Lumber City Revamps Store

Seven-unit chain Lumber City has overhauled its largest store, changing the Santa Clarita (Valencia), Ca., location over to HWI's Do-it Center concept and renaming it The California Do-it Center.

If the experiment is successful, the other stores will be switched over to the new name and fomnt.

The first Do-it Center o open in the Los Angeles area, it underwent a fourmonth remodel to show off new inventory, new landscaping and a new look. "We have chosen to take this store and go to an updated home improvement store that will be competitive in temrs of quality and price," said ownerJess Ruf.

A grand reopening was held June 1l-13, featuring a ribbon cutting ceremony, rides on a 45-foot Ferris wheel, houdy prize drawings and free gifts, popcorn, balloons and lemonade.

Ruf said that the decision to reformat was not influenced by next year's opening of a nearby Home Depot His wholesale company, Neiman-Reed Lumber Co., Van Nuys, Ca., is unaffected by the retail chain's changes.
