This is held every Tuesday from 3.0pm till 4.30 and is open for everyone to join us for a cup of tea, piece of cake and a ‘Fun Quiz’ COUNTRY LUNCH The Special Christmas Country Lunch takes place on Thursday December 10th at 1.0.pm when the cost will be £3.00. There will be a special soup with homemade Christmas Pudding and cream to follow. The Lunch in January will be on January 14th. All are very welcome to join us for a meal of homemade soup, bread and cheese followed by fruit crumble and ice cream and tea or coffee.

BOOK EXCHANGE Our Book Exchange will take place as usual on December 5 th but will change to the second Saturday in January i.e January 9th. Bring books you have read and exchange for new ones while enjoying tea, coffee and a piece of cake.

FILM CLUB December’s Film Club takes place on Wednesday December 2nd at 7.30pm when we will be showing the classic Christmas film ‘Love Actually’. January’s film is yet to be selected and will take place on January 6 th. Do join us at 7.30pm to watch the film and share tea and coffee afterwards for which we ask a donation of £1.

CHARITIES The chosen charity for September and October was the local branch of the Altzeimher’s Society. November and December’s donations including the proceeds from the Concert given by Robin Oakley will go to Children in Need. The chosen charity for January has not yet been decided 7

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Police Crime Figures: Good news no crimes were reported between 27 September 2015 and 26 October 2015. However, if you witness anything suspicious including anti-social behaviour or criminal damage, please report to the Police on 101. Obviously, if it is a very serious matter, then 999 should be called.

Street lighting: As residents are hopefully aware KCC will be upgrading the street lights to LED technology. Work in residential areas is due to commence in early 2016 which will take about 14 months, followed by main roads and town centers. It is hoped that KCC can save 5.2 million each year by changing to LED lighting.

Whilst concerns have been expressed by residents regarding the parking in Rochester Road particularly near to the Fleur de Lys site, TMBC have advised that no intervention is justified at this stage. TMBC also advised that they had not received any direct concerns. If you have concerns, contact me and I will provide you with a direct contact at TMBC. Once again, we need to remind some residents to be responsible dog owners and clear up after their dogs. The majority of residents are very good, but there’s still a few who believe it is acceptable to leave their dog deposits on the pavements/streets or in the recreation ground. This is not acceptable. On average, dogs do a number two twice per day which adds up to 14 piles of poo in just one week per dog. Certainly not nice to see on the streets/pavements or in the recreation ground. Please, please be responsible. .

CCTV Bell Lane and Church Street Car Parks: Whilst it was reported last month that it was hoped that the CCTV would be installed by then, unfortunately, delays were experienced with the contractor. Once again, by the time this goes to print, all (fingers crossed) should be installed.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council met on 3rd November in the Village Hall.

DAFFODIL PLANTING Councillors Goode and Fulwell have successfully planted bulbs and some wild flowers around the Village, we are so looking forward to seeing the results in the spring.

RUBBISH BINS Councillor Parris is getting quotes to replace some of the bins in the village with new ones, there are problems with foxes raiding the bins and this will be prevented by getting lidded bins. So look out for our new shiny bins.

CCTV Our County Councillor Peter Homewood has agreed to help us fund CCTV for the Car Park on Knowle Road, we are hoping this will increase security for the area and encourage more residents to use it. Quotes are being sort.

CHRISTMAS CARDS This year Wouldham Project have printed Christmas cards using a photo taken by Lynn Russ of Wouldham Church in the snow, they are for sale in the Village shop and the Church and from committee members at a cost of ÂŁ1 each.

MOBILITY SCOOTER The 60+ club were given a Careco mobility scooter which could be loaned to anyone needing short-term mobility help. Please contact Daphne Parris via email daphneparris@sky.com or via the Parish Council.

WOULDHAM SCHOOL Final responses to the Wouldham School move consultation had to be in by November 11th. The results will be collated and provided to the Education and Young People’s Services Cabinet Committee and the Cabinet Member as the decision maker. The Public Notice period will take place and respondents will have a further opportunity to express their views. Then the Cabinet Member will use this information to make his decision.

Wouldham Parish Council have backed this move with reservations but are doing all they can to make sure that if this move goes ahead it will become a real asset for the village.

VILLAGE SIGNS You will soon notice 2 new signs for the village, a new village sign will replace the one opposite the shop which has seen better days and a sign warning HGV drivers of the unsuitability of the village roads will be placed at the village end of School Lane.

YOUTH CLUB The Youth Club is now coming to Wouldham on Mondays and Tuesdays. They will be in the Village Hall on Mondays from 3.30pm and their van will be in its usual place in the Rec on Tuesdays. Please come along.

October was a very busy month for residents when they were treated to a visit from the children of Wouldham School who came to show off their wonderful Harvest festival artwork and chatted with residents and staff. We were also very honoured to be invited by the school to the Trafalgar Day Service at All Saints Church. The children, staff and all involved put on a wonderful service celebrating the life of Sir Walter Burke.

As winter fast approaches, we decided here at Winchester House to go on a virtual cruise around the world. We celebrated different cultures and enjoyed music, activities and cuisines from countries like India, China and the Philippines – it was a fun, informative and exhausting week!

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School Term 2 has so far seen a very busy November with parents meetings, Bonfire Night – re-arranged fireworks, sports events, Children in Need, visiting bishops, consultations, writing days as well as the usual exciting mix of learning both indoors and out and about!

The School Parliament discussed ways of supporting Children in Need and decided to have a ‘dressing up’ day along with a cake sale. Well done to Dolcie, our Prime Councillor, for being a great leader and making the day happen successfully. An equal well done to the entire School Parliament for their enthusiasm and hard work.

The consultation on the proposal to relocate the school is now closed and a decision will be made by KCC during December. If all goes ahead then there will be detailed designs submitted for a planning proposal which will also include a consultation period.

We have seen some initial suggestions and ideas and now look forward to seeing a design take shape on paper and then hopefully become a fixed structure in the not too distant future.

We are also about to begin the festive season with a busy schedule of activities including a musical concert, nativities and plays as well as a more traditional style carol service for the older children. Last year we had a very enjoyable day on a carol singing tour calling at a number of care homes and Strood library and we are thrilled to be able to repeat this again at the end of term. This means we will be very busy polishing our performance skills in readiness for some very busy weeks!

2016 will no doubt bring plenty of challenges and adventures and as we are in the midst of winter (which may be bleak) we’d like to ask our families to keep up to date with our ‘bad weather’ plans on our website.

PETERS VILLAGE UPDATE – New Year will see a start on first homes for Peters Village

Work starts in early 2016 on the 1,000 new homes creating a new community on the upper reaches of the River Medway.

The £50 million Peters Village development by Trenport Investments will link with Burham, Eccles and Wouldham on the Kent river’s east bank and - via an all-new road bridge - Halling and Snodland to the west.

Trenport has pledged that Peters Village will not be a ‘new estate’, but a new community rising out of a brown field site, formerly home to the Peters Lime and Cement Works. This once employed 1,000 people and operated 80 barges, but closed in the 1920s.

Work on the infrastructure for this new community began in May 2014, with the biggest element here being a major new road from the A228 roundabout between Halling and Snodland, using a replacement bridge over the west bank’s north-south rail line, before spanning the Medway to link the east bank.

“This river bridge is the key to everything,” explained Trenport Director Chris Hall. “Those moving into Peters Village will then be attracted by easy access to jobs, education, shopping, recreation and London, but those same benefits apply to all neighbouring villages, on both banks.

“Housebuilding has been phased so that occupation of new homes does not exceed existing roads capacity until the new bridge opens next summer, but the building of the first properties in Phase 1 should start early in 2016.

“We are delighted that this important phase will be developed by Bellway, one of the UK’s top five builders.”

Bellway Sales Director Nicky Morton said: “We are excited to be the first housebuilder onsite at Peters Village and working with a developer like Trenport, which has had the foresight to create a quality template not just for Phase 1 – which includes the prestigious riverside frontage – but the whole development.

“The same approach was used by the developer at Kings Hill, near West Malling, where we have our regional office, paying dividends in terms of quality and continuity there. “We are also pleased to have a further opportunity to build in Kent where there is demand for the housing quality and realistic pricing we like to offer.�

The Peters Village site is approximately 35.05 hectares (86.61 acres) 11.1 hectares (27.3 acres) is public open space.

The development will be mostly low rise and include a new local centre next to the river, including community centre, medical centre, pharmacy, convenience store and smaller shops, plus office accommodation.

This wide-ranging project also includes: a primary school, open space and playing fields, riverside walk, plus future protection and management for the Peters Pit nature reserve (SSSI).

BURHAM C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, RESPONSIBILITY, First of all we wish all of our children, staff and families a very Christmas. The school is always a hive of activity at this time of year with craft activities, musical performances, the PTFA Christmas Fair and our Christmas productions. These are focused on the true meaning of Christmas and why this is such a very special time of year for all of us. The following is just a flavour of the many, many other fun and enriching activities that are due to take place before the Christmas break….

A visit by Elephant Class (Year 1) to Tesco in Lunsford Park, Larkfield to take part in their ‘Farm to Fork’ trail and to make gingerbread men. This was thanks to one of our Year 1 parents who contacted the store on our School’s behalf.

A visit to the Orchard Theatre Dartford by Giraffe Class (Year 6) to see ‘Gangsta Granny’ (based on the hilarious story by David Williams). Year 6 will also be taking part in the ‘Sing Around Christmas’ at All Saints Church in Maidstone, alongside many other local schools. It is wonderful that we are invited to participate in this each year and we are proud of our children representing our School.

Penguin and Dolphin Classes (Years 2 and 3) will be participating in Science workshops regarding fungi which are to be run by a member of the Medway Valley Volunteers Group. We thank them for giving up their time for this.

When this magazine goes to print we will either be on the verge of holding our PTFA Christmas Fair or recovering from it (!) – either way we are so grateful to the parents, teachers and friends of the School who belong to the PTFA and who make such activities possible. Our children love the Christmas Fair and it’s a great experience for all involved – even the helpers! Events like this enable the PTFA to fund additional valuable and enriching equipment. I should like to personally thank the PTFA for its recent purchase of a bubble tube to further enhance our reflective area within the school.

We are looking forward to welcoming back Reverend Mike Hayes who is due to visit our School to lead an Act of Worship and our Advent Eucharist. We are also most grateful to Arabella Paul from the Faith Mission and who will once again be running the popular 'Treasure Seekers' Club for our children. We also await with great anticipation our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Christmas productions which are always hugely enjoyable and the result of a lot of hard work by our staff and children. Burham PreSchool will be invited to attend our Key Stage 1 production as well and we look forward to welcoming their staff and children. We are also looking forward to the Family Trust Pantomime again this year – rather than performing, our children finally get to take a well-earned break and to be in the audience!

The end of term will herald yet another excellent Christmas dinner freshly prepared in our own kitchen by our brilliant kitchen staff (and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their commitment and hard work throughout the year). We will also be welcoming our families to our Christmas Church Service as well as to the Family SingA-Long on the last day of term. December & January in Your Garden ‘Don’t think the garden loses its ecstasy in Winter.

It’s quiet, but the roots are down there riotous’ Now that the days are cooler and shorter there is less opportunity to be out in the garden, & hopefully by now most chores have been done.

However there is still a few tasks that can be done now if a fine dry day appears.

Winter is an ideal time to carry out pruning of hardy perennials and fruit trees (although not stone fruit – leave these until spring). Roses can now be cut back by a half, removing and dead, diseased or damaged branches in the process.

Always prune to an outward facing bud where possible to maintain a nice ‘goblet’ shape to help encourage air flow. This should help to keep the bush stable through the winter and will promote healthy fresh growth in spring. Also make sure the last of any leaves have been cleared from the base to discourage over-wintering of the black-spot virus. Apply the same principles to apple & pear trees, which can now be pruned to maintain their size and shape, but always start with any dead, diseased or damaged braches first, then take out any that are crossing. Vines can also be pruned back hard now to within 2 buds of the current years’ growth.

Trees & shrubs have lost their leaves for winter now, so any remaining leaves can be gathered up and disposed of, or stored for leaf mould.

Root cuttings can also be taken at this time of year, especially from plants such as Phlox or Acanthus. Choose a healthy root that is about pencil thickness, take a short length between 5-10cm, and pot into multipurpose compost. Store in a sheltered position over winter, & by spring it should be putting on root growth ready for the new season – hey presto more plants for free.

Now is also the time to gather brightly coloured stems and berries to decorate the house over the festive season. Holly & Ivy are traditional seasonal decorations, but you can also use birch or willow stems, dogwoods and yew all make attractive displays. And don’t forget to decorate your garden too – a few well placed baubles and fairy lights in amongst the trees & shrubs brings some extra colour to the garden to make it more festive.
