Big Housing Boom Forecqst for l95Os
Redding, Calif.-A housing construction boon.r dwarfing the one of the past 10 years is due to start in the early 1960's, W. E. Griffee, Portland, assistant secretary-manager of the Western Pine Association, told the annual Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference here Feb. 16.
"When the wartime babies now crot'ding our schools begin to nlarry, our country ahnost certainly will have to build 2,000,000 houses a year," Griffee declared. By way of comparison, he explained that post-war home building hit a peak of 1,395,000 starts in 1950 and reached about 1,330,000 units in 1955.
Griffee said residential construction "really calls the tune for the lumber industry," a6rd on that basis lumber business prospects for the 1960's are excellent.
The 12-state Western Pine region, now producing one-fourth of the nation's softwood lumber, is in a position to rneet increased future demands, Griffee indicated, because timber supplies are ample.
California is already the nurnber two tin.rber volume st;rte irr the nation, and Griffee pointed out tl-rat the new Tirnber Resources Review announced last Fall by the U. S. Forest Service showed the state had half again as rnuch tirnber as lrad been counted in the last appraisal in 1945.
He said the new estimates show "36/o rnore pine, 70/o more Douglas fir, 106/o rnore white fir, and an overall 56/o n.rore timber of all kinds" than in the official estimate of a decade earlier.
Much of California's timber backlog is or,ermature, and the forester-lurrberman indicated a need for action on the part of government agencies now and in the future to "open up their overmature stands faster and to permit as large a cut as the backlog of stumpage and the growing capacitv of the lands u'ill i usti fr'."
