I?ALOO-LOC REDWOOD Long in Lengths. Short in Costs.
Palco-Loc is manulactured from Palco's architectural quality Certified Kiln Dried Calilornia Redwood, finger-jointed and electronically end-glued to produce durable, long-length pieces. With the exterior waterproof adhesive, Palco-Loc complies with FHA requirements for exterior and interior uses (non-structural).
PALCO.LOC REDWOOD HAS THESE SPECIAL ADVANTAGES
Long lengths: made to customers'specified lengths up to 20'or longer. Also many products are inventoried in 16-20' random length packages for prompt shipment.
Made in variety of products: fascia, S4S, patterns, bevel sidings, etc. Particular size advantages: 1" nominal is 3/e" net; wide widths available up through 12'i
Superior quality Clear All Heart vertical grain: the grade in this photograph-is the highest grade of redwood and unmatched by other species. Clear mixed grain also available. Both grades have no knots, resin, or pitch, providing superior paint and stain retention.
Stays straight and flat: even in the widest widths and longest lengths. Thus easier to apply and in place has excellent dimensional stability-no cupping or crooking.
Economical: is considerably less costly than solid long-length pieces. And the convenient lengths reduce application costs and trim waste.
Lengths: Specified lengths up to 20'; longer lengths available on special orders. Mill inventories are carried in the popular 16' to 20' length packages.
Sizes:
Fascia: (a) with double plow to receive th" or 3/e" softil'.
1" x 6"-Pattern #588
1" x 8"-Pattern #589 (b) 1" x 6" and 1" x 8" also available with single plow tor Vc" or 3/e" soffit.
S4S: l" nominal (3/q" nelthickness) and11/q" nominal (11/ro" net thickness) available in nominal widths 2" through 12". 2" nominal (1s/e" or 11h" net thickness) in nominal widths 2" through 8".
Patterns: Same sizes as S4S. Available in exterior and interior patterns of Tongue & Groove, Shiplap, Cove Shiplap, or Channel Shiplap (per California Redwood Association's Pattern Book). Other patterns may be available on special order.

Bevef s/a" x 1O", Pattern #331, reversible;s1o" x 6"& Siding: S" available on special orders.
Fascia:
The superior dimensional stability of this fascia makes it stay straight, smooth and flat. The fascia assures that soffits can be easily applied and will permanently maintain the position. The plowed grooves reduce soffits' installation costs and eliminate necessity for moulding.
Clear Mixed Grain
Grades: Clear All Heart Vertical Grain and Clear Mixed Grain in Fascia, S4S and Patterns. Bevel Siding in Vertical Grain only.
Finger-Joints: Precision jointed and electronically glued with waterproof adhesive in non-structural joints (non-structural means not load-bearing) and complies with FHA requirements for exterior or interior use.
Bevel Siding: The long lengths reduce application costs, and fit on most wall areas with very few butt joints. Has redwood's inherent advantages of superior finishability, dimensional stability, decay and insect resistance, fire resistance, etc. Corner boards are also Palco-Loc products.
Deck Building
(Continued from page 26) should not be neglected. Talk seems to motivate people.
A Saturday clinic makes a good kickoff for the contest. A few local celebrities, refreshments, an audio visual presentation and a how-tobuild-a-deck talk by a contractor will make it an event. Demonstration decks in your yard or parking lot will attract attention and show the structural elements and proper grades of redwood.
The local press should be alerted and invited to the kick-off as well as to the judging. Be sure to provide them with the names of winners and photos of the decks. Get the permission of the homeowners involved and avoid specific addresses of owners.
Prizes are not the main incentive, but they should be adequate. Redwood lumber gift certificates from $500 to $1000 have been successful. Other firms have offered trips to Mexico, Hawaii or the Bahamas. Make all entrants feel appreciated. A small gift, such as a plant, for each contestant will make evervone feel good about the contest.
Judging should take place on one day. Semi-finalists can be selected from the photos, but the finalists should be selected after on-site judging. The jury should include a deck builder, a landscape architect and, if possible, a local celebrity. A dealer should avoid getting personally involved with the judging.
Before setting up a contest, the California Redwood Association suggests a dealer should check it out with his lawyer, who can advise on protection against standard liabilities.

As outlined by the association, the deckbuilding contest offers room for a dealer to exercise his own creativity and sense of his market. Stand ready to provide advice, literature, La Belle cassette presentations and any other needed back-up.
Bait to Catch Shoplifters
Additional security guards and extra closed circuit cameras are conventional, expensive and relatively inefficient ways to deter the shoplifter. However, some stores are coming up
Manufacturers And Wholesalers
with a better mousetrap-uh, shoplifter's trap.
All the measures produce the illusion of a high security store with little or no cost.
Two of the most effective measures are the fake guard and the staged arrest ploys. In the fake guard ploy, if an employee spots a potential shoplifter, he gets on the store's P.A. system and says, "Security guard to aisle number 2 immediately." If the suspect is indeed a shoplifter, he will leave the area at once. Also, other would-be shoplifters in the store who hear the announcement will leave the store for better hunting grounds.
In the staged arrest ploy, a store manager arrests one of his employees, who is pretending to be a shoplifter. The arrest must be highly visible, usually at the entrance to the store near the checkout lines. Shoplifters usually will not "shop" at stores where shoplifters are apprehended.
Other low cost, conventional security measures include two-way mirrors. The store doesn't have to keep an employee behind the glass to monitor the customers, because the customers will never know.
