Bogus Bankruptcy Notice Girculated

In troubling times for Southern California lumber dealers, wholesalers were not surprised last month to receive notice of another retailer slipprng into bankruprcy. But the retailer was.

Escondido Lumber Co., Escondido, Ca., was shocked to learn someone had mailed a phony bankruptcy notice to scores of its creditors, suppliers and customers.

"It was a very creative document, put together clearly with the intent to assassinate our character," said secfetarylreasurer Patti Geib. "But someone familiar with banlauptcy notices would have recognized immediately that it wasn't authentic."

The law firm listed on the notice denied filing it and confirmed that nunerous discrepancies prove its obvious falsity.

Yet the perpetrator lnew the company rather intimately, since the document contains Escondido's correct tfl(payef ID Number, lists as trust€e a long-gone employee and was sent to every one of their vendors.

Headlined "Notice of Bankruptcy'' in bold type, the notice charged that

Escondido misused funds from the employees' profit sharing plan to pay off creditors and that anyone found to have received such funds was required to return them to the bankruptcy trustee. Geib denied the allegations.

The letters were mailed in midJune, postmarked from San Diego, Ca., and stamped "Company Mattef' in red, but with no renrrn address.

Escondido Lumber has posted a reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits and turned the matter over to the U.S. Disrict Attorney.

"This notice was cleady an attempt to disrupt our business and perhaps drive our customers away," Geib said. She suspects it may be related to Escondido Lumber's curent litigation with Geib Lumber. The nvo corporations separated in September and many problems, including death thleats, have followed, she said.

Or, she said, the prankster may be a disgruntled worker. Escondido Lumber was downsized in 1990 and some long-time employees were released.

"What type of person would do such a thing, preying on people like this?" said Geib. "Times are hard enough already."

Harvest Plan Memo Leaked

With release of an official timber policy plan lagging behind tle promised June 2 date, a memo to Pres. Clinton from one of the Ecosystem Management Assessment Team scientists, claiming timber available for harvest is less than thought, was leaked to the press.

K. Norrran Johnson wrote that forest plans overestimate the timber sales progams by as much as 4O4o. He al' leged that forest plans assumed roadless and other controversial areas would be available for harvest but in reality are not. Acres available for management are the centnal issue surrounding timber sale program levels. The harvest goes down proportionately with land base restrictions. Many in the industry thought the memo was deliberately leaked as an attempt to justify the low timber sales numben associated with options pro(Please tum to page 30)

Tape Takes Forest Story To Public

Members of the wood products industry are using the cassette tape "I'm A Tree" and its presentation kit to help students and adults understand the forest products community and its stewardship of our nation's forest lands.

Over 6,000 copies of the song have been distributed by Norman Munay and the music division of U*C Coatings corp. in the past six months. The newly scripted renewable forest story presentation kit is designed for the elementary school level, but can be adapted for adult groups.

Kits can be obtained for $25 postpaid ftom U*C Music Division, P.O. Box 1046, Buffalo, N.Y. 14215. Tapes are $2.7s.

Consumer Awareness Push Begins

The wood preserving indusEy is conducting an intense communications campaign to improve retailer and wholesaler participation in the industry's Voluntary Consumer Awareness Program (VCAP).

Originating in 1986, this program provides neated wood purchasers with Consumer Information Sheets outlining benefits, use and handling procedures for working with the product. "Retailers and wholesalers need to fully understand the importance and responsibilities of their roles in the voluntary consumer awareness program and the need to tnain andmotivate sales personnel to participate," explained Bill Crossman, American Wood Preservers Institute product acceptance committee chairman.

AWPI asked all wood preserving industry members to contact retailers and wholesalers across the country in June to make them aware of the need !o distribute Consumer [nformation Sheets to each treated wood purchaser. Since the program's inception, participation of wood preservative formulators and wood treaters has remained neuly 1007o, but due to high personnel tumover rates and incorrect perceptions, participation and awareness rates among retailers and wholesalers have declined.

The program is one of several measures AWPI detailed to the EPA last fall to show their intent to improve the distribution of Consumer Information Sheets to consumers. Results of industry research to detetmine the type of store signs that best attract attention and prompt treated wood purchasers to request a Consumer Infonnation Sheet also have been released.

International Hardwood Program

The International Hardwood Products Association's CURE (Conservation, Utilization, Reforestation, E<lucation) Committee is expanding its worldwide efforts to preserve tropical forests.

To increase mahogany growth and encourage timber trade from sustainable managed sources, CURE will sponsor collection of viable seeds from mahrre trees for planting on degraded agricultural lands in Central and South America. Popularly known as "Johnny Mahoganyseed," the program will be supervised in each country by a plan coordinator. The first to take part, Bolivia and Brazil will serve as models for other nations.
