In 1946, Allen and his growing family moved to Napa, California, where he took a job with Hammond Lumber Company in its purchasing department.

During the following ten years he was with the Hammond organization, Dick rose to managerial capacity and, finally, was put in charge of purchasing for the big retail chain ooeration.

When lfammond Lumber was sold to Georgia-Pacific Corp, and the northern retail division subsequenlly resold to Henry F. Bailey's Bailey Lumber Company on October 22, 1956, Allen stayed on as vice-president and general ry?na_ger of the new organization. He resigned that pbsition this Spring ,to realize a long-standing ambition of- having a retail lumberyard of his own.

For $30 worth of materials, a pattern, and a.few weekends' work-anyone can build a traveling vacation home. Called the "Holiday House," 'this new mobile dwelling is not a tent, not a house-trailerbut an easv-tobuild bunkhouse to be mounted on a pick-up truck or trailer. The Holiday House is made of Homasote Building Boards and lx2 lumber-with the help of Easi- Bild Pattern *594. All materials are listed on this building pattern -and all materials are standard lumberyard items.

The pattern simplifies construction with full-scale patterns of angled and curved saw cuts. The pattern is specifically designed for the amateur builder, from the drawings to the instructions. Homasote Board forms a weatherproof "skin"which also insulates against heat and cold.

One'of the surprising features of the Holiday House is that it can be knocked down into five component parts for easy storing when not in use. It takes only 45 minutes to assemble and mount on a pick-up truck or trailer. This feature makes it economical to rent a trailer for a short trip, if a truck or trailer is not otherwise available. The Holiday House is designed for various truck bodies and trailer sizes, so that construction is not a makeshift proposition.
