I joined Facebook a few months ago. I was looking for some “lost” college friends and thought that was the best way to track them down. Haven’t connected with them yet, but there’s still hope. It didn’t take me long to learn there’s way too much I don’t want to know anything about being shared on Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to see my friends enjoying themselves on warm tropical islands, mountainous national parks and five star restaurants. What’s not so nice is seeing and reading about the things that divide us so deeply… like politics and our views on social issues. I’d rather focus on the things that unite us and reinforce our connected communities: Our sports teams, our hometowns, our schools, churches, workplaces, our hobbies, our families…and oh yes, our gardens! There’s a ton of positives waiting to be experienced and shared in your gardens and at Bucks Country Gardens – we’re all about great gardens! I might even follow you if you post a bunch of great photos.

In the

Container Gardens:

Easy Steps to Maintain Water • Check moisture levels first to see if containers need water. Push finger aboout 1½” into soil. If it feels dry, plants need watering. Check daily during the summer months. Plants in containers tend to dry out faster than those planted in the ground, especially in hot dry weather. • Give them a good drink. Watering deeply encourages root growth towards the bottom of the pot, which is better for your plants’ health.

Oh-So-Colorful Coleus Need something for sun, shade, or in-between? There is a Coleus for you! A popular annual due to its impressive foliage color palette and wide range of sizes, Coleus thrives in full sun to medium shade in containers or the landscape equally well. Upright or trailing foliage in shades of hot pink, lime green, burgundy, or burnt orange in solid hues, blotches, striking vein patterns are sure to steal the spotlight in summer planters. Here are a few of our favorites: A. ‘Kong Jr. Rose’ B. ‘Splish Splash’ C. ‘Electric Lime’ D. ‘Trusty Rusty’ E. ‘ColorBlaze Kingswood Torch’ F. ‘Burgundy Wedding Train’

• Tidy up containers as needed. Prune leggy or damaged stems and remove off-colored foliage. • Deadhead (prune) spent flower heads to encourage new blooms. • Even with the best of care, some plants will start to look past their prime. Pull out and replace with fresh plants. Use similar plants and colors to complement remaining flowers, or replace with current seasonally themed plants.

Annuals

Birds, bees and butterflies are great pollinators who help move pollen within flowers or from flower to flower for fertilization and successful seed and fruit production. This ensures plants will produce full-bodied fruit and a full set of viable seeds. Here are some bright, fragrant annuals and perennials that will get pollinators buzzing about.

• Rapidly growing plants need plenty of nutrients, especially in containers where the amount of soil is limited. • Incorporate a slow release fertilizer (such as Osmocote) into the potting soil to jump start plants and provide nutrition for several months. • As plants get bigger, supplement additional nutrients throughout the growing season with regular applications of a water-soluble fertilizer. We use Bud n’ Bloom for bigger blooms, and you should, too!

Overcoming Variances

In

Your Own

Sometimes, what the client wants to build doesn’t fit into the ordinances of their municipality. In those cases, we either alter the design, or if that isn’t an option – as was the case with this property – a variance is needed. In this client’s unique situation, their corner property has two frontages and virtually no backyard. In their municipality, patios are not permitted in front yards which presents a “hardship”. With no room for a Plan B, our design – a brick patio with bluestone inlay, drystack walls, and small water feature – would need a variance to move forward. We helped the client through the process (due to lack of “backyard”), gained approval, thus clearing the way for their vision of a beautiful outdoor living area to be built, complete with fence, perimeter plantings, and screening. We Design, We Build. We Manage. We Guarantee. From planters to estate development, let Bucks Country Gardens inspire you and create your outdoor living space today!

After Vision becomes reality with new patio, wall, plantings and water feature.

After

The Party’s Outside! What a joy it is to be a part of turning a client’s world into a place to create beautiful memories with friends and family for years to come. The place – a vintage Sylvan pool and patio space in Bucks County – needed a total rehab in order to forge a comfortable and functional area for the family that loves to entertain. The space was pretty exposed and in need of a few updates when we arrived. First, a conversation area was provided shade with a new cedar Walpole Outdoors® pergola kit, complete with a Shade FX canopy. This structure not only provides shade from the hot mid-day sun, but also adds privacy from surrounding neighbors. Next, ample room was created in the pool’s patio area in order to introduce lounge chairs and a dining set outside of the pergola structure, if needed.

8

Nighttime swimming and entertaining are enhanced with an integrated fire pit and landscape lighting. The new paver patio and pool surround uses EP Henry tumbled pavers, and Coventry sitting walls with bluestone caps produce a slightly rustic appearance with some formality. Finally, boulder walls provide a nice natural accent, as well as giving the plants and beds added height to complete the new outdoor room.
