The Betty Hess Bristol Endowed Scholarship in Nursing

The Betty Hess Bristol Endowed Scholarship in Nursing was established by Colonel Matt C.C. Bristol III and his wife Nary Lou of North Chesterfield, Virginia in memory of Colonel Bristol’s wife, Betty and her life as a nurse and missionary.

Betty was born in St Petersburg, Florida on 9 June 1946. She was raised with her brother Jim in a Christian home where material resources were very scarce. She came to saving faith as a young girl, and sensed God’s call to be a missionary nurse. Betty came to Baylor in the Fall of 1964. She became a member of what was then Delta Alpha Pi sorority and met a young Baylor junior named Matt Bristol at a pledge dance. Betty and Matt were married May 30, 1967, while both were still in school.

During her husband’s Air Force career, Betty worked as a nurse in both the US and Europe. She received a master’s degree in Community Health Nursing from Catholic University in 1978. After Matt’s retirement in 1990, she served with the US Department of Veterans Affairs, first doing home health care and then in charge of the VA’s worldwide health care budget. Her long-deferred response to God’s call to missions finally ended when she was commissioned in 1998 with Matt by the International Mission Board to serve in former Soviet Central Asia. She learned the local language and set up her own medical clinic in a remote city not far from the Chinese border. She led medical mission teams to unreached villages where churches were later planted. God used her to perform several miracles.

She often went without food for days at a time as she responded to the needs of hundreds of patients, but she never complained. After six years, her health situation required her t return to Richmond, Virginia. For four years she battled aggressive sarcoma and was promoted to glory on 25 January 2012. Several weeks before she passed, she and Matt made a video to encourage fellow believers. It is on YouTube under Faith, Hope, and Cancer, Betty Bristol. Betty and Matt had two children and five grandchildren. Her spiritual legacy includes thousands on three continent whom her life and work touched.

Ethel Kern Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Ethel Kern Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 through the estate of Ethel Kern by her nephew, Robert E. Herriott.

Ethel Mae Kern was born in 1894 in Linden, New Jersey and her family moved to Dallas, Texas when she was young. She graduated from the Baylor School of Nursing in 1916.

Ms. Kern volunteered for the Nursing Corps during World War I and after being stationed in Boston, she contracted influenza which made the trip overseas impossible. Ms. Kern worked as a hospital nurse in Dallas, Texas, for most of her life and also later as a private duty nurse until she retired at the age of eighty-one. After retiring, Ms. Kern moved to the Boston area to live with her sister and to be near her sister’s children.

Robert E. Herriott had great love and respect for his Aunt Ethel and what she meant to so many during her life. It is because of this admiration and reverence that Mr. Herriott made a provision in his estate to enhance the endowed scholarship fund named in honor of his aunt. Janice Carolyn Cravens Lakin Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing

“Strength”, “determination”, and “will” are words that shall forever define this beautiful lady, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

The Janice Carolyn Cravens Lakin Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing was established in 2022 by her high school sweetheart and husband of 58 years Phil Lakin, Sr. and her two children Phil Lakin, Jr. (BBA ’89, MBA ‘99) and Dr. Tracey Lakin (BA ‘94) all of Tulsa, Oklahoma to forever benefit students of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Jan was so proud to be a Texan, having been born in Dallas on July 10, 1940. Her father was a career Army officer, and as a proud “Army brat,” she lived in several locations in the US and Germany. She graduated from Wurzburg American High School in Germany in 1958, from The Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia in 1961, where she earned her nursing diploma, and from the University of Tulsa in 1981, where she earned her BS in nursing with honors. She also attended Centenary College, where she pursued an MBA.

Jan loved running, sports, gardening, animals and birds, fishing, traveling, the ocean, mountains, and lakes. Her love of her family and friends was steadfast especially for her kids whom she vigorously defended in all things and constantly encouraged to set goals, achieve dreams, and put others interests before their own. She also dearly loved her dogs mostly Yorkshire Terriers that she had throughout her life.

While battling multiple myeloma, Jan was among the pioneers to undergo a stem cell transplant as a potential cure, the cells were donated by her brother, Jim, who through one of God’s many miracles was a perfect match. This stem cell transplant, and the excellent care that she received from her doctors and nurses is what she believed led to her 22 years of life after her original diagnosis.

Jan loved nursing and knew the importance nurses play in shaping positive outcomes for their patients. It was her hope that this scholarship would inspire people to deeply learn their skills so they could provide the very best care and deeply absorb their faith, so they could share it with their patients, directly and indirectly, through the counsel and support that patients require during their times of greatest need.

William (Bill) and Marjory Leslie Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing

The William (Bill) and Marjory Leslie Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing was established in 2005 by John L. and Marjorie Marilyn Leslie Bedwell of Norman, Oklahoma, in memory of Marilyn Bedwell’s parents, William (Bill) and Marjory Leslie.

Through this scholarship fund, John L. and Marilyn Leslie Bedwell perpetuate the memory of a parent’s desire that their only daughter, Marilyn, be given the opportunity to live her childhood dream of attending Baylor University to become a nurse and their dedication to financial sacrifice for the fulfillment of this dream. The fulfillment of this dream only came about after Bill, Marjory and Marilyn unexpectedly met a man on Baylor’s campus who changed their lives. Because of financial reasons, Marilyn was not going to be able to attend Baylor University to study nursing; so, on the family’s way to Galveston, Texas, during the summer of 1957 to visit the University of Texas School of Nursing, the family stopped in Waco to tour Baylor’s campus. While in Pat Neff Hall, they happened to meet and have a short visit with an older, mild-mannered, white-haired, neatly dressed gentleman, who they did not know, but quickly learned this man was Dr. W. R. White, who was then president of Baylor University. So, impressed during this short visit with Dr. White’s friendliness, humility and his ardent fervor concerning Baylor’s mission and commitment to its students to provide an education founded on Christian principals, the Leslie family aborted their planned trip to Galveston and upon returning home, Bill “cashed in” his company’s retirement plan so that Marilyn could attend Baylor University and experience her dreams.

Marilyn Leslie Bedwell received the B.S.N. degree from Baylor University in 1961. She is a lifetime member of the Baylor Alumni Association. She also received an M.S.N. degree from the University of Colorado in 1970 and a M.S. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1995. Her husband, John, holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from the University of Oklahoma and a Ph.D. degree in geophysical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. Kenneth Wayne Pittman Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing

The Kenneth Wayne Pittman Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing was established in 2005 by William Paul and Karen Lee McDonald of Flower Mound, Texas, in loving memory of Kenneth Wayne Pittman.

This endowed scholarship fund was established to honor and perpetuate Kenneth’s lifelong devotion to helping others while providing financial assistance to Baylor nursing students who find themselves in need of such assistance in order to complete their required studies.

While serving in the Armed Forces as a young, single man in his twenties, Kenneth afforded the opportunity for his sister, Anita Ruth Pittman, to realize her desire to become a nurse, during her three years of required studies at Hillcrest Hospital School of Nursing in Waco, Texas. Hillcrest Hospital School of Nursing became known as Baylor University School of Nursing, Hillcrest Unit. Anita Ruth graduated as a Registered Nurse, September 15, 1952, in Waco, Texas, as a member of the first graduating class of Baylor University’s School of Nursing. She faithfully served her calling as a nurse for 40 years.

Kenneth Wayne Pittman’s life was dedicated to loving and helping others. He often said, “If you make a difference in just one person’s life every day, either with a smile or encouraging word, then you have been a great success that day.” Kenneth lived a lifetime of success.

It is our hope and prayer that all recipients of The Kenneth Wayne Pittman Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing would be forever mindful of the power and privilege of investing in another person’s life.

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Philipp Rossbach earned his B.B.A. and M. Acc. degrees from Baylor University in 2005. Kimberly Rossbach earned the B.S.F.C.S. degree from Baylor University in 2006. They were married in Gilmer, Texas in July 2010.

The Rossbachs established this endowed scholarship in D.A. “Don” Weckwerth’s memory because Don always had a passion for the Baylor nursing program, especially the FastBacc® program, because it gave students that often have been in the workforce already the opportunity to go back to class and follow their calling. Don always had admired the courage of FastBacc students when they changed their career paths.

Donald Albert Weckwerth was born on October 4, 1922, in Glencoe, Minnesota. He was the son of Henry A. Weckwerth and Marie Dorothy Wilding Weckwerth. In his teens, both parents died, and Don lived with his sister, Laverne, until he joined the Army in 1942. Despite his youth and inexperience, his superior abilities in mathematics and organization were quickly recognized and he served as a supply officer for the historic 1264th Engineer Combat Battalion, Company B. Following World War II, Don attended the University of Oklahoma and the University of Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. After a lengthy career in banking, Don retired to pursue personal investments and other interests. For many years, Don hosted International high school students and formed lasting relationships with them and their families. One of Don’s foreign exchanges students, Philipp Rossbach, returned to the United States and with a scholarship funded by Don, attended Baylor University, and has become a successful certified public accountant in Dallas. As a counselor for S.C.O.R.E., Don taught prospective entrepreneurs how to start and succeed in business. Dr. Ed and Nola Stewart and Mrs. Donna Stewart Phillips Endowed Scholarship Fund a Hord Challenge Scholarship

The Dr. Ed and Nola Stewart and Mrs. Donna Stewart Phillips Endowed Scholarship Fund, a Hord Challenge Scholarship was established in 2021 by Donna Stewart Phillips.

He pastored six churches and was a leader in the Texas Baptist denomination including being a trustee of two Texas Baptist Universities. He held leadership roles with the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Baptist Home Missions Board, and the Foreign Missions Board. His most memorable mission work took him to Anchorage, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia.

Dr. And Mrs. Stewart loved Baylor University! After retiring from the pastorate, Dr. Stewart was a Development Consultant for Baylor, in this role he visited churches in the Central Texas area to tell them the “Baylor Story.”

If Dr. Stewart’s ministry could be summarized in one verse it would be a passage from John 10:10 that says, “I come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Dr. Stewart not only preached how to live an abundant life, but he demonstrated it to others.

Dr. and Mrs. Stewart had a strong belief in the importance of higher education and encouraged their children to attend college. Even though they lived on a minister’s salary, they sent all four children to college. Three are Baylor graduates and all four earned an advanced degree.

Donna wanted to sponsor a Baylor scholarship in her parent’s honor due to their love of Baylor and higher education. When she heard about the need for scholarships for nursing students, she was quick to respond. Her parents would be thrilled to know that they continue to support higher education at Baylor University and more specifically that they are enabling Nursing students to achieve their dreams of a Baylor education and a lifetime of service to others.
