And items such as mock-ups, templates, jigs and stock or special containers mean potential plywood sales. fn recent years, food preparations and storage have taken on added importance. The lumber dealer will find both the simple equipment built by home-owners and large-scale commercial refrigeration construction of frozen food lockers, constitutes a good market for plywood as rvell as other materials.

The ever-grorving number of home craftsmen represents another source of constant plywood customers who will be with you a long time. The wood-working hobbyist's individual purchases may be small, but they add up. Important, too, the plyrvood sales here-in big panels or smaller pieces-can lead to tie-in sales such as paint, hardware. tools.

Farm Uses

Eventually, the farm may prove to be the biggest plywood market of all for many retail lumber dealers in farm communities. For the big, easv-to-use panels are a natural for farm buildings of all sizes and types. They are harrdy for Tarmers or rural builders alike, no matter whether the job at hand is construction of a grain bin, relining a barn, building portable production buildings such as hog houses, or making more livable farm homes.

It's just that plyrvood properties add up to answer farm needs. Big, rigid, puncture-proof sheets that can be cut and fitted with ordinary carpentry tools. Panels that provide tight structures which are sanitary because insectharboring cracks are eliminated. Panels that are easily painted to provide sparkling, sanitary, easy-to-keep-clean surfaces in milk houses, for instance.

Right now, in many areas grain storage is a smacking big problem to farmers as bumper crops come in with carry-over at record highs. Plywood has been proved ideal in many grain bin designs, plans for which are readily available from Douglas Fir Plywood Association at Tacoma 2, Wash., or at agricultural schools.

Prefabricated farm structures represent another farm field for building supply dealers. This is especially true if the current trend of prefabricated small farm buildings in lumber yards continues. Many a retailer has found sales soar when plyrvood panels are merchandised into prefabricated farm units.

Many farmers keep small stocks of building materials on hand at all times. Exterior type fir plywood has a real place in such preparedness because it can help the farmer do so many different jobs easier than he's ever before done them.

Marine Construction

The Exterior type Douglas fir plywood, bonded with completely waterproof phenolic resin adhesive is now the accepted material for all types of marine uses. The problem of joints, the boat-builders' chief headache, is minimized with large panels of Douglas fir plywood. Plywood is used for almost every conceivable type of marine construction, such as plywood skiffs and dinghys, sailboats, power boats, work boats.

Many dealers have found they can get sizable orders for plywood from school shops building boats and other projects from plywood.

The recent development in production of extra-length plywood panels serves as well to extend the plywood sales opportunities in marine construction. These oversize panels are the express answer to many a boat builder's problem, amateur and professional alike, as single panels rvill cover from stem to transom. Most popular lengths are 16, 20, 24-foot sheets for outboards, sailboats and small cruisers. But manufacturers can make any desired length sheets by the recently perfected scarf:jointing method, shipping facilities being the deciding factor.

There are many other plywood uses, of course, which stand out as ready sales builders for dealers for it is the retail lumber dealers who have jointly played so important a part in making plywood the wood of 1,000 uses. But, important, too, is the two-pronged program of plyrn'ood manufacturers dedicated to ever broadening ac'centance of Douglas fir plywood.

The first is quality. Integrity of product is a bywood with fir plyrvood manufacturers with industry performance standards and industry grade marking of product a part of overall marketing. Under the new U. S. Cqmmercial Standard CS455-48, established by the industry through the U. S. Bureau of Standards, glue-line performance requirements are at an all-time high. Appearance grades within both the Exterior and Interior types are tailored to use requirements in order to make the most useful, versatile panels possible from the raw material.

Constant, aggressive advertising and promotion constitutes the second point. A substantial phase of this is devoted to preparation of basic use booklets designed as sales-builders through showing how to capitalize fully on plywood's inherent properties. In addition, sales helps available to retail lumber dealers include folders and leaflets for their customers and their mailings, counter displays, wall hangers, boat plans, advertising mats, etc.
