Hordwqre Show Sets Record

The 18th annual Western States Hardware-Housewares-Paint & Garden Supply Show held in San Francis:o, set new buying and attendance records. Buyers from throughout the West caused sales to jump 17.4 percent over the 1966 show, to a total o{ 8250,062.

Exhibitors we re on hand in increased numbers for the February show due partly to the tragic Chicago housewares show fire which prevented many buyers from {illing their inventories. Booth space was up l1 percent over 1966, making this tlre biggest show of its kind outside of New York.

Judging from the amount of volume buying, the retail bu. siness is obviously optimistic over the remainder oI 1967.

The natural charm oI Redwood

No forest products are more prized for both beauty and performance than those made from redwood. Nature endowed redwood with a rich, warm elegance to which she added durability, dimensional stability, weather resistance and superior insulation against heat, cold and noise.

Redwood is the only species of wood that if left unfinished will weather gracefully, or it may be stained, painted, or bleached to any hue or color. In fire resistance, "the absence of resins and gums in redwood makes it a fire-resistant wood," according to U.S. Dept. of Commerce Bulletin #171. And, in thermal insulation, s/s" of redwood is the equivalent of 3.6" of brick, 9.4" of stucco, and 8.6" of concrete. Now a new dimension has been added to this remarkable building material

PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood, a completely new product, is now available in a wide variety of attractive patterns and two distinctive textures.

PALCO has combined all of the natural attributes of redwood with the extra strength, economy and advantages of large plywood panels to produce PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood. These combine to make quality sidings for any exterior. For interiors, the rich hue, the grain and textures of PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood add charm to any room.

PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood is available

Clear Heart Saw-Textured-The PALCO premium grade-a rough-sawn texture, appropriate to both contemporary or conventional design for exteriors and interiors. Clear All Heart Redwood, knot free-preferred for its beauty and durabilityis used in the textured face veneers.

A-Clear Brush-Textured-Wire-brushed to accent the natural rich tones of redwood grain. Face veneers are clear, knot-free; include some sapwood. Recommended particularly for interiors.

Select Saw-Textured-A rough-sawn panel combining the beauty of redwood with the economy of face veneers that include sapwood and filled knot holes.

The beauty of the textured redwood is further enhanced by combining texture with line through the use of grooved patterns. The parallel grooves create striking effects of highlight and shadow. Each of the above three grades are available with Texture 1:1 1 grooves, 3/8" wide and th" deep, spaced 4",8" , ol 4" and 12" , and also in the popular f nverted Batten pattern in which grooves V+" deep by 1t/2" wide are spaced 12".

The two Saw-Textured grades are offered with plain ungrooved faces, and matching Palco redwood lumber battens are available.

All PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood is exterior-type, bonded with waterproof adhesives.

Clear Heart and Select grades have a factory-applied exterior water repellent, providing the ideal surface for natural weathering, staining, painting, or bleaching.

PALCO Redwood Plywood is manufactured to specifications of U. S. Product Standard P.S. 1-66, of American Plywood Association's 303 Specialty Sidings, and complies with F.H.A. standards. Each piece bears the new California Redwood Association stamp of approval and the D.F.P.A. grade trademark.

For Exteriors

The variety of textures, panels, and grades provide quality exteriors for all types of construction-from the most expensive custom homes, to vacation cottages. ldeal also for commercial buildings where beauty of wood and ease of maintenance is required. Saw-textured panels will hold finishes up to twice as long as smooth surfaces, while masking abrasions and scratches.

PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywoods serve as both sheathing and siding, without necessity of corner bracing. Apply 3/a" or 5/a" grooved panels direct to 16,, o.c. studs-ungrooved 5/e" panels to 24,, o.c. studs. ff sheathing is used, supports may be spaced 24,, o.c. Place panel edges over studs or solid blocking.

Gap square-edge panels Va" and caulk or cover with battens. Caulking not necessary at shiplapped edges. For exteriors, the use of corrosion-resistant nails is especially important; use stainless, aluminum, or hot-dipped galvanized. For 3/e" panels, 6d siding or casing nails are recommended; 8d for 5/a,, panels. Space nails 6" at panel edges and 12,, on intermediate studs. Drive flush but do not set. Colored corrosionresistant nails are available at many lumber and building material dealers.

The above general recommendations are in accordance with the A.P.A. and comply with the F.H.A., the major regional building codes, and most local codes. PALCO Redwood lumber battens 2V2,, wide,8,,g, and 10'lengths are available in either lYgz', or2/tt, lhicknesses with a saw-textured face and water-repellent treated.

For Interiors

For interior applications, PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood is winning wide approval among architects and designers. Patterns and textures impossible to obtain with thin hardwood veneers are available in PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood at a cost much less than that of hardwood panels.

Saw-textured surfaces provide a soft, pleasing texture and tend to conceal scratches and scuff marks. Brush-textured faces accent the redwood grain. The brushing action creates highlights of color and pattern and imparts a hardening to the surface.
