Welcome!

For the past couple of months I’ve watched in awe as our style team and trusted helpers have dreamt up projects for DIY July. Creativity and a can-do attitude go a long way, and it’s even more rewarding when savings and satisfaction align.

What better time to dive in than DIY July? Of course, we have access to the collective knowledge of the experts in Bunnings stores across the country – but then so do you. And we drew on our red-shirted

friends to help bring many of the projects to life – from furniture upcyles to a weekend bathroom refresh and a fabulous mud room build. Head online for loads more inspiration, and get the kids involved during the school holidays by taking part in free fun workshops in various stores*. The DIY drive doesn’t end in July, because our search for Australia’s best DIY jobs (see page 13) will bring readers’ handiwork into focus in coming months. We’ll share the best of the best, small and large. And I’m particularly excited about our new category, recognising community groups who create and make for the benefit of all.

Snag some funds

THAT SAUSAGE IN BREAD CAN HELP SUSTAIN YOUR LOCAL ORGANISATIONS

For more than 25 years, the Bunnings sausage sizzle has been a beloved part of the Bunnings experience for customers, while providing community groups with a simple way to raise funds to continue their important work.

One such group is Feed It Forward, founded by Monica Morunga in Western Australia in 2018. Today, a network of more than 500 volunteers collect food from 150-plus locations, helping to put meals on the table for people facing financial hardship.

“Last year, we helped more than 150,000 families and connected with schools, childcare, aged care centres, retirement villages, soup kitchens and indigenous communities,” says Monica. “Our association with Bunnings helps immensely.”

Indigenous pots

EXPLORE THE BEAUTY OF THESE PAINTED PLANTERS

NAIDOC week begins on July 2, kicking off cultural and educational activities celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The popular Indigenous pots range showcases the work of one of the longest running, 100 per cent Aboriginal-owned arts centres in Australia, the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. As a not-for-profit organisation, proceeds from this pot range directly support Warlukurlangu artists who reside in the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi. Their colourful acrylic paintings and prints are centred on traditional storytelling. Find out more at bunnings.com.au/indigenous-pots.

To host a sizzle, not-forprofit organisations just need volunteers and a few supplies – Bunnings helps with the rest! And 100 per cent of funds raised go directly to the community groups running the barbecue. Apply by mail or email to the Activities Organiser at your local store – visit bunnings. com.au/stores – outlining what the funds will be used for (such as upgrading facilities or buying new equipment).

See you at the next sizzle!

Plant deciduous trees. Buy barerooted plants and soak the roots in a bucket of diluted seaweed tonic for a few hours before planting to reduce transplant shock.

Clean, sharpen and oil garden tools like secateurs, shears, loppers, spades and shovels. Coat timber handles with linseed oil to protect and preserve the wood.

Prune roses, removing up to two-thirds of growth. Bin diseased material and spray stems with fungicide to control any winter-loving pests and diseases. Get on top of bindii. AN IN-WALL FIREPLACE BRINGS COMFORT AND GLAMOUR TO THIS ELEGANT WHITE LIVING AREA

Words and styling KYLIE JACKES Photography LOUISE ROCHE

BeforeWhile it might not get particularly cold on the Central Queensland Coast during winter, homeowners Eleesha (opposite) and Brock believe that an open fire adds immeasurably to a home’s feel. So, during a whole-house renovation, they made a built-in wood heater the star of their large living area. “Whether on or not, a fireplace has a presence in a room,” says Eleesha. “It draws people in and encourages them to gather around. And when we do get chilly days and nights here and it warms the house, you can’t imagine how you lived without one!”

The old woodburner in one corner had a flue that the couple’s young daughters could potentially reach and touch from the stairs above. So, for safety – as well as looks – the new fireplace was fitted into a central wall (see it on Instagram @the.quinn.girls).

“The original fireplace got lost, so I wanted a modern in-wall style that was large enough to heat the space,” says Eleesha. She found the perfect solution in a Scandia Styliste 10. “We opted for real wood so we could enjoy the whole experience – the smell of wood burning and crackling.”

out an existing wall to house the wood heater, which sits in a curved, fluted surround. “It added an architectural feel with wow factor and was much more affordable,” says Eleesha.

Pretty things

Once the wall was boxed out by licensed builders and the wood heater and flues professionally installed by a gas fitter, Eleesha and Brock set to work. They used non-combustible fibre cement lining panels to make a feature wall behind the fireplace. For the surround and mantel, pine framing was secured to a top panel of MDF sheet cut with rounded edges. “To achieve a curved surface at the ends to attach

To match the rest of the room, the wall and fireplace surround were painted in Dulux Natural White. The finishing touch was the DIY hearth, formed with framing timber and clad in fibre cement sheeting with a flameproof coating. Porter’s Paints

Customised closet

Before planning your wardrobe set-up, home organisation expert Sarah Cottman of Heavenly Order (sarahcottman.com) suggests you declutter clothes, shoes and accessories, so you only store items you actually use. Next, assess your needs and preferences. Is it a shared wardrobe? How will space be allocated – do you need more hanging or drawer space? Will you need open shelves for bulky items, bags and shoeboxes? Accurately measuring the space you need is crucial, says Lynda MacDonald of The Design Chaperone (thedesignchaperone.com.au). “When sizing up vertical space, allow about 950mm height for short hanging space, 1900mm for long hanging space, and remember to

include a three-quarter hanging level if you need to hang shorter dresses or longer coats,” she says.

Hanging shoe storage is also a great inclusion, adds Sarah. “You can tier them according to usage and easily access the pair you want.”

For the cabinetry finish, look for colours and tones that complement bedroom furnishings. “Woodgrain paired with a feature metal handle is popular and adds visual warmth and depth, while handle-free creates a subtle integrated look,” says Lynda. She also suggests adding a full-length mirror on the front or back of a wardrobe door.

TIP: You’ll need a cabinet depth of about 55cm to accommodate a standard coathanger. 

Drop-and-pack zone

A dedicated spot to collect or deposit shoes, bags and kids’ paraphernalia on the way out the door, or as soon as you arrive home, is a great way to streamline household routines. To maximise storage, Sarah Cottman suggests utilising floor-to-ceiling space with a tall coat cupboard, nooks for baskets, large cupboards with shelves and plenty of hooks for jackets, hats and bags. “Mud roomstyle cupboards are great designated spots for kids’ school gear and can double as a handy charging station for iPads and laptops at the end of the day,” she says.

The style of your drop-and-pack zone is often a transition space itself – and can be unique to the rest of your house. “It’s a place where you can go bold!” says Lynda MacDonald. “Think beautiful wallpaper, or feature panelling, custom cabinet pulls or handles and fun colours,” she says. “Children’s initials in custom lettering on cupboards is a great way to personalise the space and identify their own storage spot for bags and sporting equipment.”

A sturdy seating area in a custom fabric, where you can perch to put on shoes, is also a handy and stylish inclusion. Below the bench seat, consider including integrated drawers or a stowaway nook. “I like to use plastic containers for wet or dirty items like muddy shoes, boots and umbrellas, which can sit inside nice decorative baskets,” says Sarah. 

Home of f ice or study nook

Whether carving out a kids’ homework zone or spot where you can work from home, streamlined storage is essential. “Start with a desk, preferably 750mm high, teamed with an adjustable chair that can suit everyone in the family,” suggests Lynda MacDonald. Locate the zone near a window to capture natural light, and couple it with a desk lamp with a tilt or swivel head.

Document storage systems are key to housing paperwork. “I recommend a filing cabinet, combined with labelled trays, manilla folders on racks or wall pockets for active projects,” advises Sarah Cottman. Power cords, charging cables and devices may also need corralling. A sleek solution is to add a hole to the desk, with a cable duct you can feed cords through.

Overhead, consider open floating shelves for books, coordinated storage boxes and mementos. Lynda also suggests personalising the desktop.

SAGE ADVICE

A LONELY COOK NOOK IS NOW A GORGEOUS, FUNCTIONAL AND SOCIABLE SPACE

Keen renovators Tilly and fiancé Ray loved the ‘70s features of their Canberra townhouse, but the kitchen was one element not worth saving. “The rest of the house has high ceilings, which is one reason why we bought it, but the kitchen was small and poky in the corner of a large space,” says interior stylist Tilly (tillyrobertsdesign.com). Along with a lack of modern necessities – no dishwasher! – carpet butted up to the kitchen, and a benchtop upstand screened it off, isolating the cook. “It was really antisocial,” says Tilly. “When we had people over I’d be in the kitchen cooking by myself!”

Design smarts

In addition to opening up the kitchen to the dining and lounge areas, Tilly and Ray wanted to increase storage and make more efficient use of the space. They used the Kaboodle 3D planner to draw up their ideal kitchen, with budget top of mind. “We tried to

work with the original framework where possible, keeping plumbing and electrics roughly in the same area to cut costs,” says Tilly. Demolishing most of the old kitchen themselves also helped to keep costs down.

Making use of the empty brick wall on the left resolved the storage shortage – it now houses a fridge, pantry, cabinetry and shelving. And while the U-shaped kitchen was the best use of space without major alterations, it did throw up a few logistical challenges. So to make pots and pans more accessible, the corner cabinets were fitted out with internal carousels, while an awkward leftover space beside the oven was filled with a handy pullout spice rack.

Paint job

Using Kaboodle raw board cabinetry (in Alpine profile) allowed their own choice of colour, with Tilly settling on a half tint of Taubmans South Wind, a subtle grey-green shade that marries well with the original timber in

their 70s home. To further reduce costs, the pair prepped and handpainted the cabinetry, which gave it a beautiful soft finish. “I like that matt finish – it feels very natural,” says Tilly. It’s also easy to touch up if it gets damaged, and to change colour completely if they want a whole new look.

Wood work

American oak benchtops were chosen to tie in with the home’s original timber elements, and offcuts turned into shelves. Tilly and Ray prepped and finished all the timber, and say the maintenance required – more sanding and re-oiling from time to time – is more than outweighed by its warmth, beauty and longevity.

The open shelves were a must for Tilly, who has a collection of lovely objects. “It makes the kitchen feel personalised – we can put the beautiful pieces out on display, rather than hiding them away in a cabinet,” she says.

ou’ll likely spend around a third or more of your time in your bedroom, so of course you want it to be a beautiful space. Natural material

Well grounded

Look for natural flooring products that are easy to keep clean, such as solid timber (from a certified sustainable source for true green credentials), polished concrete or stone tiles.

Engineered timber, laminate and vinyl won’t gather pet dander or dust mites – two of the worst culprits when it comes to allergens. However, the way these floors are made means they may contain other allergy triggers such as formaldehyde and other VOCs, so check their specifications before you buy. This goes for any sealants or finishes used on your floor, too.

For a softer feel underfoot, add a rug. As before, pick natural materials such as jute or wool (short pile rather than shag), and vacuum every day with a good-quality cleaner that

has a HEPA filter. Consider a robotic vacuum cleaner – it can do its thing while you’re out of the room and not breathing in any dust it might kick up.

Furniture f inds

Your choice of bedding and mattress can directly affect your asthma and allergies. Adele Taylor from the National Asthma Council Australia Sensitive Choice Program says it’s important to understand what triggers your asthma and allergies. “This will help to determine the best products and materials to use,” she says.

To combat dust mites, minimise the amount of fabric in the room – consider a timber bed frame or headboard instead of an upholstered one. Rattan and bamboo tick the natural materials box, making them good for occasional

furniture. Where possible, minimise clutter to make cleaning easier and give nasties fewer places to dwell.

Your choice of bed is important. “Consider if the bed has had an antimicrobial treatment, which will help reduce dust mites and mould build-up in your mattress, and also whether the mattress material has had this treatment,” explains Adele. “With all new products, especially beds and mattresses, we recommend you let them ‘off-gas’ (release VOCs) before putting them in your room, especially if your asthma or allergy triggers are chemicals and VOCs.”

The National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice program suggests people with asthma and allergies should avoid memory foam or latex, as these are known sensitisers.

For bed linen, opt for organic cotton, bamboo or Tencel, which although man-made, is a wood pulp derivative with strong eco credentials. “These natural products can be a better option for those with asthma and allergies,” says Adele. Tighter-weave fabrics, such as organic cotton, are generally better than loose weave, like linen, while luxurious silk can actually repel dust mites.

Add a mattress protector and pillow protectors to your shopping list. “You may even consider using a quilt protector as well,” says Adele. “These help stop dust mites and mould spores moving up from your pillow and mattress into your breathing environment while you are in bed.”

Make sure to change your sheets at least weekly and wash your bedding in water hotter than 55 degrees. Adele suggests putting dry quilts and pillows in the tumble dryer for 10 minutes (pending manufacturer instructions) to help kill dust mites.

When choosing window coverings, she recommends looking for blinds or curtains that have had antimicrobial and antistatic treatment, which can

help stop dust and dust mites building up on them. Steer clear of heavy curtains, which are prone to gathering dust; if possible, try external shutters.

“They are a great way to control natural lighting into the bedroom,” says Adele. “They can be easily cleaned on the outside and may even remove the need for an indoor window treatment.”

A greener feel

Improving the air quality in the bedroom is an easy way to create a healthy space. It could be as simple as adding a few well-chosen plants, says Bunnings Greenlife buyer Katy Schreuder.

“Sansevieria, or snake plant, is an easy-care option that thrives with little water and low light,” says Katy. “Scindapsus, or devil’s ivy, is a beautiful trailing plant that copes well in most light conditions and with little watering. Place it on a high shelf and watch it develop long trails of lush foliage.” Avoid high-maintenance fast growers and flowering plants that could stoke any allergies like hayfever.

too close to the bed to avoid knocking them over. Check the label for care tips and to make sure the plant is safe around kids and pets, and keep an eye out for mould. “Generally, most plants prefer to dry out slightly between waterings and this will help to reduce the chance of mould forming,” explains Katy Schreuder. “Ensure you check your plants and pots regularly – if water is collecting in their container empty it out and reduce how much you water it.”

Take the temperature

The location of your home, such as near a main road, and certain events like bushfires can impact the air quality inside your house. Consider purchasing an air purifier

DITCH THE ELECTRONICS

We need a good night’s sleep to recharge, and it’s generally accepted among sleep researchers that using devices such as smartphones last thing at night can stimulate the brain into wake mode. Try to get into the habit of logging off early in the evening and being technology free (including the TV) for an hour or so before you’re ready to sleep. Avoid keeping or charging devices by your bed, so you’re not tempted to check them if you wake in the night. If you use your phone as an alarm, consider buying an old school mechanical one instead.

Time to decorate

Who doesn’t love paint as a fantastic, easily changed decorating resource? Plus, it creates a smooth surface that’s relatively simple to keep clean. However, virtually all paints contain VOCs and chemicals, which can affect the air quality in your room.

to filter the air and clean it of dust, gases and even airborne viruses. Pick one with a quiet mode if you plan to use it at night.

How you heat or cool your home can also affect the air quality inside it, so choose wisely when it comes to your bedroom. Ideally it shouldn’t be too humid, as dust mites and mould, in particular, love moist air. A reversecycle air conditioner, which can help reduce humidity, might be the best option. Look for a model that also scrubs the air for extra benefits.

A ceiling fan is an energy-efficient option for cooling, but wipe the blades regularly to keep it free from dust and avoid potential allergens being blown around the room.

For people facing allergy sensitivities or asthma, having good indoor air quality is important, explains Tayler Chalklen Zouch from Dulux. “When you’re thinking about things in the home that can impact air quality, paint can be a contributing factor,” she says. It makes sense to look for paints with very low chemical emissions, such as those in the water-based Dulux UltraAir range.

Melanie Stevenson of Porter’s Paints says their Eggshell Finish boasts low VOCs in its array of colour-rich hues. “It is perfect for bedrooms,” she says. “Our low odour, fast-drying formulation means you can finish the job in a day and move back in to sleep the very same night – there’s no having to sleep in the spare room or on the sofa while the paint smell wears off!” But do air the room thoroughly to help any emissions dissipate before you move back in.

1

DO check household appliances

Electrical faults are a major cause of house fires in Australia. Reduce the risk by regularly inspecting electrical leads for damage, keeping appliances clean and free of dust, and even removing breadcrumbs from the toaster. Empty the lint filter every time you use the dryer, as the lint can catch fire. Check electric blankets for damage before use and roll, not fold, to store. Get the reverse-cycle air conditioner serviced annually and vacuum its filters regularly. Avoid overloading power boards and place them on their side, so dust doesn’t collect in the unused power points*. If you don’t have enough power points or a fuse often trips, call in a licensed electrician. Don’t leave appliances on when you’re not home and turn them off at the wall before going to bed.

2DO be safe with heating

A warm home is a healthy home, but heating can be dangerous. Have the chimney of your wood heater professionally swept before winter begins, keep firewood, fire starters and matches at least one metre away from the fireplace and always use a fire screen in front of an open fire (and enclosed wood heaters if small children are around). Only run heaters and electric blankets when you’re home and awake.

Never place clothes or towels over a heater to dry (a heated bathroom towel rail does the job nicely) and keep curtains, bedding and clothes racks at least one metre away from heaters and fireplaces.

3DO have a plan

Compile a few simple steps so your family can react quickly if there is a fire. Test smoke alarms at least twice a year (replace batteries if needed) and vacuum alarms to remove dust. Use specialised smoke alarms (these include strobe lights and an under-pillow vibrating pad) for the hearing impaired. Consider a carbon monoxide alarm if you run gas appliances. Keep a fire blanket and extinguisher in the kitchen. Have a home escape plan and if anyone has special needs, have backup medication, or a manual wheelchair in case there are power outages.

4DO maintain the garden

Prune back dead or weak tree branches, as they could fall and damage your property – or a person! Clear all gutters regularly, especially after autumn, as a build-up of debris can provide fuel for house and bush fires, and also lead to leaks, mould and nesting pests. Keep safety top of mind; when on any ladder, wear good slip-proof shoes, make sure the ladder is stable (a ladder grip is a worthy investment), maintain three points of contact at all times and always make sure someone is nearby to help if required. If you can’t safely reach, call in the professionals.

5DO reduce the chance of falls

Falling is the number one cause of injury hospitalisations and death in Australia**. Outside, pressure wash moss from slippery paths. Light up hazardous areas, like outdoor steps, and use bright sensor lights to illuminate major thoroughfares – some smart sensor lights can be turned on and off with a smartphone. Inside, clear floors of clutter and secure rugs and carpets. Make sure stair balustrades are solid and clean, and add adhesive grip tape to stair treads. Sensor lights are also useful in hallways and bathrooms; some can just be plugged into a power point.

A GARDEN THAT COMPLEMENTS THE ARCHITECTURE OF YOUR HOME CREATES VISUAL HARMONY, INDOORS AND OUT

Ahouse and garden are often looked at as two separate entities when, in fact, they should be considered as a whole. Barbara Landsberg of Landsberg Garden Design (@landsberggardens) says a garden is the setting for a home. “If your garden is in the same style as your home, it will look and feel settled, balanced and at ease,” she says. Homes of certain eras have definitive features and by taking cues from architecture, you can design a harmonious garden. Here are four strong Australian architectural styles and the garden elements that can help them to shine.

COASTAL

Australian coastal homes come in different shapes and styles, from the modest weatherboard shack of the 1960s to today’s modern incarnations in timber and glass.

What they all have in common is a relaxed, no-fuss vibe. Landscape designer Johnny Derwent of Site Design Studios (sdstudios.com.au) describes it as a clean aesthetic that evokes the breeziness of the beach. Look to plants that grow well near the coast when planning your garden. “Palms, frangipani and Australian natives are excellent candidates,” Barbara says. Ornamental grasses, such as Carex ‘Feather Falls’, and succulents also work well, with their easy-care nature suited to harsher coastal conditions. “A planting scheme of blues and greys is complementary to the beachy palette,” Barbara adds. The best hard materials? Weathered natural timbers, pebbles and stone. “A recycled hardwood timber deck allowed to grey is a fabulous feature and low maintenance,” says Johnny.

CONTEMPORARY

Modernist homes are characterised by simple but strong lines and geometric forms, so it makes sense that the garden should follow suit.

“Use straight or curved lines, but ensure they’re defined rather than organic and indeterminate,” says Barbara.

Exteriors are typically timber, concrete, stone or render, which can be echoed in the garden with pavers, block walls and slat-horizontal or vertical fencing.

To reflect the architecture, the plant palette should be minimal, with a strong focus on striking forms and textures. Feature trees might include the dragon tree (Dracaena draco) or Bismarck palm (Bismarckia nobilis), typically planted singly to highlight the sculptural qualities. As for the understorey, agaves, zoysia, kalanchoe, mondo grass and blue chalksticks (Curio repens) are ideal. “You only need a few groupings of a few plant types,” Barbara explains. Before planting, take soil condition into account. “If soil is poorly drained, grow succulents in raised beds or pots,” says Bunnings buyer Katy Schreuder.

FORMAL QUEENSLANDER

To cope with the tropical heat, Queenslander homes are usually set off the ground and combine laidback features, including wide verandahs, with more traditional architectural elements.

“These could include detailed roof lines, intricate lattice-work and balustrading,” says Johnny Derwent. Extend the formality of these elements into the garden with open lawns, hedges and medium-to-large feature trees, such as Queensland native tuckeroo. Barbara Landsberg suggests tropical plants to settle the home into the landscape. “Typical are frangipani and palms,” she says. Hedges may include murraya, viburnum, lilly pilly or buxus.

Light-coloured pavers and pebbles are an ideal match for a Queenslander’s relaxed but classic look. “You could create a central path to the front using either light brick or pebbles to formalise the entry to the dwelling,” says Johnny. “A water feature at the base of the steps creates a sense of arrival and is a great way to attract birds, too.”

Homes from the Victorian and later Federation eras, whether brick or timber, have character and charm. Notable architectural details include iron lacework and timber fretwork, and complex roof lines.

“These homes tend to have many decorative details and the architecture speaks to a more English heritage,” says Barbara. “The gardens that feel most natural with Federation style have some level of formality and tradition.” She recommends a planting scheme which reflects that heritage. “Jacarandas, camellias, clipped box hedging and flowering plants, such as roses, gardenias and lavender, would be ideal.” If classic, lilac-coloured lavender doesn’t suit your scheme, consider other cultivars. “There are two new pink and white varieties (Bubbleberry and Vanillaberry) in the Lavender Ruffles collection,” says Katy Schreuder.

When hardscaping, look at the home – brick, sandstone, cast-iron and timber can be replicated in arbours, retaining walls and edging.

WASHROOM WONDER

BRING SOME FLAIR TO A SERVICEABLE LAUNDRY WITH A FEW SAVVY AND ACHIEVABLE DIY UPGRADES

The laundry is often at the bottom of the reno to-do list. Or, like this one, it may have been updated to make it more functional –but not very stylish. Here’s how to give a laundry those finishing touches to take it from plain to pretty in a pocket-friendly weekend job.

Lay it out

All the elements for a modern and streamlined laundry were here; they just needed rejigging to improve the look and flow of the space. The front loader was tucked under the benchtop but the tumble dryer was sitting on top – tempting to do when it has feet, but a waste of usable bench space. And while the small wall cabinet offered storage, it was in an awkward spot over the sink. So, the first step was to reposition the dryer and wall cabinet and rework the vertical space.

On the tiles

To provide a backdrop for the newlook laundry, the area above the benchtop was tiled using mosaic sheets, which makes tiling a splashback achievable for first-timers.

Next, the dryer was wall-mounted using a universal bracket. A floating shelf replaced the wall cabinet, opening up the work area, and a rail placed under it as a place to dry damp clothes indoors or hang them while ironing. This custom drying rack was made by attaching a 19mm wardrobe hanging rod to matching pillar ends.

The rod was trimmed with a hacksaw to fit the width of the shelf, then one pillar end attached to the underside of the shelf with the supplied screws. The rod was positioned into both pillars, and the other end secured to the shelf. For the base cabinet, swapping in gloss doors and pull handles gave it a more sleek, contemporary look for little effort. Then came the fun stuff: adding plants and accessories. Here, the too-small-for-a-cabinet gap next to the washer was put to good use as a home for that absolute laundry essential, a sectioned hamper for sorting whites, colours and delicates.

Keep in mind…

n Ensure the room is well ventilated when tiling. n Before wall-mounting a dryer or shelf, use a stud finder to check for wiring and pipes, turn off the power before drilling and use fixings suitable for your wall type. Call a professional if unsure.

n The shelf has a maximum load capacity of 5kg when installed onto plasterboard walls, and 10kg for masonry.

Although neat and functional, this all-white bathroom lacked personality. However, a full reno would have been expensive and wasteful, considering the wall tiles and fixtures were in great condition. The solution? Specialty paint to create monochrome impact.

Taking the grout and vanity cabinet from white to black accentuates the graphic appeal of the vertical subway tiles, as well as the pleasing curve of the basin. Replacing the plain medicine cabinet with a chic black-framed mirror completed the look. Here’s how we did it.

GROUT RESULT

Dark grout paint works best for gloss ceramic or porcelain tiles, as it may stain porous natural stone tiles. If you’re not sure, test on a spare tile if you have one, or on an inconspicuous area.

1 Wearing disposable gloves, use a scourer to scrub tile and grout cleaner over the old grout. Wash down thoroughly with a sponge and leave to dry.

2 Working in sections, apply paint along the grout lines using the grout paint applicator, ensuring excess doesn’t pool by blotting with a microfibre cloth. Leave to touch-dry for about 20 minutes.

3 Use a spray bottle to apply a fine mist of water over the paint, leaving for about five minutes. Sponge excess paint off the tiles, rinsing regularly in a bucket of clean water. Leave to cure for two hours.

4 Polish the tiles with a clean, dry cloth.

VANITY FLAIR

We used Dulux ‘Renovation Range’ cabinet doors paint in Domino for our dramatic vanity upcycle.

1 Using a screwdriver or drill with driver bit, take the vanity cabinet doors off the hinges and remove the handles. Set handles and screws aside.

2 Mask around the sink, walls and hinges with painter’s tape and position a drop sheet on the floor. Clean the cabinet and doors with sugar soap wipes, finishing with a dry microfibre cloth Tip: Remove all grease and dust to help achieve the best finish.

3 Apply primer over the door fronts and outside the cabinet using an angled

paintbrush for cutting in and a mini microfibre roller and tray for flat areas, leaving to dry.

4 Using a clean brush, roller and tray, apply two coats of paint, leaving to dry after each. Tip: Seal paint equipment in plastic wrap between coats to stop it drying out.

5 Prepare the clear coat by following the packaging instructions, then apply with a clean mini roller, leaving to dry overnight. Repeat for a second coat, leaving to dry thoroughly. Tip: We opted for two coats of clear coat as extra protection from moisture in this wet area.

6 Use a screwdriver to rehang the doors and reinstall the handles. 5 7

Keep in mind…

n Ensure the room is well ventilated when painting. n Follow paint manufacturer’s instructions for preparation of surfaces and application of paint, including paint drying/curing times.

n Before installing bathroom accessories on the wall, use a stud finder to check for wiring and pipes, turn off the power before drilling and use fixings suitable for your wall type. Call a professional if unsure.

A HIGH-COLOUR, HI-SHEEN KITCHEN IS TRANSFORMED WITH TIMELESS DETAILING

As the hub of the home, the kitchen is where many homeowners would like to stamp their personal style – keeping time and budget in hand. If your kitchen has good bones but isn’t quite your dream space, the solution could be a DIY cosmetic treatment.

This kitchen was light, bright and a great size however Bunnings Workshop community member Elisabeth (@LizzieCro) coveted Shaker-style cabinetry – without the price tag. She did it with timber and paint.

Fabulous faux

To prepare for painting, the cabinet doors, drawer faces and end panels were removed, along with hardware, and cleaned thoroughly. A primer formulated for glossy, non-porous surfaces was applied with a roller over the high-gloss polyurethane, then two coats of a water-based enamel paint. The cabinetry trim was cut from 3mm plywood, painted to match and glued onto doors. These strips were also used to ‘divide’ large drawers to create the illusion of more – but faux – drawers.

To ‘age up’ the stove area, the two side overhead wall cabinets were removed and the central cabinet converted into a custom rangehood cover using plywood, pine and MDF.

Finishing touches

New black knobs and pull handles completed the look on doors and drawers. The standard, stainless steel double-bowl with draining board was replaced with a ceramic butler’s sink, more in keeping with Shaker style. The cupboard doors below were cut down to accommodate the extra depth. New architraves were added to the modern bay window, along with horizontal lining boards on the walls, to give the whole room a more classic look. Colonial skirting now dresses the base and end panel of the breakfast bar, while lengths of 18mm pine add a profile to the cabinet kickboards.

To see more of Elisabeth’s kitchen makeover, go to workshop.bunnings. com.au/Shaker-style-kitchen.

Give a white Hamptons-style console new life as a Japanese-inspired black and bamboo piece with modern lines. We used a matt chalk paint and then repurposed a bamboo bath mat to update the drawer fronts. Use the same technique on other pieces to make a set!

1 Working on a drop sheet, take out the drawers from the console and remove the knobs with a screwdriver. Sand the console and drawer faces using a random orbital sander with 180-grit disc, and abrasive paper for hard-to-reach areas.

2 Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust. Apply two coats of chalk paint using a 50mm brush to cut in and a mini roller for flat areas, leaving to dry. Apply a second coat and leave to dry.

The single ensemble is a fave for kids’ bedrooms as it is both comfy and moveable (handy for cleaning), but the lack of a bedhead can make it look unmoored. This box shelving unit made from wallet-friendly plywood doubles as a bedhead and bedside table – thanks to the top shelf – while offering storage out of sight.

You’ll need the power tool trifecta for this project: circular saw, jigsaw and drill. Once the seven pieces are cut, it’s a straightforward glue, screw and paint job.

1 On the plywood, measure up 1100mm to cut a 1200mm-wide back panel with a circular saw. Measure across 1050mm and up 950mm to cut the front panel. From the 150mm-wide piece, cut a 950mm shelf and two 150mm shelf panels. From the remaining piece, cut two shelves 950mm x 150mm.

2 On the back panel, position a 2L paint tin in the top corners, flush with both edges and mark the curves in pencil. Use a 1L tin for the front panel. Use a jigsaw to cut the curves, checking the blade is unimpeded underneath. Sand all cuts and round over the edges slightly with a sanding sponge.

3 To make the base assembly, mark a shelf 5mm from the ends and 20mm in from either side using a combination square. Predrill with a countersinking bit, then apply adhesive to the shelf panels, position them against the shelf, flush with the ends, clamp and secure with 40mm screws.

4 Centre the base assembly on the front panel, flush with the bottom, use a combination square to check the overhang on both sides is equal and mark around the shelf. Measure 350mm up and mark a line for the middle shelf. Mark 350mm up from this to mark the top shelf. Repeat on reverse side.

5 With best sides facing up, place the front panel on the back, flush with the bottom, checking the overhang is even, then clamp together. Predrill two evenly spaced holes 5mm inside the shelf panel marks and four along the shelf marks. Remove top panel and countersink the holes in the back panel.

6 Position the front panel upright, clamped either side of the base. Apply adhesive to the base assembly and centre against the panel. Clamp and screw through predrilled holes. Apply adhesive to the middle and top shelves, check for centre, then clamp to the front panel and secure with screws.

7 Sand over the screw holes to remove breakout, then fill holes with timber filler using a scraper, leaving to dry. Sand over the filler to remove excess. Wipe all over the front panel and shelves with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust and leave to dry.

8 Apply primer all over the front and back panels using a mini roller, leaving to dry. Apply two coats of paint all over, leaving to dry after each coat. Tip: There’s no need to fill or paint the screw holes in the back panel as they will face the wall.

9 Apply adhesive along the shelf backs, then stand the front assembly upright. Position the back panel against it with equal overhang and screw through the holes. Secure safety straps into wall studs, 600mm apart and 1100mm up, using the supplied screws, and attach to the bedhead.

Keep in mind...

n Wear a mask and work in a well-ventilated area when cutting and sanding timber.

n To check the depth of the countersunk holes, place a screw upside down in the hole – the head should sit just below the surface.

1 Cordless drill/driver

Both Sam and Tilly’s go-to for big and small projects is a cordless Ryobi drill, as it’s lightweight but packs plenty of power. “Being cordless you can take it anywhere and it’s a must for drilling pilot holes, countersinking holes, driving screws and bolts and fast-tracking any flat-pack furniture assembly,” says Sam.

MAKER MUST-HAVES

ARM YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS TO POWER THROUGH HOME-MAINTENANCE AND UPCYCLING PROJECTS

Words KYLIE JACKES

With DIY July upon us, style editor Samantha Pointon and interior stylist Tilly Roberts share their favourite tried-and-trusted tools – essential when tackling design, reno and craft projects around your home. Here’s what’s in their kits.

2 Staple gun Whether you’re keen to make an upholstered bedhead, re-cover a chair or craft a timber frame for artwork, Tilly recommends adding a staple gun to your DIY kit. “It’s a simple tool to use, which extends your DIY capabilities for easy updates around the home,” she says.

3 Paint tin opener Sam carries a paint tin opener in her back pocket whenever she’s using paint. “It makes it quick and easy to open a paint can and ensures the rim of the lid doesn’t get damaged, which is important when storing leftover paint,” she says. In the kitchen they’re also handy for opening cans.

Saw and mitre box If you’re not confident with power tools, Sam recommends a handsaw and mitre box. “The box provides angle guides so you can make bevel, 45- and 90-degree cuts – ideal when working with dowel or mouldings,” she explains.

5 Screwdriver set “A good set of screwdrivers will get a lot of use,” says Tilly. “I use them when switching out cabinet handles to create a new feel in the kitchen and bedroom, and they’re a must when assembling furniture.”

6 Wire cutter “Wire is a stylist’s best-kept secret, so I always have a cutter on hand,” says Tilly. “It could be to trim chicken wire to sit inside a vase and support flowers, or to adjust picture-hanging wire. They’re handy when making Christmas decorations.”

7 Clamps If tackling a project on your own, clamps can serve as a second set of hands to hold materials in place when cutting, drilling and gluing. “It also makes life easier if you have something precarious that needs to dry in exactly the right position,” adds Tilly.

1 Ryobi ONE+ 18V HP brushless compact drill driver, $139/skin only (battery and charger sold separately), I/N: 0295343. 2 Arrow ‘T50’ heavy duty all purpose staple gun, $56, I/N: 5911696. 3 Uni-Pro metal paint can opener, $0.65, I/N: 1670452. 4 Magnet mitre box, $11.50, I/N: 5822889. 5 Craftright 19 piece screwdriver set, $11.98, I/N: 6060225. 6 Pinnacle wire cutter, $14.90, I/N: 0358171. 7 Irwin ‘Quick Grip’ 300mm mini clamps, $33.98/pack of 2, I/N: 0215574. 8 Paint Partner 270mm paint roller kit, $10.25, I/N: 0328955, and Pro Renovator 63mm wall paintbrush, $9, I/N: 1661753. 9 Ryobi 180W multipad sander, $119, I/N: 6210548. 10 Vileda ‘Colours’ microfibre cloths, $12.89/pack of 8, I/N: 0065913. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

8Paintbrush and roller

“Beyond walls, look to any piece of furniture or homewares – bricks, vases, bowls, walls, side tables – that could do with a change and try mixing paint with bicarb soda for a textured finish that adheres to glazed surfaces,” says Tilly.

9 Sander An electric or batteryoperated sander is essential for any sanding project – stripping back furniture, removing rust or prepping a surface for paint. “It halves the time it takes to hand sand and the dust catcher helps contain mess,” says Sam.

10 Microfibre cloths These are probably Sam’s most used ‘tool’ for wet or dry projects: “I use them to mop up paint spills, polish metal, clean surfaces and wipe away sawdust.” Best of all they can be washed and re-used countless times.

TURN YOUR TRASH INTO TREASURE WITH THREE EASY MAKEOVERS

LAMP REVAMP

We gave the shiny stand a matt white update, then reduced the drop-fitting shade height to a modern drum shape with on-trend macramé cord stripes.

1 Remove the lampshade from the stand. Mask off the electrical cord and light socket with painter’s tape and clean the stand thoroughly using sugar soap wipes.

2 Working on a drop sheet, spray the stand using primer and paint, holding the can 300mm from the surface and moving left to right to apply three light coats, leaving to dry after each.

Tools & materials

3 Cut the fabric from the wire lampshade frame with a utility knife, leaving a top ring with the attached drop fitting, and a separate base ring. Remove adhesive residue with sugar soap wipes.

4 To make a drum-shaped frame, centre the top ring over the base ring, standing it up on the drop fitting. Measure from outside the base ring to inside the drop fitting and cut three 6mm dowel pieces to length with a mitre box and handsaw.

n Screwdriver

n 7mm plywood sheet

n Chipboard box

n 180-grit abrasive paper

n Timber adhesive

n Timber filler with scraper

n Four 3/8” vertical leg plates

n Four 125mm x 65mm round furniture legs

n Timber stain

n Scandinavian oil

1 Make a top and base by marking around both open ends of the box on 7mm plywood and cut using a circular saw with straightedge. Tip: Elevate the plywood or work off the side of the bench to ensure the blade is unimpeded underneath.

2 Sand around the top and base with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove breakout. Apply adhesive around the raw edges of the cube, position the top and base, securing with nails 5mm in from the edges. Wipe away excess adhesive and leave to dry.

3 Check the width of each side (our box is 400mm x 395mm) and divide by 30mm for the number of dowel pieces. Measure the height to cut dowel on a mitre saw, using a clamp to set the length. Smooth the cuts with abrasive paper to round them over.

4 Test-fit the dowel, one side at a time, adjusting the spacing slightly as needed. Apply adhesive along the back of each piece, reposition and leave to dry before working on the next side. Tip: This box has 14 pieces with overhang on two sides and 13 on the others.

5 On the top, use a scraper to smooth filler into the nail holes. Leave to dry, then sand off excess. Smooth all over the box, creasing the abrasive paper to sand away any adhesive along the dowel joins. Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust.

6 On the base, position leg plates in the corners, marking the holes to predrill with a 3mm bit and securing with the supplied screws. Predrill the centre holes with a 9mm bit for the leg lug screws, then twist them in to be flush against the plates.

7 Use a cloth to apply stain over the top, sides and legs, pressing it along the dowel joins for even coverage. Leave to penetrate for a few minutes, then wipe away excess. Repeat to apply Scandinavian oil with a clean cloth, leaving to dry thoroughly.

SIDE BAR

To help her daughter practise dancing at home, Bunnings Workshop community member Alyce (@Alyce_Pham) installed a ballet barre in her bedroom. See more at workshop.bunnings.com.au/barre. You can adapt an off-the-shelf timber handrail system to create one in your child’s bedroom. Just be sure to attach the brackets to wall studs.

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (mask, ear and eye protection)

n Tape measure and pencil

n Mitre saw

n Stud finder

n Microfibre cloths

n 600mm level

n Drill with 3mm and 4mm bits

n 4mm hex key

n 43mm Tasmanian oak dowel•

n 240-grit abrasive paper

n Furniture oil

n Tape

n Two 70mm stainless steel handrail brackets

n 12G x 50mm timber screws

n Two 30mm stainless steel handrail caps

n 10G x 50mm timber screws

n Superglue

n 10G x 25mm timber screws

1 Cut the 43mm dowel to 600mm with a mitre saw. Tip: For a longer barre, locate studs for brackets no more than 900mm apart, and cut the dowel with maximum 450mm overhang either end.

2 Smooth all over and around the ends with 240-grit abrasive paper to remove breakout and round-over the edges slightly. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Apply furniture oil with a clean cloth and leave to dry.

3 Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs, marking them with tape.

4 Measure up from the floor to mark the height of the barre, then measure 110mm down, position a handrail bracket and use it as a template to mark holes on the wall over the studs.

Use a level to check the holes are in line.

5 Use a 4mm bit to predrill into the wall, then secure the brackets with 12G x 50mm screws, checking for level again.

6 Use a connector from a handrail cap as a template to mark the centres of the dowel ends. Predrill with a 3mm bit, then secure the cap connectors with 10G x 50mm screws.

7 Apply superglue around the connectors and attach the end caps, leaving to dry.

8 Tighten the top of the brackets with a hex key, position the barre on the brackets, checking the overhang is equal. Mark holes through the brackets underneath to predrill the barre with a 3mm bit, securing with 25mm screws.

COVER STORY

This children’s bookcase displays picture books within easy reach.

Inspired by Montessori-style furniture, where pieces are designed for children to use on their own, Bunnings Workshop member Rufaro (@diy_hausdesigns) built an easily accessible display case for his daughter. Made from budget-friendly plywood, it has simple, clean lines and an attractive natural finish.

“Our daughter has a keen interest in books, which we want to nurture. So I designed something she could use,” he says.

Rufaro used a trim router to round over the edges of the bookcase and engrave his daughter’s initials into the front. “The routed edges make it safer and celebrate the layers of plywood in a lovely way.”

CUT TING LIST

From a plywood sheet, use a circular saw with a straightedge to cut two 1200mm x 900mm pieces.

From one piece, cut two side panels 900mm x 600mm.

From the other, cut a 900mm x 280mm lower, middle and top backing panel, plus three 900mm x 120mm shelf slats.

From the offcut, cut a 600mm x 150mm front panel.

n When using power tools to cut and sand, always wear the recommended safety gear and work in a well-ventilated area.

n This bookcase is for displaying books only and is not suitable for climbing.

3 On the back of all backing panels, mark a line 5mm up from the base using a combination square, then use a countersinking bit to predrill five holes 50mm from the ends and 200mm apart. On the front of the lower and middle panels, mark a line 90mm down from the top to predrill five holes. Sand over all pieces to remove breakout.

1 On a side panel, 30mm from the top, mark a 135mm x 50mm handle cutout 30mm in from the back edge. Mark a curved edge from above the handle, out to the side 300mm up from the base, down to 70mm in from the front edge. Along the base, mark 50mm up and 150mm in from either side for the base curve. Tip: We used a strip of flexible plastic tongue to shape the curves.

2 Use a jigsaw to cut the curves. To make the handle, clamp the plywood to the bench and drill into the corners with a 10mm bit, then cut with the jigsaw. Position on top of the remaining side panel, base and back edges flush, to transfer the curves and handle; repeat the cuts. Tip: Work off the bench to ensure the blade is unimpeded.

6 Position the shelves on the outside of both side panels, checking the distance from the edges, and mark around them. Predrill three holes each panel, two each slat. Install screws at the top and lower panels to protrude 3mm. Apply adhesive and position the shelves on the screws, secure and install remaining screws. Predrill, centre and secure the front panel.

4 To assemble the shelves, apply adhesive along a slat, position and clamp it against the lower panel to secure through the holes with 30mm screws. Apply adhesive to another slat and position against the back of the lower panel, clamp and secure with screws, then repeat to attach the middle panel, the remaining slat and top panel.

5 Run a trim router with round-over bit around all edges of the side and front panels, along the front of the shelf assembly and top of the backing panels. Mark initials onto the front panel, clamp it to the bench. Change the router to a straight bit, check the depth is less than 10mm, then cut the initials.

7 Sand over the sides to remove pencil marks and breakout around the screws. Wipe all over the bookcase with a damp cloth to remove dust, then apply two coats of clear varnish with a mini roller, leaving to dry after each. Tip: Seal the back first, then flip the bookcase right side up to finish.

4 Position the back supports under the slatted base, equal distance from the ends. Predrill through the back of the frame, apply adhesive to the supports and secure with 30mm screws. At the top, secure through the base into the supports with 50mm brad nails.

5 Position a slat at the back, flush with the bottom of the frame and against the back supports. From the outside, on both sides, mark 20mm and 70mm from the back uprights, 10mm up. Predrill, apply adhesive, then position and secure with 40mm screws.

6 To install the front slat, on both sides of the frame mark 20mm and 70mm from the front upright, 10mm up. Predrill and countersink, apply adhesive, then position and secure with 40mm screws. Centre the middle slat and repeat to predrill and secure.

7 Fill all screw holes with timber filler, leave to dry and sand flush. Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust. Mask over any parts of the cot that aren’t timber, position it on sawhorses and prepare the area with a drop sheet.

8 Pour primer into a paint sprayer and lightly coat all over, flipping the cot upside down to coat the underside, leave to dry. Clean the spray gun and fill with paint. Beginning with the cot upside down, lightly apply two coats all over, leaving to dry after each coat.

9 Cover the mattress in a fitted cot sheet and stitch ties to matching pillow covers to attach to the frame. Tip: If you have a sewing machine, make a new mattress cover and cushions from a curtain, as we did here.

Keep in mind…

n You may require an Allen key or hex head bit to remove the front gate of the cot.

n Although this cot frame has been reinforced, it’s not suitable for adults or children weighing more than 30kg.

n When using a nail gun, wear eye protection and ensure the nose is flat against the piece before pulling the trigger.

HOW TO READ YOUR CAT PURR-FECTLY

Felines can be enigmatic by nature, but Kylie McKendry from the Cat Protection Society of NSW offers these tips on kitty body language to help you read your cat better. Wagging tail: Dogs wag tails when happy, but a swishing or flicking cat tail can signal agitation. This is a cue for you to bring down the excitement level if you’re playing together, or postpone the cuddles to give your feline friend more personal space.

Ears pointing sideways: This can be a sign your cat is feeling frightened or threatened. Proceed with caution; better still, leave your cat alone and let it approach you when it’s ready (and the ears are straight up and alert).

Top coats

Now the chilly weather is here, a coat for your pooch is about more than just fashion

2

1 START WITH SIZE Even if the label on the coat indicates what breeds it’s for, your dog could be a different size than average. Measure from the collar to where the tail starts, and around the neck and chest.

What are those eyes trying to tell you?

Rolling onto their back: While this is a demonstration of trust, it isn’t an invitation for you to rub your cat’s belly, and trying it may earn you a swipe or two! Stick to stroking your cat’s chin and cheeks.

TWEET DREAMS

THINK ABOUT PURPOSE

Consider when your dog will need the coat (hint: generally when you need one, they will, too).

FOCUS ON FIT The coat should be snug but not tight. Check for any straps that might irritate the skin. For feisty dogs, Velcro can be easier than zips.

Regular grooming is an important part of pet care. Brushing out loose hair and knots can help to prevent matts forming in the coat and remove potential irritants like grass seeds, while trimming nails can deter discomfort and even infection. Grooming can also be a pleasant experience for your pet – and a time to bond!

Violet rumble

Let shades of purple reign in your garden this winter

Lavender

This sun-loving, compact perennial, with aromatic grey-green foliage and vibrant blooms, is a sensory delight. The flowers, which generally peak in the warmer months, are mostly purple, lilac or lavender, but there are white and pink forms, too. For a splash of cool-season colour, try the ‘Winter Lace’ range.

Daphne

Much loved for its clusters of fragrant pale-pink and white flowers and glossy green leaves, this evergreen shrub has a neat habit, growing to about 1m tall and wide. Native to cool climates, it is frost-tolerant once established. For warmer climes, try Daphne ‘Eternal Fragrance’.

Winter rose

A star of the winter garden, this low-growing perennial has masses of delicate, cup-shaped flowers on upright stems. The range of colours, forms and patterns is large and varied, making it ideal for adding interest to semi-shaded spots. Plant in well-drained soil enriched with compost.

Native violet

This native grows into a dense groundcover, producing small white/mauve flowers throughout the year that float above a sea of green foliage. Best suited to a shady spot, it spreads via stolons (horizontal, above-ground stems), so is easy to dig up and propagate.

FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Place in full sun with well-drained soil, prune after flowering and feed with slow-release fertiliser.

Prefers a spot in dappled shade with morning sun. Good drainage is essential as it’s prone to root rot.

For visual impact, plant en masse and mix with other woodland-style plants, such as hosta or brunnera.

Plant around pavers and stepping stones, underneath trees or in hanging baskets.
