Dear Friends, As I cycle from our home in Rochester to Burham and Wouldham I feel a real connection with the countryside. I see the winter wheat, the lambs in spring, the rapeseed, the beet, the barley, the calves in autumn. I see fruit and veg in fields and gardens and on allotments, and wild plum and apple and nut trees. It’s a big change from the inner city where I grew up, and I love it, though cities can be wonderful places too.

This month we celebrate harvest in church and it’s also the month in which we honour St. Francis of Assisi, the saint with a famous love for and affinity with animals.

In our modern, more urban world, it’s not surprising that we want sometimes to reconnect with a rural world. So many people are now growing their own veg again, and so many people are learning to do real cooking again.

To feed the world, we rely on industrial processes and largescale farming.

Jesus lived on earth in a largely rural area, and had much to say about fair wages for the landless poor who worked the land, about simplicity and what we need. The bible teaches us about care for the land. This teaching is still important for us.

In our harvest festivals we are encouraged to be generous to those who have very little, and as consumers, to try when possible to buy fairly-traded products like coffee and tea, so that farming co-operatives can work for the good of whole communities.

We are also reminded by the life and example of St. Francis of the importance of environmental issues and animal welfare in domestic and farm settings.

A harvest that takes into account justice and ecology is a real Festival celebration.

REPAIRS TO ALL SAINTS CHURCH, WOULDHAM Over the centuries, repairs have constantly been needed to All Saints Church, Wouldham to maintain it as the beautiful parish church that it is and on into the future.

Church of England churches are inspected every five years to ensure that they are safe and in a good state of repair and we were pleased to receive a good report saying that we have looked after our church well. However, wear and tear has taken its toll as it has done over the centuries. Now there are repairs needed to the guttering, stonework and woodwork by specialist stonemasons and craftsmen.

Parishioners have been generously donating to the repair fund year by year at our fundraising events but an amount in the range of £40,000 is still required to complete the repairs. If you can make a donation (no matter how small) it would mean we can keep our beautiful, old and historic church standing for many more years to come and appreciated by everyone.

Donations by cheque are payable to ‘Burham and Wouldham PCC’.

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is dedicated together with the name of the person who has worked the cushion. Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and informed at which Service it will be dedicated.

Each cushion costs £170 which covers materials for one pew cushion only. Sharing the cost with others who have expressed an interest is possible so contributions over £30 are gratefully received. The cushions are worked by volunteers as it is a non-profit making activity. Can you help by making a donation to the scheme? Thank you.

Over the Churchyard Walls by Dennis Worcester This has been a lovely summer with rain and sunshine encouraging Plants, insects and butterflies. The birds have kept me company whilst tending the grass in both churchyards.

This year has been particularly good for butterflies and I have managed to identify species such as Red Admiral, Small Skipper, Brimstone, Large White, Small White, Orange Tip, Peacock, Common Blue, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown butterflies.

The abundance of butterflies is a result of leaving uncut areas of wild flowers in the churchyards so this has been a worthwhile exercise.

The old stone walls in Wouldham continue to be home to a good number of Common Lizard and can be seen sunning themselves during the summer months.

As usual there have been a great number of birds around and on several occasions I have been lucky enough to hear the “gronking� call of the raven and then see it passing over. We are lucky in this area to also see Buzzards, Kestrel, Sparrowhawks and the occasional Hobby so keep your eyes peeled for these fantastic birds of prey.

BUTTERFLIES Butterfly Conservation, the charity which runs the Big Butterfly Count said that the Small Tortoiseshell has made an amazing comeback. Numbers have increased by nearly a quarter compared with a year ago. The butterfly was feared to be facing extinction after its population had dropped nearly 80% over the last 40 years, with the decline blamed by experts on a particular parasitic fly. The small tortoiseshell had a good year in 2013 and this seems to have acted as a springboard for recovery for the species.

BOOK EXCHANGE This month’s Book Exchange takes place on Saturday October 4th from 10.30am till 12. When you can exchange your books, purchase new ones while enjoying tea or coffee and a piece of homemade cake. We ask for a donation of £1 and an extra 50p for any book you purchase.

FILM CLUB This month’s meeting is on Wednesday October 1st when we will be showing the film ‘Mrs Henderson Presents’ starring Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins. It is about a woman who buys and re-opens a London theatre.

CHARITY The proceeds from our Afternoon Teas, Book Exchange, Country Lunch and Film Club are put together each month and with a contribution from Church funds, money is sent to a selected charity. During July and August we put together both months money and were able to send £380 to a special appeal by Water Aid ‘To be a Girl’ helping to provide private washing areas, safe water and installing water supplies nearer to their homes so that girls do not have to spend all their day carrying water for their families. The Government has promised to double the amount given for this project.

The chosen charity for September and October will be a local branch of MNDA which supports research and those suffering from Motor Neurone Disease.

‘LOG ON’ FOR MORE ON TRENPORT WORKS Work is now well under way for the Peters Village and new Medway Crossing project by Trenport.

A new construction helpline 01634 863092 is now in operation, but the website www.trenport.co.uk is also packed with information, including an online version of the company’s latest local newsletter, explaining many issues and frequently asked questions arising from the development. An updated construction schedule will soon be posted too.

Local people hoping to buy a home on the new development and stay close to their families, will also be pleased that Trenport has heeded their requests and added a new facility on the website so they can register an interest to buy.

SHOE BOX APPEAL Shoeboxes are sent to Eastern Europe for Christmas.

Some people have so little and things we take for granted can mean so much. Gifts are luxuries that can’t be afforded. Please fill a shoe box with small gifts to bring joy this Christmas.

Wrap a shoebox & lid separately. No food other than sweets.

Note whether the gifts are for a: girl 3- 7, girl 8-12, teenage girl, woman, elderly woman, boy 3-7, boy 8-12, teenage boy or man. Then attach the list to the outside of the box.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Refurbishment of the Village Hall New flooring and central heating has been installed in the Village Hall over the summer holiday period. The Parish Council were successful in its grant application for the KCC's Local Members Grant for funding and received ÂŁ3000 for the installation of the central heating to the main hall.

This application was supported by County Councillor Peter Homewood.

A grant from the Big Lottery Fund 'Awards for All' for ÂŁ3412 has also been received for the new flooring and the gas supply connection to the hall. The next big project that the Village Hall Committee are going to work on is improving the toilet block. This area is very unappealing and is suffering from damp in the floor. Several repairs have already had to be made to the floor here but the Village Hall Committee would to look at various ideas for improving this area and making a better community facility available for the village to use. If there are any architects or builders in the village who would be willing to help the Committee with putting some ideas together please contact the Parish Clerk.

Doggy update it has been reported that dog poo bags are being thrown into the bushes on the recreation ground particularly around the Tramway area. Please use the dog bins provided in the village or take the bag home and use your own bin. Residents have reported to the Parish Council that they felt the dog stencils in the High Street were successful and therefore the Parish Council will ask Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council to put the stencils along the High Street pavement again. A successful 'doggy morning' was held on Wouldham recreation ground in August with many dog owners taking advantage of the free micro-chipping. TMBC also introduced the yellow dog scheme by giving away free yellow ribbons.

This scheme aims to create awareness of dogs that need space for many reasons such as whilst in training, recovering from surgery or in season.

TMBC are asking all responsible dog owners whose dog needs space to indicate this to others by displaying a simple yellow ribbon, yellow bandana or yellow lead or dog coat. Likewise members of the public are asked to avoid approaching dogs wearing yellow. continued ....

BURHAM Church of England PRIMARY SCHOOL Term 1 is now well underway with our children and staff returning refreshed from the summer break. Our Key Stage 1 children are focusing on The Seven Wonders of the World (Year 1) and America (Year 2) for their Creative Curriculum and having lots of fun taking part in a wide variety of activities and lessons related to this topic. Key Stage 2’s Creative Curriculum topic is currently The Aztecs for Dolphin, Meerkat and Tiger classes (Years 3,4 and 5) whilst Giraffe Class (Year 6) is learning about all aspects of Victorian life.

Our new children in Panda class (Year R) and in other classes have now settled well into our school community. Swimming classes have resumed at Larkfield with every Key Stage 2 child being given the opportunity to participate during the year. Giraffe Class is already working hard on their Enterprise activities to raise money for their end of year school trip (Summer 2015).They are hoping to see The Lion King stage production in London which is a great goal to work towards and we wish them every success in their ventures.

We are offering more clubs than ever this year and are extremely grateful to the staff, governors and parents who give their time freely to make many of these possible. This term our children have the opportunity to take part in clubs including Gymnastics, Cross Country, Netball, Knitting, Football and Zumba & Street Dance. We are hoping to offer additional clubs as the year progresses.

We recently celebrated Harvest Festival and donated our families’ contributions of food to local charities. Thank you to everyone who donated items; your generosity will have made a real difference to the lives of those in need.

We are now looking forward to our PTFA’s fundraising fashion show on Friday 10th October at 6.30pm. The clothing will be provided by Kids on the Catwalk and children from all year groups within the school will have the chance to model the clothes and ‘walk the runway’. continued......

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School Well we are at the beginning of a new school year and we have welcomed the children back as well as welcoming our new children and parents in Otter Class.

Some of you may have noticed that the chimneys have been removed from the old school building during the summer holidays. This was due to them becoming unstable and leading to leaks in the school hall. There has also been a facelift for the outside of school this year with painting and replacing of windows, decorating play equipment in the infant playground and the repainting of the walkway. It has made the school look really smart and ready for business!

The school is always busy with the children enjoying an extended curriculum with clubs during lunchtimes and after school. The children are enjoying judo, Gillingham football club training, nature club, puppet club, chess club….the list goes on and on!

The juniors this term are learning about WW1 and have visited Chislehurst Caves and Royal Engineers Museum as well as learning about the local impact of WW1 in Wouldham. The infants topic this term is ‘Where We Live’ and you may have seen them walking around the village learning lots about where they live and talking to local residents about how the village has changed. There are the usual activities of swimming, forest school at Shorne Wood and library visits to Strood every week. Our annual Trafalgar Day service takes place on 21st October starting at 9.15am in the Church.

We are always looking for opportunities to involve the local community in the life of the school, and would love to hear from anyone who has a talent they would like to share such as art, gardening, sewing and sports.

We have also had some staff changes this term with two new teachers joining our happy team, Miss Harris in Otter Class and Ms Greenwood – Hone in Fox Class. We have also said goodbye for a while to Mrs Jones and Mrs Kerbey as they go off on maternity leave to have their babies and we wish them a wonderful time with their new families.

Clinic is held every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. No need to book. A soft play area is available Wednesday am Stay & Play. 10.00-11.00am, Eccles, St Marks C of E Primary School.

Our Ofsted inspection found Jellybeans provision to be ‘good’ Sessions run Monday to Friday 9.15am – 11.45am, and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, 12.25pm – 2.55pm. For all children aged from 2yr.
