"With the qualified labor force declining and manufacturers consolidating, this should lead to more inplant manufacturing of housing components," said Craig Adair, director of market research at APA.
The results of the first studY spurred the researchers to delve deeper into the specific markets of wall panels and roof trusses, which identified specific species of lumber preferred by manufacturers, and consumer satisfaction rating levels of lumber and structural panels.
The second study confirmed the same trend as the first one-panelized walls are the trend of the future in single-family home construction.
With OSB reigning as the top sheathing used at over 7O7o and plywood at just under l07o nationwide in 2001, wood structural panels dominate the panelized wall market.
Nationwide, wall panelizers' use of other sheathing products, such as foam, fiberboard and foil-faced kraftboard remain at less than 57o.
The percentage of panels consumed varied per region as well. Plywood stood at 22Vo in the West, but only 57o in the North and 4Vo in the South.

Stud Mill Begins Production
Roseburg Forest Products has begun producing studs at its new mill in Dillard, Or.

The facility utilizes state-of-the-art technology to maximize the use of wood fiber in the production of premium studs. A large, high-speed 353 barker significantly increases the number of logs processed per hour. The blocks are laser scanned and positioned in a double carriage end dogger for optimum cutting precision.
It is estimated that Roseburg's log to lumber conversion ratio will increase 4Vo. All trimming and sorting is done automatically. The sorter/stacker sorts by grade, size and length at a rate of 185 studs per minute.
"Roseburg engineers, in partnership with several sawmill equipment manufacturers, have created a facility that will produce over 360 million bd. ft. annually," said Rick Saunders, plant manager.
The facility increases Roseburg's production capacity 75Vo, making it one of the largest stud production facilities in North America.
Roseburg produces green Douglas fir, K.D. Doug fir, K.D. hem-fir, K.D.
lodgepole, pine (ESLP) in lx4,2x4, 2x6,4x4,4x6 stud sizes. Grades are C & Btr., Premier, Select Struc. , #1 & Btr., #2 & Btr., Std. & Btr., Stud Grade.
Logging Resumes In Montana
Delayed by nearby wildfires, Plum Creek Timber Co., Seattle, Wa., has resumed logging in western Montana where the company has 1.1 million acres of unburned forests.
"We're going to get everything up and running as quickly and safely as possible," said Tom Ray, general manager for Northwest resources in Columbia Falls. Loggers began sal- vaging lumber in September on the 45,000 acres of timberland that has burned since July, in which the company lost 37o of its 1.4 million acres in the region.
In August, loggers were pulled off the land because of fire danger, and Plum Creek was forced to close its mills in Pablo and Kasanka when they ran out of logs.
"We have foresters and wildlife biologists looking at the bumed areas right now," Ray said. "Then we'll formulate our plans on how best to salvage what has burned."
Once deliveries resume and inventories build to sufficient levels, the idled mills will be reopened.
