THE BUCKS AWARD

Every time you participate in an activity with the Students’ Union, be it volunteering, a skills session or securing a committee role, we collate these records to showcase your involvement through the Bucks Award. The Bucks Award is divided into sections with the idea that by the time you leave university you have something in every section – a completely achievable goal due to all the free opportunities you have access to thanks to the BIG Deal.

The Bucks Award will be used as an ongoing reflective tool to identify any areas you feel we can help you develop. Maybe you have accrued many volunteering hours but would like to secure a leadership role or maybe you’ve attended lots of skills sessions and would like to use those skills working for us next year. It is also a way of showing prospective employers the many activities you have been involved in, demonstrating the transferable skills and experiences you’ve picked up during your time studying. We will also advise you on how you can effectively talk about your skills and experiences and relate them to workplace scenarios.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

As one of the leading students’ unions in the country, Bucks Students’ Union has employed many graduates on its management and wider staff team. One of our key strategic priorities for the coming years is ‘Employability and Life After University’. To deliver this, we have created the Leadership Academy to recognise the value of developing future leaders early on.

The Leadership Academy is available to all students and entirely bespoke to the individual. We will create a development programme based on your goals for the year and beyond. Whether you are in your first or third year we can create a programme for you. We will offer you training courses specific to your needs, funding for recognised, certified qualifications and networking opportunities to give you the best possible chance for success - all free of charge courtesy of The BIG Deal.

Each October we will recruit our cohort for the coming academic year and, through oneto-one sessions, mentoring and guidance, ensure that when you leave university with your degree, you are completely work-ready.

STUDENT LOANS

MAINTENANCE LOANS

You may be eligible for financial support from the government to help you with the cost of living during your studies. Contact our student hub on students@bnu.ac.uk for more information.

TUITION FEE LOANS

The most common way to fund your degree is with a student loan that covers all your tuition fees - and you won’t be asked to pay back a penny until you’ve graduated and earning over the government threshold. Find out more at gov.uk/student-finance

You can apply for both of these loans from February before you start university and the earlier the better to ensure that you are paid on time in September. You don’t need to have made your final choice of university to apply – just put your first choice and you can edit your application at any point up to enrolment.

There may be additional financial help and benefits that you are able to claim depending on your personal circumstances. gov.uk/student-finance is the best place to start.

BNU SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES

At BNU we are proud to be a friendly and inclusive university, offering an impressive package of scholarships and bursaries to make sure that all our students can reach their potential.

Scholarships and bursaries are financial grants which support specific students and you won’t need to pay anything back. Visit bnu.ac.uk/ugbursaries for more information.

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT AND COUNSELLING

Making the journey through higher education can be hard sometimes. So, if you ever feel like you need a bit of extra support, we can offer professional therapy and help away from your day-to-day environment. It’s all confidential, and completely free too.

DISABILITY AND WELFARE SUPPORT

We are here to help ensure that you get the most from your experience in an inclusive learning environment.

We are happy to discuss individual needs at any stage of your application or during your studies. The earlier you declare your disability in your application, the more we can help to put the support you may need in place.

Our team can assist with applications for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) and can provide screenings for specific learning difficulties, mental health problems and autism as well as adjustment and inclusion plans, including reasonable adjustment recommendations for teaching and exams.

Part-time work

Work

Many of our students work part-time alongside their studies. We have a thriving job shop based in the Bucks Students’ Union and there are plentiful opportunities around all three campuses for part-time roles.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS

We offer work in the form of a Student Ambassador role, working closely with the Marketing and Student Recruitment Department. The scheme allows you to work a paid position that fits around your studies and enables you to grow your CV.

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are Level 4 or Level 5 qualifications, similar to Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and Foundation Degrees.

HTQs sit between Level 3 qualifications such as T-Levels and A-levels and traditional taught degrees. HTQs are vocationally orientated, profession focused and can lead to high skilled, high paid jobs in a broad range of sectors. All HTQs have been mapped and approved against occupational standards that have been designed by industry and employers.

Who are HTQs for?

HTQs are suitable for:

• school leavers (18+): who are looking for an alternative to degrees or apprenticeships

• employees: of organisations wanting to upskill

• mature learners: looking for the skills to change career. What funding is available for HTQs?

All our HTQs are eligible for full student finance. This means that full-time and parttime students starting a HTQ year will be able to apply for both tuition fee and maintenance loans.

Why should you consider a HTQ?

• Fast-track to success: HTQs are a direct route to career success; they focus on practical skills, ensuring you are wellprepared for the workforce.

• Hands-on learning: HTQs emphasize real-world applications, enabling you to engage in practical projects and gain invaluable experience.

• Industry recognition: employers really value HTQs as they are developed in consultation with industry experts, ensuring relevance and alignment with industry needs.

• Flexibility: HTQs come in various levels, from certificates to diplomas, modular learning and continuous professional development (CPD), catering to learners at different stages of their educational journey.

• Career advancement: completing an HTQ can open doors to new job prospects and potentially higher earning potential.

• Build your own degree: all of the modules from these degrees can be studied as short courses.

Upon graduation, you will be eligible to apply to register as a physiotherapist with the Health and Care Professions Council and as a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

PolicingPolicing

Policing is ever-changing and requires people to take on every challenge and meet it with confidence and knowledge. At Buckinghamshire New University, we’ll help prepare you for the demanding roles within the police force and criminal justice sector.

Course areas

+ Professional Policing

+ Police Studies & Criminal Investigation

There is a growing demand for police officers and non-warranted police staff across the UK. We’ve designed our policing courses to help fill this void and prepare you to take the challenges of this sector head on. The courses do take a broader look at policing beyond the police constable role, so if you’re interested in areas such as criminal justice and security too, then BNU may be a great fit for you.

We have worked in partnership with Thames Valley Police for over 15 years to deliver policing programmes, alongside our relationship with the College of Policing. These courses, and the lecturers that deliver them, offer a broad examination of policing and related activities, meaning you will be able to make an informed decision about your future career destination.

As well as learning from our experienced academics (who have or worked in their specialist areas), we often bring in practitioners to deliver guest talks covering contemporary policing topics.

Throughout the course, students are also supported with specialised facilities on campus, such as our Police Code of Practice Suite. Included in the suite is a mock bedsit, custody desk and suspect interview room, as well as adjoining seminar rooms with a live audio and video feed. In here, you’ll get to practise core policing processes, such as arrest and interview of suspects as well as searching premises, in a safe, controlled environment.

As well as simulating real life scenarios, getting tangible work experience also helps bring the theory to life and enhance your employability in the sector. Through our partnership with Thames Valley Police, you will be able to apply for a volunteer Special Constable position while studying for your degree. Selection to perform this voluntary Special Constable role is subject to a selection process and criteria owned by Thames Valley Police.

Whilst many of our graduates from this programme have successfully gained employment in the police force, others have followed careers within the wider criminal justice system and beyond.

The teaching staff are excellent; my course leaders are amazing and answer all questions that I have, they are extremely knowledgeable in their field.

At BNU, we introduce you to various specialisms and offer you the flexibility to chose a course which leads to your chosen career. For example, you can choose to study in psychology, counselling and psychotherapy or forensic psychology. Alternatively, you could focus on criminology. You could also combine your studies in criminology and forensics, criminology and law, or health and social sciences. There are options to suit every interest.

Our staff are highly experienced, drawing on existing links within industry to help you develop the knowledge you need for your future career. Our teaching team are also highly regarded for their research and publications. Many of our lecturers are social scientists and have active research interests into ageing, gender issues and mental health, as well as society. Whilst studying at BNU, you’ll be given the opportunity to hear from external speakers who can provide you with a deeper understanding of the subject.

We can arrange trips to places like prisons, charities working with vulnerable people, sports grounds, events and other occupational settings to give you insights into different career paths. You’ll see your chosen subject in action and how your degree can be used in the real world. What’s more, you could also gain experience volunteering in areas like mental health, forensic-related agencies and educational settings. This all helps to enhance your skills, as well as enable you to build up valuable contacts, further preparing you for life after graduation.

CRIMINOLOGY HEALTH AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

Mental health, crime and society, ageing, gender, diversity, inequality - only by understanding people’s experiences of these areas can we really start solving the big issues facing society. With BNU, you can explore the theories, policies, processes and relationships that influence attitudes, beliefs and behaviour in society.

After graduation, you could look into jobs within and around the criminal justice system, such as the courts, prisons, police service or the probation service and other related career pathways.

The skills you’ll learn could also take you to a career in social support services, youth work, community support and development, refugee and victim support, community development and consultancy work. We’ll also prepare you to work in voluntary and third sector organisations such as drug and alcohol services as well as intelligence and crime analysis, youth offending and the legal profession. Whatever your career goal, we’ll help you to achieve it.

Society is a complicated machine with lots of independent cogs that all affect each other. It’s a fascinating and wide-reaching subject to study.

Health and social science focuses on the changing world and the social and cultural influences on health, wellbeing and society. You’ll learn how to deconstruct issues and challenges in society related to diversity, health and gender. It also examines the ways in which globalisation is affecting the community and understandings of health, wellbeing and ageing.

There is a strong focus on employability throughout this programme and you will have the opportunity to volunteer for an organisation relevant to this degree, which will help enhance your CV for future graduate level employment.

This subject is perfect if you want to pursue a career in the public sector, either working in policy or politics. This degree will also help you to attain key transferable academic skills which are needed to pursue a career in the wellbeing, health, social and voluntary sectors.

PSYCHOLOGY

Our hands-on approach will give you a sense of what it’s really like to work in the world of psychology, in whatever career you choose. Our current students use our stateof-the-art observation laboratory to engage in the measurement of psycho-physiological responses using Biopac©. They measure the activity of the cardiovascular system, brain, autonomic nervous system and more. We also have Tobii eye tracking equipment and HTC Vive, a virtual reality software, meaning you can push the boundaries and get creative with your research ideas. We’ll also help you master SPSS, the statistics software that social scientists use to analyse and present data.

Many courses are accredited by The British Psychological Society (BPS), which is a recognised qualification by employers throughout the country. Upon graduation, if you achieve a 2:2 or higher, you’ll be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) and from there you can take steps towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist. We’ll also prepare you to work in a wide range of organisations, such as the prison service, the courts, probation service, local government, and more.
