ldaho Institution Begins Liquidation
Following a liquidation sale that began last month, Irrigators Lumber, Caldwell. Id.. will close its doors after 83 years.
The 5,000-sq. ft. store and lumberyard has been for sale since June. This summer the partners made the decision to close, after giving up the Ace Hardware brand earlier this year because of the costs associated with being a franchise.
Even if the economy revived, part owner Bob Crawford said construction of the big boxes in Nampa foretold more competition that would make it tough for the small company to compete.
"Before 9lll, we were going into the winter with some very nice jobs for new homes. But when 9lll hit, the builders backed off, and our sales went way down to nothing," said Crawford.
Kent Bacon, who owns a small part of the business, said through the years customers who enjoyed the small-town atmosphere of the store would travel from Utah, eastern Idaho and California to shop there.
Opened in 1920, the store mainly catered to home builders and do-ityourselfers, but also canied the usual assortment of hardware goods, and a small gift department that carried candles, throw rugs and collectibles.
Depot Upgrades SecuritY
Home Depot is installing digital video surveillance in all its retail locations over the next few months to reduce shrinkage and deter fraud.
The new technology will enable the retailer to store digital images and e-mail them to law enforcement agencies. The security cameras can also help deter and investigate cases of identity theft.
"We are employing [this] technology to meet a number of imPortant objectives," said Marvin Ellison, Home Depot's v.p.-loss prevention.
One of the objectives is "generating business intelligence that can be used to improve merchandising," Ellison said.
The surveillance technologY will be provided by Verint Systems, a Mel-ville, N.Y., supplier of softwarebased solutions for communications interception, video security and business intelligence.
Home Depot expects to install the new video cameras throughout its 1,576 stores.

Panel Questions ITC Ruling
A NAFTA panel has given the U.S. International Trade Commission 100 days to back up its ruling that
Canadian softwood imports harm the American timber industry.

The five-member panel-three American, two Canadian-issued a unanimous binding ruling Sept. 5, saying thar the ITC failed to follow its own rules, ignored evidence, and based its forecast of a threat on "considerable speculation and conjecture."
Although Canadians and softwood tariff opponents hailed the ruling as a major victory, U.S. Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports spokesman John Ragosta said it would be easy for the ITC to provide the NAFTA panel with evidence.
Both parties also hold out hoPe the matter can be nesotiated.

Construction began Aug. I on the $4 million project that is located near the company's headquarters and is expected to be completed April 2004.
