Virginia Market Expanding

A growing Charlottesville, Va., market is creating a flurry of home center activity.

The Hechinger Co. has announced plans to open a store in Seminole Square this spring. Lowe's opened a second area store in the Rio Hill Shopping Center just before Christmas. Phillips Building Supply recently completed an expansion.

Sales by large home improvement retailers such as Lowe's and Moore's Building Supply rose about 200/o in 1989 over 1988, said Mark Sandridge, manager of the new Lowe's, Home improvement projects, both d-i-y and contractor driven, are an alternative to moving to bigger, more expensive homes in the area where housing cost are rising rapidly. "People who can't afford to step-up on the normal wage they're making will add on or renovate what they have," Sandridge said.
