Welcome

Keen watchers of The Block Australia will know the hit TV reno show was filmed in Daylesford in rural Victoria this year. With Bunnings as the major partner, it was a no-brainer to ‘move in’ for the day and photograph our Christmas cover and decor story on location (page 15). While we decided House 3 was perfect for our needs on the day, across the board the quality of the homes and landscaping was impressive. Every team – and their build crew – should feel super proud of what they achieved. And of course extra kudos to the winners, announced just as we went to print… Bravo Britt and Taz! This issue bundles up everything you might need to smooth the path to year-end festivities, from garden colour (page 52), seasonal yard tasks (page 44) and summer herbs (page 48) to heat-busting strategies (page 55). We have also compiled gift ideas from all over the warehouse and website (page 35), plus a shortlist of handy tools – aka Santa’s little helpers – to help you with last-minute guest prep (page 74). Sending very best wishes, from our home to yours, for a wonderful festive season. Enjoy the issue!

Weisshorn inflatable stand-up paddleboard/kayak, I/N: 0395070*.

What’s in the garden? Crossandra (Crossandra infundibuliformis), a tropical plant that’s also known as the firecracker flower.

Plant age: Two years old

Plant parent: Esther

Climate: I live in Far North Queensland so humidity tends to be high, which this plant enjoys. Where did it come from? I purchased these from Cairns and Smithfield Bunnings stores.

Best feature: It’s a beautiful ground-covering plant with a wonderful blend of bright orange firecracker flowers and contrasting dark green foliage.

Essential care: To encourage bushier growth and to allow the plants to breathe among the humidity, I trim back the stems. I also remove spent flowers to promote continuous blooming.

Beauty treatment: I add a good dose of soil conditioner to enhance the health of the soil.

Do you have a favourite plant to share with us? Email your tips and images (with ‘Plant parent’ in the subject line) to submissions@bunnings.com.au

December IN THE GARDEN

In warmer zones, keep tropical fruits such as watermelon, mangoes, lychees and passionfruit healthy and happy over summer with regular watering and feeding with a fertiliser high in potassium*.

Raise your mower blades so you only trim the top third of the grass; this promotes stronger growth and, ultimately, a healthier lawn.

Ensure every drop of water counts by applying a soil wetter to pots, troughs, lawns and garden beds. It helps water soak deeply into the soil or potting mix, delivering moisture to where it’s needed, at the plant roots. Add a layer of mulch to further help conserve moisture.

Erect shade cloth to protect tender foliage and developing fruit from the harsh summer sun. For a simple, temporary solution, drape and secure it over stakes or star pickets, or even use a large umbrella.

Cover bare patches of soil with a lowgrowing groundcover such as Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’, native violet or dymondia. These plants spread quickly, suppress weeds and also provide visual interest.

Give fruit trees, like mango, some summer TLC!

FRAGRANT FLORALS

Seasonal stars

These plants smell like summer!

Madagascar jasmine (Stephanotis floribunda)

Encourage the vines to climb an arbour or pergola, so you can enjoy the heavenly scent as you walk beneath them.

Gardenia (Gardenia spp.)

The fragrant, creamy-white star-shaped blooms set against a backdrop of glossy green leaves add charm to any garden.

Frangipani (Plumeria spp.)

A tropical favourite that bears clusters of waxy, fragrant five-petalled blooms in white, yellow, pink or red during the warmer months*.

GARDEN MUST-HAVE

Make watering easier – and keep the yard tidy – with this retractable hose reel from Pope. The 20m kink-resistance hose can reach the corners of most gardens, locks at the desired length and retracts back into the reel slowly and smoothly. A slim bracket means the reel can be mounted to a wall or 75mm-wide post, and can pivot 180 degrees for ease of use. Connectors, wall fixings and multifunction handspray are included. ●

After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets. For more on what to do in the garden during December, go to bunnings.com.au/ garden-hub

UP THE GARDEN PATH

The once-neglected grounds of this old-timer are now bursting with life, style and eclectic beauty.

Words Kirsten Craze Photography Sue Stubbs Styling Anna Zielinski

Meet the family

When Penny moved into her Sydney home with now 10-year-old twins Frankie and Ava – along with groodle Ringo – the historic property had a whole lot of yard, but no real garden to speak of. “It was very much a blank canvas. No-one had been living in the house for about 15 years so it was fairly derelict,” says Penny. Fast forward two years, and the approach to the now-renovated home has been transformed into a playful wonderland filled with life – from frogs to vegie beds and a unique mural underfoot. “My happy place is our garden. I love the process of planting, nurturing and curating.”

BUNNINGS BEST BUY: “Seasol seaweed solution is my go-to for keeping everything happy and healthy, especially when re-planted or newly planted,” says Penny.

The family’s Federation-era residence has a long history and a deep connection to the local area. In 1905, the lot and its neighbours were auctioned off to raise funds for Centennial Park, 189 hectares of green space which sits just across the road from Penny’s place. “This is a pretty special house. There’s only ever been two families live here before us,” explains Penny. “The last family owned the home for more than 60 years. They still drop by for visits, which is really lovely.”

As a non-executive director on philanthropic boards, and a member of the board of governors of the Centennial Parklands Foundation, Penny is passionate about history, education and nature – so at home she sought out a way to combine the power of all three.

“As soon as I saw the property and the space in the garden, my thinking was to create something lush and native, but also whimsical and wonderful,” she says.

“Each season adds something new in the garden, and we love watching it grow“
Penny/homeowner

Through imaginative design and planting, the front yard now has energy and character.

DIGGING IN

Penny says even though the house and gardens were in dire need of nurturing, the overall rejuvenation project has been a slow and steady labour of love.

“We planted the garden last autumn, then over winter a lot of the plants sort of went to sleep. This spring was probably the first time we were able to see everything start blossoming and filling out,” she explains.

To personalise the space, the family brought in some favourite established plants from their previous home, including a mature frangipani tree and a cherished pomegranate tree that almost didn’t survive the move.

“It’s healthy now, but it took a lot of tender love and care to bring it back. We thought we’d lost it there for a while,” says Penny.

More than just a makeover, the garden glow-up is a living, breathing family story that continues to evolve.

“It’s been wonderful bringing it to life,” says Penny, adding that the gardens are a mini ecosystem that mirrors the nearby parklands. “One of my favourite spots is the pond (see right) where we’ve got a family of frogs. It’s been really exciting watching them settle in.”

The family’s pretty pond provides a welcome habitat for a colony of striped marsh frogs, with their distinctive ‘tok’ call. As with most frog species, they help keep mozzies at bay by eating the larvae.
The garden is full of play and learning opportunities.

DESIGN AND DETAIL

After two years of renovations outside and inside – where walls and ceilings are colour drenched in a soothing green, and botanical fabrics and artworks provide a nurturing backdrop – Penny says the home stretch is in sight. The garden vision was a team effort, with plant suggestions from landscape architect Emily Simpson. The front garden is home to a mix of perennials such as apricot Agastache (hummingbird mint), salvia and bronze fennel, while the natives include Banksia spp, Randia fitzalanii (native or brown gardenia), lemon myrtle and kangaroo paw. There are also hardy low-maintenance succulents and soft grasses, as well as established frangipani and dragon trees. Penny calls on gardener Nick Goldsworthy to help with maintenance and moving things around when needed.

Edible additions along the north-eastern boundary include a pineapple guava hedge plus lemon, lime, fig and mandarin trees, while three circular beds have been filled with aromatic herbs like mint, oregano, rosemary and thyme.

After opening up the back of the house, there is now a rear entertainer’s deck, a pool, a lawn space ringed by steel edging and the children’s formidable fort. With a blank canvas to play ‘house’, the garden quickly became a family project that included creative input from everyone. “My kids built a fort in the backyard (above). It was one of their first projects – they even did a site survey and made a scale model!” says Penny. “We used leftover materials from the house renovation and there were a few trips to Bunnings, which luckily is just up the road. That was a fantastic learning experience.”

Penny’s daughters have also been keen to help maintain several garden beds, packed with edible leafy greens and vegetables. “We’ve got a forest of kale, plenty of root vegetables like carrots, and some citrus trees. And the girls love to taste the nectar-filled salvia flowers,” says Penny. “Some of the natives we’ve planted are also edible, which is fun for the girls to try. Their school has gardening as part of the curriculum, so they’ve always had their hands in the dirt. That connection with nature is really important to me.”

Hues from the garden continue indoors, forming a backdrop for pattern, art and handcrafted objects – including the timber seat made by Ava.

FRONT-YARD FLAIR

While the thriving greenery has become a neighbourhood talking point, another garden feature has been turning heads out the front of the house – a once barren concrete pathway that is now a colourful canvas.

“The path was already there, and I thought, why dig up something perfectly functional? So I asked my dear friend, artist Stephanie Têtu, to paint a mural on it,” says Penny.

Known for her large-format paintings of birds and flowers, Stephanie (@stephanie_tetu) experimented with durable outdoor paints to create a cheerful walkway filled with flora and fauna that stops locals in their tracks.

“It took a few weeks of Stephanie coming by when she had the time, and when the weather allowed. People

stopped and chatted with her as she was creating it,” recalls Penny. “Now I sit in my office, which is the front room, and I still see people stopping to have a look.”

In keeping with the Australiana-themed footpath mural, Stephanie also designed a mosaic of a curious black cockatoo, anchored into the reinstated tessellated tiles on the front porch (above). Mosaic artist Louise Proost (@loopmosaics) meticulously crafted the piece with glass and ceramic.

“My girls and I had some input into the design, because we feel a connection with black cockatoos, but we were pretty confident they both knew what they were doing,” says Penny. “Ultimately, the works are pretty closely aligned with our love of Australian flora and fauna.”

A mural and mosaic design (below) by artist Stephanie Têtu transformed a dull concrete path into a masterpiece.

THE BLOCK 2025: DESIGN LOOKBOOK

As the season wraps, we take a look at the lifestyle spaces dreamt up by the teams, plus bright DIY ideas for indoors and out.

Kitchens, bathrooms and entertaining areas get the most attention at auction time, but a home’s personality can often come from smaller ‘extra’ spaces. From a muscle-soothing spa pool to a perfectly organised shed, the teams showed off their style – and their own priorities! – with these creative add-ons and little design footnotes that deliver daily joy.

Britt and Taz carved out multiple usable spaces in their big backyard. A surprise gift from their builder, the chook house is a scaled-down replica of their House 3 build.

OUTDOOR WITH MORE

Blessed with big backyards, the teams had scope to build outdoor spaces that offered more than just a nice view from the deck. On that score, Britt and Taz completely smashed the brief. With a surprise around every corner, their extra features satisfied the Daylesford dream – whether that’s a wellness escape, country-lite farm lifestyle, or both! Timber arbours lend height and structure to the garden, an invitation to venture out and explore each pocket of tranquillity – a bench seat beneath a birdhouse; a dry creek bed where kids are drawn to play; a wellness zone with hot and cold therapies; plus an urban farmer’s starter kit of greenhouse, fruit trees and a delightfully bougie chook house.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

A well-planned shed – and there were plenty of those – is a thing of beauty. When it came to their outdoor structures, the teams delivered a host of surprises, creating unique recreation destinations. Emma and Ben converted theirs into a golfing paradise; the ultimate man cave, complete with golf simulator. Meanwhile, Han and Can created an atmospheric art studio, flooded with natural light from circular skylights.

But, arguably, the most jaw-dropping ‘extra’ space was Robby and Mat’s underground wine cellar; planned from week one, excavated under the deck, and finished with custom racks and wallpaper that Robby designed himself. As judge Darren Palmer put it, “They swung hard, but this is a home run”.

“I wanted clear zones and multiple areas of interest – places to sit, to relax, to read, to exercise, for art, for kids to play“

LIFESTYLE PLUS!

2. Britt and Taz’s greenhouse is a welcome space for gardeners to potter.

3. Han and Can converted their shed into two contrasting halves – one for building and heavy-duty projects, the other a dreamy art studio.

4. Emma and Ben’s golf simulator is the headline act for avid golfers, complete with fake grass and snazzy lights.

5. A class act from start to finish, Robby and Mat’s wine cellar features bespoke wallpaper, designed by Robby himself.

6. We love a well-planned shed and judge Marty Fox agrees, saying of this one by Robby and Mat, “A valuer will come through here and tick this box”. ● 1 3 2 4 5 6

SUMMER GARDEN PLANNER

Get on the front foot with yard prep to enjoy thriving beds, pots and lawns this season.

Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

When summer comes around, the garden takes centre stage. It’s the living room of choice for outdoor entertaining on a warm evening, the source of handy salad harvests when you’re preparing a meal, and a cool and shady retreat at all times.

Gardens set the scene for the festive season, too, so they have to look their best at this time of year. If you’re seeking a little inspiration, take your lead from our handy fourweekend planner, to help you tick off all the essential jobs on the garden to-do list over summer.

WEEKEND

Summer can be tough on plants, so set them up to cope with the heat.

■ Apply a soil-wetting agent to all areas, to help water penetrate effectively down to the root zone. Available in granular or liquid forms, these products counter soil’s waterrepellent properties (especially a hard, crusty surface) so water absorbs properly without simply running off. Treat containers too, as potting mixes can also become waterrepellent over time.

■ Spread mulch over beds to insulate the surface and slow down evaporation. Use a loose-structured mix for effective water penetration. A blend of compost with

WEEKEND

Start off with a few early summer jobs, and smarten things up before Christmas.

■ Lawns get a lot of use in summer, so help them maintain their good looks for months to come. Apply a dressing of slow-release lawn food now and tackle nasties like bindiis before they become a pain in the

foot – use a selective weed spray suitable for your type of lawn or remove by hand. To repair bare lawn patches quickly, install matching turf. ■ In the vegie garden, pull out the remains of spent winter/spring crops and fork through compost and well-rotted manure. Plant seeds or seedlings of beans, capsicum, cucumber, eggplants, tomatoes and zucchini. If you don’t have a vegie patch, buy a few lightweight troughs and make yourself ‘salad sufficient’ for summer – plant lettuce, basil, rocket, parsley and mizuna, plus a few easy-care cherry tomatoes.

■ Before the entertaining season, clean paving and decks using a pressure washer and wash down outdoor furniture. For a quick burst of floral colour, fill decorative containers with blooms – petunias, calibrachoas, impatiens, mini marigolds, salvias and brachyscome are all great options.

■ Add wow factor with a plant known for its Christmas-time show. New South Wales Christmas bush (Ceratopetalum gummiferum) produces a brilliant display of pinkishred sepals in December, and can be grown as a large shrub or small tree.

pea straw laid no more than 5cm thick is a good recipe. Leave a clear space around plant stems and water well after application.

■ Irrigation systems are great timesavers and a wide range of sprays and drippers are available to suit garden beds, lawns and container plants. Install a timer (automated or manual) to simplify the job

and minimise wastage. First, measure out a rough map of your garden beds and lawn areas, marking the tap locations, then head in store for parts and advice.

■ If you’re going away for holidays, cluster your potted plants in a shady spot with saucers beneath them. Water well before leaving and call on a trusty friend or neighbour to top them up.

WEEKEND

Enhance the summer vibe with tranquil scenes and lingering scents.

■ A water feature creates an irresistible focal point in a garden, even on the smallest scale. You can purchase an all-in-one kit or create your own: select a decorative container about 20-30cm deep* and seal the drainage hole with silicone. Add a submerged

aquatic plant (these help keep the water clean) and a few small fish to eat any mozzie wrigglers, and install a small fountain with a solar-powered pump.

■ Birds get thirsty at this time of year, so place a birdbath or water bowl in a protected spot where they can safely drink and bathe, ideally near low branches. You can dress up birdbaths and water bowls at night by floating a few flowers and candles on the surface.

■ A summer garden needs perfume, so think about adding a frangipani or gardenia to your backyard scene. Best suited to warmer regions, frangipani trees can be kept compact by winter pruning and the

flowers exude a gorgeous scent, especially on summer nights. Shrubby gardenias can be slightly more tolerant of cool winters. They make fragrant hedges or tub plants.

■ There’s still time to top up your summer vegie supply, as earlier plantings start to expire. Put in a few quick-cropping cherry tomatoes, dwarf beans, cucumbers and zucchini along with leafy greens such as lettuce, rocket, Asian greens and basil.

Keep in mind

■ Wear gloves and a mask when handling mulch, compost and potting mix and also when pruning, along with long sleeves, as the leaves and sap of some plants can be a skin irritant and cause allergic reactions.

■ Take care when selecting plants as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and check their suitability for your area, as some may be classified as weeds in certain states and territories.

■ Store garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

■ Check with your local authority if watering restrictions apply in your area, and adjust timer settings to suit.

■ Always closely supervise children around any body of water.

HOT CHOICES

You can enjoy plenty of garden colour in summer, while reducing your water use, by seeking out showy foliage plants. Bromeliads are top of the list, their broad leaves splashed, spotted and striped with pinks, reds and golds. For something larger, check out the numerous varieties of cordyline on offer, both the spikyleaved types and the broad-leaved forms of Cordyline fruticosa. As alternatives to flowers in pots and garden beds, succulents offer plenty of variety, from grey and mauve echeverias to golden sedums and the muted blue of Senecio serpens, also known as blue chalksticks.

WEEKEND

Tame that exuberant summer growth and tackle any pests and diseases head-on.

■ Late summer calls for a general prune back, to reclaim some of the garden’s overgrown space! Trim back spent flowering stems on shrubs, perennials and natives that have finished blooming (leave healthy blooms on shrubs like hydrangea). Deadhead agapanthus so they don’t spread seed, and cut back twining tendrils on climbing plants such as wisteria and star jasmine.

■ In humid areas, watch for mildew diseases that

present as white powder on stems and foliage – spray with a fungicide. Remove scale insects from plant stems using soapy water and a toothbrush (or spray with horticultural oil) and keep an eye out for hungry caterpillars on flowers and vegetables. Pick them off or spray with insecticide. ■ Keep the garden looking colourful by feeding longblooming flowers, like petunias and impatiens,

with a liquid fertiliser formulated for flowering plants. And if you need replacement colour, look no further than dahlias, which start blooming late in summer and extend right through autumn.

■ If you’re a rose grower, it’s time for a light summer pruning. Remove about a third of the stem on repeat-flowering varieties, and they’ll burst back with another flush in autumn. ●

Herb your enthusiasm!

Add a fresh twist to your hosting this entertaining season with sprigs of yum picked straight from the garden.

When planning what to serve at your next barbecue or party, garnishes are often the last thing you think about, yet herbs used this way can take food and drink from good to Insta-worthy. And it’s easy to grow your own – with a small patch or just a few pots, you’ll always have flavour on hand to brighten a salad, finish a roast or add flair to a mocktail.

Herbs on ladder (from top) thyme, sage, mint and parsley.

Learn which herbs grow well with other plants: bunnings.com.au/ perfect-plant-pairings Read

OFF TO A FRESH START

If you’re new to growing herbs, urban permaculture expert Connie Cao (@connieandluna) suggest seedlings of perennials such as rosemary, oregano, thyme and mint.

“These herbs usually need just one plant each, so it’s easier to buy a single seedling rather than a whole packet of seeds when you only need one,” she says. A selection of common staples such as the Floriana ‘Herb Mix Bowl’ is a convenient way to buy just one of several herbs.

Annual herbs such as coriander and basil are best grown from seed because you often want multiple plants, explains Connie. “They’re also easy to collect seeds from,” she says. “My tip is to save seeds from plants that flower later in the season – later-flowering plants are better adapted to grow over a longer period, which means more herbs for you!”

Certain herbs, like parsley and shiso (often known as Japanese basil) save you the effort of collecting their seeds. “Let them flower and drop their seed, they’ll come back on their own,” she says.

Positioning certain herbs together and also with flowers, vegies and fruit – known as companion planting – can help

each variety grow better. Some plants attract pollinating insects, while the odour of others can deter pests from attacking nearby plants. ‘Decoy’ plants attract pests, while ‘nurturing’ plants create better growing conditions, for example by improving the soil. Common companions include basil with tomatoes and dill with cabbage.

NO GARDEN? NO WORRIES

If you’re renting or short on space, there are plenty of ways to grow herbs beyond traditional garden beds. “Windowsills work really well,” says Connie. “Spring onions and basil are good candidates for this.”

Hanging baskets are another clever option. “Try thyme and oregano, for a fragrant whiff every time you walk past. These two have a more trailing habit, so they also look gorgeous,” says Connie. You can also try a prostrate (sprawling) rosemary. “Salvia rosmarinus ’Chef’s Choice’ is especially fragrant and great to grow as a groundcover or in a rockery garden,” she says. With these spacesaving solutions, even the tiniest areas can become a flourishing herb haven.

(Clockwise from top left) oregano, marjoram, oregano, lemon balm, sage, mint.

Mint can spread fast, so grow it in a pot to avoid garden chaos!

Chop excess herbs and freeze in ice-cube trays for use throughout the year

MORE THAN POT LUCK

Herbs thrive in containers, but they do need a little extra attention to keep producing. “Perennial herbs benefit from being repotted every couple of years or whenever they start to lose vigour,” says Connie Cao. “Potting mix naturally breaks down over time, losing its structure and making it harder for roots to access water, air and nutrients. Repotting into a premium mix refreshes the roots and keeps your herbs productive.”

Connie also recommends giving potted herbs a liquid feed, alternating fish emulsion with liquid seaweed. The fish emulsion provides essential nutrients, while the seaweed encourages strong roots and healthy growth. “Regular watering is also key, especially for plants grown in smaller containers that dry out quickly during summer,” she says.

PREP YOUR PATCH

Herbs aren’t fussy, but a little preparation goes a long way. If you’re growing them in garden beds, lightly fork the ground to loosen the soil and mix in some compost or well-aged animal manure. “Herbs are mostly light feeders, so that’s all they really need,” advises Connie. If you’re using a raised bed, ensure you fill it with a good quality garden mix and work in compost. ●

GO-TO GARNISHES

Want maximum flavour for minimal effort? These top seven herbs pull double (or triple) duty in your kitchen.

1 Basil “My favourite herb!” says self-taught baker and The Great Australian Bake Off finalist, Dan Pasquali. “It pairs beautifully with burrata and tomatoes in a Caprese salad, and it also adds the final Italian touch to red sauce for pasta or pizza. I often use it in desserts, too, like a lemon and basil cake.”

2

Mint A fresh, versatile herb that instantly brightens any dish or drink. “It’s perfect in chilled drinks, scattered over fresh fruit or desserts like a mint chocolate chip cheesecake, and just as good with lamb or in savoury salads,” says Dan.

3

Chives Delicate yet punchy with a subtle onion flavour. Dan loves to sprinkle them over eggs, frittata sandwiches and creamy potato salads. “Chives also look so pretty as a garnish,” he says.

4

Thyme We know this classic herb pairs perfectly with roast chicken, salmon and root vegies, but Dan suggests trying it with desserts, too. “A lemon thyme sorbet with summer berries? Just divine!”

5 Rosemary Aromatic and robust, rosemary adds a Mediterranean touch to dishes – perfect on roast meats and grilled summer vegetables. “I love to infuse it in extra virgin olive oil and use a sprig in mocktails,” says Dan. “At Christmas, I like to use an upside-down sprig dusted in icing sugar to garnish a cake – it looks like a pine tree covered in snow.”

6

Dill Delicate and fragrant, it’s ideal for summer seafood, pickles or potatoes. “Even just a sprinkle of dill over a dressing or creamy dip can lift the whole dish,” says Dan.

7

Edible flowers Though not herbs, edible flowers like pansies and nasturtiums make a fabulous garnish for sweet and savoury dishes. “They instantly make a dish feel elegant and celebratory,” says Dan. “Nasturtiums, with their lightly peppery flavour, are especially good in summer salads.”

Summer stunners

For a Christmas show, these vibrant, pot-friendly perennials are hard to beat.

HIPPEASTRUM (Hippeastrum spp)

Spectacular when planted en masse, this summer dazzler has large, trumpet-shaped blooms in shades of red, pink, orange, pale green and white. They’re evergreen in warm climates but will lose their leaves and go dormant in winter in cooler areas. Plant in full sun to part shade in pots or garden beds in a spot where they’ll be protected from strong winds.

ORIENTAL LILY (Lilium hybrids)

This big, bold and beautiful lily is prized for its intoxicating fragrance and large, star-shaped pink or white flowers. They grow best in subtropical to cool climates and prefer full sun, but will need some afternoon shade in hot areas. Plant bulbs in rich, well-draining soil, keep them well watered during the growing season and feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser.

PRINCESS LILY (Alstroemeria hybrids)

A reliable performer, this perennial produces clusters of flowers in pink, red, orange, yellow and white, often with delicate streaks or spots. Available in tall and dwarf varieties, they are long-lasting in the garden and as cut flowers, blooming from spring into autumn. Happy in all climates, they like a position in full sun or light shade.

CHRISTMAS LILY (Lilium longiflorum)

This lily’s crisp white blooms work beautifully in mixed plantings. Its trumpet-shaped flowers with soft green throats have a delicate, sweet perfume and appear from late spring in warm regions (where it’s also called the November lily) and during summer in cooler areas. For best results, grow in full sun to part shade in soil enriched with organic matter. ●

outdoor heat busters

hen the going gets hot, there’s no better place to cool off than in your own backyard. From smart irrigation to misting kits and above-ground pools and spas, there are plenty of easy ways to stay refreshed. Throw in a few fun extras – think sprinklers for kids and dogs or a DIY outdoor shower – and you’re set to breeze through even the hottest days. Chill

1

WATER FEATURES

Looking for an easy way to cool down? Add a pond, fountain or water feature – many off-the-shelf styles can be installed in an afternoon. The sound of trickling water is instantly calming, and as the water moves and evaporates, it naturally cools the air around it. Place one near a window or sliding doors and you can feel the effect indoors, too.

2

ABOVE-GROUND POOLS

An ideal fix for families wanting the fun of a pool with a smaller price tag, today’s above-ground pools come in all shapes and sizes. Landscaper Anthony Antoun at Mr & Ms Group (mrandmsgroup.com.au) says, “They are affordable, easy to set up and versatile – plus you can pack them away when not in use.” Always check at your council for above-ground pool, fencing and pond guidelines.

3

INFLATABLE SPAS

After a long day, nothing beats sinking into a spa. Portable inflatable models make it easy to enjoy the bubbles without the cost or hassle of a renovation, says Mark Rushton at Bestway. “They’re compact, easy to set up in around 20 minutes and heat to 40°C with built-in air jets – and you can pack them away,” he notes. That versatility means inflatable spas are a great choice for renters, and households in properties with smaller backyards.

“Misting kits are a great option for cooling off when the heat is here“

SPRINKLERS

A backyard classic that never fails to delight, a sprinkler turns an ordinary afternoon into joy. “There’s always a buzz in the garden when kids are running through sprinklers – and pets get just as much thrill cooling off under them, too,” says Stephen Payne, watering buyer at Bunnings. Expect nostalgic favourites in store this summer, like the Helicopter Sprinkler, as well as bright new hoses.

TAP TIMERS

No-one wants to stand around with a hose in the sun. With a tap timer, you set it once and it does the job for you, saving time and water. And, says Stephen, "This summer we’re upgrading technology in our smart tap timers and indoor watering plant sensors.”

An irrigation system makes good garden sense – and can provide supervised fun for kids and pets. Check with your local authority if

MISTING KITS

Hot day, full house? A misting kit keeps partygoers comfortable, even when the sun is relentless. It sprays a fine, refreshing mist that cools the air and guests. “Misters are ideal for a backyard or courtyard. We’ve even seen them used at festivals – they’re a crowd favourite,” says Stephen. The benefits are clear, explains Matt Wichmann at Holman. “They can drop the temperature by up to 10°C, depending on humidity and airflow,” he says. “Pair a mister with an outdoor fan to accelerate evaporation and create a cooler microclimate.”

BEAT THE HEAT

Staying cool outdoors isn’t just about water play – a few sun-wise habits can help, too. To cut evaporation and keep plants thriving, water the garden in the early morning or evening. Avoid being outside in the hottest part of the day, and stay hydrated with cold drinks. “Shade is also key,” advises Anthony. “Use pergolas, umbrellas, shade sails or fast-growing plants like bamboo, grapevine or wisteria. Light-coloured outdoor rugs also help reduce heat retention, and portable fans or cooling outdoor fabrics give instant relief.”

SOAKER HOSES

“Even simple water products like soaker hoses can transform a backyard into a cooling retreat,” says Anthony. Laid on a lawn or in a garden bed, a soaker hose can either spray up for sprinkling or be turned over for soaking. It’s efficient, affordable and fun for kids and pets.

SLIDES AND SPLASH PADS

Cue the squeals, splashes and all-day entertainment. Inflatables can turn the backyard into a mini water park – splash pads are perfect for little ones and pets, while slides keep bigger kids happy. “Our H2OGo! water parks and slides are endless fun,” says Mark Rushton. “They inflate quickly, connect to a hose and the water park has a climbing wall and water cannon.”

OUTDOOR SHOWERS

Whether it’s rinsing sandy feet or cooling down after gardening, an outdoor shower makes summer living a lot easier. “DIY models can be installed in a few hours,” says Anthony Antoun. “I like to place them near a drain or a garden bed to reuse greywater, away from windows for privacy.”** If you’re after versatility, try a portable model – they’re easy to set up and can even be taken camping or to the beach.

POOL CARE CHECKS

A little regular pool upkeep saves a whole lot of hassle later; scoop out leaves, rinse the filter and check chlorine and pH every few days, and add a decent cover to keep out debris and reduce evaporation. That way, you’ll spend less time scrubbing and more time swimming – with the pool always ready for laps or lazy floats. ●

ROAD TRIP BUDDIES

Getting ready for a long car trip takes a lot of preparation but don’t forget your pet has travel needs, too. Here’s a quick checklist.

■ Pack a kit with food, bottled water, bowls, lead, poo bags, toys and medication.

■ Check ID details on the microchip and collar tag are up to date.

■ Schedule stops every couple of hours for everyone to stretch their legs.

■ The front seat is only for humans and it’s illegal to travel with a pet on your lap.

■ Transport cats and small dogs in a carrier that is secured to stop it sliding around and is big enough for them to stand up and turn around. Larger dogs need a harness attached to the seatbelt (check it meets Australian standards).

■ Pack your pet’s favourite blanket so they have something with familiar smells.

■ Never leave your pet alone in the car.

Festive follies

Christmas is a time of joy, but two of the best bits of the silly season can be dangerous for our pets. Follow these simple guidelines to keep them safe.

Seasonal decorations Sparkly, dangling, often ball-like objects can look like a giant playground for our pets. Place anything tempting out of reach, including lighting cords, and clean up gift wrap and ribbons after opening presents to avoid ingestion. Christmas food It’s yummy for us, but can pose a danger to our pets. RSPCA Australia recommends keeping the following items out of reach: alcohol, avocado, chocolate, Christmas pudding, coffee, cooked bones, currants, fruit cake, grapes, gravy, ham, lollies, macadamia nuts, marinades, onion, pork and raisins. You could give your pets a food puzzle or create a treasure hunt of safe treats while your feast is on the table.

JUMPING FOR JOY

Welcoming guests is fun, but excited dogs can put off visitors. Try these tips for a calmer pooch.

The influx of guests at Christmas can shine a spotlight on bad behaviour, turning the niggling issue of your dog’s over-enthusiastic greetings into a problem. Campbell Barclay, from RSPCA Victoria’s Good Pet Behaviour Centre, says the arrival of guests, changes to routine and a lack of predictability can create a mix of excitement, social anxiety and arousal, which may lead to jumping as an outlet.

“Dogs jumping can startle or scare people and cause accidental scratches, bruises or even falls for people with mobility concerns,” he says. “It can also fuel a cycle of overexcitement and make it harder for your dog to regulate their emotions,

which potentially leads to behaviours like barking, pacing, or an escalation to nipping in some cases.”

FOUR PAWS ON THE FLOOR

To train your dog to greet guests more calmly, Campbell suggests following these steps.

1 Set up a barrier, such as a baby gate, and practise with family members arriving, so the jumping routine is reduced.

2 If your dog jumps up, stay calm and avoid giving attention — telling them off or pushing them away can reinforce the behaviour.

3 When four paws are on the floor, reward with treats, gentle pats, or by redirecting to a simple cue like “Touch,” “Sit”, or offering a toy.

4 Consistently reward other calm behaviours, such as going to their mat or waiting patiently when people arrive. This teaches them that relaxed greetings earn attention and rewards.

TOO LATE FOR TRAINING?

If your pet isn’t trained by Christmas, switch from training to management mode. If your dog is becoming overwhelmed, give them a break. It’s kinder to let them rest in a quiet room or safe zone, and give them something to chew on. A portable enclosure or crate in a quiet location with access to a mat, water and toys can provide a retreat away from the bustle. Baby gates in doorways can help reduce routine jumping and help your dog self-regulate.

Providing enrichment activities can help redirect excess festive energy; try bully sticks, lick mats, food puzzles, chews or a stuffed treat toy.

Low-key exercise and mental stimulation the day before visitors arrive can help take the edge off. Campbell also reminds us that dogs are social animals, so familiar faces can often help them work through any emotional dysregulation.

Game face

Zhoosh your front porch with easy DIY updates to make it friendly and inviting.

Greeting guests starts before you even answer the door, with the front porch or verandah telling a story about who you are. A pretty entry with glowing light, homely touches and a splash of personality welcomes your guests like a warm hug – and you, too, every time you return home. Here’s how to give your place a refresh just in time for the entertaining season.

An ornamental plant or small tree like this weeping cherry adds polish to a porch. Upsize the pot as the tree grows.

Here’s how to level up your front porch functionality and security.

● Smart door locks take your home into the future and free you from the shackles of keys, allowing access via passcode, fingerprint, facial recognition or geofencing linked to your phone. You can also grant unique codes and limited access to individuals, and monitor who enters and when.

● Video doorbells provide advance warning of who’s at your door before you answer and let you talk to your visitor (for example, telling them where to leave a parcel) from wherever you are, but that’s only the beginning of their capabilities.

Sarah Boutros of Swann says the SwannBuddy4K video doorbell is like having a smart concierge.

“Whether you’re too busy, not home or don’t feel safe answering the door, SwannShield will answer it for you,” she says. “It greets visitors, takes messages and can give delivery instructions, so parcels aren’t left vulnerable.” With wireless functionality and the ability to run on batteries, it’s renter-friendly, too!

● Security cameras take care of areas of your property out of sight of the doorbell, and their visible presence alone can help to deter unwelcome visitors. Cameras can be hardwired, or wireless and solar powered which allows DIY (and tenant) installation around your porch, and makes it easier to take security beyond the verandah.

“The Swann MaxRanger4K solar security system’s solar-powered, long-range 4K cameras can be placed down driveways, near gates or along fence lines, creating a protective perimeter,” Sarah explains. “With strong wi-fi reach and smart detection, it alerts you before anyone even gets near the porch.”

Easy entry

PAINT JOB

A sad concrete or paved porch can be transformed with paint. Just make sure you follow the directions carefully – including patching cracks with concrete filler, cleaning and etching – and use a specialty paint, which will give you hard-wearing adhesion and slip-resistance.

Think about where guests’ eyes might wander as they’re waiting at the door – clean cobwebs and scuff marks from paintwork, and consider a fresh coat on weatherboards, the porch ceiling and trims to make your home appear bright and cared for.

DOOR LIST

A boring front door is a missed opportunity. While cladding colours

tend towards the conservative, a bright front door makes a streetside splash and is a fun (and easy to change) way to express your personality. To choose a hue, think about what you want your front door to say – for example, a bright red or electric blue will grab the eye from across the street, while more reserved versions (burgundy or navy) send a sophisticated message but are equally striking.

While you’re giving your front door a facelift, polish up door hardware at the same time, or consider upgrading. A new handle in bright brass or chic black will transform your entry experience, while an ornate door knocker is the perfect finishing touch to a traditional home.

ALL AGLOW

We light our interiors for both tasks and ambience, so treat your exterior the same way. Jane Troiano, Bunnings lead buyer for home and lifestyle, outlines the options: “For front porch or verandah safety, install weatherproof (IP65+) wall sconces, motion-sensor lights, overhead ceiling lights, step or deck lights, and smart lighting with timers to improve visibility.” Illuminate hazards (such as steps), cover off security with sensor lights near access points, and ensure there’s adequate light by which to find your keys.

Now you’ve considered the essentials, balance them with aesthetics. Always choose warmwhite globes, which cast a cordial

glow, and consider making a decorative statement with wall sconces or a beautiful pendant light.

For renters, or those wanting a quick solution (no electrician required), Jane says, “Consider solar, battery, rechargeable and hybrid-powered options to support easy, DIY-friendly installation.” Hybrid lights run on a combination of solar and battery power, delivering dependable lighting, even on cloudy days or south-facing porches.

POTTED PRETTIES

Furnishing options for petite porches might be limited, but there’s always room for a pot plant or two, which instantly makes an entrance space feel considered and complete. Opt for

a single large pot or a matching pair either side of the front door, or if space is really tight, hanging planters deliver maximum impact while barely encroaching on the space. Plant baskets with flowers like calibrachoa, bacopa and lobelia for a hit of cottage-garden colour, or for a more modern fall of foliage, Siobhan Macreadie-Day of Bunnings Greenlife suggests Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ or creeping Jenny; ferns like Boston fern or staghorn; or strappy specimens such as carex or spider plant. Engage olfactory senses by including fragrant plants on and around the front verandah. Highly scented options might include dwarf lilac. “These get to 1-2m tall, so you would need lots of space and a

large pot,” says Siobhan Macreadie-Day. “Other fragrant options include gardenia, rosemary, daphne and bulbs like daffodil, jonquil and hyacinth. Just note that these die down over winter and the pot will be bare.” A note of caution though: fragrant flowers attract bees, so a whole wall of jasmine is probably too much for a guest entrance, and those who suffer allergies might want to avoid scented flowers altogether.

STYLISH WELCOME

A swing seat or pair of rocking chairs might be a front porch cliché, but honestly, what could be nicer than sitting and watching the world go by? Mix things up to suit your space – a cafe table and chair if the verandah is the best place to catch the morning sun, or a dogfriendly outdoor sofa for you and your furry mate. Bring charm and comfort to the front porch with outdoor cushions, a bowl of flowering bulbs, and a doormat – or better yet, swap the mat for a small outdoor rug in a pretty colour or pattern. ●

The festive season is meant to be fun but between cleaning, shopping, cooking and hosting, the lead-up can be frantic. Cut down on prep stress with these hacks and helpers to reduce effort and save time as you get your home guest ready.

WINDOW WOW

Sparkling windows make a home look fresh – and modern washers and vacs make light work of cleaning them. Brush first to loosen stubborn deposits. The right technique is key to professional-looking results, says Mario Mathuranayagam, Bunnings senior buyer for cleaning and accessories. “Clean on an overcast day, so the solution doesn’t dry too

quickly, and rinse thoroughly for a streak-free shine,” he says. Working from bottom to top can also help prevent streaks.

OUTDOOR POWER

Patios, decks and outdoor furniture can quickly lose their shine, but a focused clean can improve them. High-pressure cleaning tackles dirt, moss and grime on hard areas with ease, while scrubbing brushes and refillable spray bottles suit textured or delicate surfaces. “A high-pressure cleaner is the fastest way to transform outdoor areas before guests arrive,” says Mario. “Use the wider fan spray on timber and a concentrated jet for driveways – it’s all about matching the setting to the surface.” Test on an inconspicuous area first.

Pick it up! Roll, cut and dry

● Boyle ‘Crafty Clay’ air drying clay in White, $10.95/1kg, I/N: 0322562

STEP 1: KNEAD

1 Knead air-dry clay with your hands until pliable, then roll a piece into a tennis-ball size. Tip: Cover excess clay with a damp cloth to help prevent it drying out.

STEP 3: CUT

3 Press a tree-shaped cookie cutter into the clay, remove the offcuts and re-roll to make more tree shapes. Repeat kneading, rolling and cutting clay to make star shapes.

STEP 5: COLOUR

5 Colour the indents on some of the tree shapes with metallic markers. Use metallic paint sticks to colour the stars and some trees, leaving the indents white.

LEFT ● DIY clay ornaments made using: Boyle ‘Crafty Clay’ air drying clay in White, $10.95/1kg, I/N: 0322562, modelling tools, $4.22/pack of 14, I/N: 0322574, and ‘Chubbies’ paint sticks in Metallic Colours, $8.97/pack of 6, I/N: 0084673; and Grunt sisal twine in Dark Green, $3.20/60m, I/N: 4310296. STEP 2: ROLL

2 Working on a cutting board, roll out clay ball to 6mm thick using a rolling pin. Safety tip: Do not use clay tools for food preparation.

STEP 4: INDENT

4 Use a ball stylus modelling tool to make a hanging hole at the top of clay shapes and ‘bauble’ indents in the trees. Wet your finger to smooth cut edges of the clay. Leave to dry completely for at least 24 hours.

STEP 6: HANG

6 Cut lengths of sisal twine to 300mm, thread through hanging hole on clay ornaments and tie off to make a hanger.

1 Pour paint and water into a paint pot in a 2:1 ratio and mix thoroughly. Working on a drop sheet, apply diluted paint to the outside of five pots with a paintbrush, wipe excess with a cloth; let dry. Repeat for second and third coats; let dry after each.

Keep in mind

■ When painting or spray-painting, always wear the recommended safety equipment (such as eye protection, a mask and gloves) and work in a well-ventilated area, covering surrounding areas with a drop sheet to avoid overspray.

■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

■ Ensure hanging hook is suited to your wall type and rated to take the weight of the finished project.

2 Cover the painted pots with scrap paper and painter’s tape. Spray the inside of the pots and five beads with several light coats of gold metallic paint; let dry after each coat. Remove paper, then spray the outside of the pots with sealer; let dry.

ABOVE Use giftwrap ribbon to create pretty tails, and a bow to disguise the top rope knot. The wreath and bells garland can be hung on the same large wall hook or separately.

LIGHT TOUCH

We cut a 1.2m length of timber in half to make two candle holders – one for tapers and one for tealights. But you can use any scrap of interior timber as long as it is thick enough to accommodate your choice of candles. Adapt the length of the timber and the distance between holes to suit your table.

● DIY candle holder made using: Porta 70mm x 70mm FJ laminated DAR square general purpose pine, $30.80/1.2m, I/N: 0262328•; Lytworx 24cm LED taper candles in Warm White, $12/pack of 2, I/N: 0617247; and Selleys ‘Easy Tack’ reusable pressure adhesive, $2.99/75g, I/N: 1210324. ● Lytworx 24cm LED taper candles in Warm White, $12/pack of 2, I/N: 0617247. Pick it up! Create ambience without flames

To make a holder for tealight candles, follow the same steps (right) for the taper holder but use a Forstner bit (this project used a 41mm one), to drill the holes. Tip: The tealight candles will sit securely in the holes without Easy Tack.

ABOVE ● Lytworx battery operated tealights in Warm White, $29.90,/pack of 4, I/N: 0617239.

STEP 1: MARK

1 Working on a drop sheet, clamp timber to a workbench and cut into two 600mm lengths using a circular saw. Starting 10mm from one end of a timber length, mark eight equally spaced and centred points. Tip: You can have your timber cut in store.

STEP 3: SAND

STEP 2: DRILL

2 Wrap painter’s tape around the 22mm spade bit 20-30mm from the tip to use as a depth gauge. Clamp the timber to the workbench and drill holes at each marked point. Wipe away timber shavings.

STEP 4: PAINT

3 Sand the cut edge of the timber and the drilled holes with 120-grit abrasive paper and wipe away the sanding dust. Working in the direction of the grain, sand all the faces of the candle holder with 180-grit paper; wipe away dust.

STEP 5: WIPE

4 To make a ‘whitewash’ with leftover paint, pour paint and water into a paint pot in a 2:1 ratio and mix thoroughly with a paint stirrer. Following the grain, apply a coat of the diluted paint to the top of the candle holder using a paintbrush.

STEP 6: FINISH

5 Use a lint-free cloth to wipe away the excess paint, then leave to dry. Repeat painting, wiping and drying for the sides and ends of the candle holder. Apply a second coat to get more coverage, if desired.

Keep in mind

6 Insert the tapers into the holder, using a little Easy Tack so they sit securely in the holes. You can use fewer candles; stagger the arrangement and cover the empty holes with greenery or decorations. Repeat with remaining timber to make another taper holder or a tealight holder (see left).

■ When using power tools, always protect ears and eyes with ear muffs and safety glasses (gloves and mask are also recommended); when sanding and painting, always wear the recommended safety gear (such as gloves, mask, and eye and ear protection). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in a well-ventilated area.

The project

Make your table glow with a festive DIY centrepiece.
