Upcoming Movies for December 2018! ──── Spider Man: Into the Spider Universe Rated: PG ────

December

MOVIES OF THE MONTH

Mary Poppins Returns Rated: PG

DECEMBER IS ACTION PACKED With so many good movies coming out this December, we couldn’t decide on just one to showcase; so we decided to do review a few. The much anticipated Spider Man: Into the Spider Universe featuring Miles Morales, your typical teenaged boy who just so happens to get transformed into the one and only Spider Man, will be hitting theatres on Friday, December 14. It’ll be airing at our local theatre in Houma on that date as well. Whether you’ve read the book or not, you’ll be in for a treat as we watch Miles harness his new skills to battle the villanous Kingpin. Next up is The Return of Mary Poppins, set to release on Friday, December 21. Already racking up nominations for best performance, best motion picture, and best original score (music), this updated version of an old classic is sure to bring joy to all ages. Mary Poppins returns to London to visit Jane and her brother Michael, now a father of three, to

8

help them rediscover the joy they once knew as children. No one can forget about the much anticipated Aquaman. With the dreamy Jason Momoa playing lead, fans will not want to tear their eyes off the screen as Aquaman finds himself caught between the surface world that ravages the sea, and the underwater Atlanteans who are ready to revolt. Can he bring peace before it’s too late? You’ll have to wait until it’s released on Friday, December 21 to find out! While Bumblebee and a few others are set to be released this month, don’t forget about a Christmas classic before it leaves theatres. Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, rated PG, is now playing at the Houma movie theatre and will be there through December 19, according to their website. So if you want to get into that Christmas spirit or to build a bond with another grumpy old soul, make sure you plan to view it before it leaves the theatres.

National Days for Hot Cocoa & Gingerbread Houses by Ava Cheramie, BMC member

December is that cold time of year perfect for serving that warm, delicious, and chocolatey beverage known as hot cocoa. On December 13 there’s even a national day of celebration called Hot Cocoa Day to celebrate the warm holiday treat enjoyed by so many this time of the year. Hot cocoa has been around for many years. It is believed to have first come from ancient people of Mesoamerica living in jungles around 2500-3000 years ago. The United States department of agriculture says, “Cocoa powder is a good source of fiber and iron. Dark chocolate contains calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin A and vitamin K.” This shows how hot cocoa has some health benefits as well. Another big draw in December is for families to spend time with one another creating gingerbread houses. Just a day before Hot Cocoa Day is National Gingerbread House Day, on December 12. It celebrates the fun but challenging art and craft. Sculpting gingerbread houses is a craft that has been around for thousands of years.

It is believed to have originated in Europe at the end of the 11th century. Not only can you have fun creating complexes out of the stuff, gingerbread is also a good treat! Did you know the ginger in the gingerbread houses can help you from getting sick? Ginger helps with nausea, as a result of motion sickness, chemotherapy, and pregnancy. According to one ginger enthusiast, Karen Belz, “People use ginger then like they do now – medicinally. Ever wonder why you were told to drink ginger ale when you were nauseous? It’s because the ginger has calming qualities.” Hot cocoa and gingerbread houses are important parts of the Christmas holidays; they both can bring families together. That’s just what the holidays are all about – family. Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, remember this December to build your gingerbread houses and enjoy some soothing, delicious hot cocoa. LCO students, submit your gingerbread house creations (by photo) to the Bulldog Media Club for a chance to win a prize in January! Email photo entries to lcoleman@mylpsd.com. Please include your name and homeroom teacher’s name.

Not your average reindeer games! by Hunter Doucet, BMC Member

Super Smash Bros. Super Smash Bros is a crossover fighter game with characters from different games published by Nintendo. The goal of “Smash” as the Nintendo fanbase calls it is to knock players off of the “stage” or playing area. The first Super Smash Bros was released in 1999 and originally was only available in Japan because of low budget, but it was largely successful and was later available worldwide. The original Smash had only twelve characters which didn’t give the player a very wide selection of fighters to choose from. Super Smash Bros Melee, the second game in the franchise, was released on November 21, 2001 for the game cube. A few of the game’s new characters include Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach Link, and Ganondorf. These new characters gave the fanbase more to work with and resulted in much more success. Later, in 2008 the third game of the franchise, Super Smash Bros Brawl, was released. It was available on the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS consoles. Smash Brawl was the first Nintendo title that was available on a handheld console. Some of the new characters in this release are Wario, Meta Knight, Lucario, and Solid Snake, to name a few. At this point Nintendo was close to peak success rates when this game was released. In 2014 Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U was released. This title is better known to most people as just Smash 4. This release had a total of 55 characters. This was the largest amount of playable characters in the Smash franchise yet. A few of the new characters for this game include Greninja, Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Smash 4 was a game that the community was generally happy with, but they wanted more. This month, they’ve gotten it.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate The Nintendo community has been waiting for this game since March 7, when the first trailer for it came out during an E3 live stream. Since then, more and more information has been shown by the developers of Smash Ultimate. There is a total of 68 playable characters including Inkling, Ridley, King K. Rool, and the Breath of the Wild versions of Link and Zelda in the roster. There are 104 different stages in which to play. Some of them include The Great Plateau Tower, Dracula’s Castle, Moray Tower’s, and New Donk City Hall. So, I hope you all grabbed a copy of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch when it was released on December 7, otherwise - you might want to add it to your Christmas list. It won’t disappoint.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O'Hanlon 115 West Ninety Fifth Street ___________________________ Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

"Is There a Santa Claus?" reprinted from the September 21, 1897, number of The New York Sun.

“If we experienced life through the eyes of a child, everything would be magical and extraordinary. Let our curiosity, adventure, and wonder of life never end.” ~Akiane Kramarik
