and Exterior types supplementing the supply of "one side" and "tu'o side" panels.

The nen' appearance grades rvithin the Interior type are Interior A-B and Interior Pl1'Base (I3-D). The former (A-B) is suitable for all inside applications requiring one surface of highest appearance quality (A) and opposite side solid and smooth (B). Interior A-B may be used as an alternate for A-A for cabinet doors, fixtures, displays, etc.

PlyBase (B-D) is the interior grade developed as a base for floor ccverings such as linoleum or s'all to rvall carpeting, backing for rvall tile and many other utility uses. One PlyBase face is smootl-r, solid B veneer rvhile the back veneer (D) for economy permits limited wood defects such as knotholes t'hich do not affect serviceability.

The ne wappearance grades within the Exterior type are EXT-DFPA.A-B and EXT-DFPA Utility (B-C.) The Extericr A-B has the same veneer characteristics as the Interior A-B discussed above. It has been developed for all permanent outdoor, marine and refrigeration uses requiring one surface of high appearance the other solid and smooth. Can be used as an alternate for EXT-DFPA.A-A.

EXT-DFPA.Utility is the second nerv Exterior grade. Sanded on both sides this grade meets use requirements for all permanent outdoor applications u'here one solid, smooth, "utility" surface meets appearance needs, such as farm structures, roadside stands, construction buildings and the like. The back is of C quality veneer.

Glue Line Bettered

Proved by over 15 years' service in a multitude of outdoor, industrial and marine applications, Exterior type

Douglas fir plyu, ood is now manufactured in accordance u'ith performance requirements that are higher than ever before. The edge-brand "IlT-DFPA" affords positive identification of Exterior type plyrvood manufactured rvith completely rvaterproof phenolic resin adhesives.

N{ost versatile grade lvithin the Exterior-type is the PlyShield grade rvhich has a face of A veneer and back of C. This new one-side grade is used extensively as the exterior paneling grade for modern siding, sofrfrts, breezeways, porch ceilings, outdoor signs, truck bodies and such marine uses a cabins, bulkheads and built-ins of pleasure and work boats.

In accordance with the new standard, Interior type Douglas lir plywood is now manufactured with improved glues several times more durable than previously. This higher performance is added insurance against any deterioration such as rain or moisture that might conceivably be encountered during construction. It should be used exclusively for inside applications or such structural parts as roof and wall sheathing, subflooring and underlayment.

Plyform Performance Boosted

Plyform, the multiple re-use concrete form grade that falls within the Interior type now is manufactured u'ith both faces of the new B quality veneer described above. Plyform continues to be of special inner-ply construction for added strength in the rugged job for which it is intended, and continues to be edge'sealed and mill-oiled unless otherwise specified.

New Panel Sizes

Of interest to plywood retailers and users alike is the fact that plywood panels are now manufactu:'ed in new stock sizes which reduce the total number of sizes manufactured by about 25 per cent. The largest volume of fir plywood is produced in panels 4'x8'. Standard sizes include widths of 2f', 3', 3%' and 4' and lengths of. 5', 6, 7', 8'. 9', LU and lV.

Because of its large size, plyrvood makes possible savings of up to 50 per cent and more over ordinary lumber in handling and labor costs. Extra long plywood panels are available in lengths of from 16' to 24'. Even panels as long as 50' can be manufactured and shipped.

Quality Control

Additional evidence of the plywood industry's quality mindedness and proof positive to consumers that the plywood they buy lives up to the rigid specified standards is the statistical quality control program calling for systematic random sampling of productibn.

Under this program, a corps of inspectors constantly circulates among the mills choosing plywood samples that rvill be tested in one of the two industry-owned laboratories

Dealers Selling Giant Panels

Giant panels of Super-Hartjord plywood are now a stdple item in the distributing stocks of the George E. Ream Co., Los Angeles. These panels, available from stock in various thicknesses and in lengths up to 20 feet are on hand for the dealer trade. Such panels. once a curiosity, now seli more consistently to the trade. They are used for boats, truck bodies, signs, certain architectural features of homes and other buildings, and particularly for uses where cantilever type overhangs or canopies are engineered to take advantage of plywood's lhenomenal strength.

Greater length panels are available on special order, and in any length possible to include in railway car shipmeni

The Ream Company's parent organization, Harbor Plywood Corporation, are the manufacturers of these outsize panels, and are reported to have rnade numerous shipments by rail in lengths up to 49 feet, 6 inches.

Cclpellcr Plywood Compcrny Opercrting Improved Plcrnt Full Time

Mr. Adrian Levy, of San Francisco, president of the Calpella Plywood Company whose plant is located at Calpella, California, reports that their mill is now operating full time, after being closed for a while to permit the installation of new equipment and machinery. They have recently installed an entire new conveyor system, new boiler house and boilers, and a new Coe ten-section dryer. A new Coe lathe and their latest semi-automatic clipper had been previously installed. The capacity of the mill is now 2,000,000 square feet of finished )/s" plywood per month.

The general offices of the company are located in the Mills Building, 220 Montgomery Street, San Francisco 4, California.

Mr. Levy reported that the product of the new mill, whiclr has been in operation since May first, is of the highest possible quality of Douglas fir board.

-one in Tacoma, \Mash., the other in Eugene, Ore. These laboratories make over one quarter million tests each year.

As a result of this program, the glue line performance of the wood and glue sandwich is the highest in the entire history of plyrn'ood manufacture.
