Strong repair/remodel market

Structural additions will make up some 40Vo of the $38 billion U. S. "remodeling and repair" rharket next year, according to Morris Robinson, director of the Bureau of Marketing Research, Chicago.

Repair and remodeling is picking up steam as new house costs climb, enticing homeowners to stay with what they have but to reshape it to fit their changing needs. Every five add-on rooms are often considered equal to one new housing start in terms of lumber and similar building material requirements.

Advertising Pays Otf

Holding the line on advertising is important during a recesslon.

Studies show that when a company cuts or stops its advertising program, the competitors' advertising becomes more prominent and gains a bigger share of the market.

The companies holding the line on advertising expenditures in a recession achieve higher sales and new income in those lean years and the years following.

Redwood Paneling Sales Tips

Although redwood takes and holds finishes better than other woods, redwood lumber paneling requires no finishes on surfaces away from grease, moisture and dirt. Left unfinished, redwood paneling will gradually darken in color. A clear sealer can help protect the wood in high traffic areas.

Store Philosophy Pays Off

The family philosophy which Dave Thoesen and Dick Hallett apply to their building supply business, Build 'n Grow in Irvine, Ca., is paying off.

Prospects for a No. 2 store have become a reality with construction on an almost 26,000 sq. ft. establishment in Heritage Square, also in Irvine, underway. Target date for completion is in l0 to l4 months.

At that time, the two owners will move a nucleus of the staff at the present store over to open the new Build 'n Grow. Some 450/o of their employees have been with them since they opened six years ago, according to Dave. When he talks about them, it is easy to see why. 'Professional is one term he applies. He considers the employees the finest and well deserving of the exceptional treatment they receive. Profit sharing is part of the store philosophy. Good fringe benefits and an atmosphere of interest, warmth and trust help to build employee loyalty.

The togetherness feeling continues after working hours with the employees and owners playing basketball, taking trips to baseball games, and special events. EmPloYees who play together, stay together becomes a reality for the company, he feels.

Customers are part of the sPecial feeling, too. They seem to sense that they are valued and imPortant and reciprocate by being interested in the store and its peoPle. An example of customer involvement is the excitement of the customers, as reported by Owner Thoesen, over a recent newspaper article featuring Build 'n Grow.

Build 'n Grow is the result of two friends wanting their own businesses. Since both had backgrounds in hardware and building suPPlies, the final choice of involvement was a natural. Dave worked for Bourget Brothers in Santa Monica for eight years and Dick was employed by Sears and Ole's.

Tentative plans include a third store which will be in the neighborhood.
