RAINIER PRESERVED
PROJECT: Graduate Academic, ARCHITECTURE STUDIO DATE: Autumn 2022 LOCATION: Rainier Beach, WA INSTRUCTOR: Dawn Bushnaq SOFTWARE: Revit, Rhino, Enscape
INTRODUCTION Rainier Preserved is a mixed-use building located in the center of Seattle’s Rainier Beach neighborhood at the southeast corner of the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Henderson Street. The central Rainier Beach area has a mix of residential and commercial buildings as well as multiple schools, churches, libraries, and a community center that are vital elements of social infrastructure. The community thrives on stimulating a lively neighborhood by creating and providing activities and events, such as local farmer markets and community clubs where people can interact and participate. Thus, an essential and meaningful intervention would significantly ignite and support the community to grow substantially and become a more sustainable neighborhood in upcoming future. The new mixed-use Rainier Preserved provides affordable housing and retails and commercial space at the ground floor, encouraging business and engaging the community.

SHEAR WALLS AS THE LATERAL BRACING TYPE
The main goal of the design intervention is to establish a landmark on the site. Thus, the design must stand out and distinguish from other rectangular and square shapes. Organic and curvy forms create flow, circulation, and attractiveness through the structure. The ground floor is mainly commercial and retails, which are concrete post-tension structure. The post-tension creates a long span with fewer columns, which helps to maximize and organize better. The upper levels are CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) structure system, which does not require structural complexity, yet is straightforward and affordable to construct. As shown from the model, shear walls are the main component that takes all the lateral force, which gets along well with housing units and division. Moreover, shear walls form a simple structure, yet functional as well.

RAINIER FOOD HARMONY Food Bank x Greenhouse
PROJECT: Graduate Academic, ARCHITECTURE STUDIO DATE: WINTER 2023 LOCATION: Rainier Beach, WA INSTRUCTOR: Rob Corser SOFTWARE: Revit, Rhino, Enscape
INTRODUCTION Public libraries are one of the most important institutions in American society today. While libraries have existed as repositories of knowledge since ancient times, the institution of a free public library is a unique aspect of our community. With social and technological changes, libraries have been adapting to provide services beyond books and information. Among their expanding roles, many libraries today are vital sources of temporary shelter and community services for the unhoused and others in need. Since the great depression, food banks and food pantries have also become vital charitable institutions in our cities, serving those who lack access to affordable nutrition. This project envisions a hybrid typology combining the educational and support services of a public library branch and the community nutrition assistance of a food bank. Provisionally called a “Food Library,” this new typology is intended to provide direct access to food, education, resources, and assistance in food literacy, gardening, and community nutritional resilience.

BOULDER CAFE BRIDGE Architecture Project
INTRODUCTION The main idea of this design is to create a gathering space for people to enjoy the environment around the Boulder Creek. However, it is specially built for most CU students to hang out with friends and do school works. In fact, the design is located close to the east campus which would become a decent place for graduate students to come and relax. Moreover, the bridge serves two purposes. One is to function as a typical bridge. Two is to establish a small landmark for what people desire. The Boulder Creek path is about 5.5 miles long and runs through Boulder Canyon on the west end and Stazio Ballfields on the east end. The trail is maintained jointly by the Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Works Department's Greenways Program.

LOBBY LIGHTING DESIGN Lighting Design & Analysis
INTRODUCTION The designed locations are a lobby and a residential corridor. The goal is to create a warm, modern, and luxurious sensation to welcome residents. The lobby has lighting components that attract and pull people to stay. Light fixtures could also highlight furniture, art, pathways, and ceilings. Luminaries should be minimal but essential and highlight architectural elements.
LUMINAIRE TYPE Wall Grazing Light Wall washing will be the major lighting throughout the building. The LED light strip will provide wall washing on the curve area. Wall washer track lighting will also be used on the straight ceiling line. Spotlight
Secondary lighting is spotlight where provide highlights and rhythm for each specific location and where art, scupitures, and furniture that need to be standout. Downlight Downlights will be installed along paths and corridors to support areas requiring more light and brightness. In other words, the downlight will act as tertiary.

The Chair Furniture Studio Project
PROJECT: Graduate Academic, FURNITURE STUDIO DATE: Spring 2023 INSTRUCTOR: Erling Christofferson | Kimo Griggs | Steve Withycombe SOFTWARE: Rhino, Modeling, Craft
INTRODUCTION Through my work at the furniture design studio, I have gained invaluable experience in the intricacies of design and the art of craftsmanship. This knowledge has been instrumental in helping me create an exquisite chair that embodies the essence of Scandinavian design. The chair boasts a unique carving that adds to its aesthetic appeal and enhances its comfort and functionality. Its sleek and modern design is sure to make it a standout piece in any space.

SKETCH & PROCESS
35
Making furniture needs dedication, precision, and eagerness to create. All design disciplines can learn from each other. Understanding how things work together is crucial. Every design matters if we can give it function and meaning. I learned valuable lessons at a furniture design studio, improving my architectural skills. I spent ten weeks creating a chair, with tasks including design, material selection, and understanding Scandinavian design history. The chair's structural parts were made from light-colored ash wood. The back and feet parts were cut straight from solid ash wood. The armrest and supporting parts were cut into thin layers, bent, and formed into a curved shape using veneering. Each part took a day in a vacuum bag to prepare for trimming and sanding. The same veneering procedure was also used to create the seat and backrest. However, the material was from a manufacturer that had already made thin pre-cut layer ash wood veneers. Due to the pre-cut layer, the width needed to be joined to have a broader seat and backrest. After finishing all the parts, every single part was joined by many dowels and glued together. The final process was sanding and ensuring no sharp edges on chair angles. The overall chair was perfect and very comfortable to sit on. The height and angle of the chair are ideal for a lounge chair that creates an aesthetic for the room or space. 36
