Day Labor Sites Cause Grief
Several home centers in the metropolitan Los Angeles, Ca., area are working with county and city officials to solve the problem of day laborers congregating at ttre stores seekrng work.
Management of a HomeBase at Slauson and Fairfax Avenues in Los Angeles is cooperating with County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke to set up restrooms and facilities for day laborers at the store or close by.
Monrovia city officials are working with Home Depot to create a day laborer waiting area on a parking lot across the street from the store. A makeshift employment center would operate out of a city-owned failer.
Immigration and Naturalization Service raids in Monrovia in February arrested 32 illegal aliens from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. If undocumented workers are hired from sanctioned locations, the employer, not the home center, city or county, could face penalties, an INS official said.
Sierra Madre and Pasadena also are seeking ways to deal with complaints about sites where day laborers gather. Los Angeles County is considering an ordinance banning day laborers in unincorporated areas.
Three Injured In Home
Store engineers are seeking the cause of an accident, involving falling boxes of ceiling tiles at a Fullerton, Ca., Home Depot.
A woman, a six-year-old boy believed to be her grandson and a male family member were taken to local medical centers with minor injuries, firefighters said.
