Hardwoods On Tour
(Continued from page I3) of clear grades has diminished substantially in recent years. This is due in part to an abnormally high volume of exports of clear grades. Another important factor is that virgin forests have largely been exhausted. Trees used nowadays as a source of good furniture wood are generally second or third growth timber. This by nature, and as a result of shorter management rotations, contains more character marks.
"But these character marks-bird pecks, knots, mineral spots, pin worm holes and the like-are not really defects although they are called that in the technical jargon. They are what nature has put there. They have no adverse effect whatsoever on the performance or durability of the wood."
The exhibit derives its name, Selectorama Showroom. from an Association publication, Fine Hardwoods Selectorama, a leading authoritative reference on hardwood uses and characteristics. In its recently published new edition the book describes more than 300 species and contains 155 full

Among the pieces in the exhibit are two walnut chests identical in design and dimension-one of character marked walnut and the other of clear walnut. Other furniture pieces on display are two large 4-drawer chests, one in knotty oak, the other in character marked walnut;a table in knotty ash; a love seat in wormy maple and a floor lamp in the same wood; and a lingerie chest in gummy cherry.
The 40 plywood panels are on two carousels containing 20 panels each. Ten species are represented and there are four panels of each. One panel of each species is unfinished while three identical panels are finished in three different currently popular color tones ranging from ligllt brown to deep brown.
Character marked woods represented are red and white oak, pecan, walnut, cherry, ash, elm, mahogany and other fine hardwoods.

Many times hardwood lumber must be paid for60-90 daysbefore it is ready to sell. A scarcity during a sellers market makes carload purchasing much more difficult than carload selling. 814 oak air dried to 30% takes a slow 14-20 days in the kiln to protect against honeycomb. All of these time factors add cost.
(3) Dry storage means higher class buildings and sheds.
(4) Also adding to costs are downgrade which occurs during the kiln drying process due to checks, honeycomb, twisting, cupping, crooks and bowing. Proper sticking and drying prevents some of this downgrade.

AvailabilityFrom the numerous calls received by hardwood wholesalers in the area regarding purchase of small orders of hardwood, it is clear that more retail yards should learn about and stock some basic hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, birch and ash. Pick one person in the yard to make a personal visit to your wholesaler. Ask him to show you hardwood and discuss the handling, measuring and stocking ofthem for retail sale. It can bring both satisfaction of supplying a need for your customer and added orofit.
