The Merchant Dear Dave,

Having now retutned to England I am beginning tc realize vast differences in aPproaches to merchandising lumber that the United States and the United Kingdom have.

Before I start trying to implement ideas here at home I felt I must write and thank those people in America who had been so kind and helpful to me. It was, indeed, a pleasure to meet you, and I would like you to convey to Jerry HickeY my appreciation for the time he spent with me and, of course, the introduction he made with the Cooper Lumber Company.

I feel that I must not lose contact with your organization and therefore I am sure I will be writing to you at regular intervals to ask your advice or help.

May I say once again-many thanks for all your help.

Yours sincerely,

John Alsford

Dear Jerry:

On completing my term as president of Hoo-Hoo-Ette CIub No. 6, I thank you and The Merchant, on behalf of the club, for the cooperation you have given us during the past year.

Best wishes to you aII for the coming year.

Dear Dave:

This is in regard to your Vagabond Editorials. I have been enjoying it for years, but since the passing of Jack Dionne they have not been the same, mostly philosophic writing.

I was wondering if it is at all possible to re-run some of his jokes, wits, puns, anecdotes, etc. I have used many of them when I was a toastmaster, but I feel quite sure that there are many that I have missed, There are many others that feel as I do and somehow or other missed some good ones. It is said that if a story is good it is worth repeating.

Every one in our office reads the Merchant from "Stem to Stern" which means we enjoY every issue immensely.

With kindest regards, Merchantly yours,

Aram Mardian Glen Mar Door Mfg. Co. Phoenix, Ariz.

SAW MItt FOR SA[E:

One haywire sawmill, nice locationten mile haul to the shipping station.

Half-a-mile of plank road, rest of it mudsix bridges (condemned) but otherwise good.

Timber strictly yellow fir, very few knotsawfully sound between rotten spots.

Fire box boiler, flues leak someinjector patched with chewing gum.

Darn good whistle and carriage tracknine feet left on old smoke stack.

Belt's a little ragged-rats ate the laceshead saw's cracked in a couple of places.

The engine knocks and it's loose on its basethe flyrvheel's chipped in a couple of places.

There's a pile of side lumber and a few cull tiesbut they've been attached by some rough-neck guys.

There's a mortgage on the land-it's now past dueand I still owe for the machinery, too.

But if you want to get rich, here's the place to beginit's a dam-good layoutfor the shape it's in.
