Enviros Disavow Tree Spiking

Radical environmentalists Earth

First! denounced tree spiking as a way to protest forest management at a recent rally at Louisiana-Pacific, Samoa, Ca.

Although the activists said theY are against tree spiking because it is directed at loggers and millworkers and not the timber corporations, LP's Shep Tucker speculates the group made the statement to distance itself from any expected violence arising during a planned summerlong protest.

Dealer Adapts, Grows

Healdsburg Lumber Co., Healdsburg, Ca., realizes you can't stand still and remain competitive.

It recently added Dry Creek Millwork & Planing Co. (formerly Sauers Forest Products), which remanufactures lumber for moulding, siding and pre-cut frame packages.

"The motivation to buy the millwork company is to put us that much closer to the source of materials," owner Eric Ziedrich said. "Timber is becoming a much scarcer commodity, being logged and machined by fewer and fewer companies."

Other changes at the group of companies include a redesigned yard area and expanded electrical department at Healdsburg Lumber's retail store, a new spray booth and computer-aided cabinet design system at Healdsburg Cabinet & Millwork Co., and a planned expansion at Healdsburg Door & Sash.

New Hardwood Supplier

Taylor-Ramsey West is the name of the new western subsidiary of Taylor-Ramsey Corp., recentlY opened by LarryKnox, veteran Southern California hardwood lumberman.

Situated on property leased from Mariners Forest Products at their Santa Ana, Ca., facility, the new firm is backed by the parent corporation's own forests, sawmills, kilns, concentration yards, planing mills and dimension plants. Taylor-Ramsey is based in Lynchburg, Va.

The western operation offers hardwood lumber, molding, millwork, laminated parts and various other hardwood items, according to Knox. Sales are to wholesale distributors only.

Whatever happened to . . .?

By Matt Moulder

What Ever Happened To The Cood Old Days when it tclok the g,ood part of a dav to touch base with all of your lumber suppliers These days the iob can be wraDped up in a couple of 'hours. The number of sawmills that make shoo and better lumber has decreased considerably over the past ten years and the rate at which mills are throwing, in the towel is increasing at an alarmins rate.

necihtlv we read about Weyerhaeuser permanently laying off 390 peoole in their'Klamath Falls sawmill. The week before the San Francisco Chronicle ran an article on various Louisiana Pacific mills either going down or cuttine back personnel. lust prior was the announcement that Roseburg I umber Co]was ciosins down their huge Red Bluff lumber mill permanently. No less than l1 oine ihoo and better- mills have closed their doors recently. The obvious reason foi-all of the cutbacks is the reduction in timber being made available bv the Forest service and the rapidly escalating price of what little timber is currently being offered.

True, some of the"large producers have increased output, but this increased production is almost entirely in the small log categorv The decrease in the number of mills processing old growth timber and the decrease in the amount of old growth produced by the mills remaining ,is alarming and will soon show up in the price ol products made lrom olo n-*tn]nt some ooint the devastation caused by the elimination of wood BroJultr iobs will 'nor be confined to sawmill towns, but will be experienced by communities in all parts of the nation; communities that are the home blse for firms making, wood windows, doors, furniture items, toys, mouldines, picture frames 5nd so on. These are all products that are dependent uoon'old q,rowth timber for their perpetuation. They will soon be priced out oi the piciure due to the high price of the lumber that they are made out ol if the dtewards of our federal timber continue to steer the same course.

The ironic part of this entire scenario is that the exit of wood products from the marketolace would bring about an increase in pollution causing industries such ai steel, plastic and'aluminum and a corresponding increase in minine and oil explorition. This would seem to be counter productive to what th"e environmentalists are striving to achieve. Oil and ore are not renewable; trees are!
