Spring is in full swing and I’ve become a bit obsessed watching the progress of a flowering vine we planted last summer as it charges across a trellis on the back fence. You can almost feel the energy in the air as trees and shrubs leaf up and put on a show. We’ve also spruced up our small back deck and reset for more time outdoors – and it feels so good! This issue celebrates peak spring, with great ideas for making the most of your garden and available outdoor space, no matter how much room you have. Set aside time to plant the herbs, vegies and salads your household enjoys for starters... Homegrown bounty comes with so many

benefits: the satisfaction of nurturing and harvesting a crop, whether from a plot or pot, plus the health and financial rewards. And don’t miss our guide to planning and maintaining your dream deck (page 55). We’re keen to help you extract maximum enjoyment from the longer days that lie ahead.

DIY GARDEN MURAL

Turn a dull corrugated metal fence or wall into a landscape feature like Workshop member @HarrietArthur did. Start with a clean surface, use tape to mask off sections, then paint the big blocks of colour. Add the detail and seal with clear exterior varnish. Wow!

Cast a spooky spell over your front yard this Halloween by repurposing common garden supplies for the night! Wrap a cone-shaped climbing plant frame in solar fairy lights, remove the lining from a wire hanging basket and upturn it over the top, securing with cable ties. Cut an old white sheet to size – the tattier the better – to drape over, then stick black felt eyes and a ghoulish gaping mouth in place with craft glue. Now that your ghost has taken shape, thread fishing line through the sheet and hanging basket at the centre of the head and back up, tie to keep the sheet in place, then either trim for a standing ghost, or leave a long hanging loop for ‘floating’ phantoms. When the witching hours are over, snip off the fishing line and cable ties to return the basket and frame to gardening duties – until next year’s fright night.

Feed roses with a slow-release fertiliser and pick often to encourage more flowers. In humid climates, watch out for black spot and powdery mildew on the leaves – and spray thoroughly with a fungicide if present. Apply a wetting agent to lawns, pots and garden beds to ensure every drop of water is absorbed into the soil or potting mix.

With plenty of shapes, sizes, colours and flavours, there’s a tomato to suit all tastes. Fine in pots or garden beds.

To lay turf, kill weeds, spread top soil and wetting agent then apply a turf starter. Lay turf in brick pattern; water in well and often over the next 4-6 weeks. Don’t walk on or mow lawn until established.

Clay soil drains poorly and is not ideal for growing most plants. Improve by adding gypsum and building up the organic matter in the soil with compost and aged manures. Spread mulch over garden beds to help keep soil warm, conserve water and suppress weeds. Ideal around vegie seedlings – and it’s time to put in the three below now.

The vast array of new pots available in store offers endless possibilities for the plant-loving home decorator. Whether you are a fan of trailing foliage or sculptural succulents, every plant looks its best in a complementary pot. Bunnings garden decor buyer Anna Safaryan says there is a wide range of ‘cache’ pots (without a drainage hole) to choose from, in styles ranging from painted terracotta to on-trend fluted vessels. Colours range from neutrals to warm pinks through to stronger greens. “Have fun with a mix of colours and textures and use stands to create space-saving vertical layers,” says Anna.

Bespoke beauty

Looking to transform your home? It’s Possible™ to dream big with Hardie™ exterior cladding

Everyone’s dream home will look a little different, but the Hardie™ Architectural Collection of exterior cladding gives you the freedom to design a home from the ground up without compromise. The curated collection features a huge range of finishes, giving you endless design possibilities to suit your personal style, while the industryleading Hardie™ fibre cement ensures long-lasting beauty.

DESIGNER STYLE

Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding is the newest addition to the Hardie™ Architectural Collection, boasting sophisticated simplicity and subtle texture that epitomises modern minimalism. The texture transforms with light and proximity, creating a crisp, smooth appearance from a distance, but unexpectedly tactile on a closer look. It also pairs beautifully with other cladding profiles from the collection – for example, in this new build (pictured), it was married with Axon™ Cladding for vertical contrast.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

A knockdown rebuild was the clear choice for this dark and dated brick home. The new build is clad in Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding, paired with complementary Axon™ Cladding

James Hardie 3600mm x 1200mm Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding, I/N: 0444694.

Your partner in great design, Hardie™ cladding solutions are versatile enough to help you achieve the look you want. Hardie™ fibre cement cladding also gives you the freedom to stretch your architectural muscles without compromise – and without blowing the budget. For example, on this build, the recessed window effect would have been tricky and expensive to achieve with masonry.

BUILT TO LAST

Made from Hardie™ fibre cement, Hardie™ exterior cladding is built for tough Australian conditions. It’s ready for what life throws at it, allowing you to love where you live longer. All Hardie™ Architectural Collection products are resistant to damage from moisture and termites, and are deemed non-combustible in accordance with the National Construction Code.

Just like fashion, paint colour trends change with the seasons. While no-one wants to repaint their entire house every year, small changes can keep your home looking current for little effort and outlay. Here’s what we’ll see this summer and beyond, and how to work the colours into your home.

Trend alert

The overarching theme is warmth as we seek nurturing spaces, says Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. “We’re seeing fewer pastels and brights,” she says. “The colours are more muted this year, with palettes dominated by rich, warm neutrals like reddish browns, brownbased pinks, olive greens and muted blues.”

26 bunnings.com.au | bunnings | bunnings | bunnings | bunningswarehouseaustralia
Exterior walls painted in Dulux Rustic Wagon Photography Brigid Arnott; (centre top) Lisa Cohen, styling Bree Leech/ Dulux Australia; (opposite top) Kaboodle Kitchen; (opposite below) Bureaux/Elsa Young. Paint colours may vary on application.

More than ever, we’re romanced by the natural world. Taubmans colour specialist Fiona Dawson says the biophilic trend is emerging. “To ‘bring the outside in’, play with different shades of green, plus blues and dusty pinks reminiscent of sunsets and sunrises,” she says.

New heights

White has long been considered compulsory for ceilings, but painting the ‘fifth wall’ in colour can transform a room, creating a cocooning effect. “Go with a lighter colour on the ceiling and darker on the walls, or one colour on both,” suggests Andrea. “The beauty of ceilings is they mainly only get diffused light, so even if you use the same colour, it will still look a little different.”

Take it further by painting all woodwork –maybe even the furniture – the same shade. ‘Colour drenching’ is where a single colour is applied across multiple surfaces, explains interior designer Charlotte Minty (@charlotte minty_interiordesign). “This is a cost-effective way to get a high-end look,” she says. “It can be used to great effect in smaller spaces, such as hallways and powder rooms.”

Starring stripes

The antithesis of colour drenching is the feature wall, but there’s still space for this decorating staple, especially if you give it a stripy twist! “Stripes look amazing and add such a fun element to a room. Using good-quality painter’s tape, you can set up the wall and paint alternating shades of colour,” says Fiona. “This is especially loved for kids’ bedrooms.” Pinstripe or chunky, horizontal or vertical, on one wall alone or even taken to the ceiling, there’s more than one way to experiment with stripes.

For a fast feature wall, try stripes! Then enhance the effect using the same colour in furniture and accessories

Ceiling and trims in Dulux Lexicon Quarter, walls in Decoration Blue, planter in Poached Be inspired to use colour to create a statement kitchen – this one combines Kaboodle Kitchen Berry Blue with rich Paprika and pink Candy Floss

Easing into colour

Lovers of white needn’t dive straight into the boldest hues. Charlotte Minty advises a move towards warmer whites as a gentle transition. “Explore tones of taupe, ivory or sand,” she says. “The change might be perceived as subtle, but the results can be transformational.”

As you gain confidence, Andrea Lucena-Orr suggests starting in more private rooms: “The bedroom is a personal space – people won’t be going in and judging! If you want to use a darker colour, the fact that you’re mainly in there at night makes this an easier choice.”

Your home’s architecture can influence paint decisions, with the style of your home inspiring a particular interior palette – such as retro tones in a mid-century house or nautical blues in a Hamptons-style build.

Trending colours are not just for walls –upcycling furniture with paint is a low-risk way to experiment. “Bringing in trend colours could be as simple as a single element, like bedside tables or a coffee table, or even a frame on your favourite artwork,” says Andrea. “It doesn’t have to be a big change – those small volumes of colour add up to the sense that there’s something new and exciting happening.”

A fresh spray

You can achieve amazing results with any DIY paint project – whether it’s repainting a room, delivering a finer finish to upcycled furniture or updating your deck and walls. Wagner paint sprayers are easy to use and give you a professionalquality finish on all your DIY paint jobs.

CORDLESS FREEDOM

For smaller projects like upcycling furniture, the Wagner Flexio W600 Cordless is a handy sprayer when electricity is either hard to access, or you just want to work without cords. It’s powered by a Bosch 18V battery and comes with two attachments: an i-Spray 1.3L pot for coating walls or ceilings and the standard 800ml pot for coating furniture where a smaller, round spray pattern for finer finishes is required. The unit has an innovative brushless motor with five LED operating air-flow settings that can perfectly apply a variety of materials, from thin to thick acrylic coatings. Simply adjust the convenient soft-touch buttons to increase or decrease the air volume.

FENCES, DECKS AND MORE

Give your tired fence a quick refresh using a lightweight spray gun. The Wagner Fence & Deck Sprayer is ideal for outdoor painting and comes with a larger 1.4L pot and a separate 460W turbine motor to provide fatigue-free spraying – and to help you complete your project up to 10 times faster than painting with a brush! No matter what’s on your to-do list, the products and accessories within the Wagner Click & Paint range, suitable for the W600 and Fence & Deck Sprayer, will allow you to achieve it with ease and produce a stunning surface finish.

FOR LARGER PROJECTS

The powerful and affordable Wagner Control Pro 150 Airless Sprayer is ideal for medium to larger projects, such as internal rooms or weatherboards. Its 5.5L paint hopper can handle water or oil-based paints, while its airless HEA technology ensures up to 55 per cent less overspray*. The feathered spray pattern delivers a smooth overlapped finish, and lower trigger pull force minimises user fatigue. A range of tip sizes that adjust paint flow is available.

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. *Tested: 1450psi with HEA 517 Tip compared with a 517 Trade Tip at 2175psi. When painting, always wear safety equipment (eye protection and mask) and ensure the room is well ventilated. Check the weather forecast: if rain is imminent, delay exterior painting, and avoid painting in very hot or very cold conditions. Plan to paint when it’s cool and shady, as paint may dry too quickly in direct sunlight, leaving brush marks and an uneven finish. Keep all paint and chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.

PRE-CHRISTMAS SPRUCE UP

Whether you’re jumping on a colour trend or brushing on a fresh coat of white, paint is the go-to solution for making your home look tidy and well loved. Before family and friends descend for the entertaining season (and before it gets too hot to raise a roller), give your home a new look. Come on in Painting the front door is a one-day project that pays enormous dividends. “It’s the first thing people see as they enter your property, so it’s a great welcoming device,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr.

Metal makeover From stair railings to outdoor furniture and even the clothesline, metal surfaces around your home can start to look shabby.

“The White Knight Rust Guard range treats rust and protects your metal surfaces from future corrosion,” says Fiona Dawson. Rust Guard can also be tinted any Taubmans colour.

Pot luck Refresh existing pots or planters for your front porch. “Painting pots in current-trend colours is a really nice way to keep your home updated,” says Andrea.

Tablescaping Use your brush on other decor objects. “Paint old candlestick holders or lamp bases, or go to the op shop to collect pre-loved vases and trinkets for painting,” says Andrea. This is an inexpensive way to add eye-catching accents to a room, or to customise a Christmas table.

WEEKEND WONDERS

FROM SPEEDY DIYS TO A WORKING BEE, A FRESH NEW LOOK FOR YOUR KITCHEN OR BATHROOM COULD BE JUST A DAY AWAY

There are lots of ways to give your hardestworking rooms an update without breaking the bank – a good spring clean might even be enough to have your kitchen and bathroom looking reborn! But if you need to up the ante with a bigger revamp, here are some top ideas to consider.

PLAN IT MINI RENOVATIONS 20
bunnings.com.au | bunnings | bunnings | bunnings | bunningswarehouseaustralia 33 Photography Kaboodle Kitchen. If renting, have any changes you want to make approved by your landlord before you go ahead.

KITCHEN COOL

Bring the hub of your home into the now

1 Paint the walls

A new colour equals highimpact change. Try a feature wall or even a whole new room using a specialist paint like Dulux Wash & Wear +Plus Kitchen & Bathroom. Update sunny spaces with cool tones like mid-blue or pistachio, or warm a south-facing room with golden or clay-brown shades.

2 Swap out handles

Replacing polished chrome handles with a matt black or brushed brass finish can instantly elevate a space, suggests Giorgia Manenti of Kaboodle Kitchen. “If you really want to make a statement, explore unique shapes and materials for hardware options,” she says. Check the screw holes of your new handles align with the old to make it a seamless DIY job.

3 Kit it out

Improving storage is a smart move, says Giorgia: “Retrofitting wireware systems such as pull-out

pantries and rotating corner baskets will help improve the functionality of cabinetry.” Internal organisers make drawers less of a rummage-fest, while labelling pretty containers turns drygoods storage into a thing of beauty.

4Beautify the benchtop

Revamping sizeable surfaces has a big impact. Oiled timber benchtops can be sanded to remove or minimise stains and scratches, and re-oiled for a like-new look. Laminate ones can be transformed to a contemporary, granite-like finish with a specialist product like RustOleum’s benchtop coating system.

5Revamp cabinetry

A great way to refresh your kitchen is to update door or drawer fronts, suggests Giorgia.

ABOVE Pull-out baskets tidy up shelves and improve access to pantry items

“If you want to liven up your space, opt for a cheerful colour.” Two-tone kitchens are having a design moment, so only refreshing the wall cabinets is even simpler. Replacing Kaboodle doors or drawer fronts can be DIY but turn to a tradie if you’re not too handy.

6Open up the space

Small updates can go a long way. “Simply removing one or two wall cabinets and replacing with open-shelf cabinets or floating shelves will help create a designer look,” says Giorgia. A quick alternative can be to remove the doors and fixings on a wall cupboard. Stylist Tilly Roberts (@tillroberts) suggests painting the inside of the cupboard a contrasting colour to add unexpected interest. ROJECT

7

Tackle the f loor

Revitalise worn timber boards by sanding and recoating. For an on-trend matt finish try Feast Watson Timber Floor Wax, or use their ‘Black Japan’ Timber Floor Stain & Varnish for a gorgeous deep base to contrast with light cabinetry. If you’re renting, budget-friendly vinyl squares bring an engaging, retro look. “These can be stuck straight over the top of a level floor,” says Tilly Roberts.

8Update a splashback

A small area with big impact, a splashback can be re-tiled for a cost-effective style lift. “With a fresh splashback, you have the opportunity to infuse new colours, patterns and textures,” says Giorgia Manenti. Interesting shapes or patterns are wonderfully eye-catching. For an even more economical change, turn to tile paint – but first check suitability if the splashback is behind a cooktop.

9Get new appliances

Think about replacing ancient appliances for a streamlined, modern look. New models also tend to be more energy efficient. Check the energy star rating – the more stars, the better. Electric models are often simpler to replace, saving on tradie installation costs down the track.

10 Love your LEDs

Call a sparkie to change halogen downlights for energy-efficient LEDs to help save on power bills, and take the opportunity to update kitchen lighting. “It’s important to have efficient task lighting in areas where you’ll be preparing and cooking meals,” says Giorgia. A few options: pendants over the island bench; downlights under wall cupboards; LED strips around the island base. Have different areas on individual switches so you can, for example, switch off the lights over messy work zones while you’re entertaining.

BATHROOM BLITZ

Breathe new life into your bathing zone

1

Luxe it up

Some simple purchases can make an old bathroom feel young again. “Invest in a few beautiful bathroom items, such as a soap dispenser, toilet paper holder and bath mat. There are so many designer brands covering this area now,” says Tilly. Consider a heated towel ladder for warm, dry towels and to help combat humidity. You can have a hardwired model installed by a sparkie or simply go for a plug-in freestanding rail – especially great for renters.

2

Step up your shower

An easy fix to bring new energy to your morning wake-up experience is to replace the showerhead – often all that’s needed is to unscrew the existing one and pop on a shiny new rose. Check out the Flexispray range.

3

Do away with dirt

Dingy grout can make a whole bathroom look tired, and sometimes refreshing it is beyond a good scrub. Try touching up the lines with a grout pen or grout paint, or use a specialist grout removal tool to dig out the old and reapply new. Also consider changing the colour for a whole new look. Don’t forget to renew grotty sealant at the same time.

“From a stylistic perspective, lighting will help to dictate the ambience of any room”

4

Ditch the daggy seat

Plastic toilet seats tend to yellow over time – a new one will make the space feel instantly fresher. Consider these buying tips from Luke Di Michiel at Caroma: “Determine the shape of your toilet seat and check the type of seat fixing. Measure the key set-out dimensions, including the distance between the fixing holes, to ensure a best match between the pan and the seat.”

5Plant a pot

“Add some greenery through trailing plants,” suggests Tilly Roberts. Plants help to soften a bathroom’s hard surfaces and some can also help improve the air quality. Try setting a pretty pot in a plant stand or suspending a trio of small pots from the ceiling – ensure you choose the correct

Bold tapware can help to create a luxe new look. And if your space lacks a window, consider a skylight. Ask about installation at the Bunnings Special Orders Desk

anchors for your ceiling type. Popular trailing plants for bathrooms include devil’s ivy and maidenhair ferns.

6 Update the walls

Replace dated wall tiles with textured, stone-look, geometric or Moroccan-style tiles. Or clad the walls with wet area ‘VJ’ lining boards for a Hamptons feel, anywhere except the shower zone. Skilled DIY-ers can tackle most tiling and cladding, but if the job entails fiddling with waterproofing, plumbing or electrics, you’ll need to call in tradies.

7 Change the vanity

Timber, laminate or melamine cabinets can be painted using a specialist coating like the Dulux Renovation Range. If the unit is past it, replace it, but adjusting

plumbing needs professional help. The latest looks, says Luke, are strong geometric forms: “These continue to be popular across basins, with round and rectangular forms dominating.”

8Tweak tapware

Say goodbye to old taps if they drip and waste water. You’ll need a plumber, but maintaining pipes in the same place keeps costs down. For longevity, pick classic chrome or brushed metal. “Traditional pin and paddle mixer tapware still dominates, with the simple forms allowing the increasing range of colour finishes to stand out,” says Luke.

9Add storage

Keep surfaces clear and clutter-free with extra storage. Add a freestanding unit in an unused corner, tuck baskets under a wallhung vanity for towels or spare loo rolls, or hang a wall cabinet. If space is a challenge, choose a shallow one or ask a tradie to explore whether it’s possible to recess a deeper cupboard into the wall.

10Lighten up

If the room is windowless, check with a builder if you can bring in natural light via a skylight. New light fittings, suitable for bathrooms, can improve light delivery and add a decorative note – wall sconces either side of the mirror are practical and pretty. Swapping soft white globes for bright white can lift the room for a small outlay

DISCOVER THE MANY BENEFITS OF GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD

Nurturing, harvesting and preparing your own produce is inherently fulfilling – and helps to ease grocery bills. While a large-scale vegetable patch is only a dream for those of us short on time and space, there are big gains to be had from small plots and pots. Just be smart about the fruit and vegetables you choose to grow.

Grow smart

Deciding what to grow is your first step –and the good news is there are lots of easyto-grow vegies and herbs to choose from, says Yates horticulturist Angie Thomas.

You also need to consider how much growing space you have. While you may really love cauliflower, in the two or three months that it takes you to nurture three cauliflowers from seedling to harvest, you could grow and harvest three crops of bok choy that will stretch much further than three or four meals. Or get the best of both worlds and interplant the space between your slower-growing crops with faster-growing greens, such as kale, silverbeet, baby spinach and mesclun lettuce.

If you’re gardening in a small space, Angie suggests looking for compact varieties of tomatoes that don’t need staking and spacesaving root vegies like beetroot, radishes and baby carrots. “Climbing vegies like beans and cucumbers are also ideal, as they can be grown up a trellis or tripod and take up very little room,” she says.

Don’t forget about the importance of adding flavour to your food, either. Fresh herbs are simple to grow inside and out, in garden beds or in pots. “Add a burst of flavour and fragrance with herbs like basil, chives, parsley and coriander that don’t require a lot of growing space and can be picked over several months,” suggests Angie.

Soil solutions

As long as you choose an area that gets at least six hours of full sun a day, you can grow food. If you’re starting a new vegetable patch in existing garden beds, remove the weeds, add compost and sheep pellets and start planting. You can also convert an area of lawn into a productive vegetable garden: use a spade to scruff off the top of the turf, turn the soil lightly, incorporate compost and well-aged manure and plant directly into that.

However, if you have a heavy clay soil or your available growing space is concrete or paved, raised beds are a great option. Timber raised beds* may cost a bit to construct and fill, so if you’re trying to save money, opt for more affordable steel or composite models that are available for less than $60. They should be filled with quality bagged or bulk garden soil, says Angie Thomas, as this will have the best structure for growing plants, including good

LEFT Colourful poppies can help attract pollinators to your garden to help with fertilisation

aeration and water- and nutrient-holding capacity. “Before planting, blend some compost or pelletised chicken manure into the soil,” says Angie. “This adds valuable organic matter and provides the new plants with gentle, slowrelease organic nutrients as they establish.”

Potted edibles

Most vegies can be grown in pots but make sure you choose the right-sized container. Angie advises using medium to large pots with good drainage holes and a premium standard potting mix. “Potted plants also need a regular supply of moisture and nutrients, so keep the potting mix moist and feed every one to two weeks with a liquid fertiliser,” she says. “Vegies and herbs that are perfect for pots include leafy greens like lettuce, rocket and silverbeet, compact varieties of tomatoes, capsicums and chillies, dwarf beans, spring onions and basil, mint, coriander and parsley.”

Seed fund

When you compare the cost of a packet containing 100 or more seeds to the price of a six-pack of seedlings, it’s clear that growing from seed is more cost-effective. You just need to be prepared to put in the work of nurturing plants from seed.

Each seed variety has different requirements, says Bianca Boman from Mr Fothergill’s, so for successful germination, it’s important to follow the instructions on the packet.

“Key conditions for seeds to grow include soil temperature and moisture,” says Bianca. “Spring varieties like tomatoes, capsicums and chillies require warmer soil temperatures to germinate. If you are starting them early, you might want to place your growing container on a heat pad to regulate the soil temperature. Growing in a mini greenhouse can help keep the moisture consistent.” Once germinated, place seedlings in bright indirect light all

REAP THE REWARDS

Growing your own vegies and herbs is immensely satisfying. It’s a great way to foster a deeper connection with nature and to teach children about food origins and nutrition – plus it can also save you money, especially when you start from seed.

The sky’s the limit when choosing seeds – you can grow anything from ordinary spinach and lettuce to exotic varieties that you won’t find in the supermarket. But to get the best value for money, Bianca Boman from Mr Fothergill’s recommends growing leafy greens and herbs you use lots of like parsley or basil, soft fruits that have a short shelf life like strawberries, and vegies that produce ongoing harvests over the growing season, such as tomatoes. For just a few dollars you can grow a wealth of healthy produce for your table from a single packet of seeds, so the cost savings can be beneficial.

“Parsley is particularly impressive as it is biennial – you harvest the plants over a period of two years,” says Bianca. “Tomato is also a generous producer and may yield up to 40 fruit per plant, while cucumber can produce up to 10 fruit per plant.”*

day. “But never put seedlings in direct sunlight, especially if in a greenhouse, as you may roast them!” she warns. Beans, peas, sweet corn, silverbeet and coriander are among the easiest to germinate. “For a beginner –and for kids – bush beans, cherry tomatoes and parsley are super-easy to grow as well, since they don’t require much care and suffer little disease or pest attack,” says Bianca.

The only way is up

If your available growing area is a sunny patio or balcony, take advantage of vertical space. Cucumbers, beans, sugar snap peas and different berry vines can all be trained along strings, trellises or growing frames. You can also grow salad greens, herbs and strawberries in vertical planters with self-watering systems. Some are designed to be attached to a wall or you could try freestanding models in frames.

Discover the beauty and flavour of our heirloom pumpkins

Get your pumpkins planted before Halloween to ensure an abundant harvest next autumn.

Tips for success

1. Pumpkins are easy-togrow vegetables that can be grown as a ground cover, trained up a trellis or planted in containers.

2. Plant in a raised mound or pot. Two pumpkins will happily grow in 1m2.

3. Allow room for the vine to spread or train up a trellis.

4. Water the roots and not the leaves. This will produce healthy plants with less chance of fungal infections and disease.

5. Harvest pumpkins when the vine dries but leave a stalk to extend length of storage.

6. Short on space? Grow your pumpkins in pots or borrow your nature strip or verge to maximise your harvest.

Fill the fruit bowl

“It’s wonderful to have a homegrown supply of fruit like apples, pears, peaches, nectarines and citrus,” says Angie Thomas. Even just one fruit tree will help lower your grocery bill. And you don’t need as much space as you might think to grow fruit. “Many fruit trees can grow in raised beds or pots,” says Angie. “Look for dwarf varieties that don’t grow too big.”

Fruit trees need at least six hours of sun a day and well-draining soil, she advises. Feeding is important, too. “Fruit trees will be more productive if fertilised regularly. Use a citrus and fruit fertiliser, which contains the right blend of nutrients to promote healthy leaf growth, as well as lots of flowers and fruit,” says Angie. Remember to check plant tags for pollinating information – for example an apple tree may need a pollinating partner.

Beauty and the bees

Add the Fiskars Happy Bee Set to your toolkit to keep the bees buzzing around your beautiful blooms

The sound of bees humming among the flowers is one of the most joyous signs that spring is here – and that your garden is acting as a haven for these beneficial little insects. As one of the world’s key pollinators, bees help promote biodiversity and ensure that the crops we rely upon for food survive.

Sadly, bee populations have been declining, but you can do your bit for your local bee community by making thoughtful choices in your garden, such as avoiding using pesticides, trimming your lawn less frequently and growing bee-friendly plants. Put simply, bees love flowers, particularly natives like bottlebrush and grevillea, and aromatic florals such as lavender.

The Happy Bee Set from Fiskars can help you on your way to a flower-filled plot. Consisting of a Solid Seed Planting Trowel and a Solid Floral Pruner, the

set gives you two key tools to help place, propagate and nurture bee-friendly plants in your space. Use the lightweight Planting Trowel, with its handy soil-depth measure and detachable dibber and widger, to help sow seeds, transplant delicate seedlings, and pop cuttings into pots to grow on, ready for planting out.

Then, keep your flowers flourishing with the Floral Pruner, perfect for deadheading and light pruning to promote healthy growth in your plants. This easy-to-use tool has precision-ground steel blades to keep them sharp for repeated use, soft-grip handles and a stem stripper in different sizes.

Check with your local Bunnings store to find out which bee-attracting plants grow well in your area, and help your community’s bees thrive on a beautiful, fragrant floral banquet.

Choosing the right mix for potted plants may be the difference between good results and great results. Each bag of potting mix contains the right balance of ingredients to supply air, water and nutrients to support plant growth. But not all potting mixes are created equal. Some hold more moisture while others drain freely. So, which is the right mix for you? Here’s what you need to know.

Standard practice

When choosing a potting mix, look for the Australian Standard logo, easily identified by five ticks on the bag, says horticulturist Melissa King of Scotts Osmocote. “The Standard ensures the mix is manufactured to a consistent quality for successful plant growth,” she says. “Among other things, it ensures the mix you are buying is free from pests and weed seeds, is well drained, re-wets easily and has a suitable pH.”

Every bag sold in Bunnings meets the Australian Standard, says Ash Makin, Bunnings garden care buyer. It falls into two grades: red or black ticks. “The black-tick grade is a regular potting mix and does not contain any fertilisers, so you will need to add that separately to keep your plants thriving and healthy,” explains Ash. The red-tick grade, or premium-quality mix, typically contains wetting agents and fertilisers to boost plant growth over a certain period, before you need to supplement.

Choose your type

“General potting mixes are good for growing most plants,” says Ash. “But some groups of plants, like orchids, natives, fruiting trees, cacti and succulents, have specific growth or nutritional requirements and will grow better in a specialist potting medium.”

Orchids, cacti and succulents need exceptionally good drainage. “Most orchids are epiphytes, so they naturally grow on trees or rocks with lots of air flowing around the roots,” says Melissa. “Therefore, a quality orchid mix is very coarse and airy.” Cacti and succulent potting mix is formulated with coarse grains to allow free drainage.

If growing fruit or vegetables, Melissa recommends buying mixes

MATCH THE PLANT TO THE MIX

specifically made for them. “These have added goodies to bring out the best in your kitchen garden,” she says. While you can use a regular mix, these specially formulated mixes contain supplements to support healthy growth. “Vegetable and herb mixes are boosted with iron and calcium to encourage lush, deep-green leaves and assist in the prevention of common problems such as blossom end rot,” says Melissa.

You will also find a mix for acid-loving plants like azaleas, gardenias and camellias that perform best in lower pH conditions. Natives like banksias and grevilleas need a low-phosphorous mix.

Seed-raising and propagating mixes are made up of fine-grade composted bark with added perlite or coir peat. This allows for better contact with the seed, creating ideal conditions for germination. While you can sow directly into a general potting mix, these contain larger particles and air pockets that may impact your success.

DIYers will love the five different spray patterns offered with a simple twist of a dial

Dawn of a new spray

One can, five ways to spray paint! It’s now easier than ever

Just imagine reviving and reinventing all the tired decor pieces in your home with just one product. Spray paint makes this process easy and speedy, leaving a perfectly smooth finish – but leaders in the spray space, Rust-Oleum, have found a way to make the humble spray can even better.

Rust-Oleum Custom Spray 5 in 1 features an innovative new nozzle that allows you to choose the spray pattern to suit your project, delivering greater precision and control, and the power to get your project done right.

PAINT BY NUMBERS

Rust-Oleum Custom Spray 5 in 1 gives users unprecedented control through its unique delivery system, which lets you choose between five different spray patterns in one can.

Start by assessing your project; are you spraying a smaller item with fine details, or a larger piece that requires more paint and power? Then twist the dial on the nozzle to one of the five settings and spray your way to success.

ONE DIAL, FIVE SPRAY PATTERNS: Unlimited ways to get your project done right!

1 High output

This is your power setting, releasing a higher volume of paint. Use it to conquer larger pieces, fast –to reinvent furniture or give your skateboard a new look!

2 Standard

This is the traditional spray pattern familiar to regular spray paint users. Start here before playing with the other settings. It’s still the best setting for a wide range of projects, from lamps to vases, flower pots and more.

3 Low output

Spraying a lower volume of paint, this setting offers more precision when painting fine details. Use it for small items or fiddly pieces, like

metal railings, an ornamental bird cage or a door knocker. Or switch to ‘low output’ when finishing the edges and finer details of larger projects – it’s great for preventing drips and overspray, giving you a better finish.

4 Vertical fan

Use this spray pattern to get even coverage on wide surfaces. Sweep steadily from side to side to get a professional finish in no time at all! This setting is ideal for larger items like wide shelving or a bench seat.

5 Horizontal fan

This setting gives you the extra height you need to tackle tall items, like doors or large picture frames, in one smooth sweep. Spray up and down for even coverage and a professional finish to be proud of.

YES, YOU CAN

Now the only question is what to spray next! For flexibility, spray paint is unbeaten, able to be applied to everything from furniture to doors, light fittings to window frames.

Available in an earthy colour palette – which brings a sense of calm to any space – and with multiple finishes, the new Rust-Oleum Custom Spray 5 in 1 can be applied to timber, metal and most common surfaces, transforming once-dull pieces with a fresh coat of long-lasting colour that’s resistant to chipping, fading and dulling.

READY, DECK, GO!

HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO START PLANNING AND DESIGNING YOUR PERFECT OUTDOOR SPACE

Adeck is an endlessly useful addition to your home and the more thinking you do upfront, the better the results will be. Designing a deck requires careful planning and consideration to create a great outdoor space. Read on for some planning essentials to help you nail your design.

Safety first

Your deck may need to support anything from a couple of armchairs to 30 people dancing to Nutbush City Limits, so it must be strong enough to cope. In the planning stages it’s important to check the deck meets the requirements of the Building Code of Australia and relevant Australian Standards, says DIY specialist Natasha Dickins (littleredindustries. com). “Decks more than a metre high require a balustrade, steps over a certain size need a handrail and you may need an engineer or qualified builder if pinning it to the house,” advises Natasha. “When choosing materials, consider the spacings and bushfire ratings in your area.” Confirm your plans with a licensed professional before you get started.

Material looks

For your decking boards, weigh up factors such as cost, maintenance and durability. Timber is often the first port of call. Pine is a good option if you intend to paint your deck. Merbau will give you a beautiful natural timber look. If you let it age naturally it will turn grey, but if you prefer to keep a rich timber colour, you will need to oil or stain it each year.

Composite decking has come a long way from the original faketimber look, says Natasha. “It’s termite resistant and available in various bushfire attack levels,” she adds. “The biggest drawback is the initial cost compared with timber, but the trade-off is that it’s practically no maintenance and won’t rot or suffer from moisture damage.”

A third option is a fibre cement product like HardieDeck, which can give a smart, Hamptons-style look and is rot-, moisture- and termiteresistant. HardieDeck is also noncombustible, making it a good choice in bushfire zones.

Each has pros and cons. Composite decking comes in a range of shades and even patterns. Composite boards tend to retain more heat than timber and the final appearance can’t be altered, says Natasha. “But with timber you can sand away surface scratches and change the finish when re-oiling or staining.” Timber and fibre cement decking need to be coated with a suitable product (such as an oil or stain) and will require regular refinishing.

PERMISSION, PLEASE!

Depending on where you live and the project size, you may need to apply for a permit to add a deck. In Victoria, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, a permit is required to build a deck.

In Tasmania, it depends on size, while in New South Wales a permit may not be needed under exempt development rules, but the deck must be less than 25sqm, no more than a metre off the ground and be positioned behind the house and at least 900mm from the boundary fence*. Other regulations, including whether you live in a bushfire-prone area, will also come into play. Every local planning division is different, so check with your local council.

Design decisions

The size and shape of the deck depends on a number of factors, including the space available and whether you’re aiming to cover a particular area, advises carpenter Thomas Taylor (thomastaylor carpentry.com). “The shape depends on what you’re using it for, such as entertainment, an access walkway or storage,” he says. For entertaining, for example, you’ll need enough room for a dining table and chairs, and at least a metre clearance on all sides for movement around the area. Assess what activities you intend to use the deck for and plan the layout accordingly. The last thing you want is a design that isn’t functional.

Location, location

Consider factors like direct sunlight, views and privacy. “Generally, for an entertainment area, it’s about easy access and to enjoy the surrounding garden,” says Thomas. “The more your deck is out of the elements, the longer it will last,” he adds. If possible, north-facing is a good option as it will give you winter

sun, but shade in summer is important –consider a pergola or a roof system that can be opened and closed to also protect against poor weather. Outdoor blinds are handy for a west-facing space that gets late afternoon sun, while screening can create a cosy sense of enclosure as well as provide privacy.

Build on the foundations

Decide whether you’re going to build onto a concrete slab or use stumps. The most cost-effective way to build the substructure, especially over uneven or sloping ground, is with concreted posts, says Natasha. “If you have an existing concrete slab, there are some great products to make the job faster, such as foundation blocks or pedestal feet that are simply set out for each post,” she adds. “A prefab subfloor system like Good Times Decking is like putting together a flatpack design with adjustable feet and is great for first-time builders installing a low-to-the-ground deck.”

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR DECK

GIVE YOUR ALFRESCO TIMBER FLOORING SOME REGULAR TLC TO KEEP ITS GOOD LOOKS

Slipping, splinters and tripping over loose boards are all things that could ruin a perfectly good evening on your deck, so it’s important to keep it in good repair. Plus, of course, a damaged deck could mean it has lost structural integrity and may be in need of urgent repair. Maintaining your deck is essential to uphold its appearance and durability. For a trouble-free deck, commit to a regular annual routine. Here’s how.

Do a deck check

Start with a thorough inspection, including the supports and joists underneath, looking for any decay or signs of termite damage. Check for damaged or rotten boards, loose nails or screws. If you do find any damaged boards, replace them with new ones or repair them using suitable fillers. Tighten or replace any loose nails or screws. Make sure to include the railing in your overview. Check if it is loose or showing signs of wear, and repair or replace it. If any renovations are beyond your DIY skills, call in the professionals.

Clean the sur face

Switch to clean and protect mode, says carpenter Thomas Taylor. “Generally, I look out for a build-up of moss and algae – this tells me it’s time to clean and recoat,” he says. “Or, splash

some water on the surface. If it absorbs quickly, it’s time to oil your deck.”

Maintaining a regular cleaning schedule is critical. This will help prevent dust, dirt and algae building up and making the deck slippery. Sweep the deck surface regularly to remove loose debris. Then mix a purpose-made deck cleaner, such as Cabot’s ‘Deck Clean’, with water as per the manufacturer’s instructions and scrub the deck using a brush to remove dirt, mould and stains. Rinse thoroughly with a hose or pressure washer – taking care not to apply too much pressure to avoid damaging the timber –and let it dry completely.

Buf f up the boards

If your deck hasn’t had any TLC for a while, or you want a complete change of finish, you may need to get out the sander. Focus on areas with splintered

pools

timber or previous finishes. However, if it’s in good condition and you’re recoating with the same product, you can often skip this step.

Pick your product

The three main coatings – oil, stain and paint –all give a different finish. Decking oil contains a small amount of pigment, explains Brenna Mathews of Cabot’s. It is designed to enhance the timber’s natural colour without hiding the grain. “A deck and exterior stain contains more pigment and is designed to change the colour of your timber,” says Brenna. Paint gives an opaque finish but, if using it, choose a decksuitable product, such as Cabot’s ‘Timbercolour’ Deck & Exterior Paint.

Oil vs water

Oils and stains are either water- or oil-based, but how to decide which one is right for you? “Water-based decking oils and stains both work by building a barrier on the surface to protect the timber from UV rays,” explains Brenna. “They’re more durable and generally have faster recoat times than oil-based products.”

In contrast, Brenna says oil-based decking oils and stains penetrate into the timber, leaving very little on the surface. They’re also a little less user friendly, requiring regular maintenance, longer dry times and

turps for clean-up. However, oil-based ones provide a more natural finish and offer excellent water repellency. If your deck receives ample sunlight and is prone to water exposure, an oil-based option may be more suitable.

Apply the coating

Once you’ve made your choice and done your prep, it’s time to hit the deck! Mask off any areas you don’t want coated in oil,

stain or paint, such as the walls of the house or a fence. Decant the coating into a decking bucket and use the recommended applicator for the product you’re using. Follow the grain of the timber, applying the product to two to four deck boards at a time. Allow to dry for the recommended time, then apply a second coat. Make sure you allow plenty of time for the finish to dry before walking on it. Job done!

HOW TO PAINT YOUR DECK

UPDATE TIMBER BOARDS WITH A FRESH COAT – IT’S EASY

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to smarten up that deck. A quick way to transform tired timber boards is to paint them! You can paint over a previously painted deck – or a new deck, like ours – but stained boards will need a complete sand back to bare timber so the paint adheres.

3 Scrub surface with a deck brush and deck cleaner (diluted to manufacturer’s instructions) to remove dirt, mould and stains. Rinse with a hose or pressure washer. Tip: Adjust the nozzle or pressure to avoid damaging timber. Allow deck to dry completely. Tape off railings or adjacent walls with painter’s tape.

4 Use a paint stirrer to mix the paint as per instructions. Pour into a paint tray then apply using a paintbrush on edges, corners and hard-to-reach areas. Use a roller to apply paint to the main surface of the deck, working in small sections and overlapping each stroke slightly. Leave to dry.

2 On new or previously painted boards, use a belt sander to sand down rough spots or splintered timber. This helps to improve the smoothness of the paint finish.

5 Apply a second coat of paint. When dry, carefully remove painter’s tape.

5 WAYS TO USE YOUR DECK

MAKE THIS VERSATILE SPACE THE CENTRE OF THE ACTION: JUST ADD FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES

Your deck is the perfect place to relax on warm days and balmy evenings or to host a gathering, but to make the most of it, consider other uses too. Why not turn it into a yoga or exercise studio? Or head out there on clear nights for a spot of stargazing? Here’s how to make the best use of this valuable outdoor area.

1

Get set for entertaining

Think beyond just a table and chairs to make your deck an inviting dining destination. Festoon lights provide pretty illumination and a sense of occasion, says stylist and interiors writer Jessica Bellef (@jessicabellef). “String them above the table to create a cosy, intimate atmosphere,” she says. Also, bring the space to life with greenery. “Large planters filled with lush leafy plants can add privacy and screen the area from the neighbours or the street,” says Jessica. “Choose pots that suit the style of your home and outdoor furniture for a cohesive look.”

2

Devise a cook zone

If feeding family and friends is your go-to for entertaining, think about investing in an outdoor kitchen. Set up a barbecue, sink, fridge and prep area – this will allow you to cook entirely outside

without having to run back into the house. A modular unit that includes some or all of these elements could be a simple addition, but when choosing the location, make sure you review safety aspects such as ventilation and proximity to any combustible elements. Also consider planting up pretty pots of herbs to have on hand for adding to your culinary masterpieces – they look beautiful, too!

Create a second living room

For a sumptuous outdoor lounge area, start with comfortable seating, says interior stylist Samantha Torrisi (@ess.creative). “Invest in outdoor sofas, chairs or sectionals with weather-resistant cushions to provide comfort and mimic the feeling of a living room,” she says. For cooler nights, an outdoor heater is invaluable. Lighting and outdoor candles will add ambience and allow you to enjoy the area into the evening. Take the styling to the next level to really give it the feel of a living space. “Bring in decorative elements like outdoor pillows, throw blankets, ottomans and large outdoor mirrors or artwork to enhance the living room vibe,” suggests Samantha. Pushed for space? Use an outdoor storage chest for extra seating as well as a place to stow cushions and throws.

3
A deck is the ideal platform for a comfortable and inviting alfresco sanctuary Photography Pernilla Wästberg/House of Pictures.

4

Set up for stargazing

Embrace the beauty of the night sky with a zone that lets you lie back in comfort. “A rug is especially useful for laying floor cushions on – it adds an extra layer under you for warmth. Add some soft blankets, throws and smaller cushions for cooler nights,” suggests Samantha. Lighting is important for moving around safely, but keep it to a minimum to help preserve the stargazing experience. “Dim, ambient lighting such as string lights or solar-powered lanterns will create a soft atmosphere,” says Samantha.

5 Plan a spot just for you

Indulge in your own fresh-air mini retreat for yoga practice, meditation or even a workout. To ensure you can use it regularly, go undercover. “Consider affixing a shade sail for protection from harsh direct sun," says Jessice. “A large freestanding cantilevered umbrella will provide both sun and rain cover.” Give the zone a sense of seclusion with garden screens or decorative panels so you can concentrate on your activity and chill out in private. “They are easy to install and will help you to instantly focus and relax,” explains Jessica. Include pots and planters stocked with fragrant herbs or flowers to engage your senses. “And add a water feature to harness the soothing effect of the sound of running water,” suggests Jessica.

SMART HOME

PLAY IT COOL

IT’S SET TO BE A HOT SUMMER, SO TAKE THE TIME AND PLAN NOW TO KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE

Words KYLIE JACKES

During summer your home should be a relaxing retreat from the heat. Help your household stay cool and safe with our guide to cooling options, plus tips to beat the heat affordably and sustainably.

Portable fans

In pedestal, floor, desk, industrial and tower styles, portable fans can be easily moved and positioned for maximum effect.

Floor and box styles are unobtrusive, inexpensive and work well in small seating and dining zones, boosting airflow just above floor level. Pedestal fans are hard to beat, if cost is a key factor, according to Arlec’s Jane Troiano. “Adjustable height and oscillation features can give them great coverage, and as they consume less electricity than airconditioners, it makes them an all-day option for air circulation within a room,” she says.

UPDATE IT BEAT THE HEAT
bunnings.com.au | bunnings | bunnings | bunnings | bunningswarehouseaustralia 67 Photography Lean Timms, styling Tilly Roberts. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

Tower fans are also budget-friendly and their space-saving design is ideal. They often have multiple speed settings, a timer and remote-control operation. So you can control the fan while in bed and set the timer to switch it off during the cooler part of the night. The blades are also typically encased, making them safer for young children.

Evaporative coolers

These work by passing air over watersoaked pads. They evaporate the water and cool the air blown out from the unit. Portable evaporative coolers don’t suit every environment, though. “They work best in hot conditions with low humidity,” adds Jane Troiano.

Ceiling fans

“AC ceiling fans operate using an alternating current motor, while DC fans use direct current, which is more efficient, quieter and allows fans to have a greater range of speeds,” says Jane. Other factors include fan size, number of blades, material and control options, such as remote, wall or via smart technology and an app. Ceiling fans are also a great way to boost the breeze in covered outdoor entertaining areas. Look for blades with ABS construction, which are durable and tropical rated.

Airconditioners

Split systems are the most popular type of airconditioner, with reverse-cycle models also able to warm your home in winter. Unlike fans, which simply move air, airconditioners provide more immediate and effective relief, as they work to cool the air temperature.

A key consideration is the unit size, as getting the capacity right can have an impact on efficiency and running costs. Factors such as your home’s location within Australia (tropical, temperate or cool zones), its orientation, room size, insulation and window placement will affect

When choosing ceiling fans, select models with summer/winter modes for year-round comfort

cooling needs. If you’re unsure what size airconditioning unit your home needs, Bunnings can provide a Measure and Quote service. Visit bunnings.com.au/air-conditioninginstallation for more information.

To run airconditioners efficiently, energyrating.gov.au advises setting the temperature a degree higher to save 5-10 per cent in power consumption. Program it to turn off when not needed and use it before extreme heat, so the unit doesn’t have to work as hard. When a permanent installation is not possible, portable ACs are an alternative for spot-cooling.

Only cool rooms you’re using and close the doors to seal in the cool air.

Close blinds and windows to shield against heat gain at the warmest part of the day.

Once the hottest part of the day is over, open up windows to draw in cooler evening air. Only use aircon for very hot days and try to rely on fans.

Rather than going ultra-low, set your airconditioner to a higher temperature and use a fan to circulate the cool air.

All ceiling fans must be installed by a licensed electrician

Are you equipped to save a life?

Fifty five Australians suffer a sudden cardiac arrest every day** at work, home or play – and, if they are not at a hospital, less than eight per cent may survive**. That’s more than 18,000 deaths a year.

n Automatic shock delivery, only if the defibrillator requires it

n Easily used by untrained bystanders

n User friendly visual and audio guides

n Metronome to assist CPR

n Weighs only 1.1kg

n High resistance to dust and water

n Durable carry case

n Suitable for use on adults and children over eight years old, who weigh more than 25kg

An untrained bystander using a nearby defibrillator within the first minute of sudden cardiac arrest may potentially bring the chance of survival rate up to 90 per cent**. As the majority of sudden cardiac arrests may occur away from larger facilities, defibrillators are vital for tradies, householders, clubs, places of worship, schools, grey nomads…

n Eight year warranty

n Combined battery/pads cartridge (four year life)

n No maintenance required

n Ongoing service and support

Dog vs lawn

If you have yellow patches on your otherwise perfect turf, it’s because the protein in your dog’s diet is excreted as nitrogen, which burns the grass.

THE CAT'S PYJAMAS

PLAY WITH PURPOSE

1 I am… Six years old, turning seven next month.

2 I live in… Forest Lodge, NSW, with Mum and with lots of visits from my grandma.

3 My preferred mode of transport is… My very comfy cat carrier.

4 I have a habit of… Waking Mum up at 4am every day to play.

5 My perfect day involves… Play, eat, groom, sleep, repeat.

6 My best friend is… My toy mouse, Jerry.

7 My favourite activity is… Running through my cat tunnel as fast as I can.

8 I show affection by… Cuddling up to Mum on the sofa and also watching sports with her, especially the tennis.

9 My favourite celebrity is… Puss in Boots.

Go shopping for a dog toy and you’ll be overwhelmed with choice. Should you choose a spiky ball or a squeaky stick? A soft toy or a tough treat puzzle? The answer all depends on the purpose of the toy.

If you’re looking to play with your dog, interactive toys that involve fetching or tugging, such as balls or ropes, are the way to go. These are great opportunities to bond with your dog.

For something to mentally stimulate your dog when you’re out (which will help address bad behaviour due to boredom), toys that gradually dispense treats and encourage chewing are the ones to consider. Chewing can help relieve anxiety in dogs, and some toys are also designed to help clean their teeth at the same time.

Soft toys can also work to reduce anxiety, especially in puppies, but even older dogs can derive comfort from carrying a favourite stuffed toy. Just make sure the toy is too big to be swallowed, and remove it if it becomes damaged.

Hours of fun

This moggy is a whirlwind, blitzing through her cat tunnel in record time 1 3

But there are steps that may help. Angie Thomas at Yates recommends keeping the lawn well watered. “A droughtstressed lawn will be more susceptible to damage,” she says. “Diluting the urine by watering the spot where the dog has been immediately afterwards can also help.”

Encouraging the dog to pee in one area will make it easier to manage and repair that one patch. “Running grasses like couch, kikuyu and buffalo can self-repair to fill the affected spot,” says Angie.

You can also put Dog Rocks in your dog’s water bowl, which help to reduce nitrogen compounds in water.

BUG OFF!

NOW IS THE TIME TO PROTECT YOUR PET – AND YOUR HOME – FROM FLEAS AND TICKS

The combination of warmer and wetter weather has brought on flea and tick season early this year, so make sure your pet is protected from these annoying (and, at worst, deadly) parasites.

Baby steps

You can use most flea and tick products from when your kitten or puppy is eight weeks old, says Dr Ilze Nel of the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH). Follow the packet instructions and don’t share the same product between your dog and cat. “The dose strength is often different and some active ingredients for dogs are toxic to cats,” she says.

Treatments vary, too, based on the size of your animal and method of application (oral or topical). If in doubt, just ask, advises Dr Ilze. “Pick a product that suits your lifestyle, so you can keep to the treatment intervals,” she says.

Tick list

Regularly check your pet for ticks by running your fingers through their

coat, feeling for lumps attached to the skin, says Dr Ilze. “It is important to search all over the body, in between the toes, around the lips and inside any lip or nose folds, inside ears, underneath the collar and even the tail,” she says.

If you find a tick, remove it with a tick removal device, tweezers or grabbing it with your fingers adjacent to the skin, then twist and pluck it away. Monitor your pet for signs of tick paralysis, which include difficulty standing or moving, rapid breathing, loss of bark/meow, groaning, coughing or vomiting. Paralysis ticks inject a toxin into the bloodstream that can be fatal if left untreated. If you are concerned, call your local vet or a 24/7 emergency animal hospital.

Flea bag

Although fleas aren’t as deadly as ticks, you should still treat your pet year round. And if their health isn’t motivation enough, think of your home. “Ninety-five per cent of the flea life cycle, such as eggs and larvae, occurs in the environment, including

your home, with only five per cent represented by the adult fleas you see on your pet,” warns Dr Ilze. “It takes just one flea to cause an infestation in your home. Once established, it can take months to eliminate, even when you are using effective products to kill the adult fleas.”

Aside from the ick factor, Dr Ilze says, “Fleas can cause skin allergies, which can be difficult to control and will require a visit to your local vet, or even a specialist hospital such as SASH to see a dermatologist.”

Your cat and dog may be besties, but don’t be tempted to use the same treatment product on both of them By the time you notice fleas on kitty, your home may already be infested!

are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Keep in mind...

n When using cutting tools, sanding and applying varnish, wear the recommended safety gear and work in a well-ventilated area.

n Use a marine-grade varnish to help prevent moisture damage and position the ladder undercover, out of direct weather.

1 To make the side rails, mark the pine to 1800mm, then make the cuts at 45° using a mitre box with handsaw. Tip: Angled cuts at the base help keep the ladder stable.

2 To make the rungs, mark the dowel to four 400mm lengths, clamp to the workbench and cut to length with a handsaw. Smooth around the cuts with 180-grit abrasive paper.

3 Mark a centreline down the 42mm face of the rails. From the base, measure up 400mm, 800mm, 1200mm and 1600mm, then use a 22mm spade bit to drill the holes to 15mm deep.

4 Apply exterior adhesive to the holes. Tap the rungs into one rail with a rubber mallet, then position the other rail against them, matching the holes and tapping to secure. Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth.

5 Clamp across the ladder at the ends and leave to dry. Sand all over and wipe away dust with a clean, damp cloth. Apply two coats of marinegrade varnish with a brush, leaving to dry, then sanding lightly after each coat.

6 Apply a third coat of varnish; leave to dry. Position ladder on a flat surface and against a solid wall; secure to walls at the top of rails, using fixings suitable for your wall type. Install 380mm-wide hanging holders with potted plants.

DIFFERENT STROKES

Reach for your brushes to use up leftover sample pots of acrylic paint. To give a plain fabric drum lampshade a floral revamp (above), measure the inner circumference and height of the shade, and cut and join tracing paper to this size. Draw your design in black marker on the paper, then tape it to the inside of the shade; the design should show through. Use artist’s brushes to paint your design on the outside of the shade, allow to dry, then remove the paper template before attaching the shade to your lamp base.

To take a budget-friendly coir doormat from basic to bespoke (right), draw the centre of your lines on the mat in marker pen then, using 20mm-wide brushes, apply two to three coats of paint in different colours, leaving to dry after each coat.

DECK STARS

CHECK OUT THESE ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR UPKEEP AND RENOVATION IN TIME FOR THE ENTERTAINING SEASON

Timber decks come in all shapes and sizes, from a low-down platform to a balcony on high or a sprawling sundeck, but they all have one thing in common: they need regular maintenance to keep them safe and shipshape. This line-up of tools will help you keep your deck looking its best.

EXPERT TIP

1 Deck scrubber

You can ditch the old-fashioned scrubbing brush and that tin of elbow grease for a powered scrubber that will save you time and give your back a break. This clever tool’s powerful action combats dirt, grime and stubborn stains, leaving timber boards fresh, vibrant and ready for outdoor entertaining. Use it for spot cleans or to scrub boards before oiling.

2 Pressure washer

Perfect for a quick spruce-up or a total rejuvenation project, a pressure washer makes blasting away dirt and grime a breeze. Rotary heads, scrubbing attachments and built-in detergent tanks make tackling large surfaces easy. An indispensable companion for deck maintenance, the convenience of this piece of kit will have you reaching for it at every opportunity.

3 Random orbital sander

Prep your deck before oiling by restoring damaged areas with a random orbital sander, helping you to achieve a flawless and professional finish. This tool’s convenient and compact design enables easy access to hard-to-reach areas, vital when getting rid of splinters, marks and worn sections on timber decking. A must-have in your deck-care toolkit.

4 Drill driver

For easy replacement of damaged screws and attaching replacement decking boards, reach for a drill driver. With adjustable torque settings ensuring precise control, you’ll avoid over-tightening of screws and potential damage to the decking material. The long-lasting battery provides cordless freedom, plus ample time to keep your deck in top-notch condition.

5

Jumbo deck brush

Make quick work of staining or oiling your decking with a user-friendly, ultra-wide brush that simultaneously covers multiple boards. The long, thick filaments hold more product than the average paintbrush – which means faster application and the ability to reach gaps between boards for an even coating, overcoming the challenges rollers and pads may face.

Vine of the times

Create pretty vertical displays with plants that ramble up

Bougainvillea

A vigorous climber with colourful bracts (modified leaves) in pink, purple, red, orange, apricot, yellow and white. Likes full sun and is evergreen in warm climes but can go dormant in cold winter areas. Will grow up to 12 metres; dwarf varieties offer a manageable, lowmaintenance size (up to 1.5 metres).

Carolina jasmine

Reaching three to five metres tall if supported, this evergreen twining climber has dainty, golden-yellow perfumed blooms over the warmer months. Grow in full sun and feed in spring with a flower-specific fertiliser. All parts are toxic, so keep away from children and pets.

Star jasmine

The classic spring-flowering climber has a profusion of white, fragrant blooms and glossy dark-green leaves. Plant in full sun or shady spots, in well-draining soil, and let it clamber over fences, pergolas and arches, or up a column. Tolerant of dry conditions once established.

Pandorea

This evergreen native climber has white or pale-pink trumpet-shaped blooms in spring and summer. It prefers warm, frost-free zones, in full sun or part shade, and looks great festooned over fences, arches, pergolas and walls. After flowering, prune to maintain shape and size, or it may reach up to five metres.

FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT

Feed with a high-potassium fertiliser in spring; trim in autumn but beware the spined branches!

This beauty grows well over pergolas, arches and fences but works as a groundcover, too.

Tough and low maintenance, this makes a great groundcover. Prune after flowering for a dense habit.

Protect young plants from frost. Once established, it’s a low water user, unless in a hot, very dry spot.
