Software Shootout at NAWLA

Nine software vendors will demonstrate lumber distribution software in the "Great Software Shootout" at the North American Wholesale Lumber Association's 102nd annual meeting, Apnl23-26 at Marriott's Camelback Inn, Scottsdale, Az.

The head-to-head presentations will take place from 8:45 to 11:45 Monday, April 25, followed by private, detailed demonstrations in the afternoon and tableop exhibits during a Contact Session on Tuesday. During the initial presentations, a video projection ofthe actual on-screen images will give attende€s a first-hand look at the products at work.

"If a wholesaler does not yet have distribution software, or if it's tiree or more years old, he had bett€r look ino getting a system now if he wants to remain competitive," maintains l,amar B. Logan, president of Logan Lumber Co., Tampa, Fl., moderator of the demonstration program. "The Shootout will be a perfect opportunity for one-stop shopping because the leading vendors will all be in one pliace."

The NAWLA annual meeting will include a number of bu3iness, educa- tional and social opportunities. Two Contact Sessions (1-2 p.m. Monday and24 p.m. Tuesday) will feature 60 lumber mills, remanners and affiliatedservice companies in addition to the software vendors participating in the Shootout Eric Canton, Canton Lumber Co., is the 1994 convention coordinator.

G-P Sales To Portland

Georgia-Pacific has completed the first phase of its plan to base all West Coast sawmill sales in Portland, Or.

Randy James, generd lumber sales manager, western wood products manufacturing division, has moved to Portland from Martell, Ca., to be responsible for marketing sfategy, forecasting and sales for all lumber operations.

J. D. Deisher and Darrel A. Hanson, sales managers for green and dry dimension from Philomath, Or., and Martell mills, will also be based in Portland. Donna R. Johnson has relocated from Atlanta Ga., as adurinistrative assistant to James.

Georgia-Pacific operates nine production facilities, two distribution centers, two chip-shipping facilities, a forestry research center with nursery and two forest resource offices in Oregon.

Northwest Education Meeting

Owners, managers and key personnel will attend the Western Building Material Association's all industry education conference April 22-?t4, Dolbletree Suites, Southcenter, Seattle, Wa.

Mark Mayberry, The Mayberry Group, Atlanta, Ga., will open the conference Saturday, April 23, with a morning workshop "Lighting a Fire Under Your Team and Yourself."

Robert F. Legg, Temperate Forest Foundation, Beaverton, Or., will discuss "The Forest - the Social, Economic and Ecological Issues - Today and Tomorrow" after lunch. Ken Marson, WBMA president, Marson and Marson Lumber, Leavenworth, Wa., will follow with a briefing on "Our Canadian Trading Partners." Discussion roundtables are planned. "Positively Outrageous Service" will be the subject of a marketing strategy workshop conducted Sunday by Mayberry. Roundtable discussions will conclude the program.

Sid Johnson, Nor-Cal Moulding Co., Marysville, Ca., was elected president of the Wood Moulding & Millwork Producers Association at the group's annual meeting Feb. 12 in Maui, Hi.

Feds Divert Oregon Forest Money

At least $5.4 million designated for reforestation in Oregon has been spent on staff salaries, furniture and roof repairs, an Interior Department inspecor general reported.

Timber revenue lost by the failure to properly fertilize, thin and maintain the forests in question could run between $36 million and $200 million, the report noted.

Tremont Nail Celebrates 175 Years

Tremont Nail Co., the oldest nail manufacturer in the U.S., still occupies the Warehan, Ma, site where Issac and Jared Pratt started the business in 1819. The property is now a national historic site.

The 175 year old oompany manufactures 20 pattems of steel cut nails for the commercial and restoration markets. Hardened masonry and hardened floor nails are the most popular. The oldest pasern, a decoative wrcught head, is a favorite for restoration.

W. H. Maze Co., Peru, Il., parent of Maze Nails, the oldest wire nail manufacturer in the country, purchased Tremont in 1989.

Associations To Promote Wood

An industry-wide communications program by the Wood Products Promotion Council (WPPC) will promote environmental benefits of wood.

American Plywood, American Forest and Paper, Southern Forest Products and Western Wood Products associations comprise WPPC. The communications carpaign will be based on WWPA's WoodWorks progmm.

"This is an exciting step fonilard for the solid wood industry," said APA marketing v.p. Dennis Hardman, a WPPC steering committee member. "For the first time, we will be talking to our respective members'customers with a unified industry voice about the common environmental attributes of all wood products."

Retailers, wholesalers, builders, remodelers, engineers, architects and industrial customers will be targeted. A oneday symposium is in the offing at a date to be announced and the first of a series of statewide builder seminars have been held in Jacksonville and Orlando, Fl., by APA and the Florida Wood Council.

Remodeling Spending Increases

After a dramatic remodeling activity increase nationwide in 1993, the possibility of remodeling expenditures overtaking new constuction spending by 2000 is in the offing.

Total residential improvements and repair expenditures for second quarter 1993 reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $112.4 billion, up 16%o over frst quarter figures, according to U.S. Commerce Department figures. Spending was $70.8 billion for improvements, a 27Vo increase over the previous quarter and the highest in six years, and M1.6 billion for maintenance and repain.
