Public Favors Species Act Reform

The public wants fewer envirorunental regulations. With nearly 9,000 readers responding to USA Weekcnd's "Face-off on the Environment " 62Vo agteed with an argument for Endangered Species Act refomr.

The Sunday supplement presented viewpoints of Earth Day founder Denis Hayes, who favored more protection for endangered species and a federal push for fuel efficient cars, and William Perry Pendley, a proactive attorney on behalf of land use rights, who argued for refonn of the Endangered Species Act, wise management of forests to provide specifically for wood products and curbing environmental litigation.

Calling on a 900 number, 8,914 people agreed nearly two to one that the environment does not supersede all other earthly concerns. Hayes received approval from only 387o.

Pendley summed up the results, "If Clinton has a mandate, it is to stengthen the economy, not to be a slave to the sky-is-falling, mankind-is-a-cancer-on-the-planet rhetoric of environmental group6."

Billboards Promote Good Forestry

Sacranento, Ca., has been selected for California Forest Products Commission's first major outdoor billboard education canpaign.

The four month caupaign, which began in June, will use a raccoon and bear cubs to promote the message that California forest practices ensure that wildlife habitat protection is part of wise use and management of the scate's forests. Two billboard ads will coordinate with tv, radio and print advertising.
