Information on steel, brick, concrete and other building products is also presented.

"Composites" in Future

A new wood product that utilizes up to 90% of the log is being further tested by the U.S. Forest Service and the American Plywood Association.

Known as "composites," they are made with a core of reconstituted wood (wood fibers bonded together with waterproof glue) and outer layers ofveneer. They combine veneer with relatively low-value materials to produce highervalue building materials.

They can be made in both panel form and as dimension lumber.

These products were used in the construction of demonstration houses built last year in Vancouver, Wa., and Gaithersberg, Md.

The new research phase is aimed at developing siding applications for composite panels as well as refining information on suitability as sheathing.
