Not since Swan Alverdson wrote the rvorld's first lumber grading rule at Stockholm, Sweden, back in 1754 has a new grading rule caused as mugh comment as the lVest Coast Rule No. 15 rn'hich becomes effective March 15.
Three years in preparation, the newest lumber grading rules will cover Douglas fir, west coast hemlock, western red cedar and Sitka spruce produced in the rain belt of lvestern Washington, rvestern British Columbia, and northern California.
Not content with rervriting the rules r'vhich govern the production of nearly one-half of the nation's softrvood production, the west coast lumber industry invited four of Oregon's loveliest beauties (above) to publicize the change. Now it is not certain which is publicizing which, but it is a safe bet that the nation's 25,000 retail lumber merchants and many thousands of lumber distributors, as well as some millions more carpenters, homeowners and other lumber users, r,vill know something vital and important has happened out in the tall timber country of the far rvest.

The new rules will conform to modern, streamlined merchandising methods, will eliminate much of the misunderstood verbiage of past rules, and have been written so the lumber purchaser can understand what he is buying.
Basicallv all lumber is graded for its suitability for the use intended. There are two major divisions of grading; for appearance (clears, uppers and pattern grades) and for strength (cor..truction lumber, joists, timbers, dimension).
