions for the COVID-19 situation, knowing the critical importance of security in terms of data privacy. We also delivered multiple Information Security Awareness sessions to our clients and their employees and helped them being secure during the pandemic where attackers are targeting the digital world. Under my auspices, both—Varutra and Infoshare, have received numerous awards and recognitions and have emerged as successful organizations.

How have you managed to turn ideas into reality?

Speaking about turning dreams into reality, I am passionate about working smartly with innovative ideas and bringing them into reality. Under my leadership in Varutra, there were several products developed like MASTS- Mobile Application Security Testing Suite, MVD-Mobile Vulnerability Database, OWASP KALP, and MSSP Dashboard. Alongside ideas, I believe business ethics, quality work, adopting research-oriented & innovative approaches, commitment, and a good team following the culture are have been the ingredients for Infoshare's success. I feel grateful for having got constant support from

all my teammates, clients, and family throughout the journey. Furthermore, I always believed in sincere working, taking responsibilities from the front, and making sure of completing them with utmost quality. Over the years, these qualities have been instrumental for the company in winning client trust.

How has COVID-19 impacted the operations and services of Infoshare Systems?

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a massive cultural shift among employees and employers across the globe. Companies that were reluctant about remote working before the pandemic have also adapted to the new normal. Infoshare Systems too was flexible about its operations during these critical times. Our first priority has been, and will always be, the safety and health of our employees and their families. So, we have all been working from home since March 2020. During the pandemic, we further added that the company introduced new processes and HR and Project Management applications to track the work progress. Moreover, with the right procedures in place and ample support, the company didn't let the pandemic affect its productivity to a large extent. Its service offerings and deliverables were planned considering the pandemic situation and delivered flawlessly. With these initiatives, I ensure to keep the employees concerned and driven without any impact on business.

WFH is the new normal for the majority of businesses. How did you deal with the WFH situation?

As work from home became the new normal, we introduced new technology and built effective & secured infrastructure for the virtual workplaces. We also arranged training and security awareness workshops to enhance skills and implemented some digital tools for project management, remote onboarding, and communication purpose. While the COVID-19 pandemic is a still learning experience to industries around the globe, Infoshare-Varutra was among those first few companies who started the WFH with effective coordination, motivation to employees, knowledge

sharing sessions to real-time status updating of the tasks and projects for highly successful client deliverables. We started motivational engagement activities to allow employees to improve and boost their confidence and spirits. It also conducted an employee engagement virtual event to keep the teams connected and lift their morale. We continue to deliver on our product roadmaps, deliverables, and services to our customers globally 24/7, deliver projects on time and continue to engage both new and existing customers.

How have you inculcated the innovation in Infoshare Systems?

I believe that being innovative is the way for success and need of today. Thus, Infoshare is determined to use the technology to the fullest to accelerate its business functions and enhance work efficiency & productive environment. The company aims to train its employees with the required skills and technologies. We are going to be on the path of becoming a stronger secure development center using vast platform capabilities on the web, mobile, cloud, along with Artificial Intelligence and ML. Staying continually motivated is vital for any leader to achieve the desired milestones. For me, alongside my passion for cybersecurity, there are several other sources of motivation such as reading books, success stories, and articles from industry leaders.

According to you, what are the facets of Successful Entrepreneurship?

Having successfully led an organization, I believe that enthusiasm, dedication, genuineness, understanding the customer needs with domain expertise, and a pleasant state of mind towards the industry as well as the competitors is the key to successful entrepreneurship. I believe that not losing hope, building a core team with setting up smaller goals is also critical to keep on progressing at the entrepreneurship ladder.

Out A Niche In The Financial Industry

In the last decade, APAC has seen a commendable growth in the economy. The Indian economy has also witnessed growth due to the influx of foreign direct investments. Businesses have been expanding in the region creating a wealth of job opportunities. This has resulted in individuals having more disposal income on the hands than ever before. Thus, arises the ability of investing which will benefit them with higher returns.

Investing with a higher return is a vital factor for financial planning. The market is filled with management firms targeting high net-worth individuals and their impressive portfolios but returns in the recent past as stagnated. Many firms promise to help each individual but focus on people with high net-worth but everyone just wants to shove prestructured products down the client’s throat to earn commissions. No one is interested to provide good service, the very core of money management. Being a differentiator amongst these companies, Anurag Bhatia ( Founder and CEO ) stepped in the market with Minance. The company was introduced with an aim to change the investment industry scenario by helping investors from all lifestyles to invest in products that were earlier available only to the ultra-rich. Tiny Conversation Becomes a Discussion and Soon a Business

Anurag was very young when he was fascinated by investment and the stock market. His parents wanted him to foster a hobby and Anurag chose a book on investments in the stock market. He was hooked. People also did joke

about the fact that he never read books from any other genre. By the age of 13 he had started investing his parents’ savings in the stock market.

A student of Science, Anurag graduated in Finance from Manipal University and pursued Postgraduate Research in Financial Mathematics at the London School of Economics. His first job was at Amazon India as a Risk Analyst. While working for Amazon, Anurag noticed that how people thought about their money and finances. While speaking to his colleagues he would suggest how to diversify their investment and his suggestions worked for them. This tiny conversation became a discussion and soon a business. Amazon was the place where the business of Minance was originated and he started building a clientele based on people who were interested in exploring the market also identifying the opportunities it has to offer. A years later, Anurag ventured into private wealth management with his start-up Minance. Today with 3,000 customers, Minance is a leading investment company.

Being Comprehensive With the Advice

An organization is built with people so, it is the leader’s responsibility to pass on the skills to others. Similarly, Anurag believes that his responsibilities do not end with pitching the products and trying to get more clients. At Minance, he makes sure that whatever knowledge he has gained is passed on to others. He also ensures that the team is actively involved in team meetings and are critical or focused on new businesses. Anurag adds, “ It is equally important for them to get the exposure that I get. We discuss ideas and strategies together and we listen to every single person’s opinion because Minance is not just my brand. When I talk to my partners about their investments it is not only their investments with Minance

but it’s their wealth as a whole. It is crucial to get that rapport with your clients to help them through their finances. ”

Treading Carefully Through the Challenges

“ There are always going to be people who will be unhappy with you but that should not stop you ,” affirms Anurag. Presently, the company is establishing its name in the market as it takes years and sometimes decades for a company to define its focus and culture. This is the challenge the company is facing hence, the team is treading carefully through the challenges. Being in the industry for five years, Minance has been successful in creating a reputation to maintain. Yet, the team is striving to achieve much more.

Risk is an inevitable factor while investing. No matter how much one tries to run away from the risks, it will catch on at some time. Anurag advises that the most important thing is to not be afraid of these risks. Following this same approach, Minance’s young team of professionals have taken incredible risks and learned from the success and failures over time. Similarly, he advises that his clients should also follow the same approach and be confident enough to face these risks. There is always a possibility of losing money but that should not stop one from investing.

One such empowering business leader is Capt Muthu Krishnan Iyyappan ( Founder and CEO of Eka Academy ) who has established himself as an extraordinary and pioneering business tycoon in the corporate training industry. He entered the industry despite people warning him not to because it was such a cluttered market, that a famous saying goes “ if you don't know what to do, then become a trainer and tell others what to do. ” He did become a trainer and indeed a good one. However, his journey was not a cakewalk, he encountered his share of challenges throughout the journey in establishing Eka Academy, a leading training solution provider today.

Domino Downfall of Business

Muthu described his initial days of entrepreneurship experience as wadding in unchartered waters filled with sharks and crocodiles. The industry he did step into was the classic example of “Red Ocean” with absolutely no entry barriers, no pre-defined standards, and no regulations. It

took about 8 months of patience persistence to get his first client. Meanwhile, waiting for the start as an entrepreneur, several employment opportunities were knocking his door. He credits his wife for constant support and encouragement as it took great power to resist the temptation of getting back into the comfort zone of employment.

After the commencement of the journey, it was a dream run for Eka Academy. The team grew from its first employee to a team of 65 in just 3 years. By 2015, the company expanded to Europe, thereby becoming the first Indian training company to have their official presence in Europe. Unfortunately the very next year, Eka Academy faced its first disaster. One of the clients with whom the company had great exposure to, suddenly went bankrupt causing Muthu and his team a huge loss. It took them back to the stone age with the team size reducing from 65 to 8 in just two months and there was a time when the office was shut down and the team worked from Muthu's house.

The bankruptcy of the client caused a domino effect on the business leading to a vicious cycle of no new clients and not having the resources to serve the existing clients. The business came to an all-time low, which drastically affected the financial condition too.

Muthu adds, “ We had to mortgage our house to continue paying the salaries but I am proud to say that we have never defaulted even by a single month on the salaries to our team. ”

The Best Shot Once Again

Muthu and his team did not give up despite the huge setback. It was in 2017, when the team decided to give it another shot and start all over again. Eka Academy team created its very first open house program called “Project Dronacharya” , which is a “train the trainer program”. This program became a turning point for the company as it was a runaway success. By 2018, the company started to hold stability and then the revival of the organization started. He further adds, “ This journey was possible only due to 4 P's that I steadfastly adhered to—Passion, Persistence, Perseverance, and Patience. ”

Today, Eka Academy is a full-service training solutions provider for corporate and business skills. It specializes in endto-end competency-based skill development interventions delivered specifically to the mid-management across a wide spectrum of industries, domains, and functional areas. With over 400 qualified and certified trainers spread across 80 locations in the country, the team is capable of delivering scalable interventions with a very short turnaround time. While ensuring standardization in methodology, it also consciously ensures localization in delivery so that the intervention gets the maximum impact.

Experiences Influencing Leadership Skills

Often the experiences we have throughout the journey help us to become the person we are today. Throughout his journey, Muthu too had the privilege to work with great leaders, both in the corporate as well as while serving in the military. But the one specific leader who highly impacted his life is Maj.Gen (retd). Dalvir Singh, AVSM, Vr.C, VSM. While serving in the military he reported to the then Brig. Dalvir who was the sub area commander

for Srinagar. Maj Gen Dalvir was a para commando belonging to the elite 10 Parachute Regiment (Special Forces). Even though he was a highly decorated officer, he was most down to earth when he was with his officers he commanded. The fact that Maj Gen. Dalvir was easily approachable whenever in need and that he was a good listener influenced Muthu greatly.

Maj. Gen. Singh's just didn't influence him as a person but also shaped Muthu into the leader he is today. Muthu even shares a notable incident that impacted his journey, he says, “ While I was in charge of the security of a sensitive installation in Srinagar, the Corps commander, who was a senior Lieutenant General, found a lapse which I was responsible for. But when the Corps Commander started questioning me the then Brig. Dalvir stepped up and took the whole accountability for the lapse. He told the Corps commander “Sir, this officer reports to me and if you want to hold someone accountable, then hold me accountable and not him”. His words still echo in my ears and taught me a lesson on accountability and responsibility which I never forget even now. ”

Leading By Personal Example

Being under command of a great mentor, Muthu learned that the best way to motivate is to stand and stay by the men whom one commands, and that is what he continued within the corporate life too. If he does come across any team member who has failed to close the deal, Muthu himself goes along with the member to personally close the deal. He further asserts, “ I have long learned that the traditional approach of “carrot and stick” sometimes fail. But the fail-proof way of motivating is standing by the team member who is struggling. ”

The current IT landscape is evolving more rapidly than ever. In the wake of the pandemic, organizations in every industry and region are recognizing the need for a digital core to meet the current business needs. Despite the world being highly impacted by the pandemic, Christopher Carter ( Founder & CEO at Approyo ) believes that businesses still must continue to course without any halt. The preparation and planning in the background should continue to go on regardless of the situation. “ The systems and applications we provide are essential to any business, therefore Approyo has continued to have a steady business throughout Covid-19 ,” affirms Christopher.

Presently, many businesses have witnessed a shift and due to this more and more executives are reaching out to learn about their options when it comes to ERP systems. Due to the crisis, the business operations have been altered. However, Approyo is amongst the essential business and thus is continually moving forward. There have been changes in the way the teams operate but the services are functional 24/7. As regards to the preventive measures against the virus, Christopher has given the employees the option to work from home or working from the office in the headquarters of Brookfield.

Even in the office premises, cleaning crews are coming to disinfect everything in order to ensure the safety of the employees. Also, social distancing is being equally practiced and as a measure, the meetings have been switched to a virtual meeting rather than in-person with the staff, customers, or partners.
