LCOMS Quiz Bowl Super Stars by Adalee Vaughan The LCO Quiz Bowl team is back for another season of trivia questions and exciting games. So what exactly is Quiz Bowl and who represents LCOMS on the team? Quiz bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. The teams are comprised of students who excel in these categories. The teams are comprised of students who sit on a panel – the group of four who will be competing at the event. Alternates can be substituted in between the rounds. There are three rounds. The first and third are lightning rounds and the second is a category round. Some of the questions asked are: What blacksmith was known for his famous midnight ride? How did Dracula allegedly die? Who wrote “The Raven” To answer these questions, contestants ring a buzzer and answer; the more questions a team answers, the more points received. At the end of the match, a winner is declared. Schools compete against one another in a bracket to determine who will be the bowl champion. To be a part of the LCOMS team, sixth through eighth grade students were invited to take a special quiz to guarantee a spot on the team. This year’s team is comprised of the following students: Tyler Durbin, grade 6 Alex Friedlander, grade 6 Wade Cheramie, grade 7

Evan Louviere, grade 7 Adalee Vaughan, grade 7 Ailiyah Daniels, grade 8 Alyssa Dufrene, grade 8 Bailey Durbin, grade 8 Lennon Gisclair, grade 8 Ms. Cheramie, 8th grade ELA teacher, is the Quiz Bowl coach, with Bailey Durbin standing as team captain. Ms. Cheramie used to coach the Lockport Quiz Bowl team prior to becoming a Bulldog. “I really want to win against Lockport this year since that’s my old stomping grounds. We have a great group of Bulldogs on our Quiz Bowl team, so I think they can do this,” she said. On September 18, the LCOMS Quiz Bowl team faced off in their first match against Morgan City Junior High with a final score of 76-34; this guaranteed LCOMS’s win and match against Lockport. The match against Lockport is planned to take place on Tuesday, October 16 barring any changes.

Want to test your knowledge to see if you can hang with LCOMS’s Quiz Bowl ennead (group of nine)? Try your hand at answering the following trivia question: What three famous historical figures wrote The Federalist Papers?

4

Write the answer on a slip of paper, along with your name and homeroom teacher’s name, and put it in Mrs. Coleman’s door file / box (room 201) for a chance to win a prize. Entries must be received by October 12th. If more than one answer is correct, a winner will be drawn at random.

by Ava Cheramie and Mrs. Coleman What’s your super power? Is it the ability to fly? Can you travel through time? Are you a Zealous Flamingo Mingler?  Wait…what? October 31st is soon approaching, and children and adults alike will don festive duds to escape the reality of day to day doldrums in order to be transported into a fantastical world of super heroes, living legends, and beasts that roamed the planet millions of years ago… oh, and to get candy, too. We can’t forget the candy. So what are this year’s hottest costumes? What can you expect to see lurking in the shadows of the night? Super heroes, of course! Whether you’re going for the good guy gear or the villain behind the mask, super heroes are the number one hit this season. Some of the top costumes, according to the Chicago Tribune, will include Black Panther, Okoye, Ant-man, Deadpool, Wonder Woman, Avengers, Incredibles, and Thanos. Following the super hero / villain rank, will be inflatable

dinosaurs. Up next will be sharks and Fortnite characters. If you just can’t decide, you can always pair up with a friend and go as the beloved painter Bob Ross and his artwork… now he was a true super hero.

In this PG rated movie, 10-year-old Lewis Barnavelt is sent to Michigan to live with his Uncle Jonathan. He discovers his uncle is a warlock and enters a world of magic and sorcery.

Lewis soon learns that this power is not limited to good people; he also learns of Isaac Izard, an evil wizard who wanted to cause the Apocalypse so that he could see what happened af-

terwards. To do this, he constructed a magical clock using black magic; as long as the clock exists it will keep ticking, counting down to doomsday. The evil wizard died before he could finish the clock, but he hid it in his house, now the home of Uncle Jonathan and Lewis. Lewis and Jonathan must find the clock before it's too late!

Did You Know? Each month is host to certain holidays and days of recognition - including some pretty bizarre ones. Check out some of the ones listed below so next time someone says, “Did you know...” You can say, “Yeah! Did YOU know...” by Yoselin Arevalo

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, International School Library Month, National Book Fair Month, and National Pizza Month. A fun fact about October is that more US Presidents have been born in this month than any other month. According to folklore, if deer have a gray coat in this month you should expect a hard winter. October was the eighth month in the old Roman calendar. October got its name from the Latin word ‘Octo’ that means eight. In the Southern hemisphere, October is the seasonal equivalent to April. Mind Blown Fact: October ends on the same day of the week as February every year. Sweet Fact: More candy is sold on October 28th than on any other day of the year.

This Choir’s on Fire by Mackensie Vaughan

The Larose Cut Off Middle School choir is on fire, and its comprised of students who sing, perform, and thrill audiences with their voices several times each year. LCO’s got talent! Choir accepts sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who have singing skills (and just because you can sing Adele in the shower… doesn’t necessarily qualify as skills). The program has auditions, performances, and tests. The accepted students learn how to read music and also to sing songs in other languages. There are approximately 25 students in the LCOMS choir. Currently there are three main groups. There are altos, sopranos, and also tenors. There are about two

tenors, about ten altos, and about 15 sopranos.

Director Bienvenue said, “Choir gives someone a chance to find their place. It doesn’t matter who you are. It gives people a place to belong.” The first performance will be held on Veterans Day in the LCOMS gym. Some of the songs will include: “The Star Spangled Banner,” and also, “My America.” Numerous performances will be held throughout the year including December 13th, February 26th, March 21st, March 22nd, and May 2nd. If you are in the 600 building during seventh period and hear an angelic sound, don’t worry – your phone isn’t going off; it’s the choir rehearsing for their first big performance!

Go PINK in October by Bella Bourgeois Have you ever wondered why so many people sport the color pink in October? If you noticed at our recent pep rally, the LCOMS cheerleaders and dance team used pink pom-poms. Many professional sports teams also use gear and uniforms that have some sort of pink implemented into the design during the month of October. So why is everyone going gaga over pink? Pink is the color associated with breast cancer awareness month, and October is the month when major breast cancer charities organize events to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds to research for a cure. In 1991, the Susan G. Komen

10

foundation, the largest and most well-known breast cancer charitable organization, had a charity run at its New York affiliate. Pink ribbons were given to all breast cancer survivors and participants. Since then, pink has become the signature color for all breast cancer related events. Did you know that all genders can get breast cancer? Yes, it is true both women and men can develop breast cancer. Breast cancer statistics: In the US, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Every 19 seconds, someone in the world is diagnosed with breast cancer. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.

WANT TO up your ghoul game? by Hunter Doucet Dead by Daylight Dead by Daylight (DBD) is a horror game made by Behaviour Interactive Inc. Dead by Daylight was one of the most popular games of 2016. 94% of the people that bought the game loved the game. What It’s About DBD is a game with four “survivors” and one “killer.” The killer’s role in the game is essentially to get all four of the survivors onto a hook to sacrifice them to “The Entity.” The survivor’s goal is to get out of the compound before the killer finds them. They have to activate four generators that are inside of the map. After the survivors activate the generators they have to go through the exit gate. At a certain point into the round if any of the survivors are still alive, they receive

a hatch key. The hatch key gives you access to a hidden exit somewhere in the map. Killers and Survivors There are currently thirteen killers and 14 survivors in the game with their own traits and abilities. A few examples of the killers are “The Huntress,” “Michael Myers,” and “The Spirit.” Some examples of the survivors are “Adam Francis,” “David Tapp,” and “Claudette Morel.”
