ASBA has added a new publication to its bookshelf. The inaugural edition of Padel Courts: Installation & Maintenance Manual is now available for purchase on the Association’s website for $39.95, in both hard copy and electronic format.
The new manual, written by an editorial committee that included representation from both ASBA and the United States Padel Association as well as builders and suppliers in the industry, covers padel court dimensions, planning and design, base construction, maintenance, discussion of the installation of court kits, indoor and outdoor facilities, amenities and accessories, lighting and a wealth of information on industry sources, including professional
organizations, trade publications and organizations of teaching professionals.
In addition to being written in a user-friendly format and offering comprehensive information, the manual is illustrated with photos and detailed diagrams.
The goal of the publication is to provide readers with the facts they need to make informed decisions on issues such as contractor selection, court placement, wind and soil considerations and other factors – and to avoid having them try to source unverified information.
Within the United States, interest in the sport of padel has grown rapidly, prompting ASBA to include an educational session, “Padel Court Installation in the U.S. and What to Know Before You Build,” in its upcoming Technical Meeting, to be held December 2-5, 2025 in San Antonio, Texas at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio.
To locate the publication on the website, mouse over the top blue toolbar until you get to the tab reading “Resources.” A drop-down menu will appear. Click on “Publications” to be taken to ASBA’s online bookstore. ★

There’s been a burst of growth in high school sports and girls are the main accelerant. The best part: It will translate into a need for more, and better, sports facilities, both indoors and outdoors.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, which recently released its High School Athletics Participation Survey, the most recent academic year brought an all-time high in terms of the numbers of student athletes. There was a total of 8,260,891 participants, up from the previous record of 8,062,302 set in 2023-24.
NFHS further states that the bulk of that increase came in girls’ sports, with wrestling and flag football leading the way. ASBA has covered the explosive growth of these sports in previous issues; however, according to NFHS, there has been a 60 percent uptick in the number of girls playing flag football since last year, and a 15 percent bump in the number of girls wrestling.
Plus, according to the survey, traditional sports are as strong as
they have ever been; those Friday night lights are in no danger of dimming. This past year, the number of schools sponsoring 11-player football on the boys’ side was only 10 shy of a record high set more than 15 years ago.
Boys’ outdoor track and field, soccer and golf had significant gains, and all 10 of the most popular sports held steady or registered increases. Also in the top 10 for boys were basketball, soccer, baseball, wrestling, cross country, golf, tennis and swimming/diving.
On the girls’ side, the news is still good. Outdoor track and field, volleyball and soccer all registered increases and remained the top three participatory sports for girls. Basketball remained in the No. 4 spot followed by fastpitch softball. Competitive spirit jumped to the sixth most popular girls’ sport with a nearly 14 percent increase, while tennis also increased by more than four percent. Cross country, swimming and diving and lacrosse rounded out the top 10. ★

Melanie Taylor, President and CEO, Synthetic Turf Council
The Synthetic Turf Council (STC) continues to champion responsible policies and regulations for synthetic turf, ensuring access to safe, sustainable spaces. Here’s a look at the organization’s recent efforts and outcomes across key states:
• New York: STC is engaged with the Carpet and Rug Institute and Carpet Cushion Council in the planning for the state carpet collection program.
• New York City: STC is connecting with City Council members and local stakeholders regarding Bill 1202, which will likely be considered in the fall session. STC is also identifying third-party stakeholders who can help share STC’s park and outdoor space access messaging.
• California: STC successfully removed synthetic turf language from the California Board of Forestry’s Zone Zero Regulatory Advisory Committee, preventing a ban of synthetic turf within five feet of homes. STC also testified before the Beverly Hills City Council and pushed the city to vote down a proposed turf ban on private front yards. Discussions with the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) on PFAS continue, with a profile expected next year, as well as future considerations for categorizing microplastics as a chemical.
• Massachusetts: STC is monitoring legislative developments for S2187 and H3339, which would ban synthetic turf fields in the state.
• Colorado: STC offered amendments to HB25-1113, distinguishing between functional and nonfunctional turf. STC is now educating local policymakers on turf regulations in the state.
• Maine: STC opposed LD1177 this year. In June, the Appropriations Committee did not take action on the bill, so it will likely be considered again when the legislature convenes in January 2026.
• Florida: HB 683 was signed into law in June, and STC is working with Florida’s DEP on finalizing rules around synthetic turf in the state.
• Maryland: STC is collaborating with the Department of the Environment on a synthetic turf study mandated by HB 457.
The STC mission is to lead, educate and advocate for the synthetic turf industry. Founded in 2003, STC assists buyers and end users with the selection, use and maintenance of synthetic turf systems in sports field, golf, municipal parks, airports, landscape and residential applications.
The organization is a resource for current, credible and independent research on the safety and environmental impact of synthetic turf, as well as technical guidance on the selection, installation, maintenance and environmentally responsible disposal of synthetic turf.
Membership includes builders, landscape architects, testing labs, maintenance providers, manufacturers, suppliers, installation contractors, infill material suppliers and other specialty service companies. Learn more at www.syntheticturfcouncil.org. ★

1985: David H. Pettit, Esq. is hired as the Association’s first legal counsel. He remains the longest-tenured advisor to date. (In 2024, he was presented with the Industry Merit Award in recognition of his service to the Association through the years.)
1988: The Joseph E. Shaner Company of Baltimore is chosen to manage the USTC&TBA.
1988: The Technical Meeting is held in Montreal, marking the first time to be offered outside the U.S. (Fun Fact: Members in the trade show complained about difficulties getting samples of

There’s a fast-growing sector in the sports events market and it isn’t youth, although it’s made up of athletes who used to fall into that category: Adult leagues with regular programming in everything from softball and pickleball to golf, bar games and bowling (and everything in between). Proponents say leagues are helping people make friends, stay active and keep the competitive spirit alive after graduating from high school and/or college.
The Sport & Social Industry Association, a nonprofit trade organization, serves businesses that produce, manage or operate adult sports leagues, tournaments and/or social events. SSIA was founded in 2010 to foster communication, collaboration and community in the industry.

American Sports Builders Association: We hear a lot about adult leagues in so many cities. Do you know the nationwide expansion rate?
Galen Beers: We don’t really have data so it’s hard to speculate but there is definite growth.
American Sports Builders Association: Do you see any impediment to that growth?
Galen Beers: We definitely live in a digital world and you have a lot of people who find it easier not to be active.
American Sports Builders Association: Which sports are the most popular nationwide among adults?
Galen Beers: It varies by clubs, and by the locations of those clubs. Overall, though, I’d say that volleyball is at or near the top; there is also a lot of participation in soccer, softball, kickball, basketball, flag football and pickleball. Cornhole, bowling
and dodgeball are also represented, as are a lot of other sports.
American Sports Builders Association: Do most clubs use municipal fields and facilities?
Galen Beers: Many groups are dependent on, and many have partnerships with, parks and rec departments or local schools, to use their facilities. Sometimes, municipalities will farm adult events out to be run by sport and social clubs so that they have someone to take care of all the administrative work, like getting referees, scheduling games and setting up parties at the end of the season.
American Sports Builders Association: What do you see as the biggest challenge facing club owners?
Galen Beers: The day to day management of these organizations as a whole can be challenging but what can be really difficult is trying to keep up the inventory of facilities. It’s not just registering the people who are interested; it’s having space for those people to play their given sport. If facilities become unavailable, it creates a real problem.
American Sports Builders Association: How are club owners responding to a shortage of facilities?
Galen Beers: Some have discovered it’s just easier to buy or lease an existing space; some have actually had facilities built from the ground up.
American Sports Builders Association: What else do your members say is a challenge?
Galen Beers: Again, it depends on the market but I’d say that climate drives a lot of frustration. Some markets are hardly ever rained out of a game but in some areas, it’s a constant concern.

American Sports Builders Association: How is the membership of SSIA structured?
Galen Beers: Our membership has tiers based on the size of each business as measured by revenue. Larger businesses really fund the industry.
American Sports Builders Association: Do you have meetings?
Galen Beers: Yes, we have one meeting a year, the Sport and Social Industry Conference in February. It is presented in the U.S. one year and abroad the next. This year, it was held in Las Vegas. In 2026, it will be in Cancun.
American Sports Builders Association: Do you work with the national governing bodies?
Galen Beers: You know, we don’t really get involved with them right now. I would say we are open to partnerships. ★

ASBA periodically recounts rule changes that may affect the way facilities are constructed, marked or appointed (including equipment that is either experimental, recommended or mandatory.)
Rule changes affecting athletes (uniforms, sportsmanship, transfer, NIL issues, etc.) or the game itself (what constitutes a foul, etc.) are not covered here.
Information presented here is only reviewed briefly; full information can be gained through the governing bodies mentioned.
The National Federation of State High School Associations recently released a list of updated rules ahead of the 2026 boys’ high school lacrosse season.
One on-field equipment and game administration rule change is that cones are now required at the corners of the team areas (Rule 1-2-9).
A complete listing of the boys’ lacrosse rules changes is available on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org.
Effective with the 2026 season, the following rule changes will take effect:
• A change in the high jump and pole vault concerns the addition of “items above ground level” to pad-
ding requirements in Rules 6-9-21 and 6-9-28. The addition of ‘above ground level’ clarifies that the padding requirement applies specifically to hard and unyielding surfaces that are elevated relative to the ground.
This refinement is expected to help differentiate between surfaces that present a greater risk of impact during a fall (such as raised concrete, asphalt, wood or platform extensions) versus ground-level areas that may already be accounted for with landing system setup.
• A change in Rule 3-2-3 gives the games committee the authority to determine the distance of takeoff boards in the horizontal jumps. As a result, the games committee can determine takeoff board placement in the long jump and triple jump aligning with its
existing role in setting starting heights for the high jump and pole vault.
• Two changes were made in Rule 9 regarding Indoor Track and Field. In Rule 9-1-1, the 200-meter dash was approved as an option for the 300-meter dash in the official Order of Events. The committee noted the change provides states with greater flexibility to structure events based on facility size and supports broader participation.
• The other change in indoor track rules involves Rule 9-6-1, which establishes a uniform 20-meter exchange zone and creates a single standard for ease in officiating indoor relays.
A complete listing of track & field rule changes is available on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org ★

ASBA keeps an eye on subjects that are getting attention and that may affect those at the sports facility level. Here are a few of those.
After years of discussion and planning, construction of a youth baseball complex near the movie site for Kevin Costner’s 1989 “Field of Dreams” is finally underway. The first phase of the facility is expected to have four diamonds, plus concessions and restroom buildings, with designs inspired by traditional Iowa corn cribs.
First came the “picklemalls,” where defunct big-box stores were turned into pickleball clubs, promoted by a variety of franchises. Those are proliferating nationwide, with companies like Pickleball Kingdom, PickleRage, Pickleball America, All-Stars Pickleball Club and other gobbling up unused and capitalizing on the popularity of the sport.
Now, get ready for the next wave: Fitness malls. Multiple health club franchises are
choosing to use space to create upscale gym and fitness experiences – including those with pools (some of those were rooftop pools). Proponents point to the fact that such venues already have parking, are accessible and contain restrooms.
The MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee set a new MLB regular-season attendance record with 91,032 fans with a game between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds.
While the facility has a 150,000-seat capacity, ticket sales for the August event were capped around 90,000 due to visibility concerns from some sections, though the final attendance surpassed the prior record of 84,587 from 1954.
Get ready for indoor facilities to see a lot

more promotions for karate. It’s all a part of the sport’s crusade to get back into the Olympics, where it was shut out after its appearance as a showcase sport in 2020 in Tokyo. Now, the World Karate Federation (WKF) is eyeing Brisbane 2032 and is already stepping up its public awareness campaign.
After this past summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, which was staged in the USA amid record high temperatures, FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino remarked that for the 2026 World Cup, covered stadiums would be used to host many of the day matches. Infantino’s words were met with blowback, particularly in light of the fact that there are only five covered stadiums on next summer’s World Cup schedule. With tickets already being sold, it’s unlikely schedule changes will be made. ★

The synthetic turf field is designed to address head impact, traction and surface stability to reduce injury risk while maintaining consistent footing and energy return. Early feedback from coaches and players has been favorable, with staff noting the surface performed consistently alongside the program’s natural grass fields.
The updated field also features a bold garnet end zone, a design detail that has drawn attention from fans and FSU-focused media outlets. Already in use, the new field is expected to be a key training space for the Seminoles as they compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in the seasons ahead. ★
