We had the pleasure of chatting with our amazing volunteers at Café Connect to discover what inspires them to volunteer and the important roles they play.
Matt is thrilled to be back cooking, after working in the kitchen over 35 years ago. His role at Café Connect involves everything from making sandwiches and muffins to prepping veggies and fruit. “Volunteering gives me a purpose and keeps me active,” he says. “If you’re thinking about it, just give it a try—you might find it’s exactly what you need.”
Ross, who stays busy with various volunteer roles, enjoys his time at Café Connect. Whether delivering meals or helping with orders and clean-up, he finds it fulfilling. “The
staff are great, and it’s much less pressure than paid work,” he shares. “Just give it a go—you might discover it’s a great fit!”
Sandra brings her café and aged care experience to Café Connect, where she helps with food prep and delivery. “Volunteering is a fantastic way to meet people and stay active,” she says. “Try it out—you might be pleasantly surprised!”
Our volunteers make Café Connect truly special, and we’re incredibly grateful for their dedication. Be sure to say hello if you see Matt, Ross, or Sandra around the Centre!

National Carers Week (13–19 October) celebrates the nearly 3 million Australians who provide essential care to family and friends. These unsung heroes juggle daily tasks, personal care, and emotional support, often balancing these with their own lives.
At Burnie Brae, we value carers and offer services that ease their load. Our in-home care supports daily tasks like personal care, cleaning, meal prep, and transportation.
Caring is rewarding but can also be exhausting. Our respite care gives carers time to recharge, whether through in-home support, centre day respite, or supported outings, allowing them a break while ensuring loved ones are well cared for. Funding is available through the Commonwealth Home Support Program and Home Care Packages.
This National Carers Week, we celebrate carers' incredible contributions and are here to support them through our care services. Learn more by visiting burniebrae.org.au/care or contact Burnie Brae on 3624 2121.

Can you share what your role involves?
A Physiotherapist is a health professional who helps you get the most out of life. They assess, diagnose, and treat or help to manage certain conditions. A Physiotherapist can help you recover from injury, improve mobility, and help prevent further injury.
What are your qualifications?
I graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2017 and gained extensive experience working in multiple hospitals and community settings in Brisbane and the United Kingdom.
What inspired you to choose this career path?
I wanted to find a profession that could help people who were injured to get back to their activities of daily living or sport. I am also passionate about providing education on healthy living and staying active.
What is the most fulfilling part of your job?
When patients are able to achieve their goals and feel empowered to continue their journey.
Hydrotherapy involves specialised exercises in a warm-water pool, offering a gentle yet effective way to improve flexibility, strength and overall health. It’s particularly helpful for those dealing with chronic pain, arthritis, mobility challenges, injuries or anyone seeking a low-impact exercise option.
Our Physiotherapist, Grace will be leading the hydrotherapy sessions, starting Thursday 3 October. We offer two classes every Thursday from 8:00am – 8:45am and 8:45am – 9:30am.
Each class is limited to 3 participants to ensure a personalised experience. Classes are held at the Emily Seebohm Aquatic Centre – 523 Telegraph Rd, Fitzgibbon.
Before attending hydrotherapy, an in-clinic assessment at Healthy Connections is required to ensure the program is suitable for your needs. For more information or to book your assessment, please contact us on 3624 2185.
