LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

we’re building at ASBA for the benefit of the entire industry. Mark your calendars and start planning for next year’s Winter Meeting, February 20-22, 2026 as we’ll be returning to Costa Rica!

We continue to expand our presence and participation among partner organizations and events, to gain exposure for ASBA and its members. In March we exhibited at RacquetX in Miami; and hosted a member panel to discuss trends in designing and building racquet sports facilities. In April, we attended NWFA’s Wood Flooring Expo in Charlotte to build and strengthen our presence in the Indoor Sports Surfaces space. These are valuable touchpoints that give our members increased exposure, and open doors to future collaborations with partners in parallel universes.

ASBA’s facility awards program opened up in late March. We’ve made some enhancements to the awards submission portal which should make the entry process easier than ever. Take advantage of this opportunity for recognition of the great work we do as builders and designers. Mark our deadline, June 9th, on your calendars and make this the year to submit your entries to the ASBA Awards program!

Here’s to a busy Spring/Summer season for all of us! Build it Right! ★

ASBA Awards: More Ways to Win!

Did you know there are more ways than ever to win with the ASBA’s awards program? Here they are.

New Awards Category!

ASBA is now offering a new awards category: Tennis & Pickleball Facilities. This comes on the heels of popular demand as more facilities are becoming racquet and paddle sport centers, with courts for various sports included.

To find the new category, go to the ASBA website (sportsbuilders. org) and using the blue toolbar at the top of the page, mouse over to “Programs.” A drop-down menu will include “Awards.” Click on “Facility Awards.” Under “Distinguished Facility Award Categories,” you will see the new category, which is listed under the heading of “Tennis.”

Don’t forget: Application deadline is June 9, 2025, at 11:59 pm Eastern!

Get Certification Points!

In 2023, ASBA introduced a new rule: For any project submitted that is honored in the category appropriate to his or her certification, the certified builder can obtain up to three points in one year – and six points over the course of three years. In other words, each winning project makes the certified builder eligible for one point, with a maximum of three points each year.

That rule is still in effect, so look at it as a win/win: A way of getting extra recognition for a project you worked on, and certification points to boot!

Market Your Business!

It’s no secret that a win in ASBA’s Distinguished Facility Awards program is a big win for marketing your business. Being able to tell prospective clients that your project was honored makes YOU look good. For extra mileage, mention your win on your company’s website and on social media.

Facilities are Starting to Specify ASBA Certificates of Distinction in Their Bids. Are You Prepared?

Designed to recognize those ASBA Supplier Division Member Companies that understand the standards of design, construction and maintenance of sports facilities and gives a distinction to those companies that contribute to and share in the betterment of ASBA and the industry.

HEADLINE NEWS

Note: The awards process hinges on the fine details of projects. For this reason, ASBA strongly encourages member companies to carefully review all the information on the Facility Awards, including official rules, categories, application and judging process, and costs/deadlines prior to submitting an application.

Distinguished Facility award winners in all facility categories are notified of their status in late summer. Announcement of the Facility of the Year winners are made during this year’s ASBA Technical Meeting, to be held in San Antonio from December 2-5.

In order to qualify for entry, a company must be an ASBA member in good standing. Projects submitted must have been completed within the current year or within the previous two calendar years (ending Dec. 31 prior to the application deadline).

Don’t wait! The application deadline is closer than you think: June 9, 2025, at 11:59 pm Eastern. ★

RacquetX: The Recap

When RacquetX, a festival of racquet sports facilities, landed in Miami in March, it made a big statement: Court sports are here to stay. Whether those sports are played indoors or outdoors, in singles or in doubles, business is big, booming and brilliant.

And since the three-day event was co-located with the Miami Open and included some up-and-comers like padel and pickleball, the event encouraged attendees to embrace all sports, including those on the horizon.

ASBA had a booth on the show floor, and also hosted a panel on “Design and Build: What Goes Into Creating the New Wave of Racquet Sports Facilities.” And with ASBA’s new Tennis and Pickleball Facilities category in its awards program, the time was right for the topic of facilities that included a number of different sports under one umbrella. (For more information on this awards category, see the article on page 6).

Expect to see ASBA at a future RacquetX; details will be carried in this magazine as soon as they are available. ★

ASBA Working on New Padel Manual

One of the sports that received a lot of attention at RacquetX was padel, the court sport that is making serious inroads into the American club market. Accordingly, ASBA is working on a new publication, Padel Courts: Construction, Installation & Maintenance Manual.

Like other construction publications by the Association, the padel manual leverages industry expertise from members and governing

bodies to cover topics such as facility design, construction, maintenance and repair. The publication will go to print soon and is expected to be available in summer of 2025.

Advertising is still being accepted for this publication, so if you would like your company to be featured, please email kristin@sportsbuilders.org. ★

An Interview with Todd Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA)

Industry Views is a regular column in Build It Right, featuring an interview with an industry partner whose work is helping to drive evolution. Have a suggestion for someone to interview? E-mail our editor at maryhelen@sportsbuilders.org

Back in October, SFIA announced the appointment of Todd Smith as President and Chief Executive Officer. Smith succeeded longtime President/CEO, Tom Cove, who retired from the post.

Smith, who most recently served as the Senior Vice President at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, has a strong background in sports and fitness industry. He served as a Director of Global Partnerships for AEG, a global leader in the sports and entertainment industry and has worked with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, NHL’s LA Kings and MLS’s LA Galaxy as a leader in sponsorship sales, marketing and fan engagement. He holds a master’s degree in sports management from LSU and a bachelor’s degree from UCLA.

ASBA sat down with Todd to discuss his goals for and experiences so far with SFIA.

American Sports Builders Association: You have been in the position for several months now; are you settling in?

Todd Smith: I certainly by no means have it all figured out but I am really enjoying being here.

American Sports Builders Association: What is a chief concern among SFIA members?

Todd Smith: Tariffs, definitely; everyone is concerned about tariffs.

American Sports Builders Association: Shifting to the sports side, what is really growing?

Todd Smith: Certainly, there is an influx of demand for pickleball courts. There are a lot of new players and they are looking for courts.

American Sports Builders Association: Are you hearing about padel as well?

Todd Smith: I think padel is incredibly unique. The signs say it is growing but it presents a challenge in terms of facilities and we all know that the growth of any sport is directly connected to having the facilities available for players. If you are going to repurpose a warehouse, for example, you need to make sure you are working with a facility that has the proper height over court that will be necessary for play.

American Sports Builders Association: What other sports do you see as growth opportunities?

Todd Smith: We have the FIFA World Cup coming up so there is going to be heightened interest, and rightfully so, about soccer. It really presents an amazing opportunity for the sport. One of the hurdles to growth in communities has been that there are not enough fields for everyone to play on; USA Soccer and many other groups are going to be focused on building more fields using the earnings from the World Cup.

At the same times, the Olympics will be coming to the U.S. and we always see what is called the Olympic Bounce afterwards, where more folks get engaged in sports as a result. There will be some new sports there as well, such as cricket and flag football; flag football is one that has taken the country by storm, particularly at the high school level. We saw in 2024 that all team participation sports across the youth market have increased.

American Sports Builders Association: What do you think is the biggest threat to keeping youth engaged in sports?

Todd Smith: As an individual, you can only do one thing at a time and now, there are many more choices for how to spend your time. Years ago, sports and fitness were not competing with apps, mobile devices and video games for attention. The good news is there are still things that kids can do as a team, like esports and robotics, even fishing. It would be easy to get isolated but people seem to like connecting with others.

American Sports Builders Association: What are you most looking forward to?

Todd Smith: As we look at the country over the next 10 years, we see that from 2025 to 2034, the U.S. will play host to a historic lineup, including the Summer and Winter Olympic Games and world championships in soccer, rugby and baseball. It will be the most opportune time in our country, certainly in my lifetime, to rally the USA around what sports can bring, not just fitness but self-confidence and all the other amazing benefits.

We’re never going to have this chance again and no matter what, we will never be able to replicate the excitement of this. We want to bottle up the energy and sustain it. SFIA has created a campaign called 2034WARD, to drive industry growth, expand participation and inspire a new generation of athletes and fitness enthusiasts during what is shaping up to be an unprecedented decade for our country. ★

USTA Grant Program Expected to Boost Construction of Courts

Key to the USTA’s goal of reaching 35 million tennis players in the U.S. by the year 2035 is ensuring there are enough courts and facilities for people of all abilities to use.

Ultimately, it is funding that makes the difference between projects that make it to construction and those that languish on the drawing board. That is where the USTA’s Tennis Venue Services (TVS) department comes in. The program provides grants for facility upgrades or new construction, as well as offering support in other areas.

In 2024, TVS celebrated two decades of working to bring new facilities and courts online and renovating and updating existing facilities to keep them playable. Since 2005, the USTA’s TVS grant program has awarded more than $19 million in TVS grants, including $1.2 million in 2024 that impacted more than 500 courts in more than 60 communities. (In fact, since 2020 alone, TVS grants to 241 projects across the country have impacted nearly 2,000 tennis courts.)

Last year, TVS issued about $1.8 million in grants for tennis infrastructure. For

2025, that grant amount available has been increased to $10 million, creating increased opportunities for those who need facilities – and for builders who can serve them.

The TVS grant application process also has been streamlined, making it easier to apply for funding, the USTA’s Todd Carlson adds, while also making it faster for approved projects to receive funds. TVS grants fall into three categories, from basic facility improvements (Category I), to resurfacing of existing facilities, adding or replacing lighting, fencing, etc. (Category II), to new construction and reconstruction (Category III).

For each approved project, grant funding is capped at $60,000. And Carlson notes that USTA is more than willing to talk through any questions.

“We’re always ready to jump on a call with someone. We want to help them prioritize tennis.”

Information on the Tennis Venue Services is available at usta.com/facilities.

TVS grant recipients receive start-to-finish project management assistance from the

USTA’s TVS team, including complimentary services, such as:

• Technical Services, including facility assessments; help with renovation plans; reviews of bids and construction documents, suggestions for cost-saving measures, etc.

• Business Services, such as help connecting public and private developers, financial recommendations, identifying potential partners and funding sources, as well as assistance with business plans.

• Advocacy Services, including providing tools, research and data to help support local tennis projects.

• Facility Management Support and Digital Tools, to help oversee court bookings, promote the business and more.

Note: Facilities must be open to the public to qualify for TVS grant funding.

USTA TVS grants and services extend only to tennis facilities. For facilities that will serve multiple sports, such as tennis and pickleball, tennis and padel, etc., USTA will prorate its support to cover only the tennis portion of the facilities. ★

SFIA Topline Report Has Good News for Sports Facility Construction Industry

With more Americans active than ever before, and with participation numbers higher than even 2019, the road ahead is looking good for ASBA’s members.

That’s the takeaway from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s Topline Participation Report: Sports, Fitness and Leisure Activities. The report is available for purchase on the SFIA website.

Here is a synopsis of some of those findings:

Sports Televised in the Olympics Saw Significant Growth

Sports featured in the 2024 Paris Olympics, such as basketball, gymnastics, swimming, track & field, skateboarding, volleyball and wrestling, experienced significant participation increases.

More players will drive a need for more

programs, such as leagues, camps and tournaments. Those events, in turn, will need places to be held. ASBA members can expect increased demand on existing facilities, which could lead to more upgrades – and to the construction of other facilities.

Looking down the road, the Los Angeles Games in 2028 will include showcase sports like lacrosse and cricket, as well as flag football, meaning we can expect a repeat of this phenomenon.

Racquet Sports Are Booming

Racquet sports continued their recent unprecedented growth, much of which started in COVID when people came out to play tennis and pickleball in record numbers. (In fact, for the fourth consecutive year, pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the U.S)

In 2024, 19.8 million Americans participated in pickleball, a 45.8% increase from the 2023 figure and an incredible 311% increase from three years ago. Five of the seven racquet sports that SFIA tracks increased their total participation numbers, with the second-largest growth in tennis (8%).

The USTA has long promoted the establishment of separate facilities for tennis and pickleball. Between that, and its increased funding for grants for court construction and repair (see elsewhere in this magazine), it is reasonable to expect a nationwide need for new and better facilities.

Growth in Other Sports Likely to Create a Need for Facilities

The SFIA report notes that team sports have continued to grow in participation numbers, and that growth will drive facility

owners to take a hard look at what they have, and to upgrade those facilities or build more, depending upon the sport.

The report shows that basketball, football (flag), football (tackle), football (7-on-7),

showing participation increases. Notable increases were seen in aquatic exercise, boot camp-style training, cardio kickboxing, cross-training style workouts, barre, Pilates training, tai chi and yoga. Treadmill participation exceeded pre-pandemic

While it might be easy for ASBA members to ask, “What’s in it for me?” when it comes to outdoor activities, it is essential to remember that people will train for these activities indoors, bolstering the numbers of those hitting the gym.

Results of Coach & AD Survey Provide Insights on Facility Improvement Plans

Recently, ASBA worked with Coach & Athletic Director Magazine to gather information from school sports personnel on their plans for building or improving athletic facilities. While all Association members received information on the results of the survey, here are a few quick insights.

New sports being instituted included the following:

Indoor Sports:

• Girls’ or Women’s Wrestling

• Table Tennis

• Esports

• Basketball

Outdoor Sports:

• Girls’ or Women’s Flag Football

• Ultimate

• Lacrosse (both genders)

• Soccer

Priorities for upgrades and construction were expressed across a wide range of dates and facilities; however, two priorities emerged: Equipment (with 61 percent of respondents saying they would be purchasing within one to two years) and Lighting (with 50 percent of respondents noting they planned to upgrade their current systems across a number of years).

Additionally, the survey identifies the individuals who play a role in the planning process and highlights the top challenges schools face. The responses received were insightful and informative and will be valuable to members who want to develop strategies to address the challenges and opportunities in the athletic facility improvement space. ★

DIVISION REPORTS

At the most recent ASBA Winter Meeting, each Membership Division had an opportunity to meet and to discuss relevant issues. Here are some talking points from those meetings.

COURTS DIVISION

Todd Dettor, Courts Division President, led the meeting with approximately 40 Division representatives present. The representatives discussed potential session topics for the 2025 Technical Meeting.

USTA’s Todd Carlson reported on the changes to USTA’s grant program. The organization has increased its budget for facility grants from $1.2 million to $10 million for 2025 and streamlined the application process.

The Division discussed challenges in working with concrete; one problem is that coatings will peel from the surface prematurely, allegedly due to new additives in concrete mixes. It was suggested that ASBA should draft a position paper explaining the prevalence of this situation. The Tennis Technical Committee will be asked to collaborate on a draft paper.

Staff discussed the courts video project being considered that would provide USTA with a resource to help identify the severity of repair needs on outside courts. ASBA has tried to collect video footage from members to serve as the base for such a video. Staff will resend the link for footage. It was agreed that this could be integrated with a session on “Resurface vs. Reconstruction.”

The use of real-time survey tools/text services in the session to solicit questions and feedback for presenters was discussed; ASBA staff will research this. ★

FIELDS DIVISION

Allen Verdin, CFB, Fields Division President, started the meeting with 28 Division members present. Verdin cited that as of the meeting date, the fields division had 82 Certified Builders.

Verdin provided updates on the SFMA meeting in Jan of 2025. He then opened the floor for discussion about the 2026 ASBA presentation and solicited topics from the group.

Requested during the meeting were topics needed for the governing bodies who would be meeting in May (NCAA, NFHS and World Athletics).

The ASBA Fields Academy update was given and a summary of last year and this year’s numbers were discussed. Committee updates included the fact that the Fields Division has new representation on the following committees:

• CFB Committee: Daniel Benner, CFB-S

• Awards Committee: Ross Rettler

• The ASBA Academy Continues to seek a new member from the Fields Division

• Fields Manual Task Force: To be chaired by Chris Franks, CFB

• No changes to the ASTM Advisory Council and Fields Technical Advisory Council

The meeting then moved on to the task of reviewing the information and survey results from the 2024 ASBA Fields sessions at the Technical Meeting. The group identified sessions the survey respondents had asked for, as well as other sessions that the group recommended. After all session ideas were recorded, the group then narrowed down the sessions to their top seven and identified session Champions and potential speakers. ★

TRACK DIVISION

Track Division President Jordan Fisher, CTB led the meeting with approximately 23 Division representatives present.

Fisher shared a list of topic ideas collected from the 2024 Technical Meeting and other sources. Attendees discussed each one as well as new ideas presented during the meeting. The group then narrowed the topics to seven sessions along with an alternative, if needed, and identified Session Champions and speakers.

John Nelson collected feedback from attendees regarding the ASBA Academy curriculum and interest in more advanced curriculum in the future.

Attendees of the Track Division meeting also discussed possible future virtual offerings of a CTB University session and/or Awards application best practices. ★

INDOOR SPORTS SURFACES DIVISION

Jay Henley, Indoor Sports Surfaces Division President, led the session. William Thornton gave a brief update on ASTM and on MFMA.

Because the Indoor Sports Surfaces Division interacts with a number of other industry groups, Larry Wade volunteered to send a list of affiliate organizations that ASBA might consider for complimentary invitations to the 2025 Technical Meeting.

To enhance engagement with other companies in the indoor surfacing market and involvement in ASBA’s awards program, it was suggested that ASBA send out an e-blast to those who might be interested.

The Division suggested that ASBA have an ISS Division present to provide representation at the NCAA meeting.

It was suggested the ISS have a one day training course before the Technical Meeting at a local facility that needs minor flooring repairs.

The following Indoor Sports Surfaces Workshops were discussed:

• Floor Preparation, Cushioned Vinyl Sports Flooring & Polyurethane Pad & Pour Installation Training: September 9, 2025, at Mapei Plant, Logan Township, New Jersey

• Gym Floor School: September 29 - October 2, 2025 (Sanding); October 6 - October 9, 2025 (Paint & Finish), in Billings, Montana

Henley went over all the ISS-related sessions from 2024 and noted feedback from Division members.

The group selected the 2025 sessions, as well as speakers and Session Champions. ★

ASBA keeps an eye on subjects that are getting attention and that may affect those at the sports facility level. Here are a few of those.

Rugby Experiencing a Growth Spurt

With the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup and the 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cup (both being held in the USA) on the horizon, rugby is seeing an uptick of interest. According to USA Rugby, more than 100,000 of the organization’s members play in over 2,500 clubs nationwide, with college and high school-age players comprising nearly half of the community.

At the NCAA level, rugby is an Emerging Sport for Women and the sport is now contested in the Olympics. In November of this coming year, Ireland’s national team will take on the New Zealand All Blacks at Soldier Field in Chicago. This is actually a rematch; the last time the two teams faced off in Chicago, Ireland pulled off an upset. It’s also one of the buzziest games of the year and is shaping up to be incredibly lucrative for Chicago; the average ticket price is $400.

Cities Adding International Sports Venues

In Portland, Oregon, a community park has added the city’s first court for chinlone, a traditional sport of Myanmar. In Middlesex, New Jersey, a park overhaul will include a brand-new cricket field. In Everett, Washington, korfball has been showcased to curious crowds.

These are all examples of international sports venues that are being added, generally at the municipal level, in response to demographic shifts. It has been noted that these facilities allow immigrants to connect with one another and to establish friendships and business relationships, particularly while adapting to life in the U.S.

The NRPA, in a Parks Inclusion Report, noted, that park and rec agencies in urban locales were more likely to offer programing and activities geared to multicultural, racial or ethnic communities, as well as others.

TRF’s Summer Program, Camp Build, Coming to Virginia

San Jose, California-based nonprofit The Rosendin Foundation recently announced the return of its TRF Camp Build, a free summer camp designed to introduce middle school students to construction careers.

This year, the weeklong day camp will be located in Sterling, Virginia and will be open for students in sixth to eighth grades during the week of July 14. While at the camp, students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities led by skilled trade professionals, with sessions in personal safety training, wiring lamps, concrete pouring, pipe bending, rebar shoring and other aspects of construction.

Women’s Wrestling Now an NCAA Championship

Sport

Indoor sports facilities at the high school and college level may soon need more space and equipment to accommodate new wrestling programs.

At its most recent annual convention, the NCAA added women’s wrestling as its 91st championship sport. The first NCAA Women’s Wrestling Championship is expected to be held in winter of 2026.

Women’s wrestling is poised for explosive growth, and its championship status is expected to lead to even more participation at the high school level. According to the 2023-2024 NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, participation on girls’ wrestling teams has continued to rise, with 64,257 participants last year – an increase of 102 percent from the 31,654 in 2021-22. ★
