Paint perfection

Easy squeezy Less mess and less wasted paint, too!

Reader Greg from WA came up with this ingenious tip for loading paint onto a cutting-in pad edger: “Instead of dipping it into a tray, I squeezed the paint on from a refillable sauce bottle. This gave me flexibility to only load one part of the pad, or to load right up to one edge or corner. I used a 1L bottle, which allowed for more than two hours of cutting in. It also meant I wasn’t trying to move a partially filled paint tray; instead, I just used a small paint tray to hold the bottle and pad when moving drop sheets.”

IN THE GARDEN September

Give the lawn some love, pair vegies and blooms, and bring the bees to your yard!

In warm climates, now is the time to renovate the lawn. Aerate, dethatch and top-dress to even out the surface. Follow up with a feed in a few weeks, making sure to water it in well. In cooler areas, hold off until next month or when the weather begins to warm.

There’s plenty to sow and grow in early spring: tomatoes, capsicum, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, beans and sweetcorn. In cooler zones, sow these indoors and plant outside once warm. Don’t forget to include some colour among your vegies and herbs! Bright marigolds, cosmos, nasturtiums and zinnia can help attract pollinating insects to the garden.

Protect developing fruit from birds and other pests with netting. Make sure to use wildlife-safe netting to prevent birds and bats from getting tangled.

Install a purposebuilt bee hotel or

leave some untidy corners, clumps of dry grass, leaf litter or piles of logs and old wood in the garden. These provide a sheltered habitat for native insects such as solitary bees, beetles and other beneficial species.

After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

PRETTY PALATE

Cut and taste

Grow these edible flowers for garden yum.

Native violet (Viola hederacea)

The sweet purple and white blooms of this pretty groundcover have a mild lettuce-like flavour and can be used as a garnish or tossed through salads.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

This low-growing herb has delicate white and yellow flowers. Use it to make a calming tea or to add a gentle fragrance to your garden.

Borage (Borago officinalis)

A sprawling annual herb with blue, star-shaped flowers and cucumberflavoured leaves. Great for salads and garnishes.

GARDEN MUST-HAVE

Short on growing space? A raised planter is ideal for tending to flowers, herbs or vegies at a comfortable height. SPRING SHOW

Load up a windowsill or an occasional table, or take over a brekkie nook with a display of spring loveliness to mark the new season. Layer in tall specimens, then use plant stands and stools to build the middle layers. Surfaces can be filled with smaller plants and cut flowers in jars and vases. Fill gaps with faux blooms and indoor plants for longevity.

Cultivate delight

Welcome spring with a feel-good profusion of colourful, loveable plants.

Spring brings with it a special kind of energy as blossoms put on a dazzling display and leaf buds burst into life. The sense of wellbeing we get from being surrounded by living things is known as biophilia, and one of the easiest ways to incorporate biophilic design in the home is by cultivating plants, inside and out.

Take inspiration from our vibrant sunroom, patio, deck and balcony schemes, and complement your growing collection of greenery with furnishings in timber, rattan, sisal and jute.

Pot luck

Dark pots disappear in a dark background, allowing plants and blooms to pop.

SITTING PRETTY

Beautify a plain expanse of wall or fence using a mesh grid system that allows you to hang a variety of planters. On the ground, an olive tree is a hardy choice that can even tolerate coastal conditions. Choose a dwarf variety for smaller spaces.

FEAST FOR THE SENSES

Entertaining in the fresh air is a favourite spring pastime, and dressing the table with fragrant herbs and fruits makes any meal a seasonal celebration. If you don’t have a deck or patio large enough for dining, you can recreate this look inside, too. Surround your table with potted plants to bring the outdoors in.

Decorate it! Turn the page for table-setting inspiration.

HERB KEEPSAKES

In lieu of placecards, create beautiful and useful growing gifts for guests to take home at the end of the day. Using good-quality potting mix, plant culinary herb seedings in classic terracotta pots and insert pop sticks with your diners’ names written on them with permanent marker. Display on saucers to stop soil escaping through the drainage holes and dirtying the table.

FLORAL CENTREPIECES

Grand bouquets may look impressive, but can obscure sightlines over the table. Take a simpler approach for your springtime spread, and fill off-the-shelf plywood craft crates with small flowering plants in 55mm seedling pots. For evening ambience without the risk (or heat) of open flames, nestle a battery-powered LED candle in the middle of each crate.

TEACUP CACHE POTS

Put a charming twist on high tea and display tiny pots of flowering plants in vintage-look crockery. Op shops and flea markets are a good source of pretty china cups and saucers. Or maybe your grandparents have some that are surplus to requirements – mismatched sets only add to the eclectic look! For extra bragging rights, raise your own seedlings in 55mm pots to sit in the cups.

Keep in mind

■ Wear gloves and a mask when handling mulch, compost and potting mix. Take care when selecting your plants as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and check their suitability for your region, as some may be classified as weeds in certain states and territories.

■ Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

■ Wash teacups and saucers thoroughly before re-using.

The variety of seasonal garden decor items from Northcote Pottery can help you bring colour and life into indoor and outdoor spaces. Use the textured pots and vibrant planters to make a beautiful display of fresh spring flowers and herbs as well as a charming space for the birds.

Outdoor entertaining

Gardens help to set the tone in any home – think country cottage charm, earthy Mediterranean scenes or clean contemporary lines. It’s easy to elevate your home and garden design and make it uniquely your own by creating a vibrant outdoor entertaining space full of flowers potted in a collection of Northcote Pottery Precinct Lite Egg Pots These terrazzo-look, lightweight pots in white provide a sleek base for a variety of bright blooms, their neutral tone highlighting the vivid spring colours. Fill the pots with classic roses

and salvia and cluster them around a paved patio for a traditional English-garden aesthetic. Or try quick-growing Marguerite daisies, butterfly bush and native violet for a burst of brilliance in a more relaxed style. Using a selection of Precinct Lite pots, available in three sizes (32cm, 45cm and 50cm, it’s simple to create a space for you and your guests to relax in.

Growing greenery

Contrasting beautifully with the neutral tones of the Precinct Lite egg pots, a glossy glaze of deep green over earthy terracotta makes the Northcote Pottery Holland Planters a striking addition to any spring space. In sizes ranging from 24cm to 45cm, these planters are just right for housing a variety of Mediterranean flowers and herbs, such as lavender, rosemary or even small olive or citrus trees, to evoke the relaxed vibes of sun-soaked shores.

Indoor gardening

Lift the look of your interiors with a burst of brightness from flowers and foliage potted up in the Northcote Pottery Paloma Egg Pot in Cream. These pots are a great way to enjoy springtime vibes every day. Filled with blooms or trailing greenery, they’ll bring colour and charm to any indoor space, whether they’re placed in a bedroom, bathroom or used as a home for fragrant – and handy – herbs in the kitchen.

Forest bathing

Throw out the welcome mat for a host of feathered friends by putting an elegant Northcote Pottery Primo Miami Bird Bath in your garden. Glazed in deep Forest Green to match the tone of the Holland planters, this terracotta bird bath is sure to attract your human guests’ eyes and admiration as much as it does the birds.

THE BLOCK 2025: DESIGN LOOKBOOK

Bedroom spaces for kids and bathroom spaces for adults. Reno show room inspo you can make happen with Bunnings.

Children’s rooms are an amazing opportunity to flex creative muscles – and the teams flexed hard, coming up with loads of style tips to steal and inspirational ideas for smalls, tweens and almost-adults

alike. Venturing into the bathroom, the teams were inevitably inspired by location – Daylesford is Victoria’s spa central – creating wash spaces as soothing as a long, hot bath and as luxurious as a week-long spa escape.

Inner circle Like this look? Make it happen with Bunnings. Seat: SpecRite hevea multi-use panel. Ribbed panel: Porta contours lining board in Tasmanian Oak Ripple.

KIDS’ ROOMS

Imaginations ran wild as the teams created two magical bedrooms apiece.

Designing fantasy rooms for minis is one thing, but the teams had to temper their whimsy with a dose of practicality, bearing in mind that the rooms might ultimately be used for all ages. Britt and Taz summed up the dilemma: “Daylesford is the spa capital of Australia, it’s also known as the Airbnb capital, so we wanted to ensure that these rooms could be presented as spaces for adults as well.”

HEAD OF THE CLASS

While sophistication was valued, the rooms had to have magic, too. Some teams achieved this through details such as bedheads, which ranged from subtle nib walls to Han and Can’s padded arch: “We had so much fun experimenting with shapes, textures, and even LED lighting to create headboards that double as art pieces. They’re playful but polished, adding just the right amount of whimsy and wow!” Emma and Ben took architectural daring to a new level with their circle niche, which they designed with their teen selves in mind. “We imagined this space to be the complete dream room goals of a teenage boy or girl. We wanted the space to feel unique, edgy, memorable and cosy.”

WONDER WALLS

Many teams used colour and pattern to weave a spell that would enchant kids of all ages – as well as tick the ‘country living’ box for the judges!

Sonny and Alicia nailed a traditional look with tartan wallpaper, while

Emma and Ben sought inspiration from native flora, commissioning local artist Steph Brooks to create a floral artwork to be printed on wallpaper. Britt and Taz took their design off the wall with a 3D Gyprock feature that represents the rolling hills of Daylesford.

EXPERT ADVICE

Kids rooms aren’t all fun and games, of course, and the teams had to tick off practical considerations as well. Sonny and Alicia went straight to the experts: “We actually called our kids and asked them what they wanted and incorporated those ideas, like our daughter wanted somewhere to read and to do her make-up.” Desk set-ups were considered, as well as ample storage and play space for littlies.

LIGHT BRIGADE

With all the functions served by a kid’s room – play, reading, relaxing, study – thoughtful lighting was an essential inclusion. Nailing natural light was a challenge, solved with the addition of huge Velux skylights. Robby and Mat say, “It brought in a flood of natural light, added a real sense of height, and started what would become a design theme carried through the rest of the house.” Table and desk lamps ticked off the task lighting for most teams, while others got creative with strip lights, using them for ambience (under shelves for Emma and Ben, and behind a pelmet for Sonny and Alicia) and task lighting (in the desk space inspired by Sonny and Alicia’s daughter).

HUES TALKING
British Paints Blue Daze. Wallpapers by Grafico, floral design by Steph Brooks.

British Paints is the official paint partner of The Block 2025, and exclusive to Bunnings. Head in store to find the hues you love! Britt and Taz used Gyprock plasterboard to create this 3D feature wall. Their colour selections – British Paints Hot Jam and Mollusk Shell – were inspired by warm tones in the Daylesford hills.

Walls of storage were an opportunity to bring in pops of colour, and desk spaces for studying teens.

CABINET BRIEFING

Judge Darren Palmer loved Britt and Taz’s work. “This colour scheme is neutral but interesting. It’s the mood you want to set in a kid’s room.”

Complementary wallpaper with a timber trim was used to create the nib wall bedhead.

Sonny and Alicia matched their tartan paper with walls in British Paints Legacy Rose.

PAPER CHASE

Blank walls were an opportunity for creativity, with some teams using wallpaper to express their style, as in Sonny and Alicia’s blue tartan bedroom, with British Paints Green Result balancing the pattern with a rich neutral. Artworks were also carefully chosen.

“I just think this is beautiful,” says judge Shaynna Blaze.

“The equestrian and modern country feel, it’s absolutely gorgeous.”

The judges loved Han and Can’s colour palette, which includes walls in British Paints Blue Daze. “I’m getting Wes Anderson vibes. Midcentury Modernist, quirky and pastel,” says Shaynna Blaze.

BATHING BEAUTY

Looking to the colours and textures on their doorstep, the teams turned family bathrooms and ensuites alike into sanctuary spaces.

“We leaned into soft curves, playful colour and lots of natural light to make it feel both welcoming and full of personality” Han and Can/contestants

With imaginations fired by the country setting and Daylesford’s reputation as Victoria’s spa central, the teams sought to create luxe bathing experiences within their home’s family bathrooms and ensuites.

COLOURS OF THE COUNTRY

Inspired by the gently undulating countryside, green played a starring role in several of the bathrooms, introducing a splash of colour that walks the line between playful and calming. Toasty taupe and travertine were also repeated across the houses, setting a grounding base of earthy warmth. Robby and Mat expressed it well, describing their 130mm square mosaic tiles: “They give the room a welcoming warmth – like a cup of coffee in the morning.”

Emma and Ben kept it natural for their main bathroom, but went deliberately bold for the ensuite, which they drenched in burgundy red. “We wanted this space to feel rich, luxe and moody.” Also edging into bolder colour territory were Han and Can, who positioned a showstopping amber resin bath as the star of their ensuite.

Emma and Ben’s concrete basins match Beaumont’s Rebels Moss structured gloss tile. Crossland Dune at rear.
Sonny and Alicia chose 2400mm x 1200 slabs of RockSalt Grey matt tile from Beaumont Tiles, “so there are virtually no grout lines.”
Globe sconces featured in many bathrooms, paired here with Granada Terra structured matt tile from Beaumont Tiles – exclusive tile supplier to The Block since 2013.

Robby and Mat nailed the contemporary country look, mixing Beaumont’s Tetra Pavilion Sesame Matt tile with timber elements.

“Unexpected, indulgent and a little bit cheeky” was the vision for Han and Can’s ensuite, the star of which is an amber resin bath on a platform.

A nib wall and glass screens divide the wet zone in Emma and Ben’s bathroom.

LIGHT PLAY

Skylights, softly reflective tiles and frameless shower screens were used across all five houses to play with natural light. Robby and Mat used fluted glass in their main bathroom. “The soft ripples of the fluted glass not only add a subtle layer of texture and elegance, but also create visual depth,” they say. “It diffuses light beautifully, maintains privacy, and makes the bathroom feel significantly more open without sacrificing style.”

Wall sconces and strip lighting cover tasks and ambience in Britt and Taz’s glowing ensuite.

VANITY FLAIR

Lights, mirrors, action! Carefully considered vanity zones make or break a bathroom.

ABOVE Han and Can united a walnut, amber resin and travertine palette with James Hardie ‘Groove’ wall lining in British Paints Plastic Fantastic.

ABOVE Sonny and Alicia twisted the palette in the ensuite, teaming walnut with concrete basins and greige tiles.

“We’re all about inspiring customers to give their home projects a red hot go, and The Block brings home renovation inspiration to millions each year“

Justine Mills/Head of marketing, Bunnings

ABOVE Judge Darren Palmer loved Sonny and Alicia’s “bronze, bronze, bronze” palette, combining a walnut vanity, warm tiles and brass tapware.

Britt and Taz created a day spa vibe with gorgeous natural light and a trio of tiles: Tetra Juma Claypot gloss, slender Channelle Travertine natural embossed honed mosaic to handle the curved seat, and Living Terracotta textured tile on the floor.

SPA SANCTUARY

Designing a bathroom that feels like a spa retreat is a subtle art. In addition to the nature-inspired colour palettes, the teams universally used rounded edges in their designs, softening the hard angles that often dominate bathrooms with organic curves in vanities, basins, shower screens and lighting. Britt and Taz, and Emma and Ben, put their carpentry teams to the test in creating curved bases for tiles

– the former team in the shower bench above, and the latter team in a curved hero wall in their ensuite wet area. “The original tiles we had everywhere else could not achieve the curved shape, so we had to pick a different tile that would sit on the curved section of the wall,“ Emma explains. “We picked a natural pink stone tile (see page 42), which actually made the curved wall more of a hero.”

SHOWER WITH COMPLIMENTS

The teams each embraced the idea of the shower as a daily spa experience, using generous floor areas, feature skylights and architectural details to make the shower spaces feel indulgent. Britt and Taz aced the resort feel with a curved bench. “Our favourite part of the bathroom was the curved seat in the shower,” says the duo. “You can really sit there with the showers on and unwind after a big day.”

MAGIC TOUCH

Texture was a favourite feature of the judges across the bathrooms, reinforcing the feeling of multi-sensory indulgence. Britt sums up the concept: “I’m a strong believer that you don’t need bold colours everywhere to create interest and that you can create a beautiful space through textures.” Fluted timber and glass were among the touchable elements in their main bathroom, while other teams played with handmade tiles, concrete basins and the softest towels. “We wanted to create a space that makes you say ‘wow’,” say Emma and Ben of their burgundy-drenched ensuite.

Brass and walnut combine with Home Kitkat Grape Gloss and Bedrock Rosso Natural Marble Tumbled tiles, both from Beaumont, to complete the palette of old-world luxury in Emma and Ben’s ensuite.

Coastal calm STYLE RESET

As the saying goes, nature does it better. So it’s no surprise that we tend to lean towards colours and textures drawn from the environment. For those planning a new kitchen, these influences, along with practical choices around form and function, are the starting point to create an on-trend, timeless result.

Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright says this trend marks a shift away from minimalism. ”It embraces warmth, tactility and emotional connection,” she explains. “Rooted in the natural world, this palette captures the growing desire for homes that restore and soothe.”

AN EXCITING NEW PALETTE

This shift is reflected by the newest Kaboodle Kitchen colour suite of six inviting and calming shades: Cannellini, Juniper, Saltbush, Truffle Oak, Pistachio and Oyster. John Harrison, marketing manager at Kaboodle Kitchen, says it’s a carefully curated palette. “This collection is the result of two years of trend research in global and local design by the Kaboodle team,” he says. “These new nature-inspired hues encourage down-to-earth design, a connection to nature and the enjoyment of everyday kitchen moments.”

The beauty of hues inspired by the natural world is how translatable they are to any style. “Earthy tones like Truffle Oak, Oyster and Cannellini highlight the organic appeal of timber and stone – tones that feel both contemporary and timeless,” says Jane. The greens and blues of Pistachio, Saltbush and Juniper reference coastal foliage, forest canopies and vast oceans. “These elevated neutrals deepen the kitchen’s emotional resonance while maintaining visual calm,” she says. Paired with natural benchtop materials like timber and stone, these nature-inspired hues create an inviting kitchen with enduring appeal.

BRING YOUR DESIGN TO LIFE

The extensive collection from Kaboodle Kitchen makes planning your new space an easy process. In addition to the fashion-forward colours and styles on offer, there’s a broad range of cabinetry and bench surfaces to suit virtually any budget. Even better, expert kitchen design consultants are on hand (see right) to help you with everything from ideas to finished plans.

Take beachy style to another level with Cannellini, a soft beige given new life with textural finishes, touches of timber and complementary hits of gold.

PRACTICAL AND PRETTY

To make good use of space in a compact room, try the galley layout, or a single run of cabinetry plus an island – as in this kitchen, where timeless beige creates a sense of warmth and light. “We’ve showcased this neutral through a crisp V-groove profile, complemented by the textured, stone-look travertine benchtop for subtle depth and character,” explains John Harrison. “Amber gold handles bring a touch of warmth and elegance, enhancing the coastal-inspired style.”

DESIGN IDEAS

The solid American oak fixture is an important visual feature and plays a functional role, too, concealing the rangehood. The raw timber is a warm, textural inclusion, breaking up the run of overhead cabinets to create interest and a visual break.

The rich blue of Juniper brings personality plus to this open-plan, single-line kitchen, which features all the necessities without compromising on space or style.

CREATE THE PERFECT CANVAS

When you can’t hide the kitchen, make it a feature with an audacious colour choice, as in this single-line design – a layout that’s ideal in apartments, small spaces or open-plan living zones. “This blue kitchen makes a bold yet balanced statement, with Juniper doors and panels paired with a tonal blue splashback for a layered, cohesive look,” says John Harrison. Handle-free wall cabinetry and a concealed rangehood reduce visual clutter and let the colour shine, while a handy shallow shelf for cookbooks breaks the line of overheads. A round table is a stylish and space-saving counterpoint to the cabinetry lines, with pink chairs to offset the blue.

Green goals

The traditional farmhouse look is given a 21st-century update with Saltbush, an elegant forest green, while extra impact is delivered by a characterful V-groove profile.

DESIGN IDEAS

A U-shaped layout delivers lots of storage but overhead cabinetry on all sides could make the room feel closed in. Open shelving solves the problem and brings in another textural element. A farmhouse table rather than built-in island also helps with the open feel.

HOME, SWEET HOMESTEAD

Bold colour is a great choice in a large, light-filled space, as in this U-shaped kitchen where intense green cabinetry is the hero, complemented by stone-look benchtops in Biancoccino. “The striking veining introduces texture and depth,” says John Harrison. “Matt black hardware, featuring two styles of Turbo handles and Iza doorknobs, adds an extra layer of personality and contrast, enhancing the rustic yet refined aesthetic.” A freestanding cooker and complementary rangehood are perfect picks for modern farmhouse style.

country colours and timber accents create a warm and welcoming effect.

Modern moves

Pale benchtops and an open splashback lighten the impact of the luxuriously intense woodgrain of Truffle Oak, bringing warmth and character to this contemporary space.

BALANCED ELEGANCE

Deep, earthy hues throughout provide drama in this island kitchen.

“The dark, textured woodgrain pairs elegantly with the light, stone-look Salt Pan benchtops, creating a balanced and refined palette,” says John Harrison. If you have the space for it, temper the boldness of dark cabinetry with a spacious splashback and minimal shelving to channel the clean lines of Japandi style.

“Removing the wall cabinets offers a visual break from the depth of the timber, while natural tiles add a fresh, classic touch,” explains John. Within the island, areas of open shelving lend a lighter feel while retaining a functional edge. Dark handles have the effect of receding, reducing visual clutter for a cleaner look.

TUCKED AWAY AND TIDY

The trend for kitchens in 2025-26 includes a strong focus on concealed functionality, says Jane Wright. “Integrated appliances and pull-out features not only streamline the look of the space but also elevate practicality – allowing design and materiality to take centre stage,” she says.

The smart storage solutions in this kitchen include pull-out pantry shelving, a rotating two-tier corner unit, an integrated side-mount bin system and compact two-tier pull-out shelves – not forgetting a striking illuminated display unit where form beautifully meets function. ●

Seasonal stunners

Turn your garden into a springtime spectacle with bold, beautiful bloomers.

There’s something magical about the arrival of spring. The days stretch a little longer, the air turns sweeter and gardens begin to hum with new life. It’s the perfect time to refresh your outdoor space and let nature put on a dazzling show. This season, it’s all about bold colour palettes and striking displays. And if you’re keen to conjure up some nostalgic charm, you’re in luck – traditional favourites like dahlias and hydrangeas are back in fashion, proving that what’s old is new again.

LIGHT THE WAY

Getting the aspect right is crucial, advises florist and flower grower Petrina Burrill (@petrinablooms).

“Think of sunlight as food for your flowers – most blooms need at least

six hours of direct sun to perform their best,” she says. “Without enough light, you might get lots of lovely green leaves but disappointingly few flowers.” If light is limited in your backyard, horticulturist Angie Thomas from Yates recommends choosing flowering plants that prefer more sheltered spots. “Impatiens, ajuga and clivias do best in shady areas of the garden,” says Angie.

SUPERCHARGE YOUR SOIL

If you want vibrant flowers and healthy plants, you need to start from the ground up. “Flowers are only as good as the soil they’re growing in,” says Petrina. Soil that’s enriched with organic matter helps support strong roots and, ultimately, better blooms. Compost, aged

manures and worm castings are all forms of organic matter and can be dug into the soil before planting to build soil health and boost flower power. “It’s like giving your plants a daily vitamin!” says Petrina. Most flowers are ideal for growing in garden beds, but for smaller spaces, look for compact varieties that are suitable for containers. Hydrangeas, for example, can grow into medium-sized shrubs, but there are dwarf forms that are perfect for pots. Similarly, towering sunflowers and tall dahlia varieties may feel too large for pots, so go for the more compact forms instead.

IT’S PLANTING TIME

Not sure whether to start with seeds or seedlings? According to Petrina, both

Pots can be moved around to suit their requirements for sun, shade or shelter.
“Start small and enjoy the process of watching seeds transform into beautiful blooms – it never gets old!”

have their perks, and the right choice depends on your confidence, time and budget. “Seedlings are ideal for beginners because they give you that instant gratification and head start – you’ll see flowers much sooner,” she says. “They’re also more reliable if you’re nervous about germination.” However, seeds are incredibly budget friendly. “One packet can fill an entire garden bed for the cost of just a few seedlings. Plus, seeds open up a whole world of varieties you simply can’t find as seedlings.” But why choose? Use a mix of both. “Don’t be afraid to experiment!” says Petrina. Also consider including flowering perennials and shrubs in your planting. Roses, salvias, lavender, buddlejas, hibiscus, ixora and plumbago can form the backbone of your display,

helping to add more colour and vibrancy to the show.

MAXIMISE BLOOMS

To promote a long-lasting floral display, regularly feed and deadhead your flowers. “Feeding with a highpotassium fertiliser promotes healthy leaf growth and flowering,” says Angie. Combine this with deadheading (removing spent blooms), as this encourages further flowering and keeps the plants looking tidy, too. “As soon as my roses are done, it’s off with their heads!” says Petrina. Consistent watering, especially for new plantings, is essential.

Petrina recommends applying a naturally derived mulch around plantings to help retain moisture and suppress any pesky weeds.

Fast-track your floral display by planting punnets of seedlings, such as cheery pansies.
Many Australian natives have a long flowering season.

WHAT TO GROW NOW IN YOUR ZONE

It’s tempting to grow flowers outside our climate zone, but Angie Thomas advises plants do best when grown in their preferred weather range. “Gardeners in the tropics should look for warmth- and humidity-loving plants, and in cooler climates, choose those that do best in milder conditions,” she says. Of course, there are some plants which are adaptable and will grow across most, if not all, climates at this time of year.

GARDEN DESIGN TIPS

● “Creating a beautiful flower bed is like arranging a living bouquet,” says Petrina Burrill. “Start with height – tall flowers like delphiniums or foxgloves at the back, medium ones like cosmos and zinnias in the middle, and low-growing petunias, pansies or alyssum at the front.”

● For impact, plant in groups, instead of single flowers dotted around the garden. Petrina likes to plant in odd-numbered groups of three or five. “It looks more natural than single or even-numbered plants,” she says.

● To create a harmonious colour palette, Angie suggests choosing plants with flowers in key colour combinations. “Soothing blues and purples go well together, orange and blue are complementary colours, while the combination of yellow,

greenish-yellow and green flowers and foliage creates a beautifully balanced look,” she says.

● To fill in large gaps, spreading flowers like petunias offer great value, says Angie. “They’re fast to establish and cover space quickly. Easy-to-grow seeds like cosmos, zinnias and sunflowers provide loads of colour for very little effort, while flowers like alyssum often self-seed, creating free future plants with no extra work,” she says.

● Plant a striking display in a pot using the classic ‘thriller, filler, spiller’ method: choose a bold, eye-catching plant for height and drama (thriller), surround it with mid-sized plants to add body and colour (filler), and let trailing plants cascade over the edge for softness and movement (spiller). ●

SPRING GARDEN PLANNER

There is lots to do as your patch wakes from its long winter sleep.

Words Adam Woodhams

The most fabulous season of the gardening year is here for most of us! Spring is an exciting time of jubilant renewal, as plants from the smallest annuals to the tallest trees burst into bloom and throw out vigorous new growth. Even non-gardeners can be smitten, letting out an occasional ‘wow!’ at this wonderful show. For those with green thumbs, it’s an inspiring and satisfying time when they reap the rewards of all the care they’ve lavished on their plants and gardens. Follow our weekend planning guide to keep your piece of paradise looking awesome through spring and in tiptop shape for summer.

Kick off your garden glow-up with a good clean and tidy.

All that growth after a winter hiatus means fertilising is a priority.

■ With the arrival of spring, your plants and lawn will be chewing through their stored energy – so now is a good time to top up the tank. For hassle-free feeding, apply a controlledrelease fertiliser that will provide a steady supply of nutrients. These come in a

range of blends formulated as ‘all purpose’ or for different plant types such as natives, ornamentals, citrus and vegetables.

■ For the lawn, use a hose-on or granular fertiliser, ensuring you choose a product that’s suitable for your grass type.

■ It’s important to pay attention to what goes on beneath the surface, too. Microorganisms in the soil convert the nutrients from fertilisers, enabling plants to feed more efficiently. An application of an organic fertiliser such as manure or compost, plus mulch to help retain moisture, will give those soil workers a boost.

WEEKEND

Renovate the vegetable patch and give the yard a spring-clean.

■ If you’ve been holding on to the last of your winter vegies, it’s time to get ruthless and pull them out. Then improve the soil to suit your new crops by forking through appropriate composts or manures, water well and leave to sit for a week before you start planting.

■ Get busy tidying. Post winter, you’ll find there can be all manner of jobs to be done. Remove leaves and fallen twigs and branches from garden areas and give paths, patios, decks and

■ To give your soil a serious kickstart, apply a probiotic formula such as Neutrog Popul8 to boost beneficial bacteria. Healthy, biologically active soil will also help reduce nutrient runoff into surrounding waterways or bushland.

Keep in mind

■ Wear gloves and a mask when handling mulch, compost and potting mix and also when pruning, along with long sleeves, as the leaves and sap of some plants can be a skin irritant and cause allergic reactions.

■ After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating.

■ Take care when selecting plants as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and check their suitability for your region, as some may be classified as weeds in certain states and territories.

■ Store garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

driveways a pressure wash if they’ve become mucky and slippery over winter. Remember to dial down the pressure on treated pine decks.

■ Give the lawn a goingover. Chances are your grass is looking a wee bit scruffy after winter. Be vigorous with a steel spring tine lawn rake to pull out any dead material.

■ Deadhead flowers as they finish. This will keep the garden looking neat and, in many cases, bring on a second flush of flowers.

THE POTTED KITCHEN GARDEN

Many traditional garden vegetables can be grown in pots, even the tallest of tomatoes. Follow these tips to create a thriving kitchen garden.

● Ensure pots are a suitable size for the mature plants. They need to be big enough not to become top-heavy when the plant becomes fully grown.

● Use a premium-quality potting mix – there are special blends available for vegetables and herbs, as well as organically certified options.

● Group plants with similar needs together in one container. For example, leafy crops such as lettuce and spinach will grow best with reliable moisture and regular feeding. If in doubt, check their labels or seed packets.

● Grow climbing vegies in larger pots or containers. Securely position a wire trellis or fan in the pot before planting.

● Tomatoes are an ideal choice for growing in pots, and range from climbing, dwarf or bush varieties to tumbling forms for hanging baskets. But bear in mind that most tomatoes require some support as they grow.

● Regular liquid feeding is a must for container-grown herbs and vegies. Choose a nutrient-rich formula that’s packed with beneficial microorganisms to bring potting mix to life.

WEEKEND

For healthy soil and plants, water well and wisely, and make the most of mulch.

■ The ground can be slow to dry over winter, but this can change very quickly come spring. Adjust your watering patterns to suit, always checking soil conditions before watering.

■ When hand-watering, focus on the plants, not

entire beds, to help save water. Avoid wetting foliage and flowers, particularly more delicate blossoms, as this can lead to fungal problems which may result in an early loss of blooms.

■ With the summer months fast approaching, now’s the time to add or top up mulch to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health. To give your plants an extra boost, you can spread manure or compost first, then mulch over the top (see ‘Mulch musts’, below).

Tip: If you plan to use one of the more pungent pelletised fertilisers, spread it before you apply mulch to help block the smell. ●

Start planting edibles and introduce some colour for new-season wow.

■ One of the most economical ways to grow vegetables and herbs is from seed. Check the packet for instructions, as many can be sown directly into garden beds.

■ If starting seed in containers, sow in a quality seed-raising mix in small pots or, to make life easier and reduce risk of transplant shock, use biodegradable

peat pots. With these, you can plant the entire pot once your seedlings are ready to go into the ground.

■ Add a splash of colour. Many flowers are easy to grow from seed. You might improve your harvest of fruiting veg, too, as flowers attract pollinators that will visit the blooms on food plants (although you don’t really want flowers on leafy or root veg – harvest those before flowers appear).

■ Be inspired by the huge range of plants now in store and introduce new colour plus interest to the garden. Look out for flowering beauties such as azaleas and rhododendrons, or fruiting favourites including citrus and passionfruit.

Mulch has an incredible number of benefits. Not only does it conserve soil moisture and help keep soil temperatures more consistent, it also reduces and slows water runoff, which in turn reduces soil erosion. Plus, it adds nutrients and organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. Here’s how to make the most of this invaluable extra layer.

● Always water well before and after spreading mulch.

● In areas where weeds have been a problem,

place newspaper (six to eight pages thick) or cardboard over the ground and wet it well before spreading mulch.

● Aim for a mulch depth of about 5cm in vegie and flower beds and keep it at least 5cm clear of plant stems to prevent rot.

● When mulching a new vegetable or flower bed with lucerne or pea straw, do it before planting, then pull the mulch back to create planting holes. This is much easier than trying to mulch around tiny seedlings.

Ground control

Embrace nature’s way of filling the gaps with these low-growing beauties.

PROSTRATE GREVILLEAS (Grevillea spp.)

These ground-hugging natives are tough and fast growing – ideal for filling in large bare patches, spilling over walls or covering embankments. Depending on the cultivar, they have vibrant toothbrush- or spider-like flowers in shades of red, pink, cream or orange. Drought-tolerant once established, grevilleas like full sun and well-draining soil.

CREEPING BOOBIALLA (Myoporum parvifolium)

This low, spreading shrub with long, trailing stems grows quickly to form a dense, weed-suppressing carpet. Its small, fleshy green leaves are smothered in tiny white or pale-pink flowers from spring through summer, attracting bees and other beneficial bugs. Suitable for most climates, it’s best planted in a spot that gets full sun.

LOROPETALUM ‘LITTLE CHINA RUBY’

(Loropetalum chinense ‘Little China Ruby’)

A compact shrub with purple-plum foliage. Smaller and denser than other varieties, it’s a lovely choice for low borders, mass planting or containers. In spring, it produces bright-pink, tasselled flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark foliage. Plant in well-draining soil in a sunny or partly shaded position. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage a tidy form.

TAR

BUSH (Eremophila glabra ‘Kalbarri Carpet’)

The soft, silvery-grey leaves of this native contrast beautifully with the tubular yellow flowers it produces in spring and summer. Tough once established, it spreads low and wide, making it useful as a groundcover or for cascading over retaining walls. It is happiest in a sunny position. Feed with a native fertiliser in spring. ●

LAWN & ORDER

Here’s how to achieve lush grass, healthy hedges and neat edges. Words and photography Adam Woodhams

Spring is without doubt one of the most exciting seasons in the garden, with beautiful colour and movement everywhere you look. Part and parcel of this dynamic time is the need to give extra care to lawns, edges and hedges, so be prepared to get planting, trimming and nurturing!

LAWNS

POST-WINTER CARE

Coming out of the cooler months, lawns can look less than their best. Many are comprised of warm-season grasses so, while they survive winter, they do need a little help to get back into top form for the warmer seasons. Get it tidy Set your mower to a little above the regular cutting height and, with the catcher fitted, run it over the lawn. This will effectively ‘vacuum’ up all the loose debris, leaves, twigs and so on, giving you an instant tidy-up and allowing you to better evaluate the lawn’s condition. Rake hard Use a steel-tine leaf rake and vigorously rake your lawn to remove dead material from the thatch – that’s the layer between the grass blades and soil surface. Let air in Soil can become compacted by winter rain and frosts, affecting grass growth. To remedy this, Bunnings Greenlife buyer Mill Wallasvaara advises aerating your lawn (making small holes in it). “You can do this with specialty tools, aeration sandals or even the humble pitchfork,” she

GOOD SAVE!

Feeding the soil, not just the grass, boosts soil health by increasing the population of beneficial microorganisms. This in turn improves soil quality, reducing water and nutrient run-off, and increases the effectiveness of your lawn food, meaning less waste.

says. “This will encourage nutrients and water to reach the roots where they can really make a difference.”

Mow lightly Don’t cut too deep and set your mower on mulching mode.

Feed well A few days after the first post-winter mow, apply a quality lawn food. Mill recommends using lawn fertiliser to give a much-needed energy boost. “And if your grass is loving the extra care, you can always feed it again five or six weeks later to keep the momentum going,” she says. Also apply a soil tonic after feeding to help stimulate and enhance populations of soil microorganisms.

REPAIR THE DAMAGE

Check out these common issues and how to combat them. Threadbare grass This is reasonably common after a cold winter, especially if it’s been excessively wet or dry. If the lawn is still showing green shoots, then feeding and watering will speed its recovery. Or consider oversowing

Use the flat back of a landscape rake to spread lawn top-dressing soil. This is an easy way to help thicken your lawn.

with a seed mix to fill the gaps while your remaining lawn rejuvenates. Top dressing can also be useful to help a lawn thicken up again.

Compaction points Areas of high-impact wear, such as the bottom of a flight of steps, can end up with compacted soil, making it difficult for grass to survive. Use a garden fork to fluff up the soil a little and allow the grass to grow back through it or, if need be, remove a little soil and buy a roll of turf to lay as a patch.

Poor drainage Use a garden fork to create a series of holes over the area, then rake coarse sand over the top of them. This will improve both drainage and aeration. If needed, spread lawn seed, too.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TURF

Sometimes you might need to replace an entire lawn or repair a large section. The simplest way to do this is with roll or slab turf. There are many turf varieties, so it’s important

TACKLE THE WEEDS

Lawn weeds look unsightly, can rob your grass of valuable nutrients and moisture and also create a slipping hazard. As many weeds are annual plants, they can also cause bare patches – the weed grows vigorously during its season, smothering the grass, then dies back, leaving a bare spot.

Get physical Larger weeds are often quite easy to remove manually with the right weeding tools. This method is ideal if you want to keep chemical use to a minimum, and tools such as weed pullers mean you don’t even have to bend over to weed. You can use them in other areas of the garden, too.

Complete coverage For problem weeds and larger areas, the simplest solution is to use a ‘weed-and-feed’ type product, in either hoseon or granular form. These contain a selective broadleaf weedkiller that won’t harm your lawn, and liquid fertiliser for a fast green-up.

If you have a buffalo lawn, make sure you choose a buffalo-safe product.

to take the time to select the right one for your place. The main starting point is whether you are in a cool or warm climate. Other important considerations when choosing a variety are level of wear and tear, degree of sun and shade, local conditions such as rainfall and temperature extremes, and type of underlying soil (such as sandy or heavy clay).

The best lawn grasses for warmer regions are the ever popular buffalo varieties such as ‘Sir Walter’, fine-leafed couch, modern kikuyus and, increasingly, new forms of zoysia. These are all running grasses. In areas with cold winters, clumping grasses such as fescue or ryegrass make the best lawns.

If you are in a coastal situation, then your options are narrowed somewhat, but those with recognised salt tolerance are the buffalos, including ‘Sir Walter’, and the native zoysia ‘Nara’. Still not sure of the best option? “Check the Bunnings website regarding different turf varieties,” advises Mill.

HEDGES

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

Hedges are one of the favourite building blocks of landscape designers. They can be used to create ‘garden rooms’, to screen undesirable views or as a living, breathing fence. They may be only shin-high garden-defining borders, or head height or more to provide privacy or compartmentalisation of different garden areas.

Bear in mind that a hedge is a long-term planting and will become a major feature. “Be mindful of flowers and fruits that hedging plants may grow as these can be messy in certain garden situations, like next to a path or pool area,” says Mill Wallasvaara. Think carefully about what you want your new hedge to achieve, then select a variety to suit. Here are some considerations.

● Colour of foliage.

● Texture of leaves – whether they look soft or coarse.

● Leaf size – smaller leaves are generally visually softer.

● Density – how thick you want it – and height.

● Seasonal features such as flowers, berries or coloured new growth.

● Rate of growth – how long it will take to achieve what you need the hedge for.

● Care requirements including soil, water and feeding, and maintenance such as pruning.

YEAR-ROUND MAINTENANCE

Hedges need a little more care than most regular garden plants, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Pruning Regular pruning is essential to encourage density and maintain the desired shape and height. Invest in a quality pair of hedging shears. Telescopic shears are ideal for taller hedges. If you have a lot of pruning to do, consider a battery-powered trimmer. Bunnings Garden Power Tool buyer Alex Pal says battery-powered tools offer a number of benefits. “These include lightweight design, easier storage and enhanced safety features,” he says. They are available across all brands as kits or ‘skin only’ (battery sold separately). Tip: Give flowering hedges such as sasanqua camellia or murraya a light trim after flowering.

Feeding As hedges tend to be planted more densely and are regularly pruned, they have higher nutrient requirements. Feed regularly at the recommended rates with a quality fertiliser. Feed the soil, too, with applications of a probiotic product such as GOGO Juice from Neutrog.

Watering Ensure your hedge gets enough water, especially when newly planted and also in hot, dry weather. Tip: Install a water-efficient drip irrigation system and run it on a timer to save you time, water and money*. Keep your hedge well mulched, too, but don’t pile mulch up against the stems.

Buxus is the classic

small-to-medium formal hedging plant.

A QUESTION OF SIZE

Here’s how to get the look you’re after.

Size If you want a 1.5-metre hedge, don’t get a variety that only grows to 1.5 metres, as it will take too long to reach your desired height. Instead, select a 2-metre species. Plant spacing To encourage a nice thick hedge, spacing is key. For varieties that grow to two metres wide, for example, plants should be around 1.5-1.75 metres apart. Density Tip prune early and often. This means lightly trimming to remove the outer leaves only. This encourages side branching which will increase density. The best hedges are pruned little and reasonably often.

EDGES

THE GREAT DIVIDE

Neat edges between lawns and garden beds can generally be achieved with a line trimmer or a spade. However you can make it easier for yourself by installing garden edging.

The old-school method, the spaded edge, will cost you nothing more than your time. A garden spade is used to cut vertically into the turf in a straight or curved line. Then a strip of turf and a little soil is removed, leaving the garden bed soil sloped towards the lawn at an angle of around 45 degrees. This creates a trench around five centimetres deep that prevents the grass from escaping.

If you wish to install a pre-made edge, there’s a wide range of products available, so you’re sure to find one that suits your look and budget. Here are some options. Timber H4 treated pine in 150mm x 25mm lengths is cost-effective, easy to install and quite durable. It’s ideal for straight areas or gentle curves but doesn’t bend well. Ensure any timber you use is H4 treated (for use in or on the ground) as a minimum.

Plastic Durable, super-flexible and economical, plastic roll-pack edging can be a real problem solver. It’s even flexible enough to create circular tree guards.

Metal Durable and long-lasting, metal edging also comes in a range of finishes. Some types are intended mainly for straight uses, however many are suitable for curved situations. Metal edging is the most resistant to damage from mowers and trimmers.

Concrete and masonry Undeniably the most durable type of edging. Choose from pre-formed products or construct your own from bricks or pavers. In most cases, they are bedded into mortar or sand and cement to create a more permanent fixture – this makes this type of edging the most labour intensive to install.

Tip: Edging helps reduce the need to use herbicides, as you’ll have less problems with grass and weeds escaping into other garden areas.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

A glorious carpet of green grass looks its best with neat and well-maintained borders. Depending on your type of edging, here are the tools to help you keep it looking sharp. Hard-surface border such as concrete or paving

● T-handled half-moon edger

● Garden spade

● Long-handled star-wheel or rotary disc edger

● Motorised specialised edge trimmer

● Line trimmer Spaded edge

● T-handled half-moon edger

● Garden spade

● Line trimmer

Raised edge

● T-handled half-moon edger

● Garden spade

● Line trimmer

Tip: For short edges or fiddly spots, use battery-powered, interchangeable-blade grass and hedge shears.

A spaded edge keeps grass from crashing the garden bed party!

If you have a tree in your lawn, the simplest way to keep the spot around it neat and tidy while avoiding damage to the trunk is to install a box or ring border tree surround.

● Plastic roll-pack edging can be cut to size and staked in place around existing or newly planted trees.

● Metal tree and landscape rings come in a range of finishes with some suitable for installation around established trees.

● H4 treated pine edging can be cut to size and staked in place to create custom surrounds.

Monkey business

If you’re looking for a fun pet for the kids that’s really easy to care for, consider a seamonkey! These small aquatic creatures are seriously misnamed – they’re not monkeys and they don’t live in the sea. They’re actually a special type of brine shrimp (Artemia salina) and you buy the dehydrated eggs as part of a sea-monkey kit, which also includes water purifier and food.

All you need is a clear tank, often included in the kit, ideally with a deep base. Use distilled or bottled water (not tap), stir in water purifier, then 24 hours later add the eggs. Put the tank in a warm, bright position and after a couple of days the sea-monkeys will start to hatch. Instant pets (almost)!

After that, you’ll need to aerate the water at least weekly and feed the sea-monkeys every week. Then sit back and watch them grow and, if you’re lucky, breed.

TAKE A SHOT

Vaccinations are a key part of responsible pet ownership and could save your pet’s life. Before bringing a new pet home, check with a vet what yours needs, so they don’t miss a jab. Dog and cat vaccines are split into two groups: core and non-core. The core vaccine a dog should receive every three years is called the C3, which covers canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus and canine parvovirus. Puppies have their first vaccination at around six weeks, then every two to four weeks until they have had at least three vaccinations and are at least 16 weeks old. They should not go to public places until they are fully vaccinated. Cats receive the F3 vaccination that covers feline parvovirus, feline calicivirus and feline herpesvirus. Kittens follow the same timings as puppies for their first lot of vaccinations. The non-core vaccines depend on where you live and what your pet does. For example, if you board your dog, you might need the kennel cough vaccination. Your vet can advise on what’s best for your pet.

HOT DIGGITY DOG

Here’s why dogs dig and how you can divert their energy elsewhere.

As much as it may seem like it, a dog that digs isn’t aiming to destroy your garden. Our furry friends decide to excavate for a number of reasons. Veterinarian Charlene Carig of the Animal Welfare League NSW says digging is normal behaviour for dogs. “Digging fulfills their natural foraging behaviour,” she explains. “Physically, it builds their abdominal and shoulder muscles and is extremely enriching for them because they may uncover new smells. Dogs live in a smell-based world so new ones are full of satisfying information for them.”

UNDERSTAND THE INSTINCT

Aside from instinct, there are many reasons why your dog digs – and figuring them out could be the key to saving your garden! Environmental factors could be driving your furry bulldozer. If they don’t have suitable shelter, dogs may dig a hole to cool themselves during hot weather, or seek protection from the cold, wet or wind. They may also be hunting prey such as rats or rabbits, ensuring

their food and prized toys are kept safe, or simply having fun!

There might be emotional issues behind their burrowing, too. Dr Carig says dogs often dig to relieve boredom or distract themselves from anxiety. “Being in the yard for long periods at a time is not enough to meet your dog’s needs for physical exercise, social time, mental stimulation and enrichment,” she says. “Digging often becomes the only interesting thing they can do.”

Your dog may also dig along the fence line to escape, either because they’re not desexed and acting on the drive to find a mate, or they are anxious about being left alone.

TRY THE ART OF REDIRECTION

If you’re sure your dog’s physical, social and comfort needs are being met but they are still digging, scolding or punishing them is not the answer. “Instead, focus on creating a life that is more enriching and interesting,” suggests Dr Carig. Look at ways to engage your dog, physically and mentally – try more walks, food puzzles and toys, and games of fetch.

Altering the environment can also help. “Place fencing and/or rocks to create a visual boundary to help train your dog where it is not acceptable to dig,” says Dr Carig. Barriers such as weed mat, dense planting or chunky mulch may deter some dogs. “However, a dog that is determined to dig will dig,” she warns.

GIVE THEM LICENCE TO DIG

Allow your persistent digger to dig in one dedicated space. This area could be a permanent pit in the yard or a portable container such as a large plastic clam shell. Fill the pit with loose sandy soil and bury exciting items such as toys and treats to encourage them to dig in the right place.

Then, put your dog on a lead and walk around the yard. “When they dig in an unwanted spot, say, ‘No!’ in a firm voice and lead them to their special digging area,” advises Dr Carig. When your dog digs where they’re supposed to, use lots of positive reinforcement such as extra treats and praise to motivate them to keep them coming back.

TOP DIY TIP

“Give it a go – l’m 60 years old and l designed and built my front yard from scratch. Push yourself to learn!”

BEST OUTDOOR PROJECT

When Kathy set out to overhaul the front of her home, she had specific goals in mind. “I wanted to modernise the facade, add a low-maintenance garden and create an area where we could entertain or relax. Plus we needed a path next to the narrow driveway to improve access for my husband, who uses a mobility scooter,” she explains.

And the judges agreed that she nailed it on all counts. Jane Wright says, “This transformation delivers serious street appeal. The new path, stacked-stone pillars and arbour create a welcoming and functional entrance, while the rendered and painted exterior has given the home a fresh, contemporary edge. What a way to make a first impression!”

Kathy tackled her reno with her Ryobi tools, lots of landscaping supplies, building materials and plants from Bunnings. “This was a mammoth task that took me almost a year. I did my research and planning and a lot of the labour. The only assistance I had was a bricklayer and my neighbour holding up the posts when building the pergola. l can’t believe how much I learnt!”

ABOVE “To define the border of the artificial turf lawn and get the desired curves for the new garden, I used corten edging and Jack Oxy-Shield round raised beds,” says Kathy (Workshop member @Kn140964).

BEST RENTER-FRIENDLY PROJECT

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, and that holds true for these mosaic side tables.

“We’d bought beautiful outdoor lounges but they were an awkward size, and we just couldn’t seem to find tables the right size and height to go with them. I’d seen mosaic tables online and absolutely loved the look, so decided to make my own,” says Alicia.

After measuring up, she selected her supplies from Bunnings and got to work with her power tools. The sturdy leg frames were made from 42mm x 19mm

DAR pine, and the tops plus edging from 6mm MDF. The tables were glued and screwed together, then sanded and painted. The final touch was to attach the Decor8 ‘Victorian Print’ glass mosaic tile sheets and grout them.

This bespoke build was appreciated by the judges. Fiona Dawson says, “These outdoor side tables are spot on! The design is sleek and contemporary, perfectly complemented by a well-considered colour palette. Thoughtfully crafted and beautifully executed.”

Alicia, WA

“Make sure your surface is completely flat before gluing your tiles. I originally glued them without realising there were imperfections in the painted top. I quickly removed them before they had dried, sanded the surface flat and re-glued. Lesson learnt!”

BEST SMALL PROJECT

So many of us dream of a glam walk-in robe, and this creative couple conjured a space to truly inspire. “When Derek and I designed our wardrobe, we wanted it to be more than just a place to store clothes,” says Claire.

Flexi Storage flatpacks were used to create two zones: an L-shaped section and a vanity. Adding trim gave the cabinetry a built-in look and a stone slab elevated the vanity. However the real stand-out is the lighting. Recessed downlights were installed, but the magic came from Mirabella LED strips.

Judge Tom Neilly agrees: “The strip lighting beautifully contrasts the black feature

Powder rooms tend to be pretty plain, but Kirsty wanted hers to be a talking point. “This is the first room you see when you walk up our stairs and I wanted it to pack a punch. A space that, for the short time you are in there, transports you to a luxe hotel. To achieve my vision I used the technique of colour drenching,” says Kirsty.

She installed Easycraft panels and dado rail, then painted the walls and ceiling with Taubmans Endure low sheen in Painted Turtle. “I applied four coats – more is better than less with a dark colour.” These bold choices hit the mark with the judges.

Judge Fiona Dawson agrees and says, “The colour palette is warm and inviting, while the subtle textures and linear details in the tiles and VJ cladding bring depth and visual interest. SORT ’N’ STORE

Chase away the winter cobwebs and make your place spring-ready with these time-saving tips from the pros.

The moment spring hits, most of us get the itch to refresh our homes, but where to start when you’re short on time and don’t want to blow the budget? Here, we break it down into three manageable parts: clean, store and organise. We asked the experts for their most practical strategies – the ones that actually work in busy family homes. And if you can wrangle the rest of the household into helping, you’ll power through it in no time!

Boxing clever

Get your wardrobe under control with stylish stackable containers.

1CLEAN

Forget trying to tackle your whole home in one go. The smartest way to kick off your spring clean, says John Sarandis of Clean Freaks Australia, is to begin with whatever space looks the messiest – often the kitchen or living room. “When you clear visible clutter, it gives you a real sense of progress,” he says. “It also frees up surfaces, so you can get stuck into a proper deep clean.”

Tools matter, too. “A good set of microfibre cloths is essential – they lift grime without harsh chemicals and work on nearly every surface,” advises John. “And I wouldn’t be without an electric scrubber. It’s brilliant for grout, stovetops and showers – anywhere you’d usually need elbow grease.”

Work methodically and start from the top: begin by cleaning rangehoods, cupboards and overhead lights before moving to benchtops, appliances and floors. Commonly missed spots? “The top of the fridge, inside the dishwasher, behind small appliances, the base of the toilet and inside the toothbrush holder,” says John.

Save money by whipping up your own cleaning solutions using pantry items you probably already have. “White vinegar and baking soda are powerful and affordable cleaning staples,” says John. “Mix equal parts vinegar and water with a few drops of essential oil for an easy all-purpose spray. Baking soda works brilliantly for deodorising carpets or scrubbing sinks.”

STORE

Decluttering is a key first step to organising and storing your gear, says professional organiser Amy Revell of The Art of Decluttering. “When you remove items you don’t need, use or love, it’s much easier to work out what needs storing,” she says. Her golden rule? “Don’t put it down, put it away. Mess is usually due to delayed decisions.” Smart storage solutions can make a big difference in tackling clutter, by tidying up drawers, organising benchtops and streamlining entryways. And there are products to suit every space, from flexible tubs and drawer units to wall-mounted solutions.

For pantries and bathrooms, clear square or rectangular containers are ideal, advises professional organiser Jo Carmichael of All Sorted Out. “They use space efficiently and let you see what’s inside,” she says. And label everything – a labelled space is a used space, she adds. If storage capacity is in short supply, think vertically. Use shelf risers, back-of-door racks or stackable bins to make the most of every centimetre. You could also try the ‘one in, one out’ rule – for every new item you bring into your home, get rid of one you no longer use.

ORGANISE

A well-organised household is one where everything has a place – and that means creating ‘homes’ for your stuff, says Amy. To make the best use of space, use durable, stackable storage containers – look for styles that are clear for visibility and easy to open and close.

Group items by frequency of use. “Keep most-used items in prime storage spots,” suggests Amy. “In the kitchen, that means keeping dinner plates and lunchboxes in easy-toreach drawers, and storing special items higher up.”

For wardrobes, hang as much as possible. “Hanging is like a filing system for clothes,” says Amy. “Felt or velvet hangers are my favourite – they just make your clothes look better.” Put folded items in drawers with dividers “This keeps everything neatly organised,” she says. Store out-ofseason clothing or bedding in space-saving vacuum-seal bags that can be tucked under a bed or on a high shelf.

Storing like with like is the fastest way to find what you need, suggests Jo. “And use the same type of container throughout if you want a calm, tidy look,” she adds.

DECLUTTER LIKE A PRO

● Clutter builds up when we delay decisions – so stop shuffling things from one spot to another. “Label bags ‘donate’ or ‘bin’ and keep them near the front door,” says Jo. “When they’re full, take them out of the house.”

● Overwhelmed? Start small. “My go-to tip is to start in your bedroom,” advises Jo. “Waking up in a clutter-free space is rejuvenating. Rehang only the clothes you actually wear and store the rest away on a higher shelf.”

● And to stop clutter creeping back? “Get into the habit of regular mini-declutters,” suggests Amy. “Once every six months is ideal. You’ll get faster each time – and it helps maintain the calm you’ve worked so hard for.”

WALL POWER

Add elegance and character to your home by elevating blank spaces with Portaline lining boards from easycraft.

One of the most powerful tools in a designer’s playbook is texture. Surface variations invite you to reach out and touch, while the interplay of light and shadow on a textured surface makes a room come alive. For character and interest, wall panelling wins out over blank walls every time – and with the Portaline range, it’s easy for you to DIY the look in your own home!

Choose your profile

If your walls could talk, what would they say? Give your home character to suit your style by selecting the Portaline profile that speaks to you. Rounded Dune profile boards gently soften a modern home, while Peak profile boards reverse the look with sharper crests and curved valleys. Mesa boards deliver an elegantly simple batten profile that works with any interior style. For a more traditional

look, the reversible VJ/Regency panels give you two classic options in one.

Realise your potential

Crafted for creative DIYers, the Portaline range is suitable for use in all interior spaces, including wet areas like bathrooms, laundries and kitchens*. It can also be used on both flat and curved surfaces – clever curved wall beads can accommodate bends with a minimum radius of 300mm, ideal for capturing on-trend features like rounded kitchen islands and voluptuous built-in bench seats.

POWER UP

Find all your EV needs under one roof at Bunnings, so you can charge up with confidence, at home and on the road.

As electric vehicle (and plug-in hybrid) technology develops and more people make the switch, EV charging tech is keeping pace, offering better, faster and more convenient ways to keep your EV powered up. Bunnings is the home of EV charging solutions, stocked with products to meet the charging needs of EV and PHEV owners.

Plug and play

A hardwired charger (on a wall, or pole-mounted in the driveway) will be your primary charging solution for a drive-ready EV. Bunnings can equip you with the right charger for your home and your vehicle, and even hook you up with a certified electrician to install it. Before you head in store, arm yourself with relevant information. First up, figure out what kind of power you’re on –

single-phase power is standard but if you’re on three-phase power (check with a certified electrician), your home can better accommodate higher loads and, depending on your vehicle, it may charge more quickly. Also check your plug type – the majority of EVs will use a Type 2 plug, but earlier models may vary. Some chargers, like the DeWalt IP65 smart charger, will offer additional smart functionality, which allows you to manage charging and monitor your power use via an app.

On the go

Avoid range anxiety by equipping yourself with flexible charging solutions for on the road. If you’re staying away from home – visiting family, for example – you will need a Level 1 portable EV charging cable, which can be plugged into a standard power point. Some public charging stations have charging cables attached, but others do not; be prepared for these by carrying your own Deta Type 2 EV charging cable.

All in order

From a case for a portable charger to a simple strap for coiled cords, Arlec EV accessories help keep your charging kit safe, clean and ordered. Cables can be up to seven metres long, so cable management solutions are a must to keep your set-up organised, the plug clear of dust and your garage floor free of trip hazards. Metres of robust cable are fairly hefty, so find a quality holder that can handle its weight.

A CUT ABOVE

Check out the router, a must-have tool for precision and detail.

Whether you’re building shelves, customising a tabletop or upgrading cabinets, a router is one of the most useful woodworking tools you can own. Why? Because it shapes edges and cuts clean recesses with speed and precision, getting you professional-looking results.

For simple edge shaping, a router makes quick work of things. You can round over sharp corners or add a clean bevel for a more finished look. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, especially on items of furniture or architectural trim. Routers

also come in handy for trimming back overhanging laminate. Run a flush bit along the edge and you’re left with a smooth surface that lines up perfectly.

WHICH ROUTER?

There are a couple of different types of router and choosing the right one depends on the kind of work you’re doing. A plunge router lets you lower the bit directly into the middle of a surface, which is useful for making cut-outs or recesses, such as for hinges or handles. And you can adjust the cutting depth as you go.

A plunge router is the most versatile and widely recommended for most general woodworking tasks, says Angus Stone from Ryobi power tools. “These routers can handle edge profiling, dados, mortices and light-duty template work,” he says.

A trim router is smaller, lighter and great for one-handed use. It’s perfect for adding edge details, trimming thin materials or light-duty tasks where a big tool would feel clumsy. These are often the first routers people start with because they’re easy to handle and do more than you might expect.

The compact version of a trim router is a palm router – it is easy to hold, simple to control and ideal for detail work and light tasks such as rounding edges, cleaning up small joints or adding personal touches to a project. Despite their small size, they often come with helpful features like depth adjustment and built-in lights so you can see what you’re doing.

CORDED VS CORDLESS

You’ll also want to decide between a corded and cordless model. Corded routers give nonstop power, which is great for working for long stretches or cutting through dense material.

“Corded routers deliver steady performance without worrying about battery life,” says Angus Stone. “They’re also generally cheaper than cordless models with similar power – just keep in mind you’ll need access to a power source.”

That said, cordless routers are just as capable. They’re convenient,

Match your router to your requirements as design features vary

powerful and let you move around freely, especially when working outside or in tight spots where dragging a cord would get in the way. “Cordless routers are ideal for trim routing or light edge work,” explains Angus. “They’re great for quick jobs or where power isn’t readily available, but make sure you have the applicable brand battery when buying the tool.”

BITS AND PIECES

Beyond choosing the right tool for your needs, it’s essential to understand the importance of using the correct router bits for your project. Router bits come in various shapes and sizes, each designed for specific tasks such as straight cuts, chamfers, rabbets or decorative profiles. Investing in quality bits made from carbide-tipped steel ensures sharp, clean cuts and longer-lasting performance. Using dull or inappropriate bits can lead to tear-out, uneven edges and even damage to your work piece. Safety is important when using routers. Always wear eye and ear protection to guard against flying debris and noise. Secure your work piece firmly, keep your hands clear

BEST FOR PRECISE IN-SURFACE CUTTING

Plunge routers can start a cut in the middle of a surface, so are ideal for mortising and inlays.

of the bit and start the router before it touches the material. For plunge routers, lock the base before cutting to maintain control.

Angus also stresses the importance of proper technique. “Always move the router against the direction of the bit’s rotation. Going the wrong way can cause the router to run away, which could damage the work piece or create an injury,” he says. With the right router and a bit of practice, you’ll be amazed at the professional-quality results you can achieve. When shaping edges, trimming laminate or creating intricate recesses, a router opens up a world of possibilities – one pass of the bit at a time. ●

SUN POWER

A typical pond pump uses mains electricity – it has to be plugged in to run. Solar pumps are run by a panel which generates safe, low-voltage power when the sun is out. This kit uses a 5m cable from the pump to the panel, which can be ground staked, wall or fence hung, or even roof mounted (with an extension lead).

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (eye protection, gloves and mask)

n Hand trowel

n Garden spade

n Heavy-duty builder’s bucket (20L)

n Torpedo level

n White-head rubber mallet

n Long (1.2m) level

n Bowl planter

n Aquarium-grade silicone sealant

n 400-600mm stepping stone

n Mortar mix

n Plants (we used Liriope ‘Isabella’, Dianella ‘Silver Streak’, and Cordylines ‘Pink Diamond’ and ‘Rumba’)

n Mulch

n 30-50mm decorative pebbles

n Solar pond pump kit

3 Wearing safety gear, carefully pour mortar into a bucket. Add water a little at a time and mix thoroughly using a clean spade until you reach a sticky yet firm consistency. Use the spade to ladle the mix into the hole, creating a central mound.

STEP 6: LAY MULCH

STEP 1: PREPARE POT

1 Any drainage holes in your pot must be made watertight. The bowl used here had a rubber stopper which was removed and reversed, as it had a larger flange on the outside. Before reinserting, add a bead of sealant around the inside of the drainage hole and the inside lip; allow to cure. Tip: For pots with no stopper, use a product such as Selleys Knead-It aqua epoxy putty.

STEP 4: BED BASE

STEP 2: MARK AREA

2 Clear away any mulch or plants from the area. Position the stepping stone in the pond location and sit the pot or bowl on top to check exact siting. Use a hand trowel to mark the soil around the edge of the stepping stone, then remove. Use a garden spade to remove a 50mm deep layer of soil from the centre of the marked area.

STEP 5: PLANT UP

6 Wearing gloves and a mask, spread a 50mm deep layer of mulch around plants and pond base, keeping it away from stems. Keep mulch level with the top of the pond base. Tip: Plant and mulch before filling the pond to avoid dirt clouding the water.

Keep in mind

■ Wear gloves, eye protection and a mask when handling mortar, mulch, compost and potting mix.

■ Before installing a pond, check your local authority’s safety regulations and guidelines. Always closely supervise children around any body of water.

4 Firmly press stepping stone into mortar bed. Use a torpedo level to check level from side to side and back to front, tap with a mallet as needed, then check with a long level. The base should sit a little higher than surrounding soil to allow for mulch.

STEP 7: ADD PUMP

7 Position pump in base of pot so the outlet on top is in the pond centre. Push the pump down firmly so the suction-cup feet take hold. Wash decorative pebbles and spread around the pump. Fill pot with water to 10-20mm below the rim. Add fountain riser.

■ Do not operate the pump without water in the fountain bowl at any time; permanent damage to the motor may occur. Regularly check the water level in the feature.

■ Always unplug the pump from the solar panel when not in use.

5 Use a trowel to remove any excess mortar. Position bowl on base, then arrange plants around the pond set-up to check the layout – position plants to present their best ‘face’ to the main viewing direction. Take a photo for reference. Dig holes and plant out.

STEP 8: INSTALL PANEL

8 Find a sunny spot for the solar panel, run pump lead to the location, position panel (we used the supplied ground stake), then connect the lead. If sun is falling directly on the panel the pump should start almost instantly. Select and fit a fountain nozzle.
