Ex-Manager Sues Pay 'N Pak

Pay 'N Pak Stores, Kent, Wa.. and company chairman/ceo John Markley are being sued by a former district manager who alleges he was forced out of the firm after being promised the presidency.

Kirk Knapp's suit claims Pay 'N Pak "abruptly required (him) to relocate from Hawaiito Washington to temporarily assume the responsibilities of company president. Shortly thereafter, Pay 'N Pak promised (him) permanent employment as an executive or senior vice president, a base salary exceeding $120,000, and a 2o/o corporate performance bonus. The company also promised that an impending change in management would not affect (tris) joU security."

Chairman David Heerensperger and president Jerry Marlow resigned in August and Markley joined the firm. A 16-year veteran of the firm, Knapp was promoted to vice president, but resigned the position in December. He now works for Heerensperger's new company, Eagle Hardware & Garden, Kent.

Hardwood Distributors

Longevity seems a mark of hardwood groups as the Pacific Coast Wholesale Hardwood Distributors Association proved at its 67th annual meeting, held this year at the Westin La Paloma Hotel, Tucson, Az.

Seven sectional reports on business conditions in the U.S. plus one on western Canada were upbeat and optimistic. with all areas reporting continued good business. The sole exception was Arizona, still suffering from the savings and loan crisis that has produced such a negative impact upon the state's building business.

Changes in the foreign and domestic markets and their effects upon each other were explored in an illustrated talk by George Barrett, editor and owner of the Weekly Hardwood Review. He noted that the chip business was up, affecting hardwood supply, due to a number of new southern mills. Barrett said distributors should become involved in just-in-time delivery activities, noting that those who do can increase their profits.

Randy Holt, Motorola, Inc., spoke on credit, stressing that teamwork, cooperation and communication between different areas within a business are essential for profitable credit management.

Depot Robbers Shoot Guard

Two gunmen assailed an armored car guard carrying cash into Home Depot, Van Nuys, Ca., shooting him in the hand and fleeing with a bag of money, according to Los Angeles police.

With guns drawn, the robbers followed the guard through the store March 23 and when he refused to surrender the money, they shot him, according to an unidentified employee. An unidentified suspect was later arrested, police said.
