Remembrance Day observed around city Nanaimo remembers.

War veterans and the public will have numerous places to gather and give remembrance on Saturday, Nov. 11.

There are three Nanaimo-area Royal Canadian Legion branches that will be involved in the ceremonies and will open their doors.

Branch 10 Nanaimo, 129 Harewood Rd. The branch in Harewood will host people after the 11 a.m. ceremony at the Dallas Square Park cenotaph in downtown Nanaimo, said Bill Brayshaw, Branch 10 past-president.

“There will be sandwiches, I think there’s a pulled pork, clam chowder, assortment of meats, chili ... and then we have hot [toddies] for veterans that are in the parade,” said Brayshaw.

There will be live music and the public is welcome to attend, Brayshaw said.

War veterans and the public will be able to attend any of the three Royal Canadian Legion branches in Nanaimo for refreshments after the ceremony in downtown Nanaimo on Nov. 11.

Branch 256 Mount Benson, 1630 E. Wellington Rd. Corinne Stewart, Branch 256 secretary, said the Mount Benson legion will open in the morning for breakfast followed by other events.

“We’re having a ceremony in the hall here for

a lot of folks that can’t make it downtown and that will begin at 0900 hours and we have both a piper and bugler lined up ... plus we also do some laying of wreaths at that time too for folks that are not able to do it downtown.”

Keeping an eye on the coast Gord Buch served in the Royal Canadian Navy in the post-war years GREG SAKAKI NEWS BULLETIN

The longest coastline in the world will always need to be protected, in times of war or in times of peace.

Nanaimo’s Gord Buch, a petty officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, was entrusted with his share of that responsibility in the years immediately following the Second World War. Starting in 1946, Buch served five years in the navy and then five years with the navy reserves, working in the engine room branch on destroyers, an aircraft carrier, a minesweeper and a frigate.

As a teenager from the backwoods of Ontario, Buch found himself forced out of a job by men wreturning from war.

“So I said, ‘I’ll get even with them; I’ll take their job.’ So I joined the navy,” he said.

He trained at Naden at Esquimalt, then went to Halifax to train as an engineering mechanic and take on other roles working shore patrol and even cleaning toilets.

The first ship he served on was the HMCS Micmac destroyer, but only for about three months before it collided with the SS Yarmouth County. Five people on the Micmac were killed in the crash and another 15 were injured as the destroyer suffered significant damage to its bow.

A little while after that, Buch was transferred to Belfast, Northern Ireland, as construction was completed on the HMCS Magnificent aircraft carrier. Once it was finished, Buch took a boatload of photographers out to take

“They put me back in the engine room,” Buch said.

He would serve two years on the Magnificent, travelling from the Caribbean to the Arctic. Buch worked on air conditioning, refrigeration and steering systems on the carrier as it mostly served to provide pilot training.

“We were getting into the flying business and at that time, early ’48, we had more airplanes than the Canadian Air Force,” said Buch. “And we had one of the best aircraft around, much better than the Spitfire, which was called a Sea Fury.”

Plenty of the planes ended up in the sea back then.

“We had a catapult to help them shoot off the front and when they landed, you had a half-dozen

wires strung across and the airplane came down and had a hook on the back and caught the wire and stopped it right on the spot, because there wasn’t enough distance to slow them down on the ship,” Buch said. “And if they missed the wire when they were landing, they had a big wire barrier up and they’d crash into the barrier.”

The Maggie was accompanied by two destroyers, which deployed rescue boats when necessary.

“I’ve seen us go out with 27 airplanes and three months later we’d come back, we wouldn’t have one that could fly anymore, because we were training new pilots,” Buch said.

The Maggie also had some missions. It successfully located a crashed B29 in the Caribbean, though two other planes were lost in the search. Its trip up to the Canadian Arctic was to scout possible locations for radar bases.

After the Magnificent,

Buch worked as a Jeep driver at the Halifax base, at a naval radio station in Ottawa and served on the HMCS Portage minesweeper at Norfolk, Va. After his initial service was up, he worked for the English oil company Regent. It continued to pay workers during military service, so Buch spent a few months each year with the navy reserves, collecting two paycheques.

Because of his experience and training, he would usually be right back on a ship, whether it was the HMCS Buckingham frigate, the Portage again, or the HMCS Nootka destroyer.

Buch worked in the oil refinery business until the mid-1980s, when he heard about affordable homes in Nanaimo, came to have a look, and crossed paths with Frank Ney himself. Buch has been in the Harbour City ever since, now a resident at Nanaimo Seniors Village and a longtime volunteer at the Vancouver Island Military Museum. He was a board member at the museum for years and is now a docent, happy to show visitors around.

“We tell salty tales – some of them are even true,” he laughed.

As another Remembrance Day approaches, Buch hopes people keep in mind how the navy has kept watch over Canada’s waters.

“If you didn’t have any military, you don’t have any say in what’s going on internationally in the world,” he said. “So you have to have some kind of military and you have to have a naval presence to patrol … the largest coastline in the world.”

Continued from B4 The plan went sideways when the commando unit tasked to land at Dieppe’s harbour entrance encountered and were attacked by a German naval patrol. With the element of surprise lost, German defenders were prepared and prevented the Canadians from taking out the harbour defences and supporting the Royal Marines objective.

“From what I can see it is by far the most extensive examination of Dieppe yet to appear,” O’Keefe said of his work, in correspondence with the News Bulletin. “Due mostly to good timing (releases of information) and new technologies (digital camera, the internet, etc.,) that allow the historian to go deeper than ever before with breadth and scope never imagined. We are definitely on the cusp of a revolution in historical investigation, interpretation and understanding.”

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, of 4,963 Canadians who took part in the operation, just 2,210 returned to England – many of those were wounded – and 916 Canadians died.

The idea for the V.I. Military Museum’s exhibit came up when Tracy Duggan of Nanaimo brought her father’s military service medals, including the Dieppe Bar, into the museum.

“It was very serendipitous,” said Duggan, who went to buy a plaque on the museum’s Veterans Wall of Honour for her father Walter Duggan who was at Dieppe.

“He was just an infantryman, so he was on one of the landing vessels that actually went on shore and they actually had to try and storm the beach,” Duggan said.

Walter Duggan was at Blue Beach, the landing point which saw the highest number of casualties, and was cited for his bravery under heavy fire that involved two attempts to get a mortar into action against the German defenders and carrying a wounded comrade to safety.

Prior to O’Keefe’s work, many of the survivors of Dieppe died without ever knowing why they were sent into that mission or why nearly 1,000 of their friends died there.

“Why we did our exhibit was to tell the families of all those people who fought and died there, there was a reason for the guys going there,” McFadden said. “Unfortunately they’ve laboured under the misapprehension all these years that their lives were just thrown away, that there was not a real purpose for the raid. Vancouver Island Military Museum’s continues to add more exhibits, which now include an intact, never worn German Luftwaffe officer’s uniform. The uniform was donated by the former pilot’s family.

The museum has placed on display a Luftwaffe pilot’s uniform that was never actually worn by its owner.

The uniform was donated by the family of Staffelkapitän Eberhard Schnoor von Carolsfeld.

Schnoor von Carolsfeld was piloting a Heinkel HE 111 twin-engine bomber in April 1940 by fighter aircraft from the Royal Navy aircraft carrier Ark Royal that was escorting a convoy of merchant ships to Murmansk, Russia.

two others of the crew survived the crash landing, were picked up at sea and spent the rest of the war as prisoners of war. Schnoor von Carolsfeld was first imprisoned in England before he was moved to Canada.

“He was promoted while he was in prison and was issued a new uniform,” said Brian McFadden, Vancouver Island Military Museum vice-president.

To Giselle Roeder and Afiena Kamminga, war is not something that happens on a far-off battlefield. To them, war happens at home.

Roeder grew up in Germany during the Nazi regime and subsequent Soviet occupation, while Kamminga was born in the Netherlands as the war was coming to an end.

In observance of Remembrance Day, the pair of local writers will be reading from books they have written about civilian life during the Second World War. Roeder’s book, 2014’s We Don’t Talk About That, is a memoir recalling her life in Nazi Germany before fleeing to West Germany and eventually Canada.

Kamminga was too young to remember the Nazi occupation.

Her new book, The Storks Came Back, is fiction but has a basis in the wartime recollections of her husband, who grew up in Denmark in the 1940s. She said both books complement each other as they view the war from different angles.

“The Second World War has so many aspects and here in Canada it’s often, of course, seen as something overseas but in our background it’s right on your doorstep,” she said.

Both writers describe the experiences of those displaced by war, in Roeder’s case from a first-person perspective as incoming soldiers evicted her family from their home. Kamminga said her husband described the confusion of seeing both Nazi soldiers and

“You can really see that we are all people and we’re all caught in it,” Kamminga said.

“Because even the Danes, who really, really didn’t like Germans very much, they ended up feeling so sorry for these people coming from Germany.”

The authors said that the stories they tell in their books are still relevant more than 70 years later.

Roeder said she sees similarities between the rise of Adolf Hitler and contemporary belligerent heads of state.

“It is very scary because when you follow Hitler’s development and Hitler’s rise, it’s the very same thing. It’s just happening all over and people are blind. They don’t see it because they haven’t lived through the time,” she said.
