Dear Friends, Bible Sunday is on 23rd October In Church of England services we read key passages from the Bible on a 3 year pattern. This pattern centres on the 4 Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which are the books containing the accounts of Jesus’ life and teaching. Readings from other parts of the Bible, matching the Gospel, are read alongside it each week. Some are from the Old Testament which is a collection of books of various kinds, including history, prophecy, wisdom and poetry. Some are from the New Testament, which contains early church history and letters of encouragement. I want to say that Christianity is much more than a religion about a book. It’s about a relationship with God, and about how we relate to other people, and the book is one of the things that helps us with that. On Bible Sunday in church at the 10.30 Service of Holy Communion we will be thinking about how we make use of and interpret the bible. We will consider the value of reading it, and how we would go about it. There will be examples of different bible translations on display. Some people still have old family bibles which have spaces for family history at the front. If you have one of these, you may like to bring it with you, and show it to people in church over coffee afterwards. Most family bibles of these kind are older translations which would be hard for most of us to actually use today, so although they have a historical interest, and are often very beautifully produced books, for practical purposes it would be important to have a newer translation. I hope this will be a good opportunity for us to explore together our use of the bible.

In peace Mike.

Walter Burke was the Purser aboard HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. He famously comforted Admiral Horatio Nelson as he lay dying onboard Victory. When he retired from the Navy he lived in Wouldham and was buried at All Saints' churchyard in 1815. 3

PROBLEMS AGAIN WITH THE 155 EVENING BUS SERVICE Local residents alerted Tracey Crouch, our Member of Parliament, to intended cuts to the 155 evening bus services. She and our local Kent County Councillor and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Councillors met with Arriva Bus Company. Arriva explained that the 155 service is making a financial loss and that the least used services are the ones running after 8:00pm.Therefore Arriva intended to cut these services from 18th September this year. Tracey’s team explained to Arriva that, back in 2012, the problem was put to the people who live in the villages and, as a result, the use of the service increased so that it didn’t need to be cut. Now Kent County Council has agreed to provide financial support for the 155 evening services up until February and so giving the villages time to increase their usage. Therefore the service is secure for the next 6 or so months but we must use the evening service more if it is not going to be cut after that. For all Arriva bus services including the 155, people with mobile smart phones can download an App giving the timetable and real time updates at: https://www.arrivabus.co.uk/app/ Here for instance you can track the bus on its route until it reaches you.

WINCHESTER HOUSE NURSING HOME, WOULDHAM October is here, the leaves are falling and the summer months seem all but a distant memory! But what great fun we had, with a street party, a lovely boat trip and visits to Aylesford Priory to name but a few. But we’re now enjoying all things autumnal. We have tidied the community garden in preparation for the winter months and planted lots of spring bulbs. We’ve also had great fun making our scarecrow to support the Friends of Wouldham All Saints School competition and look forward to seeing the scarecrows around Wouldham village. There is a now a buzz of excitement as we prepare for our week long virtual cruise! Winchester House will be transformed into a cruise ship for one week, experiencing cultures, food and music from five different countries across the world on our whistle-stop tour. Also, this month we are planning a party to celebrate our ‘Barchester in Bloom’ success and invite all those who helped us on our journey. So for details of that and other forthcoming events please check out our website. www.barchester.com Tel: 01634 685001

HANDS ACROSS THE WATER More than 130 people enjoyed a ‘sneak preview’ of the new Medway bridge between Wouldham and Halling, nearly a week before it opened officially. Two walks, organised by Peters Village developer Trenport and its contractor Bam Nuttall, invited guests from all generations including 60 children from the village schools of Wouldham, Burham, Eccles and Halling – who crossed in the morning - and the four oldest residents of Wouldham Old friends reunited and Halling, who were part of an adults’ walk in the afternoon. For the latter, the walk was also a trip down memory lane as all four remembered the last time this stretch of the Medway was bridged - albeit temporarily - by a WWII Bailey Bridge erected by the Army. Wouldham’s oldest residents, Sidney (86) and Mary Cooper (91) said: “People used it to get to jobs or just go for new walks - we made new friends. The The Rectors and the Fishes Councils fought to keep it after the war, but I think they needed to keep the river open for big boats in those days.” The couple’s counterparts on the opposite bank, Gladys Parris and Bet Hodkin, both 90, also remembered that other bridge: “They never should have taken it down,” said Mrs Parris, “But we’ve got this super new one now.” The walk was also marked by a symbolic gesture from the Rectors of the parishes on each bank, who each exchanged a fish emblem made by their respective local schools. The Rev Hugh Broadbent, Rector of Snodland, explained: “Apparently, there was some kind of fishing dispute between the fishermen of both banks, and the then Rector of Burham was responsible for calming things down – oil on troubled waters.” The Rev Mike Hayes, Rector of Burham and Wouldham, added: “So we thought it would be rather nice to use the new bridge to mark that ‘peace’ and exchange symbolic fish to herald what we expect to be a new era of co-operation between our New friends to be made parishes.” The new bridge opened officially on Thursday 15 September. Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School Everything at school is back in full swing and we are enjoying the start of what should prove to be a very exciting year. We welcome our new school secretary, Mrs Vicky Arnold to our school and she is looking forward to getting to know everybody really well. We also welcome all our new ‘Doves’ as they start their learning journey in the Reception Year! We’ll also enjoy getting to know you well and see you start to ‘Fly HIGH’ in all you do. We are now deep into our themes of ‘Out of Africa’ for Dove, Kingfisher and Starling and really engrossed in the stories of Roald Dahl for our ‘Story-nory’ theme in the juniors. September highlights included the opening of the new bridge, trips to Wingham Wildlife Park, a West End matinee to see Matilda and school photos being taken. We’ve also now got all our usual clubs and music lessons operating as normal and hope to have some sports fixtures in the diary soon as well. October will be exciting for all and especially so for Years 5 and 6 as they embark on their adventure week residential at Swattenden Outdoor Centre in the first week – let’s hope for good weather but then again - a bit of mud is good for the skin! We also celebrate Harvest (30th September!) and ‘The Friends’ are organising a Scarecrow festival around the village. This is a first time event and we are sure it will be really good but please come along and support it and enjoy the different scarecrows on display! We also have our first ‘Show n Share’ event on Wednesday 19th October where your children can happily show you the work they have produced this term. This takes place in all classes from 3.15 until 4pm. It doesn’t seem like a year since the last one but Trafalgar Day is with us once more. This is the last day of term (Friday 21st) and will be as normal with flower laying on the graveside of Walter Burke followed by a service led by our Year 4 Class of Robins. A warm welcome awaits all those who come along on the day and we will put on refreshments in the school hall afterwards as well. We haven’t got much to update on the progress of the new school building but hope to have more to say by the time the next magazine is printed. A reminder that the term finishes on Friday 21st October with everyone returning for Term 2 on Monday 31st October. 9

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL

The council meeting was held in the village hall on Tuesday September 7th 2016. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s 20 year plan “The Way Forward”. Borough Councillor Dalton brought this to the PC’s attention, TMBC are looking at predictions on population, housing, infrastructure and all that goes with it, their conclusions will affect planning in the years to come. The consultation will be running from September 30th for 8 weeks. We will let you know the details. 155 Bus service. Following on from the decision by Arriva to cancel the evening bus service, our MP Tracey Crouch arranged a meeting with Arriva and local councillors, the result of that meeting is that KCC have agreed to help fund the service for 6 months. It is vitally important that this service remains with us, so please use it whenever possible. Please check that the driver acknowledges your ticket/pass so that the numbers are recorded correctly. Traffic Problems. WPC are aware of all the problems affecting Wouldham at this time. We are monitoring numbers of cars through the village, we have asked for the traffic warden to visit more often we are putting up “Unsuitable for HGV” signs where we can and we are contacting Speed Watch for advice on speeding, this was brought up by 2 members of the public who were particularly concerned about Wouldham Road where is enters the village near the Church. Please watch your speed when coming into the village. Football. There are now junior goal posts on the Rec and training is about to start, thank you to everyone for all the enthusiasm. We will keep you informed here and on Facebook and on the noticeboards and hopefully this will lead to teams playing under the Wouldham name. Fun Day. Early Saturday morning, we looked out the window, sighs of relieve all round, it was a hot and sunny day, August 27th was going to be a Fun Day. Despite some early set backs, the dog show cancelled at the last minute and the bridge collapsed on the M20 preventing Eagle Heights from arriving on time, it turned out to be a hugely successful day. It started with a parade through the village, the fancy dress competition was gorgeous, there were many stalls from the village and elsewhere, plenty of food and drink to be had – delicious. The bird of prey exhibition was amazing to get so close to these lovely birds, it felt like the whole village attended. The tug of war left everyone in an even better mood ready for the band in the evening. Thanks go to everyone who organized it and also to the many people who helped put it all together – too many here to mention. And thank you to the village for turning out as you did, cannot wait for next year.

Parking in the village is very tight particularly in certain areas like Church Street and Rochester Road and everyone’s co-operation would be appreciated. Please also ensure that when parking, residents do not cause an obstruction near to entrances or exits. As a reminder, vehicles parked in the car parks MUST be taxed, MOT’d, insured and in a road worthy condition. The car parks should not be for “storage” of vehicles. Mobile Library. OCTOBER in Your Garden ‘Autumn is a second spring, when every leaf is a flower.’ Now the days are shorter, and the weather is turning, it means there are less opportunities for meaningful gardening. However now is an ideal time to make sure that the garden has been tidied up for winter. Daylight hrs and temperature at this time of year affect the rate of growth of shrubs, hedges and lawns, and whilst the lawns and hedges may still need tidying up at the end of the month, don’t cut them harshly in case the weather changes as frosts can cause irreparable damage especially to freshly cut surfaces. If the weather holds for a while longer, then keep up with the dead-heading and cutting back – its unlikely to encourage any fresh blooms at this time of year but will keep borders looking tidy. However I would also encourage leaving some seed heads and hollow stems around the garden for the winter (as many as your eye will allow), as these provide valuable food & hibernation holes for native insects. If you feel your garden lacks winter interest keep an eye out for Cornus varieties as these will provide colourful stems throughout the winter and be a real visual highlight throughout the winter. These are cut back in Spring to allow for new growth which will become next winters colour, and should get bigger and stronger as the years go by. On a fine day, visit Broadview Gardens at Hadlow to see how effectively Cornus can be used in this way. Or alternatively take in a park or arboretum to take in the beautiful hues of Autumn as the gold, bronzes, reds and oranges fade before Winter arrives. Also plant spring bedding such as Erysimum (Wallflowers), Pansies or Primulas ready for your spring display. Autumn is also an ideal time to mulch your borders, it helps to limit frost damage to the soil surface and helps to protect plant roots. A generous layer (2+cm) of compost or bark chippings will all help to enrich your borders and also to suppress the weeds in spring. Other things to be doing this month: Pick any remaining tree fruit and store/freeze for winter. Continue to fill up bird feeders and baths for our native species to fatten up before the cold weather arrives. Rake up leaves, bag up & store for leaf mould to use in a year or so. Bring any tender plants in pots into the shed or greenhouse if any frosts are forecast. Start to harvest winter cabbages & sprouts, carrots and any remaining beans. We have some Wouldham allotment plots available. [Contact Ashley on 686859] Sue Durrani, Secretary, Allotment Association, Wouldham 17

BURHAM CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, RESPONSIBILITY, FORGIVENESS, TRUST

The early part of September was spent ensuring that our new Reception children were settled before they began coming to school for full days, as well as making sure that the rest of our pupils were happy and settled in their new classes with their new teachers. Following on from our 'good' inspection of the school by the National Society of Anglican and Methodist Schools, the school received a letter from The Venerable Clive Mansell, Archdeacon and Acting Chair to the Board of Education for the Diocese of Rochester. In his letter he highlights the fact that 'the Christian character of the school has resulted in your pupils being exceptionally courteous and well behaved' as well as the fact that the school provides, 'valuable opportunities for prayer and reflection, thus nurturing the spiritual development of your pupils and the spiritual life of the school'. We are very proud of our achievements so far and are looking forward to building on this as we continue on our journey to an 'outstanding' inspection. During the later part of September the children enjoyed taking part in activities to mark what would have been the 100th birthday of Roald Dahl. We also launched our 'Resilience Curriculum' which has been designed to provide children with skills that they might need to cope with issues that they may have to deal with in their lives. The end of September saw all of our children participate in a Harvest Festival service at Burham Church and the school held a Macmillan coffee morning for parents to raise funds for this worthy cause. Our PTFA have been hard at work organising a Fireworks Display which will take place at the school on the evening of Friday 4th November. (see page 19). We hope this will be an opportunity for the people from Burham and the surrounding villages to come along and support the work that the PTFA does to raise money for our school. Look out for the posters going up with all the details. As always, all updates relating to our school can be found on our website www.burham.kent.sch.uk If you would like to get involved with our PTFA please do get in touch office@burham.kent.sch.uk 21
