First, I wish a belated Happy New Year to all our readers and a successful 2006 for your companies. I hope you all had time to relax with your families.

In November, I had the opportunity to make my first visit to China. For most of us older ones. our thoughts of China are based on the gray days of Mao. I can report that those days are far away. First, I would say that China is a beautiful and interesting country to visit, particularly if you enjoy history. We found a great sense of curiosity and a great deal of friendliness. especially from young children, who are all learning English it seems. We rvere welcomed by everyone in the street with smiles and an earnest and energetic "hello".

On landing in Shanghai. I could not but be impressed rvith the nerv airport (which after five years is already too small. and is being doubled in size). the bullet train that speeds alongside the nerv freervay. the nerv major bridges, and on entering the city the amazing number of skyscrapers (norv 4,000 in total, twice as many as New York, and grorving weekly). most rvith beautiful architecture at their top. The skyline is full of cranes rvith many. many more buildings under construction. From the communist time warp of l0 to l5 years ago, you rvill see building and modernization that is quite extraordinary.

This was a pattern we saw in every city and every village, although with-

out perhaps the same aesthetics. In particular. along the Yangtze River. tvhere a nerv canal and dam have been built. rve rvitnessed the complete relocation of cities large and small to avoid the rising rvaters that will be completed by 2009. The new power plant. rvhen fully operational. rvill provide one tenth of the entire porver needed in China. It rvas interesting to contemplate that if rve had tried to build the same project in the U.S.. rve rvould be debating it for the next 50 years rvith environmental intervention at every turn. Yet from start to finish it rvill take l8 years to complete. One-and-a-half million people are being relocated by giving them nerv homes at no cost. Horvever. on the minus side. levels of pollution appear out of control.

Everyrvhere you look there are nerv apartments. stores. bridges. roads. railrvay stations, airports. tunnels. cities. etc.. etc. You get the picture.

I have to say I came back conflicted by rvhat I sarv. On one hand. you can now get your Starbucks at the airport. and a McDonalds or KFC. and I even sarv the Wal-Mart-our gift to the east. But. rvhat I also sarv was that rve have transported our technology. our manufacturing capacity. and our machinery in an attempt to gain limited access to a 1.5 billion consumer market. It is still difficult to do in business in China rvhich. make no mistake. still has a communist government (and by the way. most people seemed happy rvith). As rve learned. you can think rvhat you like. but you do rvhat the government tells you.

The rise oI China as an economic porverhouse suggests this is the rise of a nerv dynasty. That may be hard to take seriously rvhen you still see some horrible living conditions in many places. Horvever. per capita income has tripled in the last generation. and 300 million people have been eased out of poverty. The Chinese government has seemingly also found a way to

keep a tough hold on their people communist style and yet foster true western-style entrepreneurism. China norv has l0 billionaires. up from three a year ago. If you go to large cities like Shanghai and Beijing. you rvill see entrepreneurial businesses thriving like you cannot imagine.

The scary part of this for me and for everyone else in the West should be the current speed of change. China is grorving at a rate of almost l0Vc ayear. and it is estimated that it has the capability to grorv by 7-87c annually for years to come. With a trade surplus of $850 billion (compared to our 5400 billion deficit). they have the money to continue their grorvth.

While rve have already seen many of our lorv-end manufacturing businesses move to China. the country is norv moving from lorv-end. lorv-cost manufacturing to state-of-the-art manufacturing. All the major economies of the rvorld are scratching their heads as to horv they rvill compete in the future.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, I think most of us thought that the U.S. rvas the only superporver. but it is estimated that by the middle of the century China's economy rvill surpass the U.S.'s. As their porver grows. they rvill become both allies and countenveights to U.S. power at the expense of Japan and Europe. The question of rvhether lve engage them or contain them is a valid one.

The emer_eence of China should be a rvake-up call to everyone in this country. as every one of us is affected. Yes. rve may get lorv-cost. Chinesemade clothing. toys and electronics at Wal-Mart. But China is also buying large volumes of fuel and rarv materials such as concrete. steel and plastic. That increases the costs of rvhat rve manufacture and buy here. rvhich in tum rvill lead to lorver rvages. and ours becoming a service economy as we continue to lose our manufacturing base. China's mix of cheap Iabor. a huge domestic market. an emerging middle class. and their outreach for capital promotes a strong argument that they have to be targeted as an equal trading partner. not the lop-sided situation rve have today. China in particular has to go a lot farther in properly valuing its currency against the dollar. estimated at l5-4O% less than it should be.

If rve do not rvake up. rve risk becoming the nerv "Old Europe." desperately trying to slorv the march of progress in a vain effort to retain past leadership of the rvorld's economy.

A trcets insides forctell the performanee of lumber used outside

fN THE cross-section of a tree lies a lstory. It tells of the tree's past. but also portends the future of lumber sawn from the tree.

As most every school kid knows, annual rings indicate the age of a tree. The rings also provide evidence for conditions the tree experienced during its life-years of good growth, drought years, fires, competitive stresses.

But those rings are more than a look back in time; they hint at the performance of deck timbers, decking lumber, and fence posts. Within a particular species, cross-sectional differences affect the strength of wood products cut from the tree (denser rings usually mean stronger lumber), their stability (edge-grained lumber tends to shrink less), and the thoroughness of preservative treatment.

The cross-section encompasses three primary zones: heartwood, sapwood, and bark

The heartwood is the center of the tree. It has become inactive, and is unnecessary for the continued life of the tree. Heartwood may be infrlhated with gums and resins, which usually make it darker in color than sapwmd and morc resistant to decay.

Between the heartwood and the bark lies the sapwood, the younger, living part of a tree. It is rnorc porcus than heartwood and more susceptible to decay, but has essentially the same shength.

When lumber is sawn from a log, individual pieces may contain a small amount of heartwood or, in the case of a 4x4 or 6x6 that is usually cut from the center of the log, there could be more than 50% hearnvood. (This will vary by species; southern pine, for example, usually has more sapwood than western hemlock or Douglas fir.)

AVOID SEEING THE SHRINK: Lumber shrinks as it dries out and sweils when it oets wet. When lumber is cut from a tree and again immediately after preservative treatm;nt, the wood is saturated with moisture. This iliustration shows how characteristic shrinkaoe of wood items depends on position in the cross-section. Radial shrinkaqe (across the rings) is about hali as great as tangential (along the rings). Water repelleit inlected into wood and applied on the surface every year or so wiLl minimize shrinkage'and other eflecls of moisture on treated decking and lumber. [Note: most logs are not as large as shown, and posts and timbers come from the center.]

The location of the piece in the cross-section affects the amount of heartwood and the direction of the grain; grain rnay run roughly perpendicular to the width of the lumber (called edge-grained or quartersawn) or it may arc roughly parallel to the width (flat-grained or plainsawn). Or it could be somewhere in between.

Heartwood typically is somewhat more resistant to decay than sapwood, but sapwood accepts pressure-treatment with waterborne preservative more readily than does heartwood. Many pieces of lumber contain sorne

heartwood, often surrounded by sapwood. Thus the heartwood, which gets very little preservative penetration in the treating process, is protected by the well-penetrated sapwood around it.

Sometimes heartwood is exposed on a side of lumber; experience has demonstrated that the natural durability of heartwood combined with a thin layer of preservative treatment is nearly always adequate protection for wood in above-ground service.

If you cut a piece of pressuretreated lumber, you may notice that the greenish color of the preservative does not permeate the entire thickness of wood. Industry standards, established by the American Wood-Preservers' Association (AWPA), specify the amount of penetration required for effective treatment. The standards vary for different species of wood and different sizes of lumber. For southern pine, they require penetration of 2.5" or 85Vo of the sapwood. There is no requirement for penetrating heartwood.

Responsible treating companies check after each treatment cycle to see that AWPA standards are met, and they contract with independent inspection agencies to monitor their production. Core borings are taken from processed wood to determine the depth and amount of preservative in the wood.

For an extra measure of assurance, particularly with structural timbers that are sawn during construction, you can coat cut ends with a brush-on preservative to bolster protection of exposed heartwood. (In western species, which are largely heartwood, this step is highly recommended and is required in order to validate most warranties.) Look for topical preservatives containing at least copper.

Well, what about bark side up or bark side down? For years there was discussion over the proper way to orient deck lumber. Most experts advised placing lumber so that the bark side (outward rings) faced upward, but a significant group advocated the opposite. The debate was largely ended in the 1990s when a definitive study was conducted by the Mississippi Forest Products Laboratory of Mississippi State

University with several co-sponsors.

The definitive study, however, did not result in a definitive recommendation. It found that cupping and grain raising were less when decking was installed with its bark side up, but checking was less when decking faced bark side down. The best orientation depends on which tendency you prefer to avoid.

The study was clear on two factors: warping was less in straightgrain all-sapwood decking, and both cupping and checking were reduced

when a coating of water repellent was applied annually.

The rings of a tree tell much more than the tree's age; they are a crystal ball revealing the performance and appearance of future decks.

True Value. and it came down to a lot of reassurance on their parts. They went to bat for me. I knorv." he swears. "that without them. it rvould have been a real struggle to get over that hump."

Reps from True Value and Mr. Koopman both joined him at meetings rvith the owner. "l rvas rvorking at Koopman while I was trying to buy my own yard. but they knerv that and still helped me." Michael gratefully notes about his mentor. So on January 19.2003. the business became his. "It had been declining. but I sarv the potential. I had lots of ideas."

f ISTENING. Guinness? Here's I-Jone for the record. At 23 years old, Michael DiVirgilio became the proud owner of Buy-Rite Building and Home Center. And no, he's not the boss's son. He didn't even grow up in Danielson, Ct., where the yard is located. He found it on the Internet.

And yes, he knew what he was doing. By 14, he was stocking shelves at Koopman Lumber in Massachusetts. Then, while earning his BA in Communications plus Associate of Science degrees in Small Business Management and Business Administration in Lyndon, Vt., he put in 25hour weeks at Lyndonville True Value. Both owners divined his keen interest and provided hands-on train-

ing. "They saw I had a passion for the business and rvanted to excel." as Michael states the case.

After briefly flirting with the idea of becoming a TV rveatherman on the way to his degree, "l got hooked wholeheartedly. I rvanted to own my orvn business." And what better one. as all you fellas knorv. than a lumberyard?

"So I went on the Internet and searched the Northeast for a True Value store for sale."

Buy-Rite's owner, who had built the yard from the ground up 30 years ago, had his doubts. "He didn't knorv how to take me-asked about things like 'unencumbered cash.' But he checked with Mr. Koopman and rvith

The yard needed a facelift. for one. "Before." Michael recalls. "it rvas simply 6x6s piled rvith lumber: you couldn't even see it from the street. It didn't present itself rvell and didn't make it easy for the pros-rvho didn't do much business there. anyrvay.

"l put in a 65 by 2O-ft.-high cantilevered rack on one side: it looks great from the road. People are coming in rvith. 'Worv! I didn't knorv you guys carried so much.' It's really helped business."

Making such improvements as he can afford them. next summer Michael plans to build another rorv opposite the first one and truss over a roof betrveen them to create a drivethrough yard.

Inside. True Value's AIM inventory program clued him into rvhat to stock. "We got rid of the X movers to provide more A and B movers. We also added linear footage and trvo feet in height to the aisles. We replaced the surfaces of the customer-service counter and generally cleaned up the place." he says.

To add value for the pros he rvished to lure his rvay. Michael recently added a line of Benjamin Moore paints ("the former orvner had neglected to acquire new lines"). put in a propane station. and bou-eht a boom truck. (Horv the heck did the kid have money for a boom. you're asking? Well. so did this reporter. "Mr. Koopman helped me." Michael once again acknorvledges in arve. "I bought his old one." he explains.)

"With it. rve sell a lot more shingles and rvhole-house frames. rvhich the company never did before. Contractors used to come in just for odds and ends. but rve rvanted a piece of the action."

Not that the pros have to make the trip anymore. Buy-Rite norv boasts its first outside salesperson-actually an

inside salesman who now spends part of his time on the road, visiting jobsites, pulling permits, and letting contractors know that the yard now offers those house packages that make their life easier. "It's a big step for the store," allows Michael.

"Adding outside sales has doubled business. I'll go outside, myself, and knock on doors. They tell me, 'We didn't know Buy-Rite had been sold.' It had a reputation that needed improving."

He continues. "We used to deal only with cash-and-carry." He's entered into an advertising campaign via full-color newspaper inserts to grow that 40Vo d-i-y trade. But pros these days may open charge accounts on a 30-day receivable basis, "which I watch very carefully," Michael notes. "I tell them, 'I need your help [in prompt paymentl to keep prices low.' I learned that in business school. But from Koopman, I picked up other techniques, like what to carry, and not settling for the first price for commodities, but the 'best' price."

Buy-Rite's existing kitchen and bath center now has a full-time designer on board, "and I bought her a laptop for when she's on the road, to provide professionalism and keep up with the times," says her boss.

"We also carry longer lengths than in the past-24 ft. instead of l6-and offer free contractor delivery," he adds, noting The Depot charges $75.

"The yard used to carry only economy grade; now, we stock better quality, so you don't have to dig through 30 2x4s to get two to use. It's hard to compete with a Home Depot in a price war, but for builders, it's quality, quick in and out, and service."

The store's technology was hopelessly outdated. "We had orange VDT monitors," he gasps. "That had to gol I upgraded every computer to a Windows-based program from Activant. That meant a lot of staff training, but everyone now loves it; they can show customers catalogs online instead of thumbing through pages. And we've upgraded our billing-no more of those green ledger pages where everything's entered three times."

His inherited staff of 14 showed a bit of justifiable apprehension when

Michael, straight from school, took over. But his easygoing ways won them over. "My advice to a young boss is, just listen to them; they've got the knowledge. Don't be a tyrant or there'll be a huge resistance to change.

"For the first six months, I kept the status quo while I looked at what worked and what didn't-something I learned by second nature, not college," he allows. He's grown loyalty by launching a tradition of Christmas bonuses, Thanksgiving turkey giveaways, and pizza with staff meetings.

Supported by his wife (whom he met at Koopman, by the way), "l come in every day with new ideas, new goals. But I remember that it takes TLC to be in a growth mode. Right now, our margins are pretty much status quo because we've been going for more contractor business. and that means lower margins [on those accountsl, but we'll make it up in volume and special orders," he says, satisfied. "We're getting lot of repeat business from remodelers, too, who refer us. Our customer count is uP."

The secret, he says, is to create a happy atmosphere, which trickles down from employees to customers. "You've got to enjoy what you do," says Michael, who's clearly got that mastered. "I'll keep at it until I can't walk anymore."

The installed sales manager

TITHERE are a myriad of compelling reasons to offer I installation services for your customers. However, just because customers appreciate or even demand the service doesn't mean you won't have troubles or challenges along the way and management is usually at fault.

When top management is not fully committed to the concept, they frequently don't provide the proper climate for the program to succeed. When the staff views installed sales as another program de jour, they rvon't support or promote it. It's management's job to insure everyone in the company internalizes the concept. (Review, this coluntn in the July, September and November BPD./

However, top management isn't the number one issue.

Most failures usually rest with the installed manager. Just because someone performs rvell as a building material salesperson or serves in a management capacity doesn't mean he or she is qualified to be an installed manager. Installed sales programs comprise value-added services and production orientated solutions and demands a different mindset.

I've seen this validated rvhen a program quickly becomes a commercial success after the manager is replaced. In a perfect rvorld you rvould be able to run an ad in the nervspaper and easily find the ideal candidate rvith years of experience and a superior rvork ethic. Horvever. we all knorv rve don't operate in a perfect world. Finding the perfect person candidate can be a daunting task.

When recruiting for an installed sales manager. attitudes should win out. even rvhen a candidate is a little short on experience. Skills can be learned. Proper attitudes can't. Most companies that deliver top-notch services do so by hiring attitudes and then educating for skills development.

I've seen a number of successful installed sales programs managed by people rvho came from outside our industry. They knerv little about building materials or even construction, but are successful installed managers. They understand the basics of superior customer service and respect their installers by treating them fairly.

They also understand that that an installed sales program adds value for the customer. And they have access to the proper training. either internally or by manufacturers. However, hiring someone rvho has years of experience but is only rvorking for a paycheck usually rvill not produce the results you're looking for.

You need to determine where you want your installed program to go. Will you be happy with $300.000 in sales or rvould you like to see the program reach the million dollar sales level or more? The manager of a million dollar program is likely to demand considerably more than the manager of a $30O,0OO program. Who is worth more to your company? When you do the math. the "costlier" manager. even at trvice the salary. can be a far bener investment.

It is like almost every thing else in life-you get what you pay for. Over the years I have seen numerous examples of dealers rvho tried to save a ferv dollars and ended up paying the price rvith an installed manager rvho didn't produce the desired results.

Your best candidate might be rvorking for someone else. Maybe he's currently employed by a specialty company that doesn't offer the breadth of products that your company does. Many of these people can envision the advantages that a full-line building material dealer offers. both to employees and customers. Frequently they rvant to better serve their customers but their current employer isn't able to accommodate them rvith additional product offerings. Your ability to offer bundled installed products gives you a definite recruiting advantage! Cast a vision that offers a candidate additional growth opportunities that can't be realized rvith the current employer.

And if you can't hire someone rvith the perfect resume. find someone with a great attitude. Then demand the proper training from your suppliers. Also. send your new manager to installed seminars. roundtables and conferences. This rvill provide them rvith an opportunity to meet rvith other managers that can share solutions and help hone skills.

Dear Dr. Moore:

Which is better for the environment, hydrogen-powered cars or the new hybrids?

In the near term, I'd have to say the hybrids-because they offer a way to reduce pollution now.

Promoters of a "hydrogen economy" say it's just around the corner; that we'll soon begin work on a network of fueling stations for hydrogen-powered cars. Hydrogen doesn't result in harmful emissions. so the idea is that we'll drastically cut pollution (and greenhouse gases in particular), while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.

It's an attractive vision. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and, in its pure form, burns absolutely clean. Unfortunately, there are some major technical problems to solve before we can say with certainty that this is the way to proceed.

The biggest barrier is how to source the hydrogen, because it always comes

attached to something else. We could use electricity to split rvater into hydrogen and oxygen, but that rvould require a vast increase in electricity production. Or rve can take the hydrogen out of oil and natural gas, but this still makes us dependent on fossil fuels.

For the hydrogen economy to be successful, rve'll need to generate more than trvice the electricity rve do norv. and rve'll need to do it all rvith non-fossil fuel energy. That means a dramatic increase in nuclear porver plants. hydroelectric dams, solar cells, geothermal power. etc.-something society may not be rvilling to do. at least not yet.

Storage and transportation are other issues (hydrogen is bulky and corrosive), as is getting enough into a car to travel a reasonable distance. But automakers are experimenting rvith different options and may rvell find solutions.

Meanrvhile. current hybrids use both an electric motor and gas engine. and are nearly trvice as efficient as conventional vehicles. We're also starting to see modified versions. rvhich have an additional power source that can be recharged at home-and are twice as efficient as the models available norv. Modified hybrids aren't yet mass produced (though some mechanically minded individuals have created their orvn). but should be on the market rvithin a few years.

There's no question that our dependence on fossil fuels has to be reduced. In addition to the fact that it's polluting. oil is non-renewable and experts believe rve'll soon hit peak production-after rvhich the .unount produced rvill steadily decline (as prices skyrocket). There's also the very real danger of sourcing oil from parts of the rvorld that are politically unstable.

So. even though hydrogen offers great potential. it doesn't make sense to rvait for the hydrogen economy to start dealing rvith the issue at hand-not when hybrid cars are here norv and can make a very real difference.

Doors, Windows Up Globally

Worldrvide demand for windows and doors is forecast to rise 4.7% annually through 2009 to $125 billion, according to a new Freedonia Group study. Advances will be driven by acceleration in economic grorvth. ongoing develoment efforts, and rising personal income levels.

Growth in the industrializing nations of Afria/Mideast. Asia. Eastern Europe and Latin America will outperform demand in the U.S.. Western Europe and Japan, although intensity of product use will remain comparatively low in most developing countries. China, India and Russiaalong with the smaller markets of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia-are expected to register some of the strongest increases in window and door demand.

Demand for doors, which accounted for just over half of the global market totaf in2004, is projected to rise at roughly the same pace as rvindorvs through 2009. Vinyl, fiberglass and other plastic doors will be the fastest growth category.

Sales of plastic and metal rvindorvs will also climb at above-averase rates.

Plastic rvindorv suppliers rvill benefit from the comparatively lorv cost of products such as vinyl rvindows, as rvell as the durability and energy efficiency that plastic units offer.

Metal rvindorv and door demand will be stimulated by _erorvth in nonresidential construction expenditures. and supported by stron_s market conditions in China and India and an upturn in demand in Japan-areas in rvhich metal products account for the majority of sales.

The residential building market accounts for trvo-thirds of global rvindorv and door demand. but nonresidential rvill -srorv even faster. spurred by rising commercial construction. Residential sales rvill be driven by rising per capita income. greater urbanization. and further growth in the number of households. Nerv construction applications. rvhich represented rvell over half of all fenestration products in 2004. will climb at about the same pace as repair and remodeling.

Transload Opens In Fontana

Tristar Transload, Vancouver, Wa., is adding an operation in Fontana, Ca., to better serve the Southland.

"Southern Califomia represents our biggest receiving point," said Peter Howe, president of Tristar. "Our new location is perfectly positioned to serve our customer base."

"We are very pleased to be able to offer an end-to-end solution for transporting lumber and building materials from the manufacturing points in the Pacific Nortwest to Southern California," said Burke Rice, president of the Fontana location. "We feel fortunate to be in such an ideal location."

Built on 38 acres, the center is near BNSF lines and three major highways. Dedicated switching services route up to nine inbound railcars to the appropriate track, reducing transit time. Another plus, said Rice, is that the location has two of its own locomotives. "We have more flexibility onsite because we can move the rail cars ourselves," he said. Pickup and delivery by truck is also available.

All of the site is fenced and well lighted; l8 acres is dedicated to transload and short-term storage of dimensional products. Additional warehouse capacity is available at nearby BNSF transloading facilities.

Big Blaze Strikes Sunroc

A Thanksgiving day fire at Sunroc Corp.'s Lindon, Ut., plant caused close to $l million in damages, but most operations were back to normal the following Monday.

Nearly 10.0m sq. ft. of its 50,000sq. ft. truss plant/warehouse was destroyed by the fire, as was fiberglass insulation and garage doors in storage. A forklift and I I pickup trucks were also destroyed. "We've placed orders to replace the pickups from local dealerships in Utah. as rvell as the forklift." said Brent Smith, v.p.-business development rvith parent company Clyde Companies, Orem. Ut.

"We rvere able to replace the burnt inventory rvith supplies from our insulation and garage door vendors in Utah." said Smith. "We also have arrangements for temporary warehouse space in Orem for at least 30 days, until the damaged part of our building is rebuilt."

The cause of the fire may remain unknown. since fire crews bulldozed burning materials out of the building in order to properly extinquish the blaze. "But had they not done that, we rvould have had four times more damage to the building," said Smith. "They saved the south end of the building rvhere our computers, phone systems, administration and accounting offices rvere located."

Lumbermens has relocated its corporate headquarters from Olympia, Wa., to a 16.800-sq. ft. "green building" in Lacey, Wa. The Lanoga division has 6O lumberyards in the West.

"Our goal was to build a building nestled in the rvoods that has expansion ability and is environmentally sensitive." said president M. David Dittmer. More than 50Vc of the rvood used in the nerv building was Forest Stervardship Council-certifi ed.

In fact. because of both construction materials and design features, the entire building is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. Glass-filled rvalls and halhvays drarv in as much natural light as possible. The lobby floor is 1SO-year-old center heart pine salvaged from a mill in Alabama. Carpets. rvood finishes and paints are virtually free of the glues and solvents that can impair indoor air quality and affect employee health.

Lumber products cut from Douglas fir range from studs and framing lumber to timbers and appearance grades. However, a vast majority of Douglas fir-98Vo-is produced as structural lumber for use in construction.

It is the first choices for architects and engineers who seek the best in structural lumber. Douglas fir is dimensionally stable, allowing it to dry in place with minimal warp or splitting. For that reason, some'l3%o of Douglas fir production is sold as unseasoned or green lumber. Coast

mills in particular produce mostly green lumber. In 2004, almost X)Vc of Coast production rvas sold as green compared to lSVc of Inland DF-L our put.

The species is universally recognized for its superior strength-torveight ratio. Its high specific gravity provides excellent nail- and plateholding ability. Douglas fir also has a history of superior performance against external forces such as rvinds. storms and earthquakes.

With one of the highest modulus of elasticity (E), or stiffness ratings. of all North American softwood species, Douglas fir's high stiffness to srrength

ratio makes it a perfect fit for floor joists and rafters. This unique property provides stiff but comfortable floors on par rvith engineered wood's performance but at a significantly lower cost.

It also carries the highest ratings of any western softrvood in other design values and performs competitively rvith engineered wood products.

"Despite the competition from other species as rvell as engineered rvood products, Douglas fir is still the product of choice in many markets throughout the country." said Steve Schmitt. vice president of marketing for Stimson Lumber Co. The Portland-based company produces Coast green Douglas fir lumber as rvell as kiln-dried Douglas fir-larch products at their Inland operations.

"Builders like the rvorkability of Douglas fir lumber and architects value its high strength values. which offers great flexibility in design," said Schmitt.

Multi-story construction often utilizes Douglas fir's unique strength characteristics. Wood-framed buildings of four, five and even six stories push the limits of the building code. But Douglas fir is rvell suited for such structures.

Wood's ability to carry short-term increased stresses resulting from rvind and seismic loads give it a high margin of reserve strength. Douglas fir, in particular, is a favorite among multistory designers because of its superior strength and the large body of available test data from using the species in shear rvalls. diaphragms and firerated assemblies. It is also one of a select group of species readily available in fire-retardant treatments.

Douglas fir is one of the few western species available in large sizes. from 3x4 posts to l2xl2 heavy timbers. Best known for their tough fiber, dense grain structure and strength, Douglas fir timben are specified for a variety of uses. from long-span beams in residential and commercial structures to supports for bridge and road construction.

The future of Douglas fir remains bright. as it ranks as the most plentiful softrvood species in North America. accounting for one-fifth the continent's total softrvood teserves.

As mills expand their reach for timber. customers may notice some nerv markings on Douglas fir lumber in addition to the familiar D Fir and Doug Fir-L marks.

Mills that source logs from the U.S. and Canada stamp their lumber rvith a combination grademark shorving both the D Fir and D Fir (N) marks. These combination marks are necessary because of the modest differences in design values-mostly in the highest grades-betrveen U.S. and Canadian Douglas fir.

While white fir is part of the hm-firgrqrp, it is preferred by many buyers and often pulled as a single species. Some buyers consider white fir more stable, but the design values and strength properties are the same as those for hem-fir.

Cedar grows throughout the forests of the West into Canada. One of the lightest softwoods by weight and naturally durable, it often used for decking, siding, fencing, shingles and shakes. The products cut on the east side of the Cascade Mountain range arc often marketed as inland red cedar.

ECORD demand and red-hot housing markets have spurred a renaissance for the Western lumber industry. The region once supplied some 45Vo of the lumber used in the country before spiraling to a postWorld War II low in 1995. But this new decade has been marked by a resurgence in production and a retooling for the future.

The current era has been unprecedented for lumber demand in the U.S. Western Wood Products Association projects Americans will use 63.5 billion bd. ft. of lumber in 2005, the most in history. The 2005 demand

volume is not only the fourth record year in the past five, but represents a nearly l0 billion bd. ft. increase from 2000 consumption.

Housing and repair/remodeling have been the main lumber demand drivers. Housing starts have increased steadily since 2000, topping 2 million units in 2005 and consuming a record 27 billion bd. ft. of lumber. With nearly half of the American housing stock more than 40 years old, lumber used in repair and remodeling has surged to more than 20 billion bd. ft.

Western sarvmills have rode this wave of demand to steadv increases in

production. Sarvmills in the region rvill produce just over l9 billion bd. ft. in 2005. the fourth consecutive annual increase. Unfortunately, the gains have not been shared equally throughout the West.

Mills in the Coast Region. covering Oregon and Washington rvest of the Cascades. have posted a decadelong string of annual production increases. reaching more than I I billion bd. ft. in 2005. Producing mostly Douglas fir and hem-fir framing lumber. Coast mills have paced the West's volume surge.

an area covering eastern Oregon and Washington across to the Black Hills of South Dakota and south to the Mexican border, has seen production flatten or shrink. Ten years ago, production was evenly split between the Coast and Inland regions. Today, Inland production totals 6.8 billion bd. ft., or a gap of some 4 billion bd. ft. under Coast volumes.

Ponderosa pine has long been the staple for Inland mills, but that is changing. Inland ponderosa production over the past decade has declined by 27Vo, or about 600 million bd. ft. Meanwhile, both Inland Douglas firlarch and hem-fir production since 1995 have expanded by l87o each.

The Califomia Redwood region has followed a similar path. Production in the northern California areas has fallen by one-third since 1997 to just over I billion bd. ft. While redwood is the highest produced by volume in this region, other species- mostly Douglas fir-now comprise almost half of the production.

These shifts underscore the changing lumber product mix in the West. Today, more than 86Vo of the region's production is in structural lumber, including joists, studs and timbers. Appearance grade products, ranging from board Commons to Shop and Selects, accounted forjust l4%o of production, compared to 35Vo of the output two decades earlier.

The gains in western production

have come despite a shrinking base of producing mills. At the industry's peak in the 1960s. the West rvas home to more than 1.000 sarvmills. The alltime high westem output of 24 billion bd. ft. in 1987 rvas produced by 702 sawmills. Today, horvever, just 229 sawmills are operating in the region.

The demographics of western

sarvmills have changed as rvell. Fifteen years ago, production was split among small. medium and large mills. Today. almost 65% of the region's production comes from large mills, producing 100 million M. ft. or more annually.

Size rvill matter even more in the future. Currenrly,2T mills produce in excess of 200 million bd. ft. of lumber a year-double the number of mills producing that volume just five years ago.

The rvestern lumber industry is poised for the future. Companies are investing millions in new manufacturing technology, increasing efficiency and lorvering costs. Advances in areas such as automated lumber grading will allow sarvmills to become even more competitive.

More challenges are on the horizon for rvestern mills. from the transfer of forestlands to Timber Investment Management Organizations, or TIMOs. to the grorving presence of lumber imports from Canada, Europe and Latin America in the market. Horvever, as it has proved so many times in the past, the western lumber industry can change adversity into opportunity.

The West's largest annual lumber meet

II/ESTERN Wood Products Association will return to VY ttre desert for its 42nd annual meeting, bringing together lumber industry executives and others from throughout the West and beyond. The 2006 meeting, scheduled for March ll-14, will be held at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch, one of the premier resorts in the Phoenix/Scottsdale, Az., area.

The WWPA annual meeting carries a rich tradition in the industry. Often referred to as "The Pine Meeting" by long-time industry veterans, the three-day event draws a wide cross-section of the western lumber industry, from c.e.o.'s and presidents to sales professionals to mill managers and quality control experts.

The 2006 meeting features business meetings, a golf tournament, a construction site tour and many networking opportunities. WWPA also will present an updated forecast on lumber supply and demand for the coming year.

Since the 2006 meeting dates coincide with Major League Baseball's spring training, attendees can come early or leave late and take in a few games. The Phoenix/Scottsdale area is home to eight of the l2 pro teams in the spring Cactus League.

For suppliers and others doing business with western lumber mills, the WWPA Exchange Show held during the meeting offers a forum to showcase services or products before this key buying audience. The Exchange Show features table top displays and runs over the course of two days. A table top can be reserved forjust $150, or $75 for WWPA Distributor and Service Associates.

Design tools can help customers with lumber choices

qELECTING the right western lum\Jber product for a construction project can be a daunting task, even for seasoned design professionals. Two software design tools can make that job easier, allowing wholesalers and retailers to help their customers make the right choice.

The Western Lumber Design Suite and the new Lumber DesignEasv- can deliver information on western lumber grades, spans and other technical information with just a few clicks. The two design tools, which work in concert with Microsoft Excel, are available free of charge from Western Wood Products Association.

The Western Lumber Design Suite is a full-featured design tool that provides calculations for horizontal framing (beams and joists), vertical framing (posts and studs) and wood-towood shear connections. Calculations are available for the major sizes and grades of western lumber products available in the market today. All calculations follow the 2001 National Design Specification for Wood Construction.

The Design Suite features three modes: Beam/Joist Design, Post/Stud Design, and Wood-to-Wood Single Shear Connections. The Beam/Joist mode is for horizontal framing and calculates reactions. shear. stresses. moments and deflections based on the specified loads. Users select the design parameters, and the program assigns appropriate adjustment factors and determines whether the specified member size is adequate. Also displayed are diagrams, bending moments. horizontal shear and deflec-

tion per the specified loads, all on one screen.

For vertical framing. the PosVStud Design mode calculates compressive stress, bending stress. and combined stress ratio based on the specified loads for posts or studs. Users select the design parameters and the program determines whether the specified member size is adequate. Adjustment factors for load duration, size. wet use. bearing area. repetitive member, stability, incising, high temperature, column stability, flat use, and form can be specified.

The Connections mode calculates the single shear capacity of a nail, bolt. rvood screw or lag screrv connecting two rvood members. Load

duration. connector penetration. and rvood member end grain conditions are considered. The calculations are only for simple connections.

While created for professional engineers and designers, the Deslgn Saite allorvs distributors to better serve their customers by providing product recommendations based on the structural requirements in the plans. Retailers using the Design Suite can identify the right species. size and grade of western lumber for a project that they can supply from inventory.

The site features extensive information on western species and products, a full library of digital publications and design tools on lumber and an interactive search utility to find the best sources of western lumber among WWPA member mills.

Much of the crucial information about western lumber can be found in the Online Lumber Technical Guide, a free subscription-based section of the site. After completing the free registration, visitors can learn how to properly specify western lumber, get span tables for most common loading conditions, view profiles and patterns, and download 3l different digital versions of WWPA publications and technical papers.

Since the online guide debuted as a subscription access site in November 2004. more than 10.000 users have registered to use the site. HE LUMBER business is one based on relationships.

Despite the advances in computers. the Internet and other technology. the process of buyin-e and selling lumber is still based on personal contact.

Over the years. those regular contacts can change. particularly after a job change or retirement. A nerv group. the Lumber Pioneers, rvas formed a year ago to help veteran rvood products industry professionals not only maintain these relationships. but document the rich history of companies and individuals rvho have shaped the industry.

The Lumber Pioneers completed its first full year in existence this past October by hosting its first annual meeting in Clackamas. Or.. drarving nearly 50 retired and active industry members and spouses. The inaugural meeting brought together industry professionals to socialize. share memories. and be_ein to chronicle the heritage of lumber manufacturing in the region. During the meeting. the Lumber Pioneers formally established the fraternal organization by electing board members.

Robert H. Hunt. retired WWPA president. rvas elected as chairman of the organization. Charles Shotts of Eugene. Or., rvas elected vice chairman. and Robert Courtney of Lake Osrvego. Or.. rvas named secretary/treasurer.

The Lumber Pioneers also established a board of directors to guide the new group. Those elected to the board include David Cutler. Nervport Beach. Ca.. retired publish-

According to Lumber Pioneers president Hunt. the organization can serve an important role for the past and the future of the lumber industry. "As the years go by, we are starting to lose some of the shared history of the industry as key leaders and entrepreneurs in the lumber business pass away," Hunt explained. "We need to capture that history before it is lost to time and find ways to share that with the new generation working in the business today."

The Lumber Pioneers took the first step in capturing those experiences by publishing its first historical monograph. The monograph details the history of Pope & Talbot, Inc.'s Port Gamble sawmill, which was North America's oldest continuously operating sawmill. Hunt said the group will seek to publish a new monograph

each year on mills and individuals that shaped the development of the industry in the West.

Hunt added that in the future, the Lumber Pioneers will work to establish a scholarship program for the children of those working in the western wood products industry.

To date, membership in the Lumber Pioneers totals nearly 100.

Membership is open to anyone involved in the lumber industry, including retailers. The group's next annual meeting will be held next October in the Portland area.

rnHE HISPANIC labor force is I steadily growing and is expected to comprise l3Vo of the workers by 2008. Many of these workers will be in the wood products industry, working with and distributing various western lumber products.

In response to this growing rvorkforce, WWPA has published three Spanish-language guides detailing the proper handling and use of western lumber in construction.

Sellos de Clasificaci6n de la WWPA (or WWPA Grade Stamps) details how to read a lumber grade stamp to identify grade marks, species and other important information about the product. Alntacenamiento de la Madera (or Luntber Storage) provides recommendations and proper storage instructions for handling and storing lumber on the job site. The Gu(a de Rebajado t Perforaci6n (or Notching and Boring Guide) offers descriptions and diagrams for code-approved notches and holes in load-bearing members to accommodate wiring and plumbing.

The Spanish-language versions of these popular publications rvere released to help educate the grorving number of Hispanic rvorkers in construction rvorking rvith rvestern lumber. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. Hispanic rvorkers accounted for more than I million of the 2.5 million nerv jobs made available in the country during 2fiX. rvith many of these jobs in the construction industry.

Retailers and others have used the WWPA publications to help Spanishspeaking employees to better understand the products and proper use of western lumber by presenting the information in their native language.

Ace Adding Premium Paints

Hoping to reinforce its stores' positioning as prime destinations for d-i-y paint consumers, Ace Hardware Corp. is teaming with Benjamin Moore & Co. to roll out the paint manufacturer's premium products in qualifying Ace locations.

Home Depot Snares Yardbirds

It's now official: Yardbirds Home Centers' l0 Bay Area, Ca., stores have been acquired by Home Depot. Now an "integration team" of Depot executives and former owner John Headley will decide each store's fate.

"The decision to join forces with the Home Depot was made after long deliberation and very careful consideration," said the 72- year-old Headley. "I am very excited about the opportunities this brings to customers, employees and vendors, and I look forward to working with the leadership at Home Depot to integrate our two great companies."

Depot said that Yardbirds has "an outstanding local reputation" and "we are excited to welcome Yardbirds management and store employees into the Home Depot family."

Headley founded Yardbirds in 1975, in Santa Rosa, Ca. The chain now has 650 employees and posted sales of $185 million last year. Over the years, Headley was an outspoken opponent of big-box expansion in Northern California and funded local ballot initiatives to block both Depot and Lowe's.

It is expected that Yardbirds' two

large supercenters in Santa Rosa and Martinez will be closed and quickly remodeled as Home Depot stores. If the eight smaller stores aren't permanently closed or resold, they could be remodeled into smaller Home Depots or Expo Design Centers. At 40,000 to 50,000 sq. ft., rhe smaller yardbirds are less than half the size of the average Home Depot.

Helen Bulwik, a retail consultant in Oakland, Ca., speculates that all yardbirds may be left open, but not expanded. "It's an additional size format for Home Depot," she said. "They already have big stores on the ouiskirts of cities, but with a smaller-format store, they can be become more of a neighborhood store."

Spokeswoman Paula Smith said Depot already has smaller stores, although none smaller than 68,000 sq. ft. She said it's too early to speculate on how Yardbirds will be integrated.

Weyco Petitions High Court

Weyerhaeuser Co. has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a $78.8 million antitrust ruling that the company artificially increased the price of alder to put smaller competitors out of business.

The original case involved RossSimmons Hardwood Lumber Co.. Longview, Wa.. which went out of business in 200 l. Weyerhaeuser as accused of paying higher-than-market prices for more alder than it needed. entering into exclusive agreements with suppliers, and illegally buying logs from state forests.

In 2003. a jury agreed and arvarded Ross $26 million, rvhich was tripled under federal antitrust rules. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Ca., upheld the decision, noting "the evidence sufficiently supports a finding of specific intent ro control prices and eliminate competition."

To date. Weyerhaeuser has paid $62 million to resolve other claims involving its finished alder business. In addition, the company is fighting a $16 million award to Washington Alder LLC and a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of purchasers of finished alder.

Several large corporations and corporate trade groups support Weyco's appeal efforts, saying that the lower court ruling sets a dangerous precedent and exposes companies to lawsuits when they aggressively bid for raw materials and other supplies.

Ecoterrorist Suspects Caught

Three alleged ecoterrorists have been arrested and charged rvith setting fires that caused nearly $l million of dama_9e at the offices of three Oregon timber companies.

"We intend to aggressively investigate and prosecute ecoterrorism here in Oregon," said U.S. Attorney Karin J. Immergut.

Trvo of the suspects. Stanislas Meyerhoff. 28. and Daniel Gerard McGorvan, 31. rvere charged rvith a Jan. 2001 fire at Superior Lumber Co.. Glendale, and a May 2001 fire in the offices and a truck shop at Jefferson Poplar Farm. Clatskanie. If convicted. both men face life in prison.

Forest Industries, Medford. and could receive up to 20 years if convicted. The Earth Liberation Front took responsibility for all three arracks.

"I'm exceptionally happy if. in fact. they have found somebody rvho set the fire." said Jerry Bramrvell. retired president of the norv defunct U.S. Forest Industries. "We cannot allotv that kind of behavior and acrion to dictate what go€s on in our society."

Lumber Exec Pleads Guilty

After fighting the charges for four years, the owner of Petaluma, Ca.based Golden State Lumber has pleaded guilty to five counts of tax evasion for under-reporting more than $l million in income between 1996 and 2fiX).

"l will not try and justify my actions," said Lee Nobmann, 55, owner and c.e.o. "The fact is. I screwed up and intend to take full responsibility." Under an agreement reached with federal prosecutors, he faces up to 21 months in prison and must pay $330.000 in taxes. interest and penalties. Sentencing is scheduled for April.

Nobmann told a U.S. District Court judge in San Francisco that he allowed more than $910,000 of personal expenses to be paid by Golden State and deducted as the company's business expenses. The charges included fishing trips to Alaska, a cruise to Turkey, payments on his $3.6 million Cessna jet, legal bills for his niece, credit card bills for his rvife.

Nobmann also admitted depositing rebate checks from vendors directly into his personal bank account, rvithout reporting them as either personal or business income.

The IRS rvas alerted by Jim O'Brien. Golden State's former corporate financial officer. In a court statement. O'Brien said he rvas fired after questioning the company's practices and making a $200,000 quarterly tax payment against Nobmann's rvishes. In Oct. 2001. IRS agents began their investigation.

Golden State Lumber. which rvas founded by Nobmann's father and has four Bay Area locations, does more than $400 million in sales annually. Despite Nobmann's legal challenges, operations rvill continue as normal.

Oregon's Wood lnnovation Center

The new Oregon Wood Innovation Center at Oregon State University will work closely with private industry to improve competitiveness, preserve jobs, and adapt to a challenging global environment.

"For Oregon's industry to survive and prosper, they must focus on innovation," said director Scott Leavengood, who has been a wood products extension agent at OSU since 1994. "The center can play a key role in bringing groups together, providing technical and business assistance, doing targeted research, and making sure that Oregon wood products are competitive in the world arena."

In areas where it is difficult to compete, such as with commodity furniture imported from China, the center will identify new products, technologies and niche markets where Oregon products can succeed. "These are some of the things we'll analyze, to try to find ways to adapt," said Eric Hansen, a forest products marketing specialist in OSU's department of wood science and engineering.

After decades of cutbacks and mill closures, said Hansen, Oregon's commodity lumber and plywood industry has stabilized. The center will study how to maintain this stability and increase business in specialty products such as moulding, millwork and cabinets, which are enjoying modest growth.

The center also aims to help smaller companies survive and play different roles in land management. "The foundation for forest health and productivity is maintaining a range of tree types and ages to sustain plant and wildlife diversity," said Hal Salwasser, dean of the college of forestry. "Many of the smaller, family- owned companies in our state have forest-management approaches that aim to do exactly that, and we need to keep these companies viable."
