Bunnings Workshop community member Mariana (@lifestylebymari) executed a fantastic fix in her bathroom using just four products. Thanks to Dulux ‘Metalshield’ epoxy enamel spray paint, 240-grit abrasive paper, Scotch Blue painter’s tape and some paper to protect surrounding areas, Mariana gave her tapware a modern transformation. “It elevated the bathroom without having to change too much and it has lasted so long without scratches,” she says. Give the lawn some TLC by fertilising with a treatment that kills off weeds while feeding the grass.

Reduce food waste at home by starting your own worm farm. It’s easy to set up and worms will happily eat through kitchen scraps, newspaper, cardboard, vacuum dust and even the dog’s hair!

Start planning the autumn vegie patch. Remove dying plants, clear weeds and improve the soil with organic matter.

Treat someone special with a gift that keeps on giving – a plant! Opt for a fragrant rose or gardenia, choose exotic foliage plants like rex begonias and calatheas or try pretty flowers (see below). Pair with a liquid fertiliser to nourish growth.

Love a quick salad? Plant microgreens! These mini versions of many herbs and leafy greens are ready to harvest within two weeks of sowing seeds.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

RENOVATION INSPIRATION

IN THIS NEW SERIES, OUR EXPERTS TRANSFORM AN IN-NEED-OF-LOVE HOUSE INTO A STUNNING MODERN HOME

Do you want to turn your house into a luxe-looking home without a full-scale rebuild? Well, it’s time to Make It Happen. Watch interior designer and stylist Jono Fleming, landscape designer and landscaper Inge Jabara and builder Tim Clark breathe new life into a typical Australian home in Melbourne’s suburbs –with the power of DIY! “Whether it’s in the garden or interior, there are pockets of design ideas that could work for any style or size of home,” says Inge.

The dream team

When talking Australian style, few know it better than interiors expert Jono Fleming. With a career spanning 15 years, he is a pro at home transformations. Jono’s creativity comes to life within this 1980s abode, while working with award-winning garden guru Inge. And no reno is complete without a trusty tradie. Builder Tim Clark rounds

out the Make It Happen team, bringing bucketloads of experience and a knack for DIY hacks.

The mission

‘Modern Australian’ is the brief for this dated home. “It was stuck in a very particular era,” says Jono. And the team has thought of it all: from creating a backyard market garden to installing bathroom skylights and dedicated kitchen appliance storage. “We actually did a poll of what Australians would like to see in their home,” explains Tim.

The details

See the team take the front garden, facade and entrance from ordinary to awesome when the first two episodes of Make It Happen: The House Project drop on March 2. Follow the series at bunnings.com.au/ the-house-project and pick up the next three issues of Bunnings magazine to be inspired to make it happen at your house too!

Can you bring warmth, better flow and greater functionality to your living space, too?

Watch the team add street appeal to a suburban Melbourne home

There’s a reason why the humble two-by-two cube unit is so popular: it’s the chameleon of flatpack furniture! This affordable design classic is supremely practical as is, but can take on new life with nothing more than a well-executed paint job. Or go all out with the power tools, ply and dowel to create a gorgeous custom piece. Entry ways, passages, play areas and living rooms all benefit from stylish storage, so be inspired by our ideas.

COLOUR BLOCK

Wearing eye protection and a mask, create a ‘key’ for the paint to grip to by roughening the melamine surfaces you plan to colour with 180-grit abrasive paper.

Wipe off dust, then carefully apply narrow specialty masking tape to front and back, pressing along the shelf edges to achieve a crisp line.

Using an angled brush for awkward corners and a mini roller, apply a maximum-adhesion primer such as Dulux

‘Precision’ (if bubbles appear, sand and reapply primer), then at least two coats of water-based enamel – but don’t cheat on the drying times if you want a schmick result!

Our cheerfully coloured toy storage shelves (above) are perfect for a play zone. For the hallway stand (left), we chose more sophisticated terracotta and coral hues, then completed the look using four painted legs attached with furniture leg plates and supplied screws.

Assemble the cube unit following supplied instructions, then take it outside on a cool, dry, still day to paint

n Handsaw with mitre box

n Cloths

n Angled paintbrush

n Mini roller with spare cover and tray

n Drop sheet

n Drill with 3mm, 8mm, driver and 4mm bits

n Flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers

n Two sets of pliers

n Two 897mm x 600mm x 7mm BC grade pine plywood panels•

n Eight 2.4m x 30mm x 12mm half-round timber dowels•

n 180-grit abrasive paper with sanding block

n Timber adhesive

n 340mm lengths of timber offcuts

n Primer

n Low sheen water-based enamel paint

n Four 150mm round furniture legs

n 760mm x 760mm x 390mm cube unit, assembled

n Four ⅜" (9.5mm) furniture leg plates with supplied screws

n Four 70mm x 50mm x 1.6mm fixed-pin butt hinges

n Two 128mm cabinet handles with supplied screws

n Magnetic cabinet catches, optional

1 From pine panels, use a circular saw with straightedge to cut two 690mm x 340mm doors (or have them cut in store). Use a handsaw and mitre box to cut half-round dowel into 22 lengths, each 690mm. Smooth all edges with 180-grit abrasive paper and wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

2 Position doors on a flat surface, right side up. Apply adhesive along the back of the dowel pieces and position them on the doors, working from the outside in to leave a small gap at the centre. Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth and place timber offcuts over the top as weights, leaving to cure.

3 Prep, prime and paint the cube unit, following the instructions in ‘Colour Block’ on page 16. Prime and apply two coats of paint over the doors and furniture legs, leaving to dry after each coat.

4 To install the legs, place the cube unit upside down on a drop sheet. Position the furniture leg plates inside the screws of the cube to mark the holes. Pre-drill the centre hole with an 8mm bit and the screws with a 3mm bit, then secure with the supplied screws using a flathead screwdriver. Twist the legs firmly into place.

5 Position two hinges on the back of each door, 160mm from the top and base, using them as templates to mark the holes, pre-drilling with a 3mm bit and securing with the supplied screws. Place the unit on the ground, facing up, to position the doors and mark the hinges inside, predrilling and securing. Tip: Enlist a second pair of hands to hold the doors while marking and securing.

6 On the inside of the doors, measure 280mm from the top to position the top of the handles, using them as a template to mark the holes, then pre-drill right through with a 4mm bit. Snap the screws to length using two sets of pliers, and secure from the back, into the handles, with a screwdriver. Tip: Centre magnetic cabinet catches over the shelf to keep doors closed.

Cover the screws and the centre join with filler, leaving to dry. Smooth the MDF edges and all over the cubes with 180-grit abrasive paper, then wipe away dust with a cloth. Apply primer and two coats of water-based enamel to the MDF and cubes, leaving to dry after each.

Tip: No need to paint the top of the cubes or underneath.

3 On the front of the cubes, apply construction adhesive along the top and down the sides to position the MDF arch. Apply adhesive over the top of the cubes to position the MDF top. Clamp, wipe away any excess adhesive with a clean damp cloth and leave to cure. Tip: Enlist a second pair of hands to help lift the MDF pieces into position.

Keep in mind...

n Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when assembling the cube unit. To help prevent toppling, anchor units to the wall using the supplied brackets and fixings suitable for your wall type.

n When cutting, sanding and drilling, always wear safety gear and work in a well-ventilated area.

‘Futura MK2’ WELS 4-star 7.5L/min rail shower, $160, I/N: 0307295

With more than 130 years of experience designing and engineering bathroom hardware, Methven knows how to produce the perfect shower. With a wide range of looks, plus varied shower experiences, there’s a Methven shower for every bathroom and every family. Plus there’s a lifetime warranty on all showers, for peace of mind.

TAP INTO TECHNOLOGY

Methven is dedicated to innovation, creating water-efficient showering without losing the luxurious feel of a thorough drenching. Selecting the perfect shower for your family starts with exploring this technology – will it be the invigorating force of Satinjet® or the spa-style softness of Airstream®?

WHAT IS AIRSTREAM ®?

Airstream ® technology allows air to be drawn in and mixed with water at high pressure. Each air-infused droplet then emerges from the showerhead as a larger, softer, rain-like drop. Airstream® is available throughout the Krome

collection in matte black and chrome, so then it’s just a matter of choosing the look and functionality you need. The Krome Round Overhead Shower (1), enhances the rain-like experience, and has easy screw-on, screw-off DIY installation – no drilling required! Great for small spaces, the traditional-look Krome Swan Neck Wall Shower (2) and the height-adjustable Krome Hi Rise Shower (3) both offer extra height to take advantage of every centimetre of space in your shower recess. Combining a fixed overhead and handspray, the chic Krome 3 Function Short Shower System (4) has three

water flow settings (normal, massage or combination) so you can personalise your shower experience.

WHAT IS SATINJET®?

Satinjet® uses unique twin-jet technology to essentially bounce water droplets off each other, with more than 300,000 droplets per second delivering a thorough soaking with less water. Capture this energising technology in a shower to suit you. Being height adjustable, the Maku MK2 Rail Shower (5) allows the whole family to enjoy a full body shower experience. Give your fixed overhead a boost with the Satinjet®-enabled Futura MK2 Hand Shower (6) – this handset on a hose offers maximum flexibility for washing your hair, the kids and even rinsing the shower screen. For a speedy bathroom upgrade, screw on the Futura MK2 handset (7) and welcome Satinjet® technology to your shower in style.

10fast fixes

MAKE THIS WEEKEND THE ONE WHEN YOU TACKLE THAT QUICK BUT OHSO-SATISFYING JOB YOU’VE BEEN MEANING TO DO FOR AGES!

Words KYLIE JACKES

e’ve all got them: annoying little chores around the house that we keep putting off. But once armed with the right tools and equipment, actually doing them can be surprisingly swift and gratifying. Here’s our advice on 10 tasks you can DIY this weekend.

PLAN IT MAINTENANCE TIPS

Renew silicone

Replacing cracked and discoloured silicone around the bath, shower, mirrors and sink will instantly refresh a bathroom, says Bunnings magazine contributor and DIY specialist Natasha Dickins (@LittleRedIndustries). “This is an easy job even for DIY novices – scrape out as much existing silicone as possible, then apply a thick layer of silicone remover and leave it for a few hours before cleaning off with a cloth soaked in methylated spirits,” explains Natasha. “Apply new silicone with a caulking gun or, even easier, use an all-in-one sealant product with attached applicator.”

Get lines in order

Clotheslines get a lot of use and may need some maintenance if, over time, the cords loosen or wear, but the good news is the solutions are simple. Replacement cord is available off the shelf in store, says Damien Cunliffe at Daytek. “And parts can be sourced through the Special Orders Desk.”

2 3

If you need a new clothesline or are considering relocating an old one, installation is a relatively straightforward DIY job. For wallmounted models, use a hammer drill and masonry bit to fit the brackets to brick with masonry screws. If your fold-down line is freestanding, then it’s a case of either setting the posts of an in-ground model in foundation holes filled with aggregate and concrete, or fixing the posts’ base plates onto a concrete patio with the recommended fasteners. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s manual carefully –especially the safety instructions.

Tighten loose seats

1 4

A loose quick-release toilet seat can be fixed in a flash. “Wearing gloves, push the hinge-release buttons at the back of the toilet seat to remove it,” explains Natasha. “Use a small flathead screwdriver to pry the metal fixing caps off the plastic discs underneath, then put the seat back in position to hold the pins while tightening the screws. Lift off the seat again to clip on the caps, then reinstall. When you hear the hinges click into place, the job’s done.”

Sort out the pantry

Dealing with a disorganised pantry can seem like an overwhelming chore, but the benefits of doing it are huge.

Professional organiser Bonnie Black (littlemissorganised.com.au) says it can result in less food wastage and make cooking quicker and easier.

For a complete pantry overhaul, she suggests setting aside half a day to pull out all the contents so items can be categorised, containerised and reshelved according to frequency of use. “Good organisation systems include a carousel for sauces, oils and vinegars, tiered shelving for cans and a large basket for kids’ after-school snacks,” Bonnie says. She recommends a consistent storage style, whether it’s clear stackable containers that maximise your pantry space, or recycled jars with handwritten labels.

Stop the drops

Fixing a standard tap with an annoying drip can take a mere 15 minutes once you have the right parts. “Generally, the cause is worn parts like the washer, O-ring or jumper valve. Before getting started, check with the manufacturer or local authority if you’re permitted to repair yourself, or whether you need to call in a licensed plumber,” advises Natasha. “If it’s a DIY job, make note of the product and pick up a readyto-go repair kit.” To get started, ensure the water is turned off at the mains, then turn on the tap. Disassemble by removing the handle (you may need a small screwdriver), flange, then spindle using an adjustable spanner. Remove the worn parts, replace with new ones and reassemble.

Fill the dings

If your home’s walls have succumbed to holes from picture hooks or door handle-inflicted gouges, grab a fast fix off the shelf. “For small holes, mini kits have everything you need to sand, smooth in filler and scrape away the excess,” explains Natasha Dickins. “The longest part of the process is the 30-minute drying time.” For larger holes, Natasha recommends using a suitably sized self-adhesive patch with a multipurpose joint compound. “Once the final filler coat has been sanded, simply repaint the area,” she adds.

Give timber TLC

Patchy colouring, fading, flaking and peeling are tell-tale signs your exterior timber needs attention. Oiling a deck or outdoor furniture is a job that can be knocked over in a day, but give yourself a weekend so you can take your time prepping the surface and allow generous drying time between coats. Brenna Mathews of Cabot’s says cleaning is a vital first step. “Without removing surface contaminants like dirt, mould and oil, timber can struggle to absorb a new coating and continue to discolour, so give the surface a good sweep and use a specifically formulated cleaner,” she says.

Keep in mind…

n Before undertaking any DIY activity, be sure you have the necessary skills, use the correct tools and wear the appropriate safety equipment.

n All professional plumbing work must be carried out by a licensed plumber.

n Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional.

n Follow product packaging instructions for accurate dilution of strong cleaning solutions. Wear a mask and gloves for serious cleaning tasks and store out of reach of children and pets.

n Use the right ladder for the job, make sure it has non-slip feet and is set up on a flat, stable and solid surface. Wear sturdy footwear, maintain three points of contact (for example, both feet and one hand) on it at all times and have another person nearby in case you need help. Use a ladder rest or gutter clamp instead of leaning the ladder directly on guttering.

ABOVE Scooping debris from gutters takes only a few minutes, but

De-hassle hoses

Problem hose connections sap the joy from gardening.

Georgia Liversage at Holman says common issues include blow-offs due to loosely attached fittings or low-quality connectors that can’t grip to the hose. Hand-tighten the connector to ensure it’s closely threaded but, if that doesn’t work, opt for high-quality connectors that have a separate compression ring. To straighten out a kinked hose, Georgia’s tip is to stretch it out in the sun for a few hours. “Allow it to fully cool before wrapping it in a figure-8 shape to prevent kinks,” she says. “Or switch to a retractable hose reel.”

Georgia Liversage, Holman

Clear gutters

Although easy to ignore, clearing gutters is a good home-maintenance habit. Work around the perimeter on a sturdy, level ladder and scoop out leaves into a bucket. To prevent leaf build-up and reduce upkeep, consider installing gutter guards.

Mulch beds

Spending a few hours topping garden beds with mulch is a rewarding job with longlasting benefits. Doing this provides organic matter, which enriches the soil, helps lock in moisture and suppresses weeds to create a lowermaintenance garden. Good options include pea straw and lucerne mulch and bark-based varieties such as pine, cypress and hardwood. Spread coarse mulch 2-6cm thick and water in well so it settles.

Are there gaps in your garden that need filling? For most gardeners, there’s always room for more plants – and the good news is you can boost your collection using what you already have.

Propagation is a way of creating new plants from existing ones. And, as Gopika Sambantham, founder of SFA Landscape Design (@design.sfa landscape) points out, propagating not only saves money but is also a lovely way to share your plants with friends and family. “It’s fun, feel-good and fills you with joy,” she says.

There are several different ways to do this – read on to find out how to start your own little plant factory!

Sowing from seed

Fothergill’s recommends following the instructions on the back of each seed pack to get the best results.

You can also collect and use your own seed from most plants. Seed heads are produced once flowers are finished, so don’t deadhead blooms if you want to collect seed. The process varies between plants, so it’s best to do a little research first – for example, you can harvest seed from ripe tomatoes, but you need to wait for the seedpods to dry on coriander.

Ideally, seed should be collected from open-pollinated varieties, that is, plants pollinated by natural means, as opposed to hybrid plants. Hybrids have been artificially crossed to produce plants with desirable traits, but the seeds from these are not likely to grow ‘true to type’, and resulting plants will be different from the hybrid.

best with evergreen and herbaceous perennials that have a clumping habit, such as hostas, clivias, salvias, kangaroo paws and some ornamental grasses. Over time, as these plants spread, they can become crowded and won’t perform or flower as well as they used to. So dividing them gives you more stock to fill gaps and keeps the parent plants looking their best.

To divide a clump, dig around the edge of the plant and use a garden fork to gently lift it out of the ground or pot. Gently tease apart the root ball; if it’s difficult to work with, use a sharp knife or spade to divide it, ensuring each section has viable roots and shoots.

TOP PICKS

Seeds are one of nature’s wonderful gifts, containing everything needed to grow a plant from scratch, all neatly bundled into a tiny package. Most plants can be grown from seed, although some are trickier than others and may require extra measures, such as soaking or scarification (weakening the seed coating) to encourage germination. Sowing requirements vary according to plant type, too, so Bianca Boman of Mr

Plant division

Dividing plants involves removing and replanting a section of the parent plant that has its own roots. It works

“Replant or repot each plant in a good-quality mix and water regularly to keep the mix moist,” says Bianca. Most perennials and some ornamental grasses should be divided in winter or early spring, before new growth has started.

Stem cuttings

For many indoor and perennial plants, the easiest way to propagate is with stem cuttings. Choose a firm, healthy stem and take a cutting at least 15cm long that has a couple of nodes. Trim the base just below a leaf node and remove lower foliage, leaving a pair of leaves at the top.

To achieve the best results and promote root development, Gopika Sambantham suggests dipping the base of the cutting into rooting hormone. Then insert it into a pot filled with moistened propagating mix, position in a brightly lit spot out of direct sunlight, and water regularly to keep the soil moist. You can also use a mini greenhouse or plastic cloche to maintain warmth and humidity. If propagating indoors or during cooler months, Bianca Boman recommends a heat pad. “An electric heat pad helps mimic spring soil temperatures, encouraging the cuttings to put energy into developing roots and shoots faster,” she says.

Stem cuttings can also be propagated in water. Instead of inserting cuttings into a propagating mix, they’re placed in a glass of water. “Change the water weekly, and when enough roots form, transplant into individual pots,” advises Bianca.

Layering

Keep in mind…

This involves encouraging the parent plant to produce new plants, which remain attached while they grow roots. Once healthy roots have formed, the new plants can be severed and transplanted. “Layering works best with plants like monstera and devil’s ivy that develop aerial roots,” says Bianca Boman. “It also works well for plants like strawberries that root easily when nodes touch the ground.” Layering is

best done in spring and summer when plants are actively growing. “Bend stems downwards, pin the nodes to the ground and lightly cover with soil,” says Bianca (see above right). For indoor plants, especially those with thicker stems like philodendrons and monstera, try aerial-layering. Cover a node with moistened sphagnum moss and wrap with plastic to keep it moist. When roots form, the new plant is ready to be detached and transplanted.

you can embrace the latest design trends from across the globe with genuine European-made tiles, without the designer price tag.

TILES FOR EVERY STYLE

The Gayafores collection has been designed and curated so there’s a tile for every style of interior, from cool contemporary to a heritage home. For homemakers and renovators looking to get creative, there’s a simple three-step design process that empowers you to use the range to bring your vision to life.

THREE STEPS TO SUCCESS

The first step is to pick a base tile that can be used on both floors and walls.

The next step is to select a decorative or textured tile to complement the base tile (on the floor or wall). The third and final step is to choose a square patterned tile to add an extra accent to your finished masterpiece.

With such a wide variety of tile designs to choose from, you can follow these simple steps to make a brave and bold style statement, or stick to the more understated options for a neutral, pared-back, timeless look.

DIY office nook

With working from home now the norm for so many, carving out a designated office space is a way to create clear separation between work and family life. This joinery project adds functionality to an existing alcove or an under-utilised wardrobe cavity. An overhead cabinet provides a handy place to tuck away files, spare stationery or even guest linen, neatly concealed behind VJ panelling. This is a great project for an experienced handyperson or a keen DIYer ready to step up their skills.

When installing into wall studs, if there is resistance, pre-drill by pushing the bit in and out, gradually going deeper. Use the same action to drive screws.

1 Prepare the area by removing the wardrobe fittings and skirting (keeping these to refit later). Use a stud finder to locate wall studs, noggins, ceiling battens, power and other services, making a note of the setout and marking the stud positions on the floor with a pencil. Tip: We trimmed away the cornice to fit.

2 To line the back wall, cut two VJ sheets to 1890mm long. Apply adhesive to the back of one. Put 10mm packers on the floor to position it 10mm from the side wall, securing into studs using a nail gun with 50mm brads. Cut the remaining sheet to fit, less 10mm. Join with the supplied tongue cut to length and repeat to secure. Cover the brads with filler.

3 For the side walls, cut two 600mm timber panels to 1870mm long. Position them against the sheeting and countersink over the studs with an 8G combination bit, securing with adhesive and 65mm screws. Sand away any breakout and cover screws with filler. Tip: The VJ sheeting finishes higher than the timber to allow for the shelf brackets.

4 For the shelf, cut a panel to fit wall to wall, less 5mm clearance. Countersink holes 13mm in from the ends, to secure onto the sides with adhesive and 50mm screws. Position three brackets along the top with one hole of each over a stud, pre-drilling with a 3mm bit. Secure with 65mm screws into studs and 25mm screws into the sheeting and shelf.

5 For the desk, measure 750mm up to position three brackets each side and three along the back with one hole of each over a stud. Pre-drill and secure with 65mm screws into studs and 25mm screws into sheeting. Cut and position a 600mm benchtop to span between the brackets, less 5mm clearance. Pre-drill from underneath to secure with 25mm screws.

6 Cut a 75mm strip of panel as the header, notching out sections of cornice with a utility knife to fit it between the walls, against the ceiling and in line with the shelf (check with a level). Countersink into the battens to secure with adhesive and 65mm screws. Cut the remaining panel to adhere to the side walls above the shelf, factory edges forward.

• Timbers and wall linings vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information. Paint colours may vary on application.

7 To make the door, cut and join VJ sheeting to fit, less 5mm clearance all around. Cut merbau lengths for the back to position flush along the top and 15mm in from the sides and base. Secure with adhesive and 25mm screws. Use a hinge jig to drill four holes along the frame top and matching holes under the header.

8 Sand and wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Mask around all timber and brush on two coats of varnish. Cover the desk with a drop sheet and mask around the sheeting to roll two coats of paint onto the wall and door. Cut bevelled moulding to cover the joins, sand and secure with adhesive. Tip: Leave each coat to dry.

9 To finish the door, use a 6mm bit to add a handle, centred 30mm up. For stoppers, pre-drill through dowel offcuts with a 6mm bit, securing 30mm up and 40mm in with 50mm screws. Install the inset hinges and add pneumatic stays, using a screwdriver to secure. Fit skirting against the back wall, securing with adhesive.

COLOURING IN

Whether it’s calming neutrals or an energising pop of primary hues, colour is the most effective tool in your styling kit – and the first consideration when buying pots. Use it to cement the tone of your space –charcoal grey looks fantastic in a contemporary scheme; a coastal garden calls for soft whites and sandy beiges; terracotta is the go-to Mediterranean accessory. Bunnings now groups pots by colour for a more simple process of selection. “This new layout makes it so much easier to find exactly what you need and to find the perfect match for your existing decor,” says Bunnings outdoor decor buyer Anna Safaryan. It’s helpful if you’re using one colour option to blend pots in varied shapes, styles and materials.

SIZE IT UP

The only thing better than one outdoor pot is more of them! While a single large pot can be striking, a grouping of several planters often makes a bigger statement and gives a space a more layered look. Choose a diverse range of shapes and sizes, which also allows you to fill them with plants in various sizes for a good mix of heights –for example, try filling the largest pot with a small tree or perhaps a palm with jaunty upright foliage, then group smaller pot-and-plant pairings in front.

Top tip: Fibre composite pots are ideal when you need extra-large pots for bigger plants, as they’re strikingly lightweight for their size.

PERFECT PAIRINGS

A successfully styled pot arrangement is a tale of two halves – the perfect pot teamed with just the right plant. A healthy plant is a good-looking plant, so consider the needs of the plant first and foremost, such as how much root volume it needs and its climate requirements. Beyond this, it’s all about picking a plant and pot combo that suits your garden style! For a coastal or boho garden, lush and strappy tropical plants in oversized pots might be the look you’re after. A Mediterranean garden calls for terracotta pots (try terracotta-look plastic pots for lighter weight and easier handling) with dusty-toned foliage, like olive trees, rosemary plants and succulents. Formal garden more your style? Try a glazed pot with a topiary tree or buxus ball.

Whether made of lightweight plastic or timber, Mediterraneanlook terracotta or clever composite options, planters can help to spruce up your space and give your greenery a happy home. Read on for a potted summary of the options, plus tips on setting up potted plants for success!

WHICH POT WHERE?

Looking for a giant planter for a statement tree, or a lightweight number for a window box or flower pots? Before you head in store, get to know your outdoor pot options. Pots can be made from a range of different materials, but choosing which is right for you depends on where it will live and what sort of plant you want to put in it, as well as your preferred size, style and budget.

TOP TIP! ADD A LAYER OF MULCH TO POTS – IT SLOWS WATER EVAPORATION, REDUCES SOIL TEMPERATURE AND DETERS WEEDS

FIBRE COMPOSITE POTS

Strikingly lightweight for their size, fibre composite pots – typically fibre-clay or fibre-cement – are a game changer when you’re looking for extra large pots for big outdoor plants or trees.

PLASTIC POTS

By far the most economical option, plastic pots are a great choice when you’re buying in bulk to create a potted garden from scratch.

CERAMIC POTS

Painted or unpainted terracotta and glazed ceramic pots are a popular choice. Clay is heavier than many other materials, which is great for exposed locations because these pots are less likely to blow over in high winds.

TIMBER POTS

Timber planters lend a quirky, rustic look to the garden, and are gorgeous paired with clusters of flowering annuals or clouds of delicate herbs for a relaxed country vibe. Timber-look resin planters are even better, as they’re lightweight and affordable.

FILL IT UP!

To turn your pot into a home for greenery, start by finding the right potting mix for the job. Scotts Osmocote has the perfect mix for almost every plant but if you’re looking for a mix to do it all, try Scotts Osmocote Premium Plus Potting Mix

EASY FEEDING

Keep that ‘garden centre’ glow on all your potted plants by treating them to a regular feed. Scotts Osmocote Pour+Feed All Purpose Liquid Fertiliser is the easiest way to keep your plants well fed and loving life. Each capful is enriched with seaweed and a balanced formula to keep your plants glowing (and growing!) all season long.

MIX AND MATCH

Of course, there’s no rule that says you can only choose one type of pot, and a cluster of several different pots is an easy way to create a striking garden statement. Putting together a gorgeous grouping is a cinch if you follow some basic guidelines. Choose varied sizes of pots but link them with a common element, such as colours that work well together. Then fill with a mixture of tall and low plants to create visual interest.

Rural households often rely on rainwater for their domestic needs, but even urban dwellers can harvest this liquid asset for non-drinking purposes, such as irrigating the garden. If it gets used for things like flushing the loo as well, that can mean a substantial cut to your annual water bill. Plus, you’re saving a resource that would otherwise disappear down stormwater drains.

Starting points

Rainwater is collected from the roof via the gutter and downpipes to a tank. Then it gets pumped to outlets such as your garden taps and indoors to supply, say, your washing machine

and toilet. For collecting non-potable rainwater (water not fit as drinking water), most roofs other than unsealed asbestos are suitable. If you’re unsure what your roof is made of, consult a licensed builder.

Although the tank itself can be a DIY installation, there are important considerations such as where to position and direct the overflow pipe. You’ll need a licensed plumber to connect the pipework and to install a backflow device to prevent rainwater flowing into the public water system, as well as a licensed sparkie to deliver a power supply for a pump and auto-switching device, if required.

Your local water authority may also have to approve the installation, so

check all requirements with them first. And if you’re building from scratch or doing a ground-up renovation, it may actually be compulsory to include a rainwater tank in your plans. Check with your local authority.

T he size of it

Rainwater tanks come in a range of sizes, styles, colours and materials, from small, planter-style containers up to whoppers for commercial use. For existing homes, slimline tanks from around 1000-8500L, made from materials such as polyethylene or steel, can be tucked down the side of the house. They come in a range of standard colours to help you find one that works with your house scheme.

GREY MATTERS

Another way to eke out your usage is to use ‘grey water’, which has been through appliances such as washing machines (not toilets) on the garden. But you can’t use it everywhere, says Tim Wilson of Ames Australasia (suppliers of Nylex hoses). “Grey water is mostly used on lawns and grass. It’s not recommended to reuse the water for vegie areas or edible plants,” he says. Simply attach a grey water hose to your washing machine outlet and run it into a bucket or straight into the garden via a dispersion hose. “Grey water is not meant to be stored for longer than 24 hours, and should be spread out evenly so it does not pile in the same place,” warns Tim.

Council approval isn’t usually necessary for a tank of up to 10,000L, but as regulations differ and also affect things like positioning, consult your local council or planning authority before you make your choice.

The size of tank you’ll need depends on various factors including average rainfall for your area, what you plan to use the water for and how many people live at home. As a guide, a 3000-5000L tank should suit a four-person household with access to mains water and evenly spread rainfall, who want to use rainwater for flushing the loo, running the washing machine and watering a small garden.

Perfect placement

The aim is to have as much of your roof as possible available for rainwater catchment, so consider that when planning a location for your tank. This

will obviously also depend on the space available, plus local regulations.

Clever placement can also be more economical and convenient, says Mark Pearson from Clark Tanks. “The closer the tank is to your water source, the less money you will spend on plumbing and pipework from your roof to the tank inlet strainer,” he says.

Even a small tank can be very heavy when filled, so they need a solid base such as concrete, and should be secured so as not to blow over when empty. They also mustn’t be placed over public water or waste pipes – ask your supplier for advice.

Consider the necessities

Essentials include screens for your inlet and overflow pipes to prevent nasties like rodents and mozzies getting in, and a first flush diverter. “It allows the first flush of rainwater from your spouting to go straight to overflow until the downpipes and gutter are flushed of contaminants, and then the diverter shuts off to fill your tank,” explains Mark. A pump will almost certainly be required to drive the water to where it needs to go. These can be external or, as a quieter and space-saving choice, submerged within the tank.

After care

For ongoing maintenance, keep trees and leaves well away from your gutters, says Mark. “Ensure the inlet strainer is regularly cleaned out so water can flow freely through the stainless steel mesh of the strainer,” he adds. “Gutters should also be cleaned out regularly to maintain the quality of roof run-off into your water tank.” Fitting gutter guards will help fend off leaf litter, while downpipe covers are a must to keep out blockages.

Keep in mind…

n Where a public water supply is available, health authorities generally recommend using it for drinking and cooking, and restricting rainwater strictly to non-drinking uses such as garden irrigation, flushing the toilet and washing clothes.

n Any plumbing or hardwired electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie.

PAINT THE DOOR

Garage doors tend to take up a big percentage of a home’s facade, so it’s worth keeping them maintained – not just for looks, but to ensure they work smoothly and efficiently, too.

Get your metal roller or sectional door looking and working like new with a few simple repairs that can be done in one weekend, from a paint spruce-up and replacement of the weather seal along the bottom edge, to installing a smart door opener.

A fresh coat of quickdrying, self-priming paint with a level of gloss helps repel dirt. Apply on a dry, still day so debris doesn’t blow onto the wet surface while you’re working.

Tools & materials

1 Brush both sides of the door with a cobweb broom. Remove any rust, loose paint and dirt with a wire brush. Use a sanding sponge to clean along the grooves and to help the paint stick to the surface.

2 Clean with barbecue wipes to remove any remaining dust and stubborn spots. Set up a ladder to work along the higher parts of the door, wiping along the top, down the sides and over the back.

3 Place a drop sheet on the ground and mask around the handle, lock and down the sides with painter’s tape. To apply self-priming metal paint, first use a 50mm angled brush to cut in around the tape.

4 Drag a loaded 160mm roller along each groove, finishing the row by rolling back over the face. Work upwards from the base of the door and apply at least two coats, leaving to dry after each.

The hardworking piece of rubber along the base of a garage door eventually deteriorates, but can be replaced without too much fuss. Before buying a replacement weather seal, note the door brand, width and how the seal folds into the track. Also check you have the right drill bit for the screws that attach the side door guides to the wall.

Tools & materials

Safety equipment (gloves and eye protection)

Tape measure

Drill with 8mm (5/16") nut driver

Utility knife

Barbecue wipes

Silicone spray

1 Open the door fully and, on the side with the most space, use a drill with an appropriate bit to remove the screws holding the guide on the wall and move it away. Use a screwdriver to remove the plastic cartridge or stopper on the metal track that holds the seal. Tip: We needed an 8mm nut driver for these screws.

2 Wear gloves to slide the old weather seal along the metal track to remove it completely. Run a scraper into the recesses and along the base to remove all debris, then clean with a barbecue wipe. Tip: Change an automated door to manual via the switch or lever on the side before opening it by hand to remove the seal.

3 Lubricate the track by using the attached straw to spray silicone into the recesses. Feed the new seal into the two track recesses. Tip: Enlist another pair of hands to feed in the seal while you pull it along to help prevent it from slipping out while avoiding stretching the rubber.

4 Pull the seal through and trim with a short overhang on the ends to allow for shrinkage, then replace the cartridge or stopper. Push the door to fully open and reposition the guide on the door, reinstalling the screws in the existing wall holes. Tip: Use a sharp knife to avoid agitating the seal out of the track when cutting.

INSTALL A DOOR OPENER

Convert a manual-lift roller door into one that opens automatically via a smartphone but, before installing, check there is at least 95mm clearance from the side of the roller to the wall and a powerpoint. You’ll need an opener and connectivity kit, and two ladders. Make sure you also read the manufacturer’s safety recommendations. Follow these steps to install it yourself or visit the Service Desk‡ and arrange for Bunnings to do this for you.

Keep in mind…

n Garage doors attract creepy crawlies, so guard against them by wearing gloves and closed footwear.

n Always wear a mask and eye protection while wire-brushing, cleaning and sanding.

n Use the right ladder for the job, make sure it has non-slip feet and is set up on a flat, stable and solid surface. Maintain three points of contact (for example, both feet and one hand) on it and make sure another person is nearby. Never stand on the top rung.

n Don’t allow people or pets to walk under the open garage door while working on it.

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (gloves, ear and eye protection)

n Tape measure

n Small shifting spanner

n Drill with 8mm nut driver and 5.5mm bit

n 13mm socket

n Tie-down strap

n Two ladders

n Drop sheet

n Screwdriver

n Garage door opener and smart connectivity kit*

n Felt-tip pen

n 40mm timber offcut

1 Disable the locks and manually check the door opens smoothly. To begin installation, on the opposite side to where the opener will go, clip the supplied stop collar over the axle, against the drum, and tighten with a small shifting spanner.

2 To pin the door and prevent it from ballooning upwards when it moves, close it fully then lift by half a turn to secure supplied self-tapping metal screws into the ends, about 50mm in and through the drum behind, using a drill with an 8mm nut driver. Tip: Work from inside the garage on a stable ladder.

3 Knot the red rope through the cable loop at the side. Pull the cord to hear a click and check the legs turn freely. If your opener is on the left of the door, follow the instructions to change it from the factory-set right opening. Tip: After installation, adjust the rope to be 1800mm above the floor.

4 Open the door and secure a tie-down strap around the rolled drum. Position a ladder underneath with a folded drop sheet on top. Mark the position of the nuts before removing the U bolt from the wall bracket with a 13mm socket. Lift the axle to move the rolled drum onto the ladder and remove the bracket.

5 Slide the opener over the fork to straddle the spokes in the drum. Replace the wall bracket and lift the door back into position. Place the supplied clamp over the axle and through the bracket to tighten the screws over the marks with a 13mm socket. Remove the strap and ladder.

6 Measure halfway along the base of the door and use the weight bar as a template to drill holes with a 5.5mm bit, securing it with supplied bolts using a screwdriver and spanner. Add the warning labels, plug in the opener and follow instructions to set the door-opening limits, testing with a timber offcut.

7 To install connectivity kit sensors, position supplied mounting brackets inside either side of door, the same distance up from the floor, no higher than 100mm, and secure with appropriate screws. Check the eyes of the sensors face each other and the invisible beam between them is unobstructed.

8 Unplug the door opener before running sensor cables to the control panel using supplied self-adhesive cable mounts to hold them against the wall. Remove the access panel of the opener to connect the wires. Plug in the router and opener, then download the app to pair the door to your devices.

INDUSTRIAL GRID MIRROR

Could you do with a stylish mirror to bounce light around and add character to your home? Making your own windowpane-effect piece may be easier than you thought! We painted half-round dowel moulding and installed it over selfadhesive acrylic mirror tiles – no glass-cutting required. All you need is four packets of three 300mm mirror squares to cover a standard plywood sheet.

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (disposable gloves, mask and eye protection)

n Drop sheet

n Cloth

n Tape measure and pencil

n Mitre box with handsaw

n 1200mm x 896mm x 9mm plywood sheet•

n Twelve 300mm self-adhesive mirror squares

n Four 2.4m lengths 18mm x 6mm half round moulding•

n 180-grit abrasive paper with sanding block

n 2-in-1 spray paint and primer

n Construction adhesive with applicator

n Safety anchors

1 Set up your work bench and lay out a drop sheet in a well-ventilated area. Using a damp cloth, wipe over the face of a 1200mm x 896mm x 9mm plywood sheet to remove any dust, then position it flat.

2 Set out 300mm acrylic mirror squares to cover the plywood, removing the adhesive backing to press them into position, flush with the edges. Tip: Using acrylic mirror avoids having to work with glass and potential breakages. The protective blue coating on the mirror tiles will be removed later (see step 6).

3 On 18mm x 6mm half-round moulding, mark two 1204mm side frames and two 900mm end frames. Use a mitre box with a handsaw to cut the ends at 45°, ensuring they face inwards. Check the fit. Tip: The extra millimetres allow for the width of the saw blade so the frame is flush with the plywood edge.

4 Cut the internal pieces of moulding to cover the mirror joins, with two 1164mm pieces and nine lengths of 275mm. Tip: Check all measurements against the plywood before square-cutting the ends, as the sheeting size can vary slightly. Cut the long sides first – if you make a mistake they can be repurposed as shorter pieces.

5 Smooth all cuts using 180-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block to remove any breakout. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth and set the pieces out, flat side down. Shake the spray paint can well before applying three light coats in a sweeping motion, leaving to dry thoroughly after each.

6 Remove the protective coating from the mirror squares. Apply construction adhesive along the flat side of the moulding and press it into position, setting out the frame, followed by the internal pieces. Remove excess adhesive with a damp cloth, leaving to dry. Secure the mirror with safety anchors appropriate for your wall type.

REVIVED TIMBER TABLE

Transform an unloved old coffee table into a stylish centrepiece – all it takes is some patient sanding and a couple of coats of furniture oil.

DIY TOOLKIT

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (disposable gloves, mask, ear and eye protection)

n Drop sheet

n Orbital sander

n Palm sander

n Cloths

n Paint stirrer

n Preloved coffee table

n 80-, 120- and 180-grit abrasive discs

n 120-, 180- and 240-grit abrasive paper with sanding block

n Furniture oil

1 Place the table on a drop sheet. Using an orbital sander for larger areas and a palm sander for smaller sections, smooth the table all over with an 80-grit disc to remove the bulk of any varnish. Remove remaining varnish with 120-grit discs. Hand-sand with 120-grit paper to clean around the trim and into the corners, lightly rounding over the edges.

2 Smooth all over using sanders with 180-grit discs. Hand-sand with 180-grit abrasive paper around the trim, into the corners and along the edges to remove potential splinters

3 Using 240-grit abrasive paper with a hand-sanding block, continue to smooth all over, working in the direction of the wood grain for a silky finish, lightly rounding over the corners and edges. Wipe the entire table clean with a damp cloth to remove any dust.

4 Stir the furniture oil well, but avoid shaking the can (which may create bubbles). Wearing gloves, apply the oil with a cloth, working in the direction of the wood grain and leaving to dry overnight.

Tip: Turn the table upside down to work on the feet, legs and underside first, flipping it over to do the top last.

5 Lightly hand-sand all over with 240-grit abrasive paper, then wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Apply a second coat of oil with a clean cloth and leave to dry.

4 Check that the moulding fits as you cut each piece. Once you’re happy with the moulding, fix it in position using construction adhesive, pressing each piece down firmly. Remove the excess adhesive with a damp cloth and leave to dry.

5 Apply primer, using an angled brush to cut in over and around the moulding and a mini roller over the rest of the surface of the door. Tip: We used a new door. If you’re using an existing door, remove the handle and hinges prior to priming and painting.

6 Apply two coats of waterbased enamel using an angled brush to cut in over and around the moulding and a mini roller over the rest of the surface of the door, leaving to dry after each. Reinstall the hardware or remove the masking tape and then hang the door.

Tool-careessentials

Make the investment in quality tools and you’ll be smiling every time you use them. But don’t forget the crucial cleaning and upkeep that every good tool deserves!

Spotless record

Tools are safer when they’re cleaner – a dirty, oily tool can slip in your hand, warns Matt Francis at Irwin. “If a tool has grease or grime build-up on it, any standard spray degreaser will act as a good cleaner,” he says. Use a light scrubbing pad on any stubborn grime or surface rust. “As cleaning will also remove any lubrication, follow up with a light application of some type of rust protection like machine oil, WD-40 or RP7,” he adds.

It’s best to clean concrete and mortar off tools while it’s wet, but if you discover any cured spatters, don’t despair. Spray on a proprietary cement remover, let it soak in, then scrub it off.

Use a wire brush to get in between the teeth of files and rasps. If they don’t see frequent use, they may get a bit dusty hanging on a pegboard, so bundle them up in a tool roll (a bag made up of vertical pockets).

Case study

Many tools are sold with a carry case or cover designed to keep them clean and protected when not in use. “Cutting tools like chisels and plane blades need to be extremely sharp

to be safe and function well, and simply throwing them in a tool bag with other tools can lead to the cutting edge being dulled or even damaged,” says Matt. If you use them frequently, hang them on a pegboard; if not, keep them in a sturdy tool box.

Oil for one

Lubrication for tools with pivot points is just as essential as keeping cutting tools sharp. “Always maintain a light amount of grease on the moving parts of tools such as pliers or aviation snips,” says Matt. “Once they start

to bind or rub, apply a small amount of lithium grease as it sticks better to moving parts,” he says.

Cutting it fine

Keep chisels and hand-planes sharp with a whetstone and sharpening guide kit. However, most modern handsaws are machined with hardened steel teeth that are not suitable for sharpening, explains Bunnings tools buyer Dan Gibney. “It takes a lot of sawing to wear down that precisionmachined edge – once it becomes dull, it’s time to replace the tool,” he says.

A bit fiddly

It’s possible to sharpen drill bits using a drill-powered or standalone sharper, but this can be fiddly and complex – especially with spade or brad-point bits. Also, some specialised bits such as the Irwin Speedbor range are not designed to be sharpened.

Freshen up

Some cutting tools are designed with easily replaceable and inexpensive blades. Snap-off utility knives have about 10 cutting edges on each blade. Even their solid-blade counterparts

have double-ended blades. Coping saws and hacksaws can also wear down their teeth relatively quickly, so as with utility knives, it’s good to keep spare blades on hand.

Power struggle

Never attempt to DIY a damaged power tool cord – duct tape could be a lethal solution! Instead, contact the tool manufacturer to have the cord replaced by a qualified repairer. Ensure maximum longevity for the batteries of cordless tools by storing them in a relatively cool, dry space;

Some like it hot

Keep the flowers coming with these drought-tolerant gems

Pigface

A rambling succulent with fleshy leaves and masses of daisy-like blooms in shades of pink, purple, red, yellow or orange in spring and summer. Pigface prefers a spot in full sun and is tolerant of light frost. It is ideal for rockeries, retaining walls, hanging baskets or as a low-maintenance ground cover.

Kalanchoe

This small plant grows to only 30cm and is a great easy-care choice for pots or planted en masse in garden beds. The scalloped leaves are topped with clusters of bright pink, red, orange, yellow or white flowers for many months. It thrives in full sun in tropical, subtropical and warm, frost-free zones.

Jade plant

Clusters of star-shaped white and pink flowers nearly smother the bright green leaves of the jade plant from late autumn through winter. When not in bloom, the tree-like habit of this medium-sized succulent makes it a wonderful feature plant. While shade tolerant, it flowers best in full sun.

Aloe

A tough but beautiful group of succulents with an open rosette of pointed green or blue-green leaves. The foliage is lined with blunt spines, which give rise to spikes of red, orange, yellow or cream flowers. Aloe grows best in full sun and well-drained soil.

(Mesembyranthemum spp.)

This unfairly named beauty requires little attention. Prune in winter to promote spring growth.

Prefers a sandy, gritty soil in a warm spot. Pinch out shoots to increase bushiness and flowers.

(Crassula ovata)

This succulent favourite particularly loves bright, warm conditions. Only water when the soil is dry to touch.

(Aloe spp. and hybrids)

Grow in pots or as a landscape feature plant. Flowers appear in late winter or early spring.
