Panel Makers Continue to Up-Grade Product Quality; Introduee New Grades, Sizes to Meet Users'Needs.

The story of the phenomenal growth of the Douglas fir plywood industry is told with a simple syllogism: greater quality means more uses more uses mean more users . more users mean greater production.

Not to be overlooked is the underlying fact that a component part of product quality are the inherent properties of the material itself-large panel size, strength, rigidity, splitproofness, etc. These desirable physical characteristics have all contributed to plywood's widespread acceptance and demand.

Today, the quality of Douglas fir plywood surpasses that of the 1905 product just as today's 1,000-plus uses shade the first fir plywood's single use as a drawer bottom. Production, oT course, has been increased proportionately to supply ever growing usefulness.

Industry Quality Minded

Quality of product, consistently maintained and repeatedly improved to meet new performance standards, has brought plywood the widespread recognition of versatility and dependability.

And today, because of industry devotion to betterment of product, plywood is manufactured in accordance rvith more stringent performance requirements than ever be'NTERIOR.TYPE

fore. Such are the panel prerequisites in the nerv Commercial Standard CS45-48 effective November 1, 1948. Under the new standard, plywood is, more than ever before in its history, manufactured in types, grades and sizes tailored expressly to meet the actual use requirements in its myriad applications.

New Grading System

Of special interest to lumber dealers is the new, simplified grading system called for by the standard. Under this system the outer or face veneers are known by simple ABC appearance designations. The A veneer, logically, is the highest quality. The B veneer is a new quality; it afiords a smooth, solid surface only somewhat lower in appearance than the A. Small defects such as tight knots and circular repair plugs are permitted in the new B veneer.

C and D quality veneers are structurally sound, although they have certain appearance defects such as restricted knot holes. Such veneers are intended for panel backs or for both outer plies of structural plywood such as sheathing rvhere appearance is not important.
